In October, The Vail Valley Foundation and The Youth Foundation agreed to merge our educational programming. Retaining the name of The Youth Foundation, we will operate as the educational arm of The Vail Valley Foundation.

Under Susie Davis’ leadership, we will combine both organizations’ staff and existing programs. This will allow us to speak to donors and supporters with one voice. And we will now, together, plan and execute a comprehensive set of programs to positively affect every child in the Valley, providing each one with educational and enrichment opportunities that will let them excel at school, and in life. The programs we’ve offered are described in the following pages - they impact over 2,000 children per year. The programs we will offer in the future will touch every child in the Valley.

The school system today is under tremendous budgetary pressure, and unable to meet all of the needs of each child. Our public-private partnership is important to address the needs of the whole child, needs the school system cannot fully address alone: comprehensive early childhood development, after school academic and enrichment programs, summer academic and recreational programs, teenage mentorship and leadership development, and college and vocational scholarship opportunities. Our vision is a continuum of programs to help children and families in the Valley, from birth through college or vocational preparation. There are little “arcs” of services that make up this continuum, and our new, combined organization can build and operate these in a coordinated fashion.

On behalf of the Education Committee of The Youth Foundation, we want to thank our new, combined staff who plan and operate our programs; and we want to thank our hundreds of donors and supporters for the financial assistance and time spent as volunteers. Without all of you, this would not be possible. Together, We Change Lives.

By 2015, The Youth Foundation is nationally recognized for implementing best practice programs and for nurturing children throughout Eagle County from birth to successful adulthood. The Youth Foundation serves as an example of how the public can effectively partner with the school system to support the development and future of children in other communities throughout the United States. Our success drives change by sending a bold message about the value of investing in our greatest resource: our children.

We perform with deep respect for the individual, honoring the diversity that surrounds us with a dedication to quality and reliable programming. We share a commitment to community responsibility, and a view that The Youth Foundation exists to contribute to the advancement and welfare of every child with whom we come in contact. By recognizing individual strengths, we strive to have everyone involved with us be known, needed, and cared for.

The Youth Foundation prepares children in

need for success in life through education

and recreational opportunities.

Our education efforts are focused on one

goal— to give every child in Eagle County

access to education-based programs that

ignite passions and expand horizons. In order

to achieve this goal, we identify educational

gaps and then develop, evaluate, and

fund programs that provide youth with the

skills, confidence, and support to become

outstanding leaders and stewards in our

community and the world.

The Youth Foundation, the educational arm of the Vail Valley Foundation, is dedicated to the education and enrichment of youth in Eagle County, particularly those that need our help most.

We provide early childhood education, after school, summer, and scholarship programs for students ranging from pre-school through college.

Our programs address the whole child through academic support, fitness and nutrition, character development, and cultural enrichment. As a result, students improve their academic performance, develop healthy habits, learn core values, and broaden their understanding of the world and the opportunities available to them. The Youth Foundation helps children imagine and achieve their dreams.

Our unique and cohesive partnership with Eagle County Schools is central to our success. We hire local teachers to work with students during extended learning hours. Our partnership ensures the effectiveness of our academic support and helps to retain quality teachers by paying a livable wage.

We provide extended learning opportunities that help struggling students reach grade level in reading and math. We use regular benchmarking to assess and best facilitate students’ academic progress.

We focus on the whole child, one child at a time. The Youth Foundation addresses the social, emotional, and academic needs of every child through a coordinated approach with the family, school, and other community resources.

More than 2,000 participants each spend a minimum of 200 hours a year in our programs, focusing on academics, fitness and nutrition, cultural enrichment, and character development. We have an average attendance rate of 92%, indicating that participants are enthusiastic, engaged, and achieving success.

