WHAT IS A EPD

n An Environmental Product Declaration, EPD®, is a verified document that reports environmental data of products based on life cycle assessment (LCA) and other relevant information and in accordance with the international standard ISO 14025 (Type III Environmental Declarations).

n An environmental declaration, is defined, in ISO 14025, as quantified environmental data for a product with pre-set categories of parameters based on the ISO 14040 series of standards, but not excluding additional environmental information.

n An environmental declaration is created and registered in the framework of a type III environmental declarations program such as the International EPD® System.

6

ENVIRONMENTAL LABELING TYPES

n Type I: ISO 14024 environmental labeling, national schemes

n Type II: ISO 14021 environmental labeling, self-declared

n Type III: ISO 14025 Environmental product declaration (EPD)

EPD - MARKET DRIVERS AND POLICY

n Regulations§ Sector specific regulations, e.g. construction product regulation§ National regulations, e.g. in France

n EU Commission: support for sustainable consumptionn Green building initiatives

§ Mandatory for German Green building certification.§ USGBC Ver 4 has mandatory requirement.§ Other country GBC are working on several program and will sooner

or later make the EPD mandatory.§ In India IGBC is working on Green Product Rating Program.

8

WHY EPD FOR BUILDING PRODUCTS

n The energy consumption of houses and buildings taking into account the whole life cycle is responsible for 40% of total EU energy consumption and is the main contributor to GHG emissions (about 36% of the EU’s total CO2 emissions).

(source European Commission)

n In the US, buildings account for:§ 36% of total energy use § 65% of electricity consumption§ 30% of GHG emissions§ 30% of raw materials use§ 30% of waste output (136 million tons / a)§ 12% of potable water consumption(source EPA / USGBC)

9

CLASSIFICATION OF EPD SCHEMES

n Regional EPD schemes§ “European EPD scheme” => EU PEF and OEF§ National EPD schemes

n Sector-specific EPD schemes§ Building and construction:

• National EPD schemes- IGBC in India• ECO Platform

§ E+E : French P.E.P. Ecopassport

10

REFERENCE GUIDELINES

n ISO 14040:2006 - Environmental management -- Life cycle assessment -- Principles and framework

n ISO 14044:2006 - Environmental management -- Life cycle assessment -- Requirements and guidelines

n ISO 14025 (Type III label) : is based on ISO 14040/44 and introduces two concepts: Product Category Rules (PCRs) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).

n ISO 15084 : The standard provides the means for developing a Type III environmental declaration of construction products and is part of a suite of standards that are intended to assess the sustainability of construction works.

11

CONTENT OF AN EPD

n Product description and technical datan Additional information, e.g. information on fire performance,

disposal channels, etc.n Description of product‘s life cycle

§ Production processes and raw materials§ Installation of product§ Use phase§ End of life: recycling possibilities and disposal

n Life cycle assessment§ Chosen settings (system boundaries, goal and scope, cut-off criteria,

allocation, crediting, …)§ Result tables§ Interpretation

13

EPD PROCESS

n Creating an Environmental Product Declaration in the International EPD® System includes the following steps:

§ Find or create relevant PCR document for the product category

§ Perform LCA study based on PCR

§ Compiling environmental information into the EPD reporting format

§ Verification

§ Registration and publication

EU PEF AND OEF

n EU Commission has developed two EPD methods for analysingenvironmental issues of products (Product Environmental Footprint (PEF)) and organisations (Organisation Environmental Footprint (OEF))

n EU aims to harmonize measuring and communicating environmental impacts: “single market for green products”

n EU PEF and OEF 3 year pilot phase started in November 2013 to test the methods and develop product group specific category rules (PEFCRs and OEFCRs)§ 1st wave of pilots (Non-Food): 15 projects were selected§ 2nd wave of pilots (Food, Feed and Drink): 10 projects are expected

16

WHY PEF AND OEF?

n More than 400 environmental labels worldwiden around 80 reporting methods and initiatives only for GHGs⇒ Diversity of labels, methods and initiatives creates confusion and mistrust ⇒ How is it possible to prove that a product or company is green?
