and nothing shall be im- possible unto you. And then one day, early on, a letter came. Just an encouraging note from my parent’s Sunday School class back in King, not much news, but it held $15, three $5 bills. They had taken up an impromptu offering and sent us an absolute fortune. Mom and Dad put it back for emergencies, and before long, we had one. My dad was in need of some shoes. He was preparing to preach at this tiny one-family church back up in the woods of eastern Kentucky and he didn’t own a single pair of decent dress shoes. Mom suggested he get the $5 bills and buy some $15 shoes. (yep there actually were such things in those days) He was on his way to do so when the then President of KCC, Lowell Lusby, saw him walking across campus and called out to him. Larry, I preached a one day Revival at a little church not too far from here this weekend and a lady in the church pushed this in my hand. She told me to give it to one of our ‘preacher boys’ and I thought of you.” He handed my Father exactly $15. Dad looked at the money, said thank you, and went home to tell Momma to hide the church money back in its place. Taking the other bills my Dad bought shoes and began his work of preaching the gospel. This happened time after time after time. Each occurrence brought a new level of trust in the goodness and power of God, and a reminder that faith could move mountains. It honestly became sort of funny after awhile. There was almost an expectation and an excitement wondering what The Woodlawn Witness Volume 20, Issue 9 Fellasophies God was going to do next. There was no doubt that we would spend the money if we ever had to, but there was little question that when he graduated, we would still have that offering from King. And we did. It was with us when we left Grayson to move to the church my Dad pastured in Staunton, VA, and every time life got tough, my parents would take out those bills and re- member the mustard seed, the mountains moving. Those mountains always appeared, but with prayer and faith, through the power of a mighty God, they always moved. At one point, they even gave the three bills to some friends of ours who were stepping out on faith to start a new ministry. That $15 stayed with them, bol- stering their faith until a year later when we lost my Dad in a tragic accident. Then they came home to hold my Mom and I to- gether through the difficult Continued on pg 2 If you’ve ever been in my of- fice, you may have noticed hang- ing on my wall a frame with $15 displayed along with a scripture from the Gospel of Matthew. Ac- tually it’s not so much $15 as it is three $5 bills. Maybe you’re wondering, “What’s the differ- ence? Three $5 bills comes to $15 doesn’t it?” The answer is…not really. I guess if the significance of those bills was in the mone- tary value they held, then yes, it would be the same. But those bills in that plaque on my office wall hold much more worth than the numbers on the corners. I’ve told the story behind them in the past, but it’s been quite a while, and I’ve noticed people have been asking questions about them more lately, so I thought I would just share the story with you again In the late 60’s my Father felt that God was calling him to become a minister. This was no small matter because it meant going off to Bible College at forty- three years of age with a wife and two kids to support. He men- tioned this to God on several occasions, but God would not be silenced, so halfway through the school year, in December of 1968, we moved to the campus of Kentucky Christian College with- out a dollar to our name, to live in a trailer he bought from his brother, without a job or a pros- pect, so that he could answer the call of God on his heart. Times were tough, but Dad would re- mind us of the verse that moved us to Kentucky. coming years. For a long time I never saw the money, and often wondered if it was possible that they had been spent during the lean years. I learned the truth sometime later. It was my twenty-fifth birthday, and Mom had driven down to Tennessee to see me. She was just passing through on the way to Oklahoma, but she wanted to give me my birthday present. I opened the box to see the neatly framed and matted bills. After all those years, there they were. And engraved on a plaque on the bottom were the words that had carried my family across state lines, through impossible situations, during times of trouble, over places where mountains had once stood.

Matthew 17:20 …for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of

mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place;

and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

In life there will always be moun-tains, mountains of doubt or painful memories, mountains of questions over whether God really counts you as one of His favorite people, mountains of health or financial or sin issues and every one of them seems bigger than you can cross. It’s true, they are. But they are not so big that they can’t be moved by those with faith in a Mighty God.