Program results consistently show improvement in students’ grades, test scores, school attendance, physical fitness, self-esteem, and overall perception of self and community.unique Partnerships

Dear Friends,

Susie Davis

The Youth Foundation is dedicated to improving lives of the children and families throughout our community, particularly those who need our help the most. While we run a variety of enrichment and recreational programs, we are also focused on improving the academic performance of children, knowing that this is the best way to open up opportunities for them later in life. Expanding the learning day is gaining national momentum as an important school improvement and whole-child development strategy. In partnership with Eagle County Schools, we are committed to promoting a unified expanded learning vision: children that are not at grade-level performance receive extra days and hours of concentrated tutoring and schooling by teachers and qualified Youth Foundation volunteers. The results are impressive: at one school, Avon Elementary, 197 students participated in The Youth Foundation’s PwrHrs program and received tutoring after school in a 6:1 student-teacher ratio. The results? Proficiency in reading, as measured by the Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP), moved up to 68% in 2011, from 51% and 52% the prior two years! Proficiency in math moved to 69% of all students, up from 56% and 58% the two years prior to the “extended learning” effort. In the words of Melisa Rewold-Thuon, Avon Elementary principal, “The Youth Foundation’s PwrHrs program is amazing for our students! In the past three years, the school has moved from 'turnaround' status to 'performing' status in the eyes of the state school system – hugely due to the growth our students have made in The Youth Foundation program. Our students love participating in the program! Because they love it, they do their best to improve academically during the small group, targeted instruction time.”

All of our programs are meant to be fun for kids, knowing that this best engages a child in their learning. We ran a pilot program this past summer at Berry Creek Middle School for 120 students. Blending academics with enrichment and recreation, and including a healthy lunch, students made important academic progress (as reported by the school, which conducted before-and-after testing) and started the school year ahead of where they would have been otherwise. Teachers noted positive changes in social skills, classroom behavior, and social interactions of the summer participants as well, suggesting that these positive behaviors continued as the school year began.

Together with the Vail Valley Foundation, we are committed to improving the opportunities for Eagle County School children, boosting school achievement, improving schools readiness and providing support to students who need it most. Please read through this document, learn more about what we do and, if you think we’re on the right track, please consider making a donation – 100% of every dollar you give goes directly to our programming.

Did You Know?

A year and a half ago, an apprehensive little girl climbed on the Magic Bus for the first time. As her mom introduced her to the other children, Luz Elena averted her eyes and hid timidly behind her mother.

By the fall, her demeanor had completely changed. Luz Elena was an outgoing little girl, holding her head high, smiling widely, and making eye contact with her kindergarten teacher. She was eager and ready to learn.

What facilitated the changes in Luz Elena over those 18 months? Maria, a Magic Bus teacher, identified Luz Elena’s challenges and made a concerted effort to consistently introduce social skills, listen when she spoke, and encourage her interest in learning.

Social skills were encouraged initially through puppets and role-playing. As Luz Elena became more comfortable, she transitioned from playing beside her

peers on the Magic Bus to playing, interacting, taking turns, and giggling with her new friends.

Maria continued to introduce Luz Elena and her mom to new learning opportunities as she watched the little girl’s self-confidence blossom. Luz Elena’s mom followed Maria’s guidance in reinforcing the lessons, taking home books from the Magic Bus, and making regular visits to the library.

By the time Luz Elena graduated from the Magic Bus, she could write her name, identify all the letters and sounds in both English and Spanish, and follow along as her mom read books to her, pointing out letters found in her own name. Both Luz Elena and her mom grew from the caring and stimulating environment found on the Magic Bus and were excited to transition into kindergarten with a strong start and solid foundation.

The years before a child reaches kindergarten are among the most critical in influencing his or her learning. A child's earliest experiences and relationships play a significant role in brain development. The Youth Foundation is proud to convene partnerships with key early childhood experts to provide high quality early care learning throughout Eagle County, making sure every child from birth through age five has the tools needed to be prepared for school and success later in life. Beginning with Raising a Reader all the way through Kindergarten Scholarships, The Youth Foundation is developing the best chance for success in school by advocating for, supplementing, and providing the highest quality preschool education and parenting support for families who cannot afford private preschool education. Our programs are dynamic and evidence-based.

