Welcome

Presents

The Tabard TheaTre company

From Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Executive Artistic Director

A little back-story on how this play came to be part of my final season as artistic ldirector at Tabard: For decades, I’d often shared the phrase, “If you want to mmake God laugh, tell Him your plans.” Well, in 2012 while searching for

shows to do in the 2013 – 2014 season, I came across the comedy Making God Laugh by Sean Grennan, which we then produced in September/October 2013, directed by Doug Baird. Through that experience Sean and I developed a theatre friendship, so much so that in 2014 he sent me a copy of his new play The Tin Woman. Given all that was going on in my life at that time, I couldn’t get into it. I set it aside. A year ago Spring, as I was sorting through things in my office, I found the script and the lovely card from Sean that he’d enclosed with the script way back in 2014. I read the script — it was a page-turner. I found the dialogue beautifully written and the story poignantly told. Why was my reaction so different? The script was the same. As the Chinese saying goes, “When the student is ready, the teacher arrives.” I knew then that I wanted Sean’s play to be part of my last season at Tabard and emailed him my intent last summer when we were exploring shows for the 19th season. This play is special to me for many reasons. I’m especially grateful to Doug Baird for saying “Yes” to directing another of Sean’s plays for Tabard, and I’m grateful to Sean for his supportive encouragement and engagement over the years.

Speaking of Sean, I recently received an email from him in which he elaborated on Tin Woman’s lead character Joy’s journey of new beginnings:

I’m sure you’ve noticed that one of the things worth focusing on is that Joy is essentially a loner, a person without a tribe. The Borden family is a tribe that has lost a member. At the end, the thing that heals them collectively is that Joy fills the void for them and they fill the void for her. Joy, a person who doesn’t like to even be touched, allows them in and it changes everything for her.

I’m a firm believer that humans need humans to thrive. It’s one of the reasons that solitary confinement is torture. Disconnection, lack of intimacy is an epidemic these days, isn’t it? Facebook and others are making it worse by artificially filling in for real connection. I do go on, but that’s at the ‘heart’ of Joy’s issues for me.

Because this play is very much about rebuilding one’s life and finding home and connection, the designated non-profit for this production is Rebuilding Together SV, a local organization that helps people rebuild their lives by giving them opportunities to work with others to build homes.

I’m grateful you are here for this play that has a special place in my heart. Thank you for being here.

Doug Baird (Director) is a Tabard associate artistic director and previously directed Snapshots; Adrift in Macao; Mom’s Gift; Musical of Musicals (The Musical!); I Do! I Do!; Tuesdays With Morrie; Starting Here, Starting Now; Looking Over the President’s Shoulder; and Driving Miss Daisy. Other recent directing credits include Irene, Bells Are Ringing, Mame, and My Fair Lady at WVLO Musical Theatre. Doug is also an award-winning actor, having appeared in Hairspray; Cabaret; Hello, Dolly!; South Pacific; The Pajama Game; Pippin; and 42nd Street, to name a few. He returns this season to direct James Creer in Looking Over the President’s Shoulder.

Cathy Spielberger Cassetta (Producer) incorporated Tabard in January 2001, although she started working on creating the company in November 2000. To date, she has produced all of Tabard’s shows (more than 90!) and this total does not include the many productions Cathy was part of prior to Tabard! Later this season, she will direct Tabard’s holiday show, A Taffeta Christmas. As you may know, this season is Cathy’s last as artistic director. Not one to be idle, she has already begun writing the next chapter of her life. She is a registered yoga teacher, mat and aerial, with over 700 hours of training, including focusing on bone health and myofascial release. Truly, a new beginning. :)

Joe Cassetta (Technical Consultant) transitions this season from being Tabard’s Technical Director since 2001 to serving Tabard as Technical Consultant for most of the 2019 – 2020 shows. He does return as Technical Director later this season for A Taffeta Christmas and continues to serve on Tabard’s board. A retired engineering manager with an M.B.A., Joe enjoys working with his hands, creating and building various projects for home and theatre. Machines that he particularly enjoys are cars and clocks.

Carolyn Ford Compton (Alice) is honored to be performing again at Tabard. You may have seen her as a very naughty teacher in Evelyn in Purgatory. She has appeared in theatres on the Peninsula and in San Francisco; most recent roles include The Lion in Winter, The Crucible, and The Grapes of Wrath. Carolyn is a floral designer by day, addicted to the stage by night, and continues to hone her craft in classes at Beverly Hills Playhouse in SF. As always, sending appreciation and love to her Darlin’ Darryl, whose support is endless, and who graciously puts up with all this…

Andy Cooperfauss (Jack) joins The Tabard Theatre for the first time. Favorite credits include Stupid F***ing Bird with City Lights Theatre Company, The Full Monty with Hillbarn Theatre, Assassins with Los Altos Stage Company, 1776 with South Bay Musical Theatre, and Picasso at the Lapin Agile at Santa Clara Players. In real life, he works as Director of Marketing at gaming website and retailer ChannelFireball.com.

Jamie Gussman (Nurse/Darla) is thrilled to be making her Tabard debut with The Tin Woman! Some of her other credits include Ziegfeld Girl in The Will Rogers Follies (WVLO Musical Theatre), Martha in Heathers the Musical (Pacifica Spindrift Players), and Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray (Stage1/Ohlone College). Jamie is a junior at Santa Clara University studying theatre arts. She thanks her friends and family for their support, and hopes you enjoy the show!

Mandy Heiser (Sammy) is so excited to be making her Tabard debut under the brilliant direction of Doug Baird! Previous credits include Lady MacDuff/Angus/Murderer in Macbeth (Silicon Valley Shakespeare), Laertes in Hamlet (Adirondack Shakespeare Company), Oliver in As You Like It (The Cradle Theatre Company), and Tzeitel in Fiddler on the Roof (South Valley Civic Theatre). In loving memory of Noah.

