Leading patient care

The justification for the existence of the entire medical industry is, of course, better healthcare for all patients. But the realities of clinical routine often make this simple-to-understand goal quite difficult to realize: stay within budgets, reduce hospital stays, speed up time to diagnosis, and deal with personnel issues, while maintaining high clinical standards and volume/throughput. At the same time, patients demand better and faster results.

Adapts to Any Patient

Every patient is different. So is every clinical question. Our goal was to create a new kind of CT that could actually adapt to your patients and recognize the unique needs of physicians.

We modified every component of our MSCT to provide the industry’s best parameters for image quality and patient access. As a result, SOMATOM Definition AS is the only CT to adapt to any patient and any clinical need. Pediatric. Obese. Cardiac. Trauma. Transforming into what you want at your command, enabling you to become an expert in any field.

11

Adapts to Any Patient

SOMATOM Definition AS, with its high true temporal resolution of 150 ms in combination with the industry’s highest spatial resolution and advanced scanning techniques, such as Adaptive Cardio Sequence, performs reliable, visually outstanding cardiac imaging at the lowest dose possible.

Supported by the High Definition (HD) Volume Projector, even the smallest coronary vessels appear sharper, while common steps in cardiac imaging are entirely eliminated. Giving you the

confidence to perform accurate stenosis measurements or stent planning with outstanding precision.

When imaging obese patients the challenge is two-fold: patient accommodation and power reserves. Not anymore. There are no patient exclusions with its large 78 cm gantry opening and a patient weight capacity of up to 300 kg (660 lbs), everyone can be comfortably scanned. And with a powerful 100 kW generator and highly efficient UFC™ detector material, your power reserves are virtually unlimited.

It enables you to visualize patients in trauma situations – including poly-traumatic cases – in one stop. Supported by a 2 m scan range, the fast volume coverage of our 128-slice detector means that you can perform an entire body scan of 2 m, from head to toe, in just 10 s. The advantages are significant. Uncooperative or unconscious patients with short breath-holds can be quickly scanned. Fractures, bleeding, and other polytraumatic injuries can be revealed and immediately shared with your trauma or vascular surgeons via syngo® WebSpace and the Acute Care Engine.

Neuro patients benefit from great gray-white matter differentiation due to new detector configuration. With a simple mouse click your SOMATOM Definition AS can virtually change its detector design. The result? The smallest structures and their pathologies – like the inner ear – can now be easily visualized with unmatched 0.24 mm spatial isotropic resolution. All this makes the SOMATOM Definition AS an expert in virtually any clinical field. Adapting to any patient, exam, and level of complexity. Every day.

Challenging CT examinations, such ashead and neck examinations, long-rangevascular studies, or polytrauma patients, require high-volume coverage for quickexamination. While conventionaltechnology is limited to a reduced pitchin order to increase the spatial resolution,SOMATOM Definition AS can scan pitch-independently and therefore reach amuch higher sub-mm volume coverage.

The combination of SOMATOM Definition’s fast gantry rotation speed, z-Sharp Technology and the 128-slice configuration generates the industry’s fastest sub-mm volume acquisition speed of 192 mm per second.

20 Adapts for Complete Dose Protection

Adapts for Complete Dose Protection

Using the lowest possible radiation dose is important to both you and your patients. SOMATOM Definition AS provides an exceptional solution by adapting for complete dose protection. It actively manages dose in 100 % of all examinations, removing clinically irrelevant dose for every patient.

21

Adapts for Complete Dose Protection

Introduction

Our answer: Siemens unique Adaptive Dose Shield. It addresses this important safety issue by dynamically blocking clinically irrelevant over-radiation pre- and post-spiral. This simply was not possible before. Now, we ensure that the only dose applied to the patient is dose that is clinically relevant with no compromise in image quality.

Additionally, the increasing demand, especially in cardiac imaging, is to reliablydeliver superior image quality, even during unstable conditions, while maintaining lowest possible dose. To offer full flexibility, we developed dose savingtechniques for both spiral and sequentialexaminations.

Most of today’s clinical examinationsbenefit from spiral acquisition techniques. That’s where the heart of our doseprotection technologies lies. CARE Dose4D™, our real-time dose modulation, guarantees an unparalleled combinationof maximum image quality at minimumdose for every patient in every spiral scan.

However, the continuous demand for more coverage and the corresponding increase of detector size has unveiled a new challenge for CT manufacturers – over-radiation, both pre- and post-spiral scan, has significantly grown.

With Adaptive ECG-Pulsing™, our innovative heartbeat-controlled dose modulation, we have designed a unique solution that reduces dose of up to 50 %* in spiral cardiac imaging. At the same time, its real-time monitoring of the ECG automatically and instantly reacts to changes and abnormalities of the heartbeat.

In addition, SOMATOM Definition AS offers an alternative acquisition technique called Adaptive Cardio Sequence. Based on an intelligently triggered step-and-shoot exam, this approach for low heart rates

makes an even lower radiation exposure possible, while compensating for potential patient arrhythmia.

SOMATOM Definition AS gives you the ability to control dose and adapt it precisely to your clinical need. It’s something all patients will appreciate.

