About UsTrading since 1921, Witham Oil and Paint Ltd is a privately owned business with its Head office and lubricant manufacturing based in Lincoln. The paint manufacturing factory is in Lowestoft and its trade centre and distribution depot based in Soham. The business is now collectively known as The Witham Group.

Over the past 90 plus years, our family run business has grown from humble beginnings originally making cycle oil and candle wax to become acclaimed manufacturers of a huge range of commercial lubricants and paints. We are immensely proud to have been granted the Royal Warrant to HM The Queen for the products and services we supply to the Royal Estate in Sandringham.

In recent years, the demand for a safer, cleaner environment has led to the development of modern biodegradable lubricants and greases that still give more than comparable performances to their mineral counterparts. Ideal for sensitive surroundings such as forests, reservoirs, parklands and waterways, our Enviroyl and BioLube ranges of biodegradable products are ideal. Due to careful design and formulation, they do not compromise on the full requirements of a quality lubricant and continue to meet the high demands of today’s modern machinery.

Engine Lubricants Our range of superior quality lubricants for diesel and petrol engines help lower emissions, reduce maintenance costs and improve fuel economy. Fully approved for use by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), our products are made and tested to an outstanding level of performance. For clarification of the technical terms used in the product descriptions below please refer to the Technical section of this brochure.



Heavy Duty Engine Oils

Supremol 10W40A Full Synthetic - Ultra High Performance Diesel Engine Oil - specifically designed to meet the stringent requirements of the latest generation Euro engines. Qualube Supremol has been developed with low sulphated ash, phosphorous and sulphur (low saps) designed to provide extended drain intervals, and minimises diesel particulate filter (DPF) plugging and protects catalytic treatment systems. Designed and approved to the latest MB228.51 and ACEA E6 specifications. SAE 10w/40 viscosity. ACEA E7, API CI-4, MB 228.3, Deutz DQC III-10.

Extendol FS 10W40This product meets the very latest increased horsepower, severe duty diesel engines and additional requirements imposed for pollution control and fuel economy, with the introduction of new engine designs. Qualube Extendol FS is formulated using modern additive technology, shear stable viscosity modifiers and fully Synthetic base stocks. Qualube Extendol FS has been designed to meet the demanding service requirements of the MB228.5 diesel engine specification and ACEA E4. SAE 5w/30 viscosity and 10w/40. ACEA E4, API CI-4, MB 228.5, Deutz DQC IV-10, Volvo VDS3.

Extendol FS 5W30 This is a fully synthetic heavy duty diesel engine oil formulated using the latest quality base oils and enhanced additive systems. Because of its lower viscosity it is recognised as a fuel efficient lubricant which also provides better

cold starting and less wear on engines, starter motors and batteries. It also offers excellent anti-wear and corrosion protection. This product meets and is approved by the following specifications: ACEA E4/E5/E7, APICH-4, DAF HP-1/HP-2,SCANIA LDF, VOLVO VDS-3 and RENAULT VI RXD.

Extremol 10w/40A fully synthetic mid SAPS heavy duty diesel engine oil for use in both Euro IV & Euro V engines. This product is backward compatible for use in many earlier engines as well as satisfying the requirements of many OEM’s. This product is formally approved to Volvo VDS4 and also meets API CJ-4, ACEA E9-08, Cat ECF-3 and Deutz DQC III-10-LA amongst many other credentials.

Endurasyn SSA severe-duty, Semi-Synthetic based lubricant which has been developed to meet the diverse and demanding service requirements of both diesel and petrol engines. Qualube Endurasyn provides Longer Oil Drain intervals, resulting in lower maintenance costs. Proven engine and piston cleanliness allowing for clean burning engines with improved fuel economy. Improved engine durability providing reduced repair costs and constant protection against corrosion and rusting of engine components. Qualube Endurasyn is approved to meet, amongst others, the latest Volvo VDS3 specification, ACEA A3/B3, B4/E7. Available in SAE 10w/30, SAE 10w/40 and SAE 15w/40 viscosities. ACEA E7, API CI-4, Volvo VDS3, Cat ECF-2, MB 228.3.

Endurol In addition to being a high quality lubricator, this oil keeps the engines clear of rust and prevents corrosion of bearings. It acts as a coolant and traps contaminants in a suspension until the oil is drained. Qualube Endurol is available in SAE 15W/40 and 20W/40 grades and is formulated using the strongest additive technology, the most shear stable viscosity modifiers and virgin base stocks.ACEA E7,API CI-4,Volvo VDS3, Renault RLD/RLD2, Cat ECF-2,MB228.3,Deutz DQC-III-10.

