for SOPRANO, SOPRANO SAXOPHONE,
BASS CLARINET, HORN IN F, VIOLIN,
CELLO, PERCUSSION 1, PERCUSSION 2
!
The Wisdom of Emily
Date: June 2011
Premiere: July 14, 2011. Emily Brand, soprano; Casey Grev, soprano saxophone; Jeannie Psomas, bass clarinet; Ben Brody, horn; Samantha Spena,
violin; Sophie Chan, cello; Michael Jarrett, percussion 1; Ben Kipp,
percussion 2.
Searcy Hall, Brevard Music Center. Brevard, NC.
Duration: Total – 6:15
I. Ideal Conversation – 1:30
II. Consideration to All – 1:30
III. The Bore – 3:15
Instrumentation: Soprano, Soprano Saxophone, Bass Clarinet, Horn in F, Violin, Cello, Percussion 1, Percussion 2
Program Notes: Emily Post is known mostly for her views about etiquette; which fork and knife to use, how to plan a wedding, and how to sit like a proper
lady. Little is she known, however, for her philosophical views. This
piece looks between the lines of Emily’s book Etiquette and highlights her anecdotes about how to live a better life. The music, infused with
her lively and witty voice, mixes humor with truly relevant and weighty
observations, creating an inspiring gestalt that is unique to Emily Post;
thus, The Wisdom of Emily.
Performance Notes: for the Soprano
Ideal Conversation, mm. 5 – 6; smoothly and slowly, the pure
straight tone drifts upward from F, reaching towards the natural
vibrato finally achieved on Ab
"wh" sound – Ideal Conversation, mm. 17; vocalize an “h” in the word “wit”
Consideration to All, mm. 9 –10; scoop
from underneath the pitches indicated
in a speech-like manner, reminiscent
of the song “What is This Feeling” from
on Glinda’s lyrics, “unusually and
exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite
impossible to describe”
for the Soprano Saxophone
The Bore, mm. 32 – 43; scoop from underneath the pitches indicated, creating a fun and
wonky effect, reminiscent of circus music
for the Horn in F
The Bore, mm. 10 – 15; using both lip and hand, slowly glissando from the top pitch
given into the sfz pitch, creating an easy falling gesture
The Bore, mm. 32 – 43; starting with the hand inside the bell, but not
completely stopped, and then bringing it out, creates a bend into the written
pitch from below, creating a sloppy, obnoxious scoop reminiscent of circus
music – meant to be comical and boisterous
for the Violin and Cello
strum – The Bore, mm. 9 – 15, 19, 32 – 43; as explained in the score, the notes are to be strummed all
together, quickly, not rolled, like strumming a chord on a guitar
drunkenly – The Bore, mm. 21 – 22; glissando sloppily from note to note, taking the whole beat to get
from one to the other, creating a drunken, sloppy effect

The Wisdom of Emily
Ideal Conversation
Ideal conversation is an exchange of thought, and not, as many of those who worry about
their shortcomings believe, an eloquent exhibition of wit or oratory.
(p. 44)
Consideration to All
It is only those who are afraid that someone will encroach upon their exceedingly insecure
dignity who show neither courtesy or consideration except to those who they think it would
be to their advantage to please. At the very moment we set ourselves up with an "I am better
than thou" attitude, we become as intolerable to others as we ourselves are intolerant.
(p. 64, 138)
The Bore It has been said of the bore that he is one who talks about himself when you want to talk
about yourself. This is superficially true. But a bore might be more accurately described as
one who insists on telling you, at length, something that you don't want to hear about at all.
He insists that you hear him out to the bitter end, in spite of your plainly shown boredom.
He will tell the same story time after time, every tiresome detail is held up and turned about
like a morsel of delectability!
On the other hand, to be bored is a bad personal habit, and one only too easy to acquire.
There is no reason why you should be bored when you can be otherwise! So when you find
yourself sitting in the hedgerow with nothing but weeds, there is no reason for shutting your eyes and seeing nothing instead of finding what beauty you may in the weeds.
(p. 49)