SOMATOM Definition AS eliminates over-radiation pre- and post-spiral to the patient (marked in red). The AdaptiveDose Shield, which is unique to the CT industry, is part of the innovative new STRATON X-ray tube design. It dynamically moves shields into place on the X-ray tube to block unnecessary dose. The Adaptive Dose Shield dynamically opens at the beginning of a spiral range and then dynamically closes at the end.

Now all clinically irrelevant dose is eliminated. Not only for dedicatedapplications, but for every single spiral acquisition. Giving you the ability to save an additional 25 %* of dose in routineexams like abdominal CT.

24 Adapts for Complete Dose Protection

Adaptive ECG-Pulsing, our innovativeheartbeat-controlled dose modulation, applies the exact dose necessary to collectdata projections of 180 degrees during thediastolic phase. Its real-time monitoring of the ECG enables a fully automated doseadjustment, instantly reacting to changesand abnormalities of the heartbeat. Now that the temporal resolution is only 150 ms, the time of high exposure duringeach heartbeat can be cut down evenfurther, as compared to traditional singlesource CT scanners. Instead of usingmultisegment reconstruction at higherheart rates, the SOMATOM Definition AS,with its high temporal resolution, allows you to acquire cardiac images from a single heartbeat. The MinDose

Reliable low dose spiral heart scans

Low dose scans of 1–3 mSv in clinical routine

feature reduces the pulsing window to a minimum of 4 %, giving you additional dose savings.

In addition to the Adaptive ECG-Pulsing,the SOMATOM Definition AS offerssequential cardiac acquisition mode. We call it Adaptive Cardio Sequence. It’s an intelligently triggered sequence that shuts off radiation in the systolic phase and dynamically reacts to irregularities during the ECG trace. The real-time ECG monitoring reacts instantly to irregularities and stops the scan until the heart rate becomes stable again. This arrhythmia compensation method allows for high dose savings and an increased robustness of scan. Adaptive Cardio Sequence in

28 Adapts for New Dimensions

Adapts for New Dimensions

SOMATOM Definition AS overcomes today’s challenge of limited detector coverage. It opens up new dimensions by going beyond morphology to functional 4D information. From stroke and tumor perfusion of the entire organ to dynamic CTA studies. In addition, for the first time ever, 3D information for CT guided interventions is now routinely available.

29

With its unique Adaptive 4D Spiral,SOMATOM Definition AS moves beyondfixed detector limitations to provide full coverage of any organ in 4D. Adding a complete new dimension in CT imaging for tumor, stroke, and dynamic CTA evaluation.

In stroke assessment, it provides you the information you need not just for a limited section of the disease, but for the whole brain. So you are assured of a reliable assessment of the type and extent of cerebral perfusion disturbances. Adaptive 4D Spiral scanning provides quantitative perfusion information and delivers vascular information within the same scan.

In addition, it allows you to performperfusion studies over the entire organ in both head and body using syngo Volume Perfusion CT Neuro or Body. Enabling you to assess the entire extent of the disease and visualize the function of potential metastases.

Finally, SOMATOM Definition AS’s Adaptive 4D Spiral enables the visualization and evaluation of complex intracranial vascular structures in separate phases. Arterial and venous phase are captured in a dynamic scan of up to 27 cm, but can then also be evaluated with syngo InSpace 4D AVA separately. So you’re able to not only delineate aneurysms and other vascular diseases, but also to exclude occlusions of the aortic vessels and assess venous thrombosis.

Adaptive 4D SpiralHow it works

Conventional Perfusion

syngo Volume Perfusion CT NeuroOvercome the coverage limitation

With today’s conventional CT and itsrestricted coverage, whole organ perfusion studies or long-range phase-resolved CTA studies, are just not possible. The industry’s initial attempts to overcome these limitations focused on extending the coverage, but were limited to twice the detector size. The result was an inability to cover the entire organ.

Through our innovative Adaptive 4D Spiral, we apply a continuously repeated bi-directional table movement, moving

Adaptive 4D Spiral Perfusionthe patient smoothly in and out of the gantry over the desired scan range. It’s how we’re able to overcome the coverage limitation of a static detector design. The Adaptive 4D Spiral enables you to adapt the coverage to exactly the range you need. For example, you can perform a phase-resolved CTA study over a length of 27 cm, providing a clear separation of arterial and venous phases.

Now for the first time in perfusion studies, you can cover virtually any organ in 4D, such as performing a complete stroke assessment of the entire brain with syngo Volume Perfusion CT Neuro.

Repeated bi-directional table movement for smooth spiral shuttle scan

detector design traditionally allows. Furthermore, the SOMATOM Definition AS eliminates artifacts caused by the needle material. Depending on the size of the needle, the scan will be done in a certain angulation of the gantry. Images will be reconstructed as non-tilted axial slices, giving you the same information but without artifacts. Additional workflow enhancements, such as auto needle tracking, will speed up your workflow by guaranteeing that you always have the right view of your needle.

For both sequential and spiral acquisitions SOMATOM Definition AS provides visualization of 3D images nearly instantaneously. Giving you not only axial images, but oblique images, too.

SOMATOM Definition AS gives you the opportunity to easily switch between fluoroscopic, sequential, or spiral scanning, with a click of a button right at the scanner. By switching to a short spiral scan, you can extend the coverage to visualize an area larger than a static