EurofleetDeveloped to meet the mixed fleet applications asking for a high quality crankcase lubricant. Qualube Eurofleet is suitable for use in high output, turbocharged and normally aspirated four stroke diesel and petrol engines. Manufactured using high viscosity paraffinic base oils, compounded with mixed fleet additives. Meets and approved to the latest API CH.4/SJ service classification, Volvo VDS2 and ACEA A2/B3/E2 specifications. Available in a full range of SAE viscosities.

MinsterA quality lubricant for older mixed fleet application. Meeting pre 1995 engine specification requirements in full. A budget lubricant for older fleet users. Available in multi-grade and mono-grade viscosities.

Series 1Suitable for many non-turbo diesel engine applications. Available in a range of SAE viscosities.

Passenger Car Motor Oils

Using the latest lubricant additive chemistry, this important range of new technology engine oils offers maximum performance and component protection for cars and vans at all levels of use.

Qualsyn PCMO FS 5W/30 & 5W/40A high quality fully synthetic lubricant designed to meet the requirements of a vast range of cars and vans. This product meets the latest ACEA A3/B4 and API SL/CF, in addition this product can also be used where many other OEM specifications are required.

Qualsyn PCMO FS 10W/40This product has been designed where a higher viscosity product is required but the advantages of a fully synthetic product are still desired. Satisfying the ACEA A3/B4 & API SL/CF as well as MB229.3 this lubricant can be used in many fleet applications.

Qualsyn MS FS 5W/30 ATDDesigned specifically to meet the Ford WSS 934B specification for those vehicles fitted with after treatment devices this fully synthetic product also covers the ACEA C1 & C2 requirements so can also be used in a wide range of applications.

Qualsyn MS FS 5W/30 C3This product is for use in vehicles that use after treatment devices and meets the ACEA C3 specification. In addition this fully synthetic product carries Dexos 2, BMW LL-04 & MB 229.51.

Qualsyn MS FS 5W/30 FSFA dedicated fully synthetic product designed to meet the Ford WSS M2C-913C specification. This product also carries ACEA A5/B5 and is backward compatible to the earlier Ford WSS M2C-913A & 913B.

Qualsyn MS FS 5W/30 VAGManufactured specifically to meet the Volkswagen VW504 & 507 specifications this product also meets the BMW LL-04, ACEA C3 & MB 229.51 allowing it to be used in a greater range of vehicles.

Qualsyn MS FS 5W/20 948BThis product is manufactured to meet the Ford WSS M2C-948B specification required by the latest generation ECO engines.

Qualsyn PCMO SS 10W/40This Semi-Synthetic product meeting API SL/CF is designed for use in older engines where after treatment devices are not fitted.

Qualsyn PCMO SS Special Racing Oil 10W/50A superior quality semi-synthetic oil, blended with the highest quality synthetic and mineral base stocks. This product is designed for competition engines under stress where performance is key.


Agricultural Universal Lubricants

Qualube All Farm 3 –Super Universaladd Formulated as a traditional “Super Universal” this product is designed for tractors that do not require separate transmission and engine oils.

Qualube Agri-Supreme SS 10W/40A part synthetic STOU (Super Tractor Oil Universal) developed approved to the MF 1145 specification. This viscosity grade is becoming the transmission fluid choice for many OEM’s including Massey Ferguson and Fendt.

Qualube Universal Oil 20w/30This product is specifically blended to meet the needs of vintage tractors that require a fluid that will protect the moving parts without the harsh detergents & dispersants found in their modern equivalents.

Agricultural Transmission Lubricants

Qualube Wet Brake Transmission Oil (WBTO) 10w/30This product is a dedicated UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil) developed to meet the needs of the majority of major tractor OEM’s. This product incorporates the John Deere JD J20C specification as well as Case New Holland CNH MAT 3525.

Qualube Agri-Supreme 10W/30An STOU (Super Tractor Oil Universal) developed to meet the MF 1145 specification. This product also incorporates many other OEM specifications including John Deere & New Holland giving it the ability for use in mixed fleet transmissions.

Qualube TT TRANS 10w/20A dedicated lower viscosity product, designed to meet the Case MS1209 specification. It is also formulated for use as a multi- purpose hydraulic/transmission/wet brake fluid for agricultural tractors where lower viscosities are required.