Richard Holman (Hank) is happy to return to the Tabard stage after previous appearances as Coach in Evelyn in Purgatory and Sir Harry Percy in The Explorers Club. Other favorite roles include Larry in Inspecting Carol (Bus Barn Stage Co.), Ray in Lone Star (Los Altos Conservatory Theatre), a Bad Chemical in Breakfast of Champions and Algernon in The Importance of Being Ernest (Hillbarn Theatre), Lenny in Rumors (ArtRise Theatre), and Garret in Sojourn and Peter Stockman in An Enemy of the People (Pear Theatre). Rich dedicates this show to Diane, always.

Jessica Whittemore (Joy) is wholeheartedly happy to be back at Tabard, after singing about Stardust in Holiday at the Savoy and reveling in moonlight as Grazia in Death Takes a Holiday. Other favorite roles include Margaret in Silent Sky (City Lights), Amalia in She Loves Me (Foothill Music Theatre), Velma in Chicago and Ulla in The Producers (Cabrillo Stage), and Ilse in Spring Awakening (Sunnyvale Community Players). Offstage, Jessica is an Instructional Designer for the Stanford School of Medicine, and is an environmental science graduate of USC and the University of Michigan.

Gwyneth Price (Wigs Master) is a licensed cosmetologist and graduate of the prestigious Make-up Designory in Burbank, CA. For South Bay Musical Theatre she’s created hair and makeup looks for Gentlemen’s Guide, Mame, My Fair Lady, The Bridges of Madison County, and 1776, and she has worked with other local theaters including Palo Alto Players, Lyric Theater, and Sunnyvale Community Players. She’s also worked with celebrities like Sigourney Weaver, Carrie Fisher, and LeVar Burton. www.gwynethprice.com.

Joan Rubin (Stage Manager) has stage-managed a number of Tabard shows including Snapshots; Love Letters; Adrift in Macao; Mom’s Gift; Musical of Musicals (the Musical!); Edith Stein; I Do! I Do!; Tuesdays with Morrie; Starting Here, Starting Now; Making God Laugh; and Looking Over the President’s Shoulder. She has also stage-managed a dozen shows for Woodside Players and Woodside Community Theatre, as well as many for Saratoga Drama Group / South Bay Musical Theatre. She notes that it is a most pleasurable experience working with these actors and staff of Tabard.

Melissa Sanchez (Costume Designer) received her B.A. in technical theatre, with an emphasis on costume design, from San Francisco State University. A busy costumer, she has worked with many Bay Area companies including Palo Alto Players, Teatro Vision, City Lights Theater Company, and Silicon Valley Shakespeare. Her Tabard shows include Miracle on 34th Street, Swift Justice, I Do! I Do!, Crowns, Memphis, Musical of Musicals (the Musical), Peter and the Starcatcher, Adrift in Macao, The Explorers Club, Snapshots, and Beau Jest.

Sean Grennan (Playwright) is a New York playwright, lyricist, librettist, and actor originally from Chicago. His plays and musicals have had hundreds of productions around the world, including the U.S., Canada, Russia, Australia, China, the Middle East, England, Latvia, Italy, and Spain. Musicals include Phantom of the Country Palace, Married Alive!, A Dog’s Life, and Another Night Before Christmas. Plays include Beer for Breakfast, As Long As We Both Shall Live, Making God Laugh, Now and Then, and The Tin Woman. He is currently adapting The Tin Woman as a musical.

Jennifer Hart (Scenic Painter) is pleased to return to Tabard after working previously on Sherlock Holmes, Queen of the Mist, Beau Jest, Snapshots, and The Explorers Club. She has a B.F.A. from the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia and has been living and working in San Jose since 1996. Her previous theatre experience includes five seasons as the artist with Angels on Stage. When not painting sets, she works as an artist: painting, sculpting, illustrating, and generally being creative.

Carsten Koester (Lighting Designer) is excited to have joined Tabard last season, having recently relocated to the Bay Area from Brussels. Between 2004 and 2015, he worked on an average of five productions per year with various English-speaking theatre groups based in Brussels. For these companies he served as lighting designer or assistant, sound designer, often in combination with lighting, and/or creating video/projections as well as assisting with set construction.

Robert Lewis (Sound Designer, Assistant Stage Manager) designed the sound for Tabard’s Beau Jest and Evelyn in Purgatory, after stage-managing Death Takes A Holiday, Homeward Bound, and Holiday at the Savoy and working in technical roles for most of the shows in the last five seasons. A New Jersey native and electrical engineer by education, Robert is now nearing three decades as a resident of the Bay Area (with stops in Dallas, Boston, and Tokyo along the way) and software consultant.

Leslie Lloyd (Props Master) is a familiar face at Tabard; she directed The Miracle Worker, did props for Sherlock Holmes and Queen of the Mist and set decoration for The Explorer’s Club, and has appeared in numerous productions including Love Letters and the title role in Edith Stein. She is head of the Theatre Arts department and Teacher of the Year at Homestead High School; there she directs and produces three productions a year, as well as teaches courses on Shakespeare, theatre technology, and acting fundamentals. She is a seventh-generation Californian, and has a collection of over 100 nun dolls.

Charles McKeithan (Technical Director) most recently performed in and served as fight choreographer for Tabard’s production of Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of the Crown Jewel. Charles brings to his work as technical director for Tin Woman years of experience designing and building sets for many Bay Area theatre companies. He will bring those talents to Tabard’s stage for A New Brain, The 39 Steps, Looking over the President’s Shoulder, and The Secret Garden.

Experience infinite possibilities. Tabard.