Introduced by Vail Valley Foundation in May of 2011 and run in conjunction with the Eagle County Schools, Great Start Pre-Kindergarten Readiness Program is a 7-week summer semester that is built upon the idea that a child’s first step to their educational future actually comes from being socially prepared to enter kindergarten. All parents of Great Start students are also required to participate in weekly Parents and Children Together sessions.

Just seven years ago, only 21% of Eagle County kindergarten-aged children attended a full-day kindergarten program. Studies have shown that enrollment in a full-day program can decrease learning and social challenges in later grades and is essential to closing the achievement gap among minority and lower income students. While the State of Colorado does not provide for full-day kindergarten, a partnership between the Vail Valley Foundation and Eagle County Schools provides every child with funds to participate in a quality program. Thanks to this partnership, teachers report dramatic improvement in at-risk students.

Raising a Reader is an evidence-based early literacy and parent engagement program that has been proven to improve the reading readiness skills of children ages 0-3. The curriculum helps children and families develop, practice, and maintain a love for reading.

Each week, two buses function as mobile classrooms and provide unique and exciting pre-school experiences for children between the ages 3 and 5, who are not enrolled in a traditional preschool program. The students and parents on the Magic Bus experience the importance of play and discovery, while preparing for kindergarten. The Magic Bus program provides an opportunity to help close the achievement gap before it even begins during the early stages of a child’s learning and education.

Jose is fourteen years old and, like many teenagers, he has struggled to find his place in the world. This tumultuous time is further complicated by his parents’ contentious divorce. Jose has had difficulty paying attention in class, keeping his grades up, and understanding the value of staying in school. As early as sixth grade, Jose began skipping classes and participating in other risky behaviors.

Jose is charismatic, funny, and smart, but two years ago, he did not recognize his strengths. Rather, he was often in detention or the principal’s office for disrupting class or acting out. Prior to beginning his eighth grade year, Jose was severely depressed and attempted suicide. He was referred to The Youth Foundation to receive support outside of what counseling and his family could offer.

Jose began working with a Community Coach Mentor who assisted with homework, helped him get organized,

and provided a listening ear when Jose needed to talk about problems at home and at school. He also became involved in martial arts and other PwrHrs enrichment opportunities that helped him to build confidence, character, and skills to better communicate his feelings. In a note to Jose’s mom, caseworker, and The Youth Foundation, one teacher noted, “We are so proud of Jose and his commitment to academics and solid behavior. Thank you to ALL of you who have worked so hard to help Jose be successful. He is a renewed young man!”

Stories like Jose's support extensive research that peer mentoring programs can - and do - make a difference in a number of important areas. These areas include connectedness to school and family, improvements in social skills, self-esteem, and academic achievement. Both mentors and mentees experience tremendous benefits from participation in programs like Community Coach Mentors.

PwrHrs is the Youth Foundations's largest program, serving over 1200 children throughout the school year during after school hours, with the goal of closing the achievement gap and helping children to be successful in school and in life. The program takes a comprehensive four-prong approach, providing academic support, fitness and nutrition activities, cultural enrichment experiences, and character development opportunities. PwrHrs provides more than 200 contact hours per child on an annual basis. In that time, students improve their academic performance, develop healthy habits, learn core values, and broaden their understanding of the world and the opportunities available to them.

The Youth Foundation plays an essential role in helping students reach grade-level proficiency in reading by offering extended learning opportunities dedicated to closing the achievement gap. PwrHrs provides students with 2-3 additional hours each week of small group (1-6) guided reading time. The guided reading program is structured based on the literacy curriculum used by Eagle County Schools. The program focuses on all aspects of literacy—phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, critical thinking, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies. The approach for guided reading is targeted to the developmental level and specific needs of each child. Our staff regularly assesses students’ progress and growth in order to monitor their placement in the appropriate reading groups. PwrHrs enables teachers to spend concentrated time with small groups of struggling students with the focused intention of bringing them up to grade level in reading. Students, in turn, gain the additional learning time necessary to reach their academic benchmarks. Working hand-in-hand with Eagle County Schools to help achieve mutual goals for student achievement is yielding impressive results.