Qualube BM Trans 10w/30This top tier UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil) meets the requirements of a vast array of OEM’s. Carrying the Volvo VCE WB 101 it is able to satisfy the vast majority of wet brake applications, including : Valtra, Massey Ferguson, CNH & John Deere amongst many others.

Qualube Sutrans Anti Squawk 10w/30This transmission oil product incorporates a high anti-squawk additive package that can satisfy issues in some tractor transmissions. Meeting many of the OEM specifications it gives a further option where this issue occurs.

Qualube Hi-Q-4 RangeThis range of transmission oil products is available in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) classification oil grades 10, 30 & 50 which are manufactured specifically to meet the CAT TO-4 specification.

Hydraulic and Industrial Lubricants Our extensive range of Qualube Hydraulic and Industrial Oils are used on a vast array of plant and machinery equipment. Providing anti-foam, anti-rust and anti-wearing properties, they are each designed to ensure excellent performance under heavy and stressful loads and wide variations of temperature. These products are available in the ISO viscosity grades: 32,46,68,100,150,220,320,460,680.


Agricultural LubricantsWe specialise in Agricultural Lubricants and our range of popular and renown Universal Oils and Transmission Fluids provide reliability to the modern farmer whatever their age and size of vehicles and equipment. Designed to maximise performance in tough operating conditions and minimise component wear and tear, each product is meticulously made to the latest specifications and demands of the vehicle and machinery manufacturers. Using the Qualube range of lubricants therefore helps ensure that warranty conditions are not jeopardised and servicing costs are kept to a minimum.

Qualube Hydrapower High Viscosity (HV) VIA superior hydraulic oil suitable for use in most hydraulic systems where a High Viscosity lubricant is required, such as self-propelled harvesters, hydrostatic drives and where heat and wear is a problem. This product is formulated using very high Shear Stable VI improvers in order to meet the high demands of Poclain Hydraulics. It is available in all the ISO viscosity grades.

Qualube Hydraulic (HM) OilA premium quality, hydraulic lubricant with excellent anti-wearing properties, that helps keep machinery down time to a minimum. With outstanding thermal and oxidation stability, this product improves reliability and cleanliness and prolongs performance. It is available in all the ISO viscosity grades.

Qualube Compressor Oil - ISO 32,46,68,100,150This widely used oil is specifically manufactured for reciprocating compressors using Ashless additives to meet the DIN 51506 specification. It is produced to satisfy most of the leading manufacturer’s requirements in the various ISO grades, dependant on the individual compressor. Due to the complexity of compressors, we strongly recommend reference to our Technical team for assistance on specific applications.

Qualube Slideway Lubricants (SW) – ISO 32,68,100,150,220 This product is manufactured using both performance & special tackiness additives to produce a high quality Slideway lubricant suitable for applications where a smooth, stick-slip free performance is required. Its non drip formula is ideal for both horizontal and vertical slideways and provides excellent machine protection.

Qualube Tipping OilA cost effective product for, use in tipping gear and on hydraulic pistons and rams.

Qualube Air Tool OilA reliable oil for use on Air Line equipment

Qualube Enviroyl Hydrasyn XT 46This is a top tier Biodegradeable Hydraulic Oil formulated to achieve full biodegradability according to all major standards. Manufactured using fully synthetic Saturated Esters, it records an FZG (lubricity) test of between 10 and 12 and has a WGK(potential water hazard) rating of 1. This is a product designed to give a far longer working life than other products. With over 4000 hours minimum Thermal Oxidation Stability Test, this product possesses excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance and is virtually non-toxic. It is ideal for use in high temperature applications. We recommend the use of clean separate measures in order to avoid cross contamination and preserve biodegradability.

Qualube Enviroyl Hydrasyn HT 46A high quality Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil formulated to achieve full biodegradability according to all major standards. Made using fully synthetic Oleate Esters, this product has a very low pour point and is designed for

Qualube BioLube RopeQual 00This is a biodegradable semi-fluid, solvent free wire rope lubricant, designed to meet the lubrication and corrosion prevention requirements of wire ropes working under all conditions. Typical applications are dockside cranes, draglines and water treatment plants, where its biodegradability is preferred for environmental reasons and its water repellent film ensures long service life of the rope.

