'Iranian fighters may fly over US forces'Thu, 29 Apr 2010 23:49:57 GMTFont size :The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraftcarrierA senior Iranian Air Force officer does not ruleout reports that an Iranian fighter jet mighthave flown over a US aircraft carrier last weekin the Arabian Sea.

The incident was first reported by CNN onTuesday. According to the report, a planebelonging to the Iranian Navy was flying as lowas 300 feet near the USS Eisenhower on April21.

The Eisenhower was in the northern ArabianSea when the Iranian maritime patrol aircraftflew within 1,000 yards of the vessel, US

    military officials claimed.

Mohammad Alavi, deputy commander of theIranian Air Force said that the fighter jet mayhave come close to the US aircraft carrierduring a routine patrol.

"Iran has scheduled flights in the air corridor inthe altitude of up to 20,000 feet, and its planemight have come close to the US aircraft carrierwhile flying in this corridor," Fars news agency

quoted Alavi as saying on Thursday.

He added, "Nobody can criticize such flightsbecause they are being conducted within theframework of international law. We conductroutine reconnaissance flights with differentaircrafts, including drones, and they may havecome across the US forces. PRESS TV

Toward the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries, the U.S. aircraft carrier remained the countrys forwardpresence. With three carriers always on a crui

se somewhere in the world, normally in the Mediterranean Sea, Pacific Ocean, andPersian Gulf, they can reach hot spots quickly. When Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in August 1990, the USS Eisenhower, cruising in the Mediterranean, was able to reach the Red Sea, within striking distance of Iraq, in two days. And because, byinternational law, aircraft carriers are sovereign U.S. territory when in international waters, they eliminate the need for theUnited States to gain permission from a host nation to position planes or troops on their territory.American bases in foreigncountries, increasingly unpopular and the focus of anger and resentment among native populations, do not need to be built ormaintained. Carriers are free to roam the seas, which make up 70 percent of the Earths surface. Their speed and flexibility allowthem to bring firepower and presence anywhere they are needed. In the words of President Clinton, and every president since

World War II, the most important question in times of tension is "where is the nearest carrier?" - http://www.century-of-flight.net/Aviation%20history/jet%20age/aircraft%20carrier.htm
