Leon’s JewelryA Piece for a Gentleman

Recently I walked into a Jewelry store in Downtown Williston. I don’t know why I went in nor do I know what I was looking for, like most men Jewelry stores can feel uncomfortable and daunting. However, I stumbled upon a product that I can’t live without.

When you catch a glance of it, you may call it a pocketknife but once you hold itand examine it you will stutter to find a better name for it. Leathermans and OldTimers will always hold a spot in my heart, as I remember growing up watching my grandfather each night sharpening his oldtimer.

The product that I am speaking of is created by a company named William Henry. According to their web site, William Henry is devoted to the vision of designing and building the finest tools possible. Founded in 1997 by partners Mattew William Conable and Michael Henry Honack. William Henry has grown from a one-man shop to a 20 person company that has established a new benchmark of excellence.

“The seamless integration of classic natural materials and state-of-the-art alloys is a hallmark of William Henry’s work — no compromises, no shortcuts, and exceptional quality. Each component is precision machined to tolerances reserved for aerospace level work — often measured at 0.0005”, or one-twelfth the size of a human hair.

The final fit, finish, action, and sharpness of each knife are achieved entirely by hand, employing the irreplaceable craftsmanship developed by generations of master cutlers.” – You can’t ask for more. This is not the proper piece for every man but this is the proper knife for a GENTLEMAN.

“Every pocket knife we make is a distinctive heirloom-quality testament to the art of knife making. Each piece takes more than seven months to produce, and incorporates the work of more than 30 artisans across 800 individual operations.“

Leon’s Jewelry in downtown Williston sells William Henry Knives, Pens, and Money Clips. They have a great selection and are fairly priced. Perfect for a father’s day present.

The day after the Senate followed the House of Representatives in voting to declare war against Great Britain, President James Madison signs the declaration into law, and the War of 1812 begins. The American war declaration had been called in response to the British economic blockade of France, the induction of American seaman into the British Royal Navy against their will, and the British support of hostile Indian tribes along the Great Lakes frontier.

Southeast Montana has a wide range of activites. From art & culture, museums, parks, shopping, and endless outdoor and recreation opportunites. Here is a top ten list of things to do in the area:

#1 Little Big Horn Battlefield National Monument - This site, previously known as Custer Battlefield, memorializes one of the greatest battles fought between the U.S. Cavalry and the plains Indians.

#2 Maksohika State Park - Badlands scenery, dinosaur digs, and over 11,000 acres of undeveloped hiking opportunities come together to make up Montana’s largest State Parks.

#3 Pompeys Pillar - was a meeting place for Native American tribes who camped and hunted in the area. They left their mark on the stone in the form of symbols and images. William Clark left his signature on the stone when he camped here in 1806.

#4 Range Ridgers Museum - In 1876, shortly after Custer and his 7th Cavalry was defeated at the Little Bighorn, the U.S. government saw the need to establish a semi-permanent military presence to secure the area from future attacks.

#5 Chief Plenty Coups State Park - Plenty Coups was a man of war - and then a man of peace - whose vision has helped bridge a gap between two cultures. Recognized for his bravery and leadership, he was made a chief of the Apsáalooke (Crow) Tribe by age 28.

#6 Bighorn Canyon National Rec Area - Enjoy architectural marvels, world class fishing, breathtaking scenery and historic discovery, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area is a must see for any visitor to Southeast Montana.

#7 Big Horn County Historical Museum - complex consists of 24 historic structures, two farm exhibit buildings and a main exhibit building which features a rotating exhibit, visitor center and gift shop.

#8 Calypso Trail and the Terry Badlands - The Calypso Trail near Terry, MT is arguably the most beautiful scenic drive in Southeast Montana. The Trail cuts through the badlands in a mosaic of colorful sandstone bridges, spires, and buttes formed from thousands of years of wind and water action.

#9 Swords park is a must see in Billings - Several miles of paved and unpaved trails perfect for jogging, walking, or bicycling are easily assessable from any point on the Heritage Trail system.

#10 Warior Trail - Highway 212 - This stretch of highway has been officially designated as the Warrior Trail not only for those warriors who fought along its path, but for the pioneers and settlers who defied the odds and built communities where before there was only prairie.