Qualube BioLube TufQual 1This is a tough biodegradable soft grease which incorporates non-toxic solid lubricants, extreme pressure additives and a blend of antioxidants and corrosive inhibitors to provide a highly effective lubricant with excellent corrosion

Qualube Syntogear FS TDL 75W/90A TDL (Total Driveline Lubricant) formulated exclusively form synthetic base oils that can be used in both manual transmissions & axle applications. This product also has the advantage of allowing extended drain intervals in some cases up to 500,000km.

Qualube Syntogear TDL 80W/90This TDL (Total Driveline Lubricant) is a more cost effective product that can also be used in many manual transmissions & axles. This product can also allow the advantage of extended drain intervals up to 160,000km in some cases.

Qualube Bentone Grease*This “non-melting” grease is formulated from a special blend of high viscosity solvent refined paraffin base oil thickened with a bentonite clay. This non-soap grease is recommended for extremely high temperature applications. Unlike normal greases, Bentone greases retain their consistency under increasing temperatures up to 500F. It is water resistant and highly resistant to change in consistency with temperatures. It is recommended for use in furnace door bearings, heat exchange motor bearings, oven conveyor bearings, tarmac laying machines and other applications where extremely high temperatures are encountered. NLGI 2.

Qualube Silicone GreaseSilicone grease is a multi-purpose product formulated to lubricate, electrically insulate and act as a heat transfer medium. It provides excellent protection against moisture and other harsh environmental conditions. Silicone

polymers in general exhibit good resistance and remain stable when operating in an environment with elevated temperatures and it is widely used on rubber components, valves, water pipes, electronic contacts and cable joints.

Qualube Copper GreaseAnti-seize properties enable this grease to work even if the joints become so compressed that most of the compound is squeezed out, or excessive temperature flashes off the oily part of the compound. A fine film of copper particles always remain in joints or threads to prevent seizure. The excellent anti seize properties make it ideal for lubricating brake linkages. The product is also recommended as a thread lubricant on studs, pipes, casings and whenever eventual disassembly must proceed smoothly. Can be used with confidence on the threads of pipes that carry very hot and corrosive liquids or gases, where it assists sealing and allows trouble free disassembly.

Qualube Petroleum JellyA universal lubricant ideal for battery terminals and many other applications.

Semi Fluid Greases

Qualube Gear EP 0 and 00A semi fluid grease for use in gear boxes where grease is recommended because of leakage problems. It has excellent low temperature characteristics and smooth texture and can be used in a variety of applications where the NLGI 0 or 00 consistency is required.

Qualube AutoflowA red, semi-fluid water resistant grease suitable for use in areas where the presence of water and humid atmospheres can effect lubrication performance and be detrimental to corrosion protection. This is designed to be a traceable, softer grease to provide excellent pumpability even at sub- zero temperatures and when heavy greases will not turn. For us in many industrial applications but particularly used in automatic chassis equipment in the heavy haulage industry. NLGI 000.



Grease RangeOur extensive range of specialist greases are designed for a vast array of specific operating environments. The National Lubrication Grease Institution (NLGI) has established a scale to indicate the grease consistency which ranges from 000 (semi-fluid) to 6 (Block Grease). Most common is NLGI 2 which is recommended on most applications. Where application the consistency rating is given in the name of the product or at the end of the description.

Qualube Lithium Complex* This extremely popular, versatile grease, possess many outstanding qualities. As a lithium complex product it has a higher dropping point, allowing the grease to be used at higher temperatures. It is also extremely water resistant and has a good shear stability rating ensuring the grease maintains consistency for use in industrial and automotive applications. NLGI 2application.

Qualube Lithium Extreme Pressure 2 Grease* A multi-purpose extreme pressure grease made from lithium soap stock which imparts good high and low temperature characteristics and chemical stability.

The load carrying additives system contains no lead or metals which are environmentally undesirable. This multi-purpose grease has high resistance to mechanical breakdown, excellent oxidation resistance, good rust protection, and excellent water “washout” resistance. NLGI 2

Qualube Lithium Grease*This simple Lithium grease is an economical choice for water resistance and higher temperature uses. It is ideal for most bearings and chassis lubrication requirements. NLGI 2

Qualube Lithium Heavy Grease*This simple Lithium grease is a multi-purpose high temperature and water resistance grease as above but is of a thicker, stiffer consistency grade, where maximum protection against water penetration and solid contaminants is required. NLGI 3

Qualube Lithium Complex Extreme Pressure (EP) Moly Grease*This is a high performance grease ideal for the lubrication of industrial bearings which are placed under the most extreme of conditions. It is based on a high viscosity lithium complex and contains extreme pressure, anti-oxidation, anti-wear and anti-corrosion

additives. It also contains Molybdenum Disulphide to provide excellent resistance to high friction and shock loading. NLGI 2

Qualube Lithium Extreme Pressure 1 GreaseWith all the benefits of the EP2 product, this extreme pressure grease is made to NLGI 1, 0 and 00 consistencies.

