As we all enjoy a bit more reflective time these

summer months, perhaps it would be fitting to

reflect on what our church means to us.

Last Sunday, I had a nice surprise. Collier Lilly (age

11) left this beautiful poem he wrote about

our church. I share it with you to inspire your own

grateful reflection.

Warmly, Mark

My Church

By Collier Lilly

On 204 6th Avenue West

Is a Methodist church, I call the best.

There is a big bell that help you find the way,

Where people worship and pray on Sunday.

Our pastor’s name is Reverend Mark Ralls,

And our choir echoes throughout the halls.

The organist plays hymns that sound so fair,

And beautiful music fills the air.

The congregation makes beautiful, loud sounds,

And the sounds echo all across the church grounds.

The youth group teaches us about God’s love,

Which makes us thankful for blessings from above.

The Holy Ghost will help you throughout life,

But only if you believe in Jesus Christ.

Worship Enhancement FAQs Over the last few months, the

Worship Enhancement team has received

many great questions. Below are a few of

those questions with our reply:

1. Twelve years ago, the church looked

at making

Sanctuary improvements, but after re-

view by several church groups, the project never moved

forward. Why?

In 2010, a feasibility study was done to convert the

main sanctuary to serve for multi-use (all services).

The cost then was $1,141,500 and did not include any

A/V/L enhancements. The cost was deemed to be too

expensive to consider. Since then, the Church Leader-

ship (Kairos and its predecessor) have consistently

supported that decision.

2. The Worship Enhancement Team appears to be most-

ly Ignite attendees. Why isn’t there representation from

the Traditional Services? Can we have a team to look at

further upgrades beyond the audio and video upgrades

that are part of the Worship Enhancement Plan?

There are 15 individuals on the team and at least five

regularly attend the Traditional Services, so the compo-

sition is about 66% Ignite and 34% Traditional. This

composition was due to the original purpose of the

group which was to deal with the updates needed in the

Barber Christian Life Center. The Trustees have recent-

ly formed another team to consider additional enhance-

ments in the Sanctuary. We are seeking representa-

tives from the Traditional Services. If you would like to

Spring Festivities On Tuesday, May 22nd, recipients of the Homebound Ministry,

volunteers, guests, and staff were invited to a Spring Party in the

Barber Christian Life Center. Attendees enjoyed a delicious luncheon, while

being entertained by John Mulaney on the piano, Steve Johnson on the

banjo and solos by Kelli and Mary Grace Mullinix. One of the most

pleasurable parts of the afternoon was seeing old friends and

connecting with new. Ann Reiff wrote, “ Seeing friends we know was

wonderful. One of the nicest things was being able to walk into the

church - it’s been about a year”. A fun afternoon was enjoyed by all as

evidenced by the beautiful smiles and happy faces of our Homebound

folks.

FUMC Homebound Ministry needs you to let us know if we’re missing

anyone! Our presence with folks is an expression of God’s presence and loving care. If you know of a church member who is

no longer able to attend Sunday services or church activities on a regular basis, due to age or physical challenges, and would

benefit from regular visitations, let us know. Contact Marilyn Anderson: FUMC Homebound Coordinator

Worship Enhancement FAQs (continued from cover page) 3. What is the seating capacity of the Barber Christian Life Center?

The Hendersonville Fire Marshal reviewed the room and determined a maximum

seating capacity of 514.

4. If our congregation continues to grow, where will we park?

Parking is not as convenient as everyone would like and we do not have space to

add more parking near our main entrance. However, ample parking remains

available across Church Street in the 2-level bank parking lot and is

accessible for all services.

5. Why are we replacing the floor in the Barber Christian Life Center?

The existing floor is now about 18 years old and the new floor is specifically

designed as a sports floor and will provide improved multi use functionality. Ad-

ditionally, the color and design

will be more be more complementary to the rest of the space.

6. What happens if we do not get the full $250,000 needed to complete the full project?

In the event there is a shortfall, the Trustees would be forced to delay/remove some of the enhancements.

7. What happens with the money if we receive more than the needed $250,000?

Any additional funds received will be deposited in either the Worship Enhancement Fund for future worship

enhancements or in the Capital Reserve Fund for future building maintenance depending on Kairos decision.

