Attn: Local Church TreasurersThe Conference Board of Pensions is pleased to announce a reduced healthcare billing rate to the local churches for 2019. The 2019 blended rate of $1536.00 a month for full time appointed clergy which was communicated earlier in the fall has been reduced to $1385.00 a month. This is a savings of $151.00 a month to the local church.

The CBOP is continuously evaluating what steps and measures we can take to reduce healthcare costs to the local church. It has been determined the CBOP is in a position at this time to absorb the cost of administrative expenses and healthcare premiums for our special participants; surviving spouses, CPP disability, student pastors and retirees with 40 years service.

The CBOP recognizes the financial challenges facing many of our local churches and remains committed to identifying ways to offer affordable, quality healthcare to our clergy and their families.

UNITED METHODIST HUMAN SERVICES5 X 1000 – A small way to make a big difference!

United Methodist Human Services serves all of Cambria County and adjoining parts of Somerset, Bedford, and Clearfield Counties. Through faith in Christ and community partnerships, they develop relationships that empower and transform individual lives, families, and future generations.

You can spend your hard-earned money a lot of different ways. We all want to do good with our money, but sometimes there isn’t much left at the end of the month.

What if you could make a difference without breaking the bank?

$5 doesn’t seem like much, right? But just imagine if you could multiply it by 1000. The impact would be undeniable! We’re looking for 1000 people to commit to changing lives.

Your $5 monthly gift will help put shoes on children’s feet and food on the tables of families and senior citizens. You’ll help provide hats, gloves, diapers, hygiene kits, and necessary care items to those who need them. You’ll help empower people struggling in economic instability to build brighter, more secure futures for themselves and their families. This just might be the best $5 you spend each month! Visit umhumanservices.org/5x1000 to start changing lives today!

Churches, Let Camp Allegheny Help You Connect with Local FamiliesCamp Allegheny's Camp On-the-Go program had an excellent first summer this past year. We had six different churches, primarily in the Johnstown area, partner with Camp Allegheny to reach the young families in their community.

Camp On-the-Go is our traveling Day Camp program and we are looking for

partner churches for Summer 2019. Camp Allegheny provides resources for every step of the process, from registration forms to parent letter templates, while allowing communication to primarily go through the church. That means that, from the start, local churches are building a relationship that can last beyond the summer.

Camp Allegheny staff will run the program during your church's week of Day Camp while your volunteers spend time getting to know the kids better and becoming an important part of their lives! Activities are Camp Allegheny specialties, from camp crafts, Bible studies, and games, to a real Pony ride, hamster ball, knocker balls, and more!

John Zimmerman is a Conference Evangelist and Church Outreach Consultant with the United Methodist Conference of Western PA. He was consulting with one of our sites while we were there this past summer and this is what he had to say about the program: "I had the wonderful privilege of helping with Camp On-the-Go at Johnstown. [The staff] were amazing...as well as the whole program. We are very excited for what this concept can accomplish as it goes into the future."

John produced a video for us as well, and you can see that video here: https://vimeo.com/282594378

If you want to connect with young families in your area, now is the time to start planning for Summer 2019. We are looking for churches of any denomination within an hour's drive of our camp who want to partner with us in taking the Gospel to their community through quality programming and relationship building!

Email [email protected] and let him know you want to learn more!

CLEANING BUCKETS NEEDED!Cleaning buckets drop off location in Johnstown is Elton: Zion UMC. Please contact the church to make sure someone will be there to accept the buckets before dropping off. Church office phone number is (814) 266-1512.

Because of the widespread flooding that we are receiving throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania, specifically around Pittsburgh suburbs, we have exhausted our cleaning buckets at the Eastbrook mission barn.

On behalf of the disaster response ministries and the Eastbrook Mission Barn, I am issuing an urgent request for cleaning buckets and hygiene kits; with priority being placed on cleaning buckets.

If each district would be able to collect 100 cleaning buckets this would alleviate concerns about having enough supplies in this initial response.

Funds for cleaning buckets could also be forwarded to the Eastbrook Mission Barn. Funds for general disaster response should be forwarded to the conference treasure. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call 814-442-5899.

Thank you for everything you are doing and for all of your support, we continue to seek God’s will as we help those who have been affected by natural disaster.Peace and blessings, Calvin CookWPA Disaster Response Ministries

District Library

As your District Librarian, my vision for the District Library is to assist all the Johnstown District UM churches to share their church library materials with each other. This will allow us to witness and nurture our own communities, both within the church and our surrounding communities, by sharing our library and curriculum materials through the use of an automated system -- just like your local library. I invite all of you to contact me, Sarah Harris, as your District Librarian, and tell me what your vision is for the District Library. What would you like the focus of the District Library be to help with your church's needs and wants? Please contact me at [email protected] or 814-288-5204.

How to Turn Outward Influence Pyramid The Outward Mindset Pattern

Quotes from Letter of Invitation to Conference Staff, BOM Executive Team, Connectional Leadership Table Executive Team, Delegation to Special Session of General Conference

From Pat, Renee and Brad in body of invitation:

“Based on more than 45 years of research in the psychology of human behavior and motivation, and more 35 years of experience working with organizations worldwide, including The United Methodist Church, it is our belief DOMS will prove invaluable to us individually as Christ-followers, our relationships with others, and the Church, including the local church.”

From Bishop Cynthia in body of invitation:

“I am always excited about the opportunity to support pastors and laity who yearn to learn more about how to be in authentic, meaningful relationships with one another and their communities in the midst of our diversity.”