Qualube Graphited GreaseThis calcium based graphited grease has protection against seizure in conditions when ordinary greases would fail. Also included in this grease are additives to prevent corrosion, rust and oxidation. It has been specially formulated for use on fifth wheel plates. It can also be used for heavy duty applications in industrial equipment, trucks and construction plant such as bulldozers, scrapers, loading shovels and dump trucks where a graphited grease is recommended. It will protect against shock loads and mechanical wear even in very wet conditions and is particularly effective where there are extremely heavy loads but movement is small or intermittent and where fretting corrosion is a problem.



Specialist Use Greases

A unique portfolio of specialist greases for use in arduous and extreme environments. These products out perform their conventional counterparts and provide reliable protection and long term equipment life.

Qualube Synthetic High Temp 2This premium quality lithium complex thickened grease gives high temperature resistance up to 220°C whilst considerably reducing carbon residues associated with other high temperature greases. It provides excellent lubrication at sub-zero temperatures too, making this an extremely versatile application for industries such as agriculture, bottling and canning plants, steel and paper mills, and recycling plants. NLGI 2

Qualube Ultra High Temp 2This grease is a dispersion of fine graphite particles, incorporated in a synthetic fluid which evaporates cleanly at extreme high temperatures of up to 600°C. No abrasive ash deposits are left behind and it is therefore ideal for use in extreme high temperature environments such as ceramic and cement manufacturing, foundry businesses, kiln car bearings, furnace doors and drying tunnel mechanisms. Qualube Ultra Life 2This is a premium quality, extremely stable multi complex red grease, designed to provide extended re-lubrication intervals in a wide range of working conditions. It has exceptional load bearing capacity which promotes long component life and is widely used in agriculture, HGV’s forestry, construction, offshore and quarrying industries. NLGI 2

Qualube Ultra Life Water Resistant (WR) 2Similar to Qualube Ultra Life 2, this grease offers long re-lubrication intervals but in addition has excellent water resistant qualities and extreme pressure performance. It is an incredibly versatile lubricant with a wide temperature range for use in a multitude of industries. NLGI 1/2

Qualube Heavy Duty (HD) Adhesive 2This is a premium quality, semi-synthetic, water proof extreme pressure grease, designed specifically for slow to medium speed plain and anti-friction bearing applications in the marine industry and other hostile environments. It is widely used in the water utilities industry, waterways, harbours and docklands on

equipment such as sluice gates, boat trailers, locks and pivot points. NLGI 2

Qualube WaterQual 2This is an excellent fully water resistant long life grease, for use in high load or extreme water or saturated operating conditions and can be applied directly onto wet surfaces. WaterQual also withstands high temperature environments and is ideal for a whole range of industries where these conditions apply.

Qualube Synthetic Gearbox Grease 000This fully synthetic semi-fluid grease is recommended for use in worm reduction units which are subjected to high loads. It is also recommended for use with spur, helical and spiral bevel enclosed gearboxes. It transmits maximum power with minimum temperature rise on the working parts and has no detrimental effect on common seals and gaskets. NLGI 000

Qualube Sprayable Gear Lube 0This is an easy to apply semi fluid aluminium complex grease which leaves a lasting thin, almost dry film which does not collect dust or dirt. It is totally water repellent and has been specifically developed for the lubrication of all types of open gears, steel tyres and supporting rollers that operate under heavy loads and in high temperatures. NLGI 0

Qualube Open Gear Grease 2.5This is a thickened grease incorporating extreme pressure additives and corrosion inhibitors for use on all types of open gears that are subject to extreme loads, high working temperature and water saturated conditions. Widely used on telescopic crane jibs, gantry crane gears, girth gears on ball mills, winch gears and hydraulic ram slides, this is a totally water repellent product which is easy to apply in all weathers. NLGI 2.5

Qualube Pin and Bush Lubricant (PBL) Grease 2.5This is a tenacious grease designed for heavy duty applications where adhesion, shock loading and good corrosion protection is needed. It has been proven ideal for use on bucket pins and bushes on heavy earth moving equipment, crane slews and also as an assembly and running in compound. The presence of graphite will fill surfaces and distribute load evenly preventing unnecessary wear and tear giving ideal suitability to extend the life of worn components. It is also fully resistant to water. NLGI 2/3