Academic support is central to the PwrHrs program. At the middle school level, students receive homework help and one-on-one or small group tutoring. The support of teachers, volunteers, and Youth Foundation staff is critical during the difficult middle school years, when students are undergoing dramatic physical, social, emotional, and academic changes. Middle school students are faced with increasing academic demands that often challenge their motivation as well as their organizational and study skills. PwrHrs aims to prevent kids from falling through the cracks and instead, supports them in facing new challenges with confidence, enthusiasm, and determination.

“The Youth Foundation’s PwrHrs Program at Avon

Elementary is an amazing program for our students!

In the past 3 years, the school has moved from

'turnaround' status with the state to 'performing' status;

hugely due to the growth our students made in The

Youth Foundation programs. I truly believe that the

small groups and individualized instruction are the

keys to the growth our students are making in reading.

that The Youth Foundation is 'preparing children

need to excel in school and life!”

Students receive an average of 70 minutes of physical activity per week in school. As a result

of The Youth Foundation’s KidSTRONG program,

participants have increased their physical activity by 240% during after school programming.

Did You Know?

The reason I love biking is because it makes me feel good. Biking allows me to get away from school, home, and family stress. Lately, there has been a lot of stress at home due to my parent’s recent divorce and the challenges that come from having to split my time between both parents. It is very stressful when my parents each expect something totally different from me and can barely stand to even talk to one another.

Mountain biking on The Youth Foundation’s Ells Angels team has been an awesome experience for me because it is something I would have never imagined myself doing. Before I started biking, I was nervous and excited, but I was also scared of falling and lacked the confidence to be successful. I knew how to ride a bike, but what really scared me was not being able to unclip and ending up with the bike on top of me.

Fortunately, all of that has changed. With a lot of practice and having to overcome my fears, I’m excited now to get on my bike and ride. Even though going uphill is not my favorite part, I know that I can make it, especially with the support of the rest of my team at the top cheering me on.

Life has not gotten any easier at home, but I know that I have an outlet and I am eager to work twice as hard to keep my grades up and to stay fit so that I can continue excelling as an Ells Angel. Thanks to our coaches and supporters, Brett, Tam, Anne-Marie, Amanda, and the rest of the Youth Foundation staff; I now have something else on my mind other than just the problems that surround me – I can think about the feeling of flying down the mountain on my bike after climbing a huge hill!

Kids Stronger Through Recreational Opportunities & Nutritional Guidance increases students’ physical activity through recreational opportunities and engaging activities related to health and nutrition. Students participating in KidSTRONG develop self-confidence, experience teamwork, and learn The Youth Foundation’s nine core values of honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy, and good judgment.

KidSTRONG has achieved remarkable results among the PwrHrs participants by increasing students’ time spent engaged in physical activity by 240% and educating children and families on developing life-long healthy habits and lifestyles. Promoting healthier eating and encouraging physical activity among disadvantaged youth directly correlates to improved grades, self-esteem, school attendance, and nutritional intake. Increasing these healthy behaviors is also associated with decreases in unhealthy weight control practices as well as decreases in risks of substance abuse, sexual behaviors, and suicide.

Copa Soccer is an 8-week summer soccer tournament for nearly 600 youth ages 3 through 18. The program brings families and neighbors together through the game of soccer, with the intention of increasing physical activity during the summer months and building community by developing a healthy lifestyle. This celebration of soccer, teamwork, and family operates under USSF rules and places an emphasis is on experiential learning, rather than winning or losing. Copa occurs every Sunday from June through August. In addition to providing opportunities for outdoor fun and physical activity, the tournaments bring families together and foster positive relationships between parents and their children.

