By constantly adjusting to changing light conditions, Serengeti® photochromic lenses do the work for you, providing your eyes with the optimal amount of light at all times. Darkening in bright sunlight and lightening in overcast conditions, the lenses allow you to experience enhanced contrast and discern shapes and colors more quickly, eliminating both eyestrain and the loss of detail.

In bright conditions, when UV radiation is more intense, the polarity of the lens molecules expands in size, darkening the lenses and allowing them to absorb more light. In darker conditions, when UV radiation is less intense, the molecules shrink and separate, letting additional light pass through.

And because photochromic technology is engineered into the lens at the molecular level, it never wears off or wears out, giving you the clearest, most high-definition view of everything around you.

Specifically designed to interact with the full spectrum of light, Serengeti’s® Spectral Control® filters fine-tune your vision by selectively managing light wavelengths. Haze and glare are dramatically diminished, contrast is enhanced, and eye fatigue is reduced. As a result, objects appear sharper and more clearly defined — regardless of the weather conditions.

“Blue Blur” occurs when blue light, the shortest and harshest of light wavelengths, focuses in the front of the eye’s retina instead of behind it, where other light waves tend to focus. This can cause eyestrain and fatigue, resulting in reduced sharpness.

Serengeti® photochromic lenses block this distracting blue light, letting just enough through to prevent color alteration. This allows for a richer and more balanced view that helps relax the eyes.

Serengeti® photochromic lenses also pass the Traffic Signal Recognition Test, which gauges the amount of red light a lens actually blocks. If a red traffic light appears red through the lens, the sunglasses pass. If the red light appears blackish, as it does when viewed through most blue-blocking sunglasses, they fail.

The process begins with borosilicate optical glass from Corning,® which can withstand extreme temperature changes. The lenses are chemically tempered to ensure scratch and impact resistance, then ground to perfection.

The lenses then undergo Serengeti’s® patented Hydrogen Firing Process. Hydrogen-fueled Lehr furnaces activate each lens with our photochromic and Spectral Control® technologies with varying high temperatures determining their proprietary lens color. After the lenses cool, they are treated with a unique coating that protects their edges, all while being closely monitored by a technician.
