Farm planning for the future
Farmers will have an opportunity to learn more about developing whole farm plans through a series of subsi-dised courses to be held over autumn and winter.
The Whole Farm Planning course will be available to local landholders for only $500, which is half the usual cost, thanks to a 50% subsidy provided by Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority through National Landcare funding.
The course, consisting of six one-day workshops to be delivered by Quality Rural Solutions (QRS) in conjunction with Tocal College will assist farmers in producing their own property plans for future farm and business development. These plans will include developing strategies for improving water and soil quality, improving drought resistance, conserving bio-diversity, controlling weeds, and improving productivity in a sustainable way.
Alison Elvin, educator, farmer and environmental consultant with more than 25 years experience in the area, will conduct the workshops.
“The workshops will not only involve tuition and advice, but will include practical advice in the form of field trips to properties to see whole farm plans in action,” Alison said.
“Along with the six one-day training sessions, participants will receive a comprehensive technical manual, the overlays for their farm plan, and several books including Physical Property Planning.”
Places are limited, so interested farmers are invited to register as soon as possible with David Rush, Southern Rivers CMA Landcare Community Support Officer on 4842 2594 or Tiffany Royds, QRS Program Coordinator on 4842 1225.
Courses commence on 13 May, with later dates to be determined by participant interest. For further details see www.qualityruralsolutions.com.au.

WILD WINDELLAMA By Paul Alessi www.wild.windellama.com [email protected]
Autumn is the best time to plant native farm trees in Windellama, If frosts have already started and you are planting out, colder sites along gully and creek lines, make sure your potted tubestock have been slowly hardened off. If the correct species have been chosen, most will survive the coldest conditions. Hill slopes and hill tops are a few degrees warmer but can have less moisture and poorer soil, so choosing the most appropriate species will maximise your success. For deciduous trees it's best to wait until mid winter to plant out. The following two species have been successful in Windellama. Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus regnans) This is the one and only true Mountain Ash, a native to Victoria and Tasmania only and does not occur naturally in NSW, the trees in the photograph were planted around 10 years ago and the tallest is now 45 ft high. The site for these was chosen carefully, they are in a black soil gully that is home to tall White Stringybarks and are protected from the wind in all directions by the surrounding slopes and remaining stringybarks. The timber of Mountain Ash is marketed under the name "Tasmanian Oak". A Mountain Ash tree was the tallest tree in the world standing at 470ft high (143m) If the trees in the pho-tographs get to half this height, they will be visible from most parts of Windellama and beyond.
Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) This species is native to the West Coast and Rocky Mountains of the USA, once called Giant Arbor-vitae they can grow to 197ft (60m) in height. The timber is soft, reddish-brown, exceptionally light and will last a lifetime out of doors without any chemical treatment. The timber is also very valuable and is used for nearly all cedar cladding on houses, outdoor furniture, boats, ladders, poles etc. The tree in the photo is a feature tree in our house paddock and was planted 15 years ago, it's now 14 years since I watered it, and despite it being planted in quite poor yellow clay it is now over 43 ft high. Western Red Cedar may be a more valuable alterna-tive to Radiata Pine for the Windellama area.
We have some native tubestock for sale at
the moment, and they are hardened off ready for planting.

State Member for Burrinjuck For enquiries about State matters or to arrange an interview with me, please phone the above number or 6226 3311, fax 6226 3345 or write to me at PO Box 600 Yass NSW 2582 email theBurrinjuck Electorate Office at [email protected] or visit www.burrinjuck.com.
Advancing Burrinjuck
In May NSW will celebrate 150 years of democratically elected Government. This tradition has stood us in good stead as we enjoy political freedoms that are amongst the best in the world. However the protection of our freedoms has come at a terribly high cost. On ANZAC Day we remember that more than 100,000 Australians died in the conflicts of last century. It is their sacrifice and the sacrifice of many hundreds of thousands more Australians who were wounded or who served their country in conditions of extreme hardship that have protected the freedoms which we enjoy today. Each year on ANZAC Day we remember those who have served and those who have given their lives to protect our future and the future of our children.