Girl PowHER is a girls-only program that includes three hours of tutoring or literacy-based activities and at least three hours per week of physical fitness activities, including yoga, strength training, cross training, mountain biking (Ells Angels), and nutritional guidance. Through a wide variety of physical activity, nutrition and guidance, Girl PowHER unleashes potential and provides infinite possibilities for each girl, and as a result, creates a new culture of fit, confident, self-reliant, smart young women! In partnership with the Westin Riverfront Club, Donelson Coaching, Amanda Precourt, the Women’s Foundation of Colorado, and Ellsworth Bikes, The Youth Foundation has created an outstanding opportunity for middle school girls to build self-esteem, improve their academic performance, explore their strengths, and enhance their personal health and fitness.

Girl PowHER participants are provided with new experiences and challenges that they embrace and overcome together. As a result, the girls develop confidence, positive attitudes, discover their unique gifts, and build supportive relationships with friends and mentors.

The Little Chefs Program educates children about whole foods and empowers them with the tools to make healthy choices by providing interactive cooking classes. Children learn that by taking simple, clean ingredients they can create delicious and nutritious snacks and meals to share with their whole family. As a result, families are experimenting with new recipes and making healthy cooking a higher priority at home.

Shawn Sanders, chef and founder of Little Chefs of Vail, shares her excitement and kid-friendly recipes, inspiring enthusiasm among all participants. Shawn exposes her students to new cuisines and requires that they taste everything at least once. Many kids enter the program with an aversion to certain foods and quickly find that healthy recipes can be delicious and fun to prepare. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of The Sebastian Hotel, Timber Resorts, Shawn Sanders, and The Youth Foundation, Little Chefs is equipping children and their families with the skills, excitement, and information necessary to take responsibility for their own health in the kitchen.

Planting a garden connects children to the environment, fosters understanding of the origin of food, and teaches responsibility through stimulating hands-on activities. The newest of the Vail Valley Foundation educational initiatives, Sowing Seeds works with public schools to integrate gardening into the curriculum, resulting in teachers having the ability to use this resource-rich school garden as a catalyst to discuss the food cycle, the natural environment, and making smart food choices. The program also allows students to incorporate their gardening produce into the school cafeteria program and learn food economics by selling plants and vegetables at local Farmer’s Markets.

The Sowing Seeds project is a partnership with local restaurateur Kelly Liken, who teaches after-school “Cook with a Chef” classes and attends select Farmer’s Markets with students preparing fresh food on-site.

Jeremiah started taking group violin lessons with The Youth Foundation's violin program when he was in first grade. His group lesson was once a week and violin didn’t come easily to him. He was small even for a first grader and played a tiny 1/8 size violin. His fine motor skills still had some developing to do compared to some of the more developmentally ready first grade girls. Jeremiah continued violin through his fifth grade year. While playing, he learned a great deal about discipline, perseverance, and hard work. He practiced regularly, in between lessons, and grew as a musician and a person. His confidence began to soar and blossom and he became eager for opportunities to perform.

Jeremiah was self-motivated to learn music outside of what he learned in his group lessons. He played his violin in church, at a family members' wedding, and at Youth Foundation special events. During the summer, Jeremiah participated in the Young Composers program with members of the visiting New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He came to class eager to share the piece he had composed. Although a violin program is not yet offered in Jeremiah’s middle school, he had developed the confidence to take on a new band instrument and a life long love of music. Jeremiah has grown into a very good student, a competent musician, and a driven and disciplined young man.

Performing arts are central to the enrichment component of the PwrHrs After School and Summer programs. In partnership with the Vail Performing Arts Academy, Bravo!, Cindy Allard, and other local professionals; The Youth Foundation offers theater, music, and dance lessons as well as performance opportunities to elementary and middle school students.

Music offerings consist of violin and keyboard lessons taught by Bravo!, teacher, Cindy Allard, and the First Notes Program at Avon Elementary School. Dance includes cotillion, ballroom, ballet, and hip-hop dance classes led by the Vail Performing Arts Academy and Celebrate the Beat program. Lastly, the theater component is comprised of acting and improvisation exercises as well as opportunities to write, direct, and perform short plays.

