description
Two landmark exhibitions of private collections of Japanese art-the Powers Collection, shown at Harvard's Fogg Art Museum in I970, and the Burke Collection, exhibited at theMetropolitan Museum in I975 - provided early inspiration and much needed scholarship. These exhibitions both presented encyclopedic collections of Japanese art. But Messrs. Barnetand Burto found that their own interest centered on a uniquely Japanese aesthetic, oftensummed up in a single word: Zen. "Zen Painting and Calligraphy:' an exhibition organized inI970 by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and featuring major loans from Japan, played akey role in broadening their taste.