Cub Scout Pack 603 and Boy Scout Troop 603 We are proud to be a part of the Cub Scout Pack 603 and Boy Scout Troop 603. As sole sponsor we provide a meeting space,

leadership support and guidance in line with our Christian values and mission of our church. We seek to offer opportunities

through scholarships to help families who could not otherwise afford to be a part of Scouting. By 2019, we will have four Eagle

Scouts enrolled in our Troop 603. The scouts wish to express their gratitude to our church for sponsoring them over past years

supporting their fundraisers, use of our building, the recent Meals4Missions Grant, volunteer support provided for maintenance

on the Scout hut, and funding by the prior United Methodist Men which supports a uniform lending and scholarship

program for many scouts in need. Troop 603 will be giving back to their church family in appreciation of our partnership by

helping with the community garden and have actively assisted in the Scout hut maintenance project, and did a thorough

cleaning of the Roy Johnson Room.

Thank you to the leaders, past and present, of our BSA Programs: Pack 603, ALL parent leaders and committee members for

603. If you or your child (5K-HS) wish to become involved in our scouting family as a member or adult mentor, please contact

Anna Hicks, Organizational Representative from HVL FUMC at [email protected]. We are currently looking for adults who

can serve as Merit Badge Counsellors for our Boy Scouts in a variety of activities as well as prior scouts who can serve as

leaders.

FUMC Mission Connection: Interfaith Assistance Ministry What is IAM?

Interfaith Assistance Ministry (IAM) helps those in our community who have a financial crisis by providing nutritious food,

clothing and blankets, and money for electricity, water, fuel oil, propane gas, rent and prescriptions. IAM is Henderson

County’s largest provider of crisis services!

Last year, IAM provided more than $1.8 million in assistance to nearly 9,536 children and adults, including food for

132,240 meals, clothing for 3,901 individuals, heating and/or utility

assistance for 637 families and much more!

FUMC Connection

FUMC helped establish IAM 34 years ago with the donation for its first home

as well as financial support and a supply of willing volunteers.

My Sister’s Closet originated at FUMC and now operates as the Working

Women’s Clothing Closet within IAM’s facility.

27 of the more than 300 current IAM volunteers are FUMC members.

In 2017, IAM received $14,000 from our mission budget.

For complete details and many other interesting facts about how IAM assists

our community, and ways you can help IAM visit http://fumchvlnc.org/

ministries/missions or call Gary Lambert at 575-

“To everyone at IAM, Just wanted to write a note and tell everyone here today and

the whole IAM that you are wonderful, kind, caring, Christ filled people who this world needs more of! If it wasn’t for you, me,

my husband and my 7 year old son would be lost. You have helped us in our time of need. Thank you! Your help is such a

blessing!” From: THF

Leone Alexander, 19 year volunteer

“Seeing the obvious relief on the

faces of the men, women, and

children who had come for help,

then would leave with groceries,

clothing, and a plan to deal with

whatever had caused their immedi-

ate crisis is worth every minute of

the time I’ve spent volunteering at

IAM.”

Zeb Morgan, 8 year volunteer,

“It has proved to be a most rewarding

experience to be able to assist in the

providing of food to those in need. A

bonus, not anticipated by me, has

been the friendships formed with fel-

low volunteers and the staff members.

The biggest bonus however, is the look

on the faces of recipients, especially

the moms (relief) and the children

(wonder) as we load the food into their

cars.

Sowing Seeds Ministry is collecting new & used materials! Oh, the joy the singing, the dancing all because Love Packages was able to hear

the cry of the people of Zimbabwe. 36 Churches in Zimbabwe received Bibles.

Most of them have never ever held a Bible in their entire life, but they would still

go to church year after year without a Bible. One lady was on her knees for over

one hour just clasping her Bible. Literature was also taken to the rural clinics

schools and hospitals. There was so much joy when they received their boxes, it

was like Christmas over and over again. Your help is needed to continue filling the

prayers that go up all over the world for Christian literature and Bibles. Please

remember Sowing Seeds when you complete a Bible Study we are happy for your

used material. We need about 50 boxes to make a full truck. There is a box in the

gathering area where your books can be dropped off. For more information con-

tact Sally Jones at [email protected] or go to www.Lovepackages.org

The Mission Council has decided to suspend the annual FUMC garage sale

this year because of the renovations to the Barber Christian Life Center.

Meanwhile, please consider donating your items to the Etowah UMC

Annual Flea Market which will be held on Saturday, August 4. Visit

http://www.etowahumc.org/flea-market/ or contact Brian Lund, Flea

Market Coordinator, at 408-695-5518 or 828-513-1765. Donations will

be accepted on Friday June 15 and July 20.

You can arrange for pick-up assistance if needed.