The Youth Foundation’s performing arts opportunities complement and enhance students’ academic endeavors. The arts allow students to engage their creativity and develop skills not taught in a traditional classroom, while they simultaneously improve their academic aptitude. More specifically, artistic exercises have been shown to increase students’ spatial development and enhance their math and reading skills. Performing arts also improve students’ social skills and sense of self-esteem by encouraging self-expression and mutual respect.

The Youth Foundation’s visual arts programming enables students to expand and explore their creativity, means of expression, and artistic talent. Naturally artistic participants love developing their skills and engaging their passion. Other participants who struggle personally or academically benefit from the opportunity to communicate and express their emotions in a constructive manner. Many students’ personal and academic challenges even improve as a result.

The Youth Foundation partners with Alpine Arts Center and local artists to give participants the opportunity to explore various artistic mediums, including photography, writing, painting, and pottery. They learn about different artistic styles and great historical artists. Students have painted their own Monets, created art from recycled items, written their own Dr. Seuss stories, and created their own asteroid belts after a night of stargazing. Through each project, students are encouraged to dream big and maximize their creative potential.

First Notes is a music-based program that introduces elementary school students to the world of instrumental music. As students learn to play their instruments, they are also exposed to the importance of achieving success through hard work, dedication, determination and passion. Utilizing the El Sistema model, the Vail Valley Foundation launched “First Notes” program in the fall of 2009 at Avon Elementary School, introducing music to second graders by putting instruments in their hands. A year later a “Half Notes” choir was introduced to current second graders while the orchestra continued on with third graders. Now serving 100 students, the goal is to reach all first through fifth grade students over the next 3 years.

Through dance, children not only learn the benefits of exercising, but they also learn coordination, stamina, memory and discipline. Celebrate the Beat, a project of the Vail Valley Foundation, gives 1,000 elementary school students in Eagle County the chance to dance. This program motivates children to believe in themselves, value artistic expression, develop creativity and teamwork and instills a personal standard of excellence.

Did You Know?

There are a multitude of examples of how the Community Coach Mentor program has impacted the mentors and mentees, but none that illustrates the impact of the program as significantly as the leadership growth and success of Hugo Castillo. Hugo has been involved in Youth Foundation programs since he was in fourth grade. As a young student, Hugo struggled academically with learning challenges. With the support of The Youth Foundation PwrHrs After School programs and through his own perseverance and dedication, Hugo has not only met his learning challenges head on, he has become a leader and mentor to many other students.

“As a Community Coach, I help kids develop character skills such as sportsmanship, honesty, and confidence. Helping coach middle school students, I have the opportunity to help kids build their soccer skills, stay up to speed in their academics, and be good leaders. The Youth Foundation is important to me because it helps me interact with kids and share the skills that The Youth Foundation provided me when I was in elementary and middle school.”

Last year, Hugo was working in one of our programs with a new group of Community Coach Mentors and was concerned about how to hold high standards with the new group without being too authoritative or "bossy." His solution? He did what he always does – he modeled what he expected of the other mentors and engaged them with his sense of humor. He made the expectations clear, consistently reminding his fellow mentors that the kids are looking to them as role models.

Hugo does not see obstacles, but rather opportunities for success. He leads by example and is an inspiration to everyone at The Youth Foundation. Hugo graduated from Battle Mountain High School with honors, received scholarships to continue his education, and was selected by the Battle Mountain faculty and administration as the 2011 recipient of the Best Service to Community Award for the hundreds of hours he has spent mentoring and coaching younger students as a Youth Foundation Community Coach Mentor. Hugo is enrolled as a full-time college student at Colorado Mountain College.

Character development is the fourth cornerstone of The Youth Foundation and includes the Community Coach Mentors program, service-learning opportunities, and an emphasis on The Youth Foundation’s nine core values. The Youth Foundation’s Community Coach program and service-learning opportunities aim to engage children at-risk in service to others. Such opportunities allow students to experience personal enrichment and connect with their value and ability to be a positive influence in others’ lives.