*** Parliament was in session for two weeks this month. It was a great pleasure to attend the dedication of the Rotary Heritage Columns in Goulburn. Also in Goulburn I was very pleased to open this year’s Goulburn Show. While I was in Sydney for Parliament, I met with the Minister for Health and several members of Goulburn’s medical community to inform him of issues of concern about Goulburn Base Hospital.
While in Sydney for the second week of Parliamentary sittings I met with some Taralga locals in Parliament House and also hosted the Royal Agricultural Society Show Girl Finalists and Young Rural Achievement Award finalists, including Virginia Cheetham from Currawang near Goulburn and Ben Anderson from Binda. I also caught up with Lauren Melrose and Emily Burgess during the Batlow Technology School’s Leadership Program Visit to Parlia-ment House.
*** Parliament In a major speech I spoke about the effect that the Carr/Iemma Labor Government’s high workers compensation premiums are having on businesses in the Burrinjuck electorate. This month I also spoke about the actions of the Department of Planning, that have caused significant concern to a local business and I highlighted the great work done by the Murrumburrah High School Farm Club.
I have raised many issues of concern to the local elector-ate this month, including air-conditioning for Boorowa Central School, closure of the Oolong Level Crossing, safety of nursing staff, wind farms, the ACT Cross Border Water Agreement, treatment for cancer patients, public transport and repairs to country road bridges.
Youth Parliament I recently advertised that the 2006 Youth Parliament that will be held in the NSW Parliament in July. This is an ex-cellent opportunity for young people from years 9 to 12 to gain an insight into the running of the NSW Parliament and to have a direct say in presenting their ideas to
Government Ministers and Members of Parliament. Applications to participate in the great event are now closed and I have great pleasure in announcing that Sam Humphries, Joseph Prevedello and Olivia Stennett from Goulburn and Meredith Hunt from Coolac, will be representing the electorate of Burrinjuck.
So How’s our State Going? The official annual economic growth rate for each State was announced recently, raising concerns about the economic management of NSW by the Carr/Iemma Labor Government. In order of growth: Northern Territory 11.5%, Western Australia 10.4%, Queensland 6.4%, Tasmania 5.2%, ACT 4.9%, Victoria 3.3%, South Australia 2.9% and NSW 2%. These figures confirm the poor economic management of the Carr/Iemma Labor Government.
Bourke Street Health Service Fundraising The Bourke Street Health Service, which was formerly known as the St John of God Hospital, is seeking greater support for the fundraising committee and its volunteer program. Although the name change has caused some concern in the Goulburn community, the health needs of the facility and the dedication of the staff and volunteers has not changed. Volunteers fill many important roles such as visitation, reading to patients, massage, crafts and fundraising. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please contact Mrs Sandra Bill on 48237 883.
Do Not Contact Each week I receive many phone calls from constituents who are upset about unsolicited nuisance phone calls from businesses and other organizations. The Federal Govern-ment is putting in place a Do Not Call Register to protect consumers against unwanted telemarketing phone calls. It is expected that the register will be operational next year.
Until the Federal Government register is up and running, there is a private company that is currently offering to put residents on a Do Not Contact List that is circulated to all telemarketing organizations. However there is a cost for this service. More information about this private company can be obtained by calling the Do Not Contact Register of Australia on 1300 734 287. Justices of the Peace The Justices of the Peace Act 2002 commenced on 8 December 2003. The Act changed the length of Justice of the Peace appointments to 5 years. At the end of this five-year term, a JP can renew their appointment for a further five-year period.
This change affects Justices of the Peace who were appointed under the old legislation. These Justices of the Peace must be reappointed by 8 December 2006 if they wish their original appointment to continue. Reappointment applications must be lodged with the Attorney General’s office by 31 August 2006 to allow them to be processed in time. Reapplication forms are available from my office by phoning 6226 3311, freecall 1800 002580 or by email to [email protected]