Qualube Vibration Resistant Grease 2.5For use as an anti-friction bearing grease, this is a premium quality semi synthetic product

designed to withstand high loads and vibration. The thickener system used in this grease forms its own seal so providing a special added protection to the working surfaces and gives stronger mechanical stability. NLGI 2/3

Qualube Fifth Wheel GreaseAs the name suggests this is a specialist grease for use on the fifth wheels of articulated vehicles. It has a high level of lubricating solids which keeps the working surfaces apart, reduces the compression wear and substantially extends the life of the fifth wheel, trailer slides and locating pins. This grease will enable an articulated unit to slide much easier under a fully laden trailer. It is fully resistant to the wet which is vital during the cleaning of vehicles and its adhesion improvers provide long lasting protection and anti-corrosion qualities to all the working parts.

Qualube PTFE Mechanical Parts Grease 2.5This lithium complex quality thickened grease is for the specific lubrication of mechanical parts and sliding joints in a wide range of industrial and automotive applications. A leading crane hire company has reported that this product has eliminated “judder” when used on the nylon slipper pads of the extending booms of their larger cranes. Standard greases are prone to building up when the booms are retracted and the grease tends to fall off. This product eliminates this waste and mess. Other applications would include swivel joints, king pins and spindles of heavy plant machinery together with gears and transmissions and rolling and plain bearings. NLGI 2/3

Grease Range Food Grade Greases

All registered by the Food and Drug Administration, these greases are specially designed for use in the food industry. Typical operators would be bakeries, dairies, bottling plants, animal and pet food manufacturers. The purity of the products also allows use in other areas where odourless, colourless, GM free and non-toxic lubrication is required.

Qualube FoodQual PlusThis grease range is designed to cover a broad range of food safe applications, including extremes of temperature and wet and saturated environments. It also can be applied on heavy load equipment and where there is a presence of dust and other contaminants.

It contains Extreme Pressure additives to provide a high degree of wear and tear performance. Suitable for all plain and anti-friction bearings as well as sliding surface and with an exceptional degree of water resistance, it is available in NLGI 00, 1 and 2 consistencies.

Qualube FoodQual High Temperature This grease is a superb, high temperature resistant food grade grease, which gives long term lubrication, leaving greatly reduced levels of carbon deposits compared to other greases. It offers excellent sealing qualities for components working in wet conditions, therefore protecting from corrosion and is also rubber friendly. Particularly resistant to a wide range of chemical cleaning solutions used in the food and drink industries, it can operate in a temperature range from -20°C to +220°C. NLGI 2.

Qualube White Food Grease This is a premium quality, water resistant grease, used in food processing environments where incidental food contact may occur. Applications include bakery mixing machines, conveyor bearings and pump bearings and areas where frequent wash down is essential.

Technical InformationLubrication DefinitionsFrictionWhen any two surfaces rub against each other, friction will occur. Friction generates heat and thus a loss in power with wear and tear deforming or destroying the two materials. Introducing a lubricant between the two surfaces has the effect of reducing the friction causing the damage. Optimal lubrication is achieved when the exact film of oilis between the two surfaces.

ViscosityThe viscosity is a lubricating oil quality indicator, which is an arbitrary measure for the change in viscosity against temperature. The viscosity of a lubricant decreases as temperature increases and the viscosity of a lubricant is closely related to its ability to reduce friction. Generally, the thinnest lubricant is ideal which still forces the two moving surfaces apart. If the lubricant is too thick, it will require a lot of energy to move the surfaces. If it is too thin, the surfaces will rub and friction will increase.

Viscosity IndexThe viscosity index applies to the viscosities of the oil at various temperatures - the higher the index of the lubricant the more stable the viscosity of the oil at temperature and under load.

Multi-Grade OilsMulti-Grade oils are made possible by adding polymers to the oil. The Polymers allow the oil to have different weights at different temperature. Multi-Grade oils are classified by numbers. The first number indicates the viscosity of the oil at a cold temperature, while the second number indicates the viscosity at an operating temperature.

At cold temperatures, the Polymers are coiled up and allow the oil to flow as their low numbers would indicate. As the oil warms up, the Polymers begin to unwind into long chains that prevent the oil from thinning as much as it normally would. The result is that at 100°C, the oil has thinned only as much as the higher viscosity number indicates. Another way of looking at Multi-Grade oils is to think of a 20W - 50 as a 20 weight oil that will not thin more that a 50 weight would when hot.