Quotes from Participants attending January 4-5, 2019 training (Participants included members of Conference Staff, BOM Executive Team, Connectional Leadership Table Executive Team, Delegation to Special Session of General Conference)

“The training was particularly insightful and helped me realize a few important (and sometimes difficult) facts about myself. I hope to use these tools to change some circumstances in my life I didn’t realize I had the power to change.”“I went home and focused on my inward vs. outward mindset – made some usually rocky paths smoother.”

“Some of the tools are good reminders of known-principles, if not revolutionary.”

“I think my biggest take-away will be trying to be intentional about thinking about and seeing others first.”

“Being able to see real-world, practical applications of the concepts is invaluable.”

“Good opportunity for personal reflection and fine tuning of relationship skills.”

“I appreciated the practical application of the material. The tools, conversation, and break-out sessions could all be applied to my ministry setting and personal life. Thank you for creating a non-threatening setting and atmosphere in which to learn and grow.”

“I would like to bring it for our entire church staff.”

“The workshop put me face-to-face with myself. I see the areas where I need to work, the people I’m neglecting by not living up to my potential, not focusing on them (outwardly) but putting myself first (inwardly) and limiting both myself and others.”

“This was an incredible way to get to know other leaders and grow together.”

“This workshop provided inspiration to bring more intentionality and consciousness to thinking beyond myself.”

Quotes from Participants attending September 7-8 training (Participants included Bishop Cynthia, District Superintendents, District Lay Leaders)

“This program helps me treat those with whom I am in relationship with respect and kindness.

“It opened my eyes to my own thinking and how some of my ways were inward thinking. It will help me to think more outward that I have in the past.”

“It would be great to see this training expand.”

“An outward mindset is critical for today’s church.”

“As far as recommending this study, I would say it is most beneficial and recommend to others to take it. Learn about getting out of your box!”

PEACEBUILDINGFaith & Facts: Preach with Justice

What do the facts say?- Conflict theorists often use three terms: Peacekeeping, Peacemaking, and Peacebuilding- PEACEKEEPING means keeping people from attacking each other by placing neutral soldiers

– peacekeepers – from the UN or a group of neutral nations. The soldiers do nothing to settle the conflict.

- PEACEMAKING is the process of forging a settlement between the disputing parties.- PEACHBUILDING is a process that facilitates the establishment of durable peace to prevent

the recurrence of violence by addressing root causes and effects of conflict reconciliation, institution building, and political as well as economic transformation.

What do you say?Take Action for justice…Support and promote Peace with Justice Sunday, one of the six special Sundays that provides funding for peace with justice programs in your Annual Conference and the Church and Society Peace with Justice Program.

Drew & Lindsey Myers.  These are wilderness trips with primitive camping and are physically challenging.  But the reward is to enjoy beautiful scenery, wildlife, and the chance to grow as disciples in God's creation.  Cost is $475 for adults and $445 for teenagers.  This includes transportation, meals, and equipment.  Participants 19 or older must have a passport.  For questions, contact Scott Hamley at 724.859.6745 or [email protected].  Registration is through the Conference website:  https://www.wpaumc.org/camping."

JUMONVILLE NAMES NEW PRESIDENTFriends of Jumonville,

This past summer, Larry Beatty informed the Jumonville Board that, after 37 years of ministry on the mountaintop, it was time for Jumonville to find its next President.  In response, the Board entered into a nationwide search for Larry’s successor.  The process has been bathed in prayer and has spanned months of outreach, communication, review of applicants, and intensive interviews.  The President Search Committee and the Board & Staff Development Committee, collectively have invested hundreds of hours in seeking God’s chosen candidate to assume this essential leadership role heading into this next season of ministry for Jumonville.

I am pleased to announce that, in a wonderful spirit of unity, the Jumonville Board has approved the appointment of Heather Withrow as the new President of Jumonville.  Heather comes to us most recently from Glacier Camp in Lakeside, Montana.  Originally hailing from Elkins, West Virginia, Heather answered God’s call to camping ministry upon her graduation from West Virginia University, having earned her degree in Recreation and Parks Management with an emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation.  Now with more than twenty years in the camping and retreat ministry, Heather brings with her a wealth of knowledge, experience, and wisdom.  Heather is active in the American Camp Association and the National Conference Committee of the United Methodist Camp and Retreat Ministry.  She will also participate in Jumonville’s membership with both the Christian Camp and Conference Association as well as the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability.

Upon her appointment as President, Heather commented, "I am honored to be joining the Jumonville team. I am eager to continue the rich history of ministry on the mountain; and to explore all the ways in which we can use our resources to point people to Christ throughout western Pennsylvania and beyond.”

Heather and her husband, Shawn, who is a graphic designer, will be moving to Jumonville in the next couple of weeks to begin their Jumonville ministry.  This will not be their first experience with Jumonville, though, as Heather has brought retreat groups to Jumonville, and has for years considered Jumonville to be a wonderful ministry.  They are anxious to begin building relationships with the Jumonville and beyond.  Your prayers during this exciting time would be greatly appreciated.

Larry Beatty noted, “I am thrilled with the choice of Heather to be Jumonville’s next President and I heartily endorse her. I will do all that I can to support her in this time of transition.”

Please mark Sunday, May 5, 2019 on your calendars.  Our annual Spring Dinner will be held in Jumonville’s Asbury Dining Hall that evening at 5:30. That day you will have the opportunity for a meet-and-greet with Heather and Shawn.  We also will be celebrating the more than 37 years of dedicated ministry and service of Larry and Jaye Beatty.  Please watch for ways that you can be involved.  It will be a wonderful day that you do not want to miss!