In addition, The Youth Foundation teaches nine core values through each of our academic, fitness, and enrichment programs. The core values include confidence, courtesy, honesty, integrity, judgment, perseverance, respect, responsibility, and sportsmanship. We emphasize these values because, while academic achievement, health, and cultural enrichment are essential, we believe that it is ultimately a student’s character that will drive his or her success in living a meaningful and productive life.

The Community Coach Mentors program focuses on the character development of high school students who have already progressed through The Youth Foundation’s elementary and middle school programs and have returned seeking new opportunities to be engaged in meaningful service to others. The Community Coach program trains students to be effective role models.

The responsibilities of Community Coaches Mentors range from tutoring struggling students to helping Youth Foundation staff coach sports teams or lead team-building exercises, emphasizing core values through their work with younger program participants. Their consistent emphasis on core values inspires students to persevere through challenges, conduct themselves with integrity, and work respectfully with others.

Community Coach mentorship provides an opportunity to develop leadership skills, experience personal enrichment, and be a positive influence in others’ lives. Mentors and mentees both report increased self-esteem, better conflict resolution skills, enhanced organizational skills, and improved relationships with their parents. Last school year, the Community Coach Mentors dedicated an average of 160 hours each serving younger children.

"I am in my fourth year of teaching at Battle Mountain High School and know the student body well. Over the years I have come to know about The Youth Foundation (TYF) through my students. Last year especially, I could see the effects of TYF in my classroom. Students affiliated with TYF were more focused on school than their peers. I also saw how TYF held their kids to high standards and provided them with opportunities that they might miss out on because of their socio-economic status. TYF helps level the playing field for students who might get caught in the 'achievement gap.' Last year, one of my students asked me to help her proofread a letter. As I was helping her she told me how she was involved in this Mountain Biking Team that was 'so cool,' but wasn’t focused and was going to get kicked off the team. I was so impressed that TYF not only mimicked how to act in real life situations, but also held her accountable and gave her a chance to make a positive change. I really enjoy working with TYF and am eager to continue helping TYF to achieve the mission of preparing students for success."

Krista has always been a good student, eager to please others, and eager to learn. Her childhood did not follow the familiar path that many take for granted. She never knew her father and due to severe illness, her mother was unable to care for Krista and her sister.

Krista’s insecure childhood taught her to stay focused on immediate needs. Krista did not allow herself to dream about her future; she concentrated on survival. Of course she had dreams, but they stayed beneath the surface, waiting for the day that she would realize that she deserved good things to come her way. And they did come her way. The Guardian Scholars program changed Krista’s life and in turn she plans to help others change their lives.

The other Guardian Scholars at Colorado Mesa University think of Krista as the "Big Sis". She provides guidance, an ear and often a shoulder, making sure that her Guardian Scholar family members know that they can count on one another and always ‘have each other’s back.’

Krista will graduate with a degree in Forensic Science and spent this past summer interning with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Upon graduation, Krista will attend the Police Academy. –soon to be one of “Colorado’s Finest.” We are proud to have Krista as a great example of the success of the Guardian Scholar family.

In 2001, several Eagle Valley scholarship sponsors came together to advocate for broader access to higher education for Eagle County students. In order to make sure that all students have equal access, a single scholarship application was developed. The collective group believes that while higher education is a big challenge, every student who has the desire to work toward a college degree should have that opportunity. The Eagle River Valley Scholarship Collaboration is working to make the dream of higher education a reality for as many students as possible.

While there are scholarships for 4-year university programs, the scholarship collaboration realizes that that is not in the plans for many students. The scholarship committee takes this into account and has awarded scholarships to students with less traditional career goals as well, including community college and vocational programs. Each scholarship donor develops their own criteria, and individual considerations and requests are respected. The collaborative scholarship application is accessible for every high school graduate in our community.