Mono-Grade versus Multi-GradeMono-Grade oils, as by their name, work at their optimal lubrication at a limited outside temperature range. Multi-Grade oils have a stretched range of viscosity which allows a greater difference of outside temperature for optimal lubrication.

DetergencyThis is the lubricant’s capacity to remove/clean the varnish and carbon residues deposited inside the engine.

DispersionThis is the oil’s capacity to prevent the accumulation and depositof sludge.

Industry and Products Definitions

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International classification of oils on the basis of their viscosities. Grades marked ‘W’ are at a temperature below 0°C (W = winter). The lowerthe number next to the ‘W’, the lower the pouring temperature of the lubricant.

ACEA – European Automobile Manufacturers AssociationThe ACEA European Oil Sequences define the minimum quality level of Service-fill Oils that ACEA members demand for using these oils in their vehicles. These sequences define the minimum quality level of a product for presentation to ACEA members.

Society of Automotive EngineersThe SAE viscosity classification defines solely viscosity limits at high and low temperature for any grade of lubricant oil. The SAE grade is intended as guide to the choice of the right viscosity for different outside temperatures.

The American Petroleum Institute (API)The American Petroleum Institute (API) classification system is for engines and gearbox differentials. It is a guide to the choice of the right oil for significantly different operating conditions. Examples of API specifications are as follows:

A/B: Petrol and Diesel Engine OilsA1/B1 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use at extended drain intervals in petrol engines and car & light van diesel engines specifically designed to be capable of using low friction low viscosity oils with a high temperature / high shear rate viscosity of 2.6 mPa*s for xW/20 and 2.9 to 3.5 mPa.s for all other viscosity grades. These oils are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.

A3/B3 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use in high performance petrol engines and car & light van diesel engines and/or for extended drain intervals where specified by the engine manufacturer, and/or for year-round use of low viscosity oils, and/or for severe operating conditions as defined by the engine manufacturer.

A3/B4 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use in high performance petrol and direct injection diesel engines, but also suitable for applications described under A3/B3.

A5/B5 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use at extended drain intervals in high performance petrol engines and car & light van diesel engines designed to be capable of using low friction low viscosity oils with a High temperature / High shear rate (HTHS) viscosity of 2.9 to 3.5 mPa.s. These oils are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.

C: Catalyst compatibility oilsCl Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oil in vehicles with DPF and TWC in high performance car and light van diesel and petrol engines requiring low friction, low viscosity, low SAPS oils with a minimum HTHS viscosity of 2.9 mPa.s. These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life and maintain the vehicles fuel economy.

C2 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oil in vehicles with DPF and TWC in high performance car and light van diesel and petrol engines designed to be capable of using low friction, low viscosity oils with a minimum HTHS viscosity of 2.9mPa.s. These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life and maintain the vehicles fuel economy.

C3 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oil in vehicles with DPF and TWC in high performance car and light van diesel and petrol engines, with a minimum HTHS viscosity of 3.5mPa.s. These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life.

C4 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oil in vehicles with DPF and TWC in high performance car and light van diesel and petrol engines requiring low SAPS oil with a minimum HTHS viscosity of 3.5mPa.s. These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life.

E: Heavy Duty Diesel engine oilsE4 Stable, stay-in-grade oil providing excellent control of piston cleanliness, wear, soot handling and lubricant stability. It is recommended for highly rated diesel engines meeting Euro I, Euro II, Euro III, Euro IV and Euro V emission requirements and running under very severe conditions, e.g. significantly extended oil drain intervals according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. It is suitable for engines without

particulate filters, and for some EGR engines and some engines fitted with SCR NOx reduction systems. However, recommendations may differ between engine manufacturers so Driver Manuals and/or Dealers shall be consulted if in doubt.

E6 Stable, stay-in-grade oil providing excellent control of piston cleanliness, wear, soot handling and lubricant stability. It is recommended for highly rated diesel engines meeting Euro I, Euro II, Euro III, Euro IV and Euro V emission requirements and running under very severe conditions, e.g. significantly extended oil drain intervals according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. It is suitable for EGR engines, with or without particulate filters, and for engines fitted with SCR NOx reduction systems. E6 quality is strongly recommended for engines fitted with particulate filters and is designed for use in combination with low sulphur diesel fuel. However, recommendations may differ between engine manufacturers so Driver Manuals and/or Dealers shall be consulted if in doubt.