Guardian Scholars is a full-ride scholarship program for Eagle County students that come from the foster care system or other significant displacement obstacles. The comprehensive model maximizes state and federal financial aid, foundation financial support, and donor support in order to provide full scholarships to all college-ready students fitting the specific criteria of the program. In addition, The Youth Foundation and on-campus advisors provide students with the emotional support and guidance they need to be successful.

The Guardian Scholars model, initially founded by Ron and Lucy Davis in Orange County, California, has received national recognition for its financial leverage and graduation success rate among disadvantaged youth. The program targets students who have already overcome significant hardships and supports them in reaching their highest potential. Guardian Scholars graduate with an immense sense of accomplishment, dedication to the community, and drive to achieve their dreams.

The Youth Foundation continues to stay in close contact with each scholar, offering the emotional support, guidance, and encouragement they need to successfully enter the workforce and adjust to adult life on their own. We are more than a scholarships, we are a family. Making dreams come true.

An advanced degree is more important than ever, but college tuition can be out of reach for many. Established by the Vail Valley Foundation in 1992, the scholarship program has grown to the largest collegiate scholarship effort in the Vail Valley, with a total of $1.4 million raised. The Vail Valley Foundation awards a variety of scholarships, including the Vail Valley Foundation four-year scholarship, the Les Streeter-Walter Kirch Memorial Scholarship, the Helmut Fricker Scholarship Fund, the June S. Kang Love of the Arts Scholarship, along with up to 10 Karri Casner scholarships annually for students attending Colorado Mountain College.

DREAM First serves students between 7th and 12th grade who are among the first generation of their family likely to go to college. The program consists of year-round workshops, field trips, and guest speakers that help participants to envision and believe in a successful future. DREAM First initially supports students’ transition from middle school to high school and then from high school to college and beyond. Participants learn about and plan for success in high school, college, and eventually, the workforce. They learn about financial literacy, saving for college, career exploration, resume writing, interview skills, and workplace manners and expectations. As a result, students are prepared and excited to pursue higher education and a productive career.

We believe that there is no better gift than the gift of education. Education breaks down barriers, opens doors that would otherwise be closed, and enables all children to reach their highest potential. Still, higher education is not an option for everyone. Many children in Eagle County lack the resources or support systems necessary to pursue the level of education they desire. The Youth Foundation bridges these gaps of resources and support through a combination of pre-collegiate programming, scholarship collaboration, and the Guardian Scholars program. Our pre-collegiate and scholarship programs help students to envision their dreams and seize the vast opportunities before them.

Take the next step towards being a voice for children and helping to provide opportunities for them to become successful. The Youth Foundation has a number of opportunities for you to get more involved and ensure that every child can discover their dreams.

There are several ways for you or your business to make a difference to Eagle County’s students. We have found that increased community involvement through volunteer participation and mentorship has a direct, positive impact on both the children and volunteers who participate. Volunteers make our community a better place to live. The Youth Foundation volunteer opportunities connect individuals and organizations with people and programs that will utilize their specific talents and benefit others.

Join our core of volunteers who enhance all of our programs, whether it’s helping an elementary student with their reading, teaching colors and shapes on the Magic Bus, providing health and nutrition information to middle schoolers, or mentoring first-time college students… all of which teaches kids how to dream, set and achieve goals, be productive members of our society and give back to our communities. If you have one day, one hour, or can meet weekly, we would love to use your skills in our programs.

4039

With your help, learning doesn’t have to stop when students leave the classroom. We offer students valuable opportunities to set and achieve personal goals, participate in recreational and content rich cultural exploration, and boost engagement and achievement in school. Our programs are a crucial support system for children, providing constructive activities, supervision, and safety during out-of-school time. Your investment means that Eagle County students will continue to have a safe, enriching, place to go during after school hours and will develop the skill and confidence to become outstanding leaders and stewards in our community. We are filled with appreciation for all that you give.

We believe that there is no better gift than the gift of education. There are many children right here in our community who lack the tools and the support system necessary for the pursuit of a good education: The Youth Foundation provides these gifts.