E7 Stable, stay-in-grade oil providing effective control with respect to piston cleanliness and bore polishing. It further provides excellent wear control, soot handling and lubricant stability. It is recommended for highly rated diesel engines meeting Euro I, Euro II, Euro III, Euro IV and Euro V emission requirements and running under severe conditions, e.g. extended oil drain intervals according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. The API Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System is recognised worldwide to help identify the right oils for the right engines operating in significantly different climates and conditions. They are classified into 3 separate sections for Petrol (gasoline), Transmission Fluids and Diesel Engines.

SN Current Introduced in October 2010 for 2011 and older vehicles, designed to provide improved high temperature deposit protection for pistons, more stringent sludge control and seal compatibility. API SN with Resource Conserving matches ILSAC GF-5 by combining API SN performance with improved fuel economy, turbocharger protection, emission control system compatibility and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85.

SM Current For all automotive engines currently in use. Introduced November 30,2004. SM oils are designed to provide improved oxidation resistance, improved deposit protection, better low-temperature performance over the life of the oil. Some SM oils may also meet the latest ILSAC specification and / or qualify as Energy Conserving.

SL Current For 2004 and older automotive engines.

SJ Current For 2001 and older automotive engines.

SH Obsolete For 1996 and older engines. Valid when preceded by current C categories.

SG Obsolete For 1993 and older engines.

SF Obsolete For 1988 and older engines.

SE Obsolete CAUTION - NOT suitable for use in petrol (gasoline) powered automotive engines built after 1979.

SD Obsolete CAUTION - NOT suitable for use in petrol (gasoline) powered automotive engines built after 1971. Use in more modern engines may cause unsatisfactory performance or equipment harm.

Category Status Service

CJ-4 Current For high speed four stroke cycle diesel engines designed to meet 2010 model year on highway and Tier 4 non road exhaust emission standards as well as for previous model year diesel engines. These oils are formulated for use in all applications with diesel fuels ranging in sulphur content up to 500 ppm, (0.05% by weight). However the use of these oils with greater than 15ppm (0.0015% by weight) sulphur fuel may impact exhaust after treatment system durability and/or drain interval. Cj-4 OILS are especially effective at sustaining emission control system durability where particulate filters and other advanced after treatment systems are used. Optimum protection is provided for control of catalyst poisoning, particulate filter blocking, engine wear, piston deposits, low and high temperature stability, soot handling properties, oxidative thickening, foaming and viscosity loss due to shear. API CJ-4 oils exceed the performance criteria of API CI-4 with CI-4 PLUS CI-4, CH-4, CG-4 and CF-4 and can effectively lubricate engines calling for those API Service Categories. When using CJ-4 oil with higher than 15ppm sulphur fuel, consult the engine manufacturer for service interval.

CI-4 Current Introduced in 2002. For high-speed, four-stroke engines designed to meet 2004 exhaust emission standards implemented in 2002. CI-4 oils are formulated to sustain engine durability where exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is used and are intended for use with diesel fuels ranging in sulphur content up to 0.5% weight. Can be used in place of CD, CE, CF-4, CG-4, and CH-4 oils. Some CI-4 oils may also qualify for the CI-4 PLUS designation.

CH-4 Current Introduced in 1998. For high-speed, four-stroke engines designed to meet 1998 exhaust emission standards. CH-4 oils are specifically compounded for use with diesel fuels ranging in sulphur content up to 0.5% weight Can be used in place of CD, CE, and CG-4 oils.

CG-4 Obsolete Introduced in 1995. For severe duty, high-speed, four-stroke engines using fuel with less than 0.5% weight sulphur. CG-4 oils are required for engines meeting 1994 emission standards. Can be used in place of CD, CE and CF-4 oils.

CF-4 Current Introduced in 1990. For high-speed, four-stroke, Naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines. Can be used in place of CD and CE oils.

CF-2 Current Introduced in 1994. For severe duty, two-stroke-cycle engines. Can be used in place of CD-II oils.

CF Current Introduced in 1994. For off-road, indirect-injected and other diesel engines including those using fuel with over 0.5% weight sulphur. Can be used in place of CD oils.

CE Obsolete Introduced in 1985. For high-speed, four-stroke, naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines. Can be used in place of CC and CD oils.

CD-11 Obsolete Introduced in 1985. For two-stroke cycle engines.

CD Obsolete Introduced in 1955. For certain naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines.