(ARA) - Some analysts say the rebound has begun and home prices may rise by the end of 2012. This means now may be buyers’ last chance to take advantage of affordable properties and low interest rates. If you want to score a bargain before the housing market recovers, you’ll need to follow a few rules to invest with certainty.

Rule 1: Position yourself for successBefore starting your search, get preapproved for a mortgage. Work with an experienced real estate agent who can help guide you through the daunting sea of foreclosures and short sales.

Rule 2: Do your researchWork with your agent to ensure the contract requires any delinquent taxes, liens or assessments will be paid prior to you taking ownership of the prospective property.

Rule 3: Always get a home inspection An inspector will visually examine the condition of the home’s roof, attic and insulation, foundation, basement and structural components, as well as interior plumbing and electrical systems. Be sure to find an ASHI-

Certified Inspector (ACI) to ensure your inspector is experienced, as many states have minimal licensing requirements.

Rule 4: Budget for repairs After receiving your inspection report, you can estimate costs associated with necessary repairs, maintenance or energy-efficient improvements.

Rule 5: Assess the neighborhoodA home has limited worth if it’s located in a less desirable neighborhood. These locations are likely to see a slower recovery than more populated or favorable areas less affected by the economy. Make location as important as price when making your long-term purchase decision.

Protect yourself with knowledge and expert advice to make a confident, smart decision about your largest investment.

Best Tipper: Drew Barrymore - We have it on the good word of Ugly Betty star Ana Ortiz, who was a bartender for years before her big break, that Drew Barrymore is a peach to serve. Ortiz says that Barrymore would double up the bill, tipping 100 percent, both of the times she served the Charlie’s Angels star.

Worst Tipper: Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman - He and his wife are considered to be very high maintenance. They expect the VIP treatment and only tip 5%. At a TGI Fridays in Waikiki they tipped $10 for a $250 tab.

License plates from at least 25 states were in the Williston State College parking lot earlier this week. The vehicles belonged to nearly 1,000 job seekers who travelled to Williston for a 2-day job fair.

More than 30 area businesses were on hand to meet with the men and women who came looking for work. A lot of the companies shared a common goal – to find long-term employees.

Strata Corporation is looking to make a commitment to the right people. Strata was trying to fill a number of positions throughout North Dakota and Minnesota. One of the things that sets Strata apart is they are a North Dakota-based company.

Savage Services is planning to open its Trenton Railport this summer, a large multi-user rail terminal in Trenton. Savage

was looking for entry level coordinators and transload operators who would be committed to the company.

Adler Hot Oil Service was recruiting five truck drivers who would be willing to grow with them - career-minded individuals.

Job seekers came from all over the US for the job fair – from Florida to Alaska and everywhere in between.

“The guys that are coming up here – we have lost our homes and our businesses,” said Merrick Lee, formerly of Florida. He said his plumbing business started struggling in 2004 and eventually he lost it and became homeless. While he has a good paying job with Deer Valley Trucking hauling water, he doesn’t have permanent housing. “It’s ridiculous to be homeless and walking around with $3,000-$4,000 in your pocket,” Lee said.

Another Florida man was networking at the job fair. Bobby Black, formerly of Miami, has been living and working out of Minot for the past nine months.

Sue Montgomery of Missoula, Montana, recently relocated to Froid. She’s living in an RV with her brother-in-law. She came to the job fair looking for a truck driving job.

The job fair was sponsored by Train ND Northwest, Job Service North Dakota and Williston Economic Development. Organizers hoped that the event would help connect employers with job seekers. “It’s a win-win situation,” said Cindy Sanford of Job Service Williston. “We hope employers will find the people that they need.” - Williston Economic Development.

Oil Patch school districts seeing an influx of new students are in a state of emergency, superintendents told legislators Thursday during a meeting.

Stanley, N.D., Superintendent Kent Hjelmstad identified more than $200 million in needs for northwest North Dakota schools that anticipate as many as 3,000 new students next year.

The emergency needs include new buildings, additional staff, more buses, support for a growing special education population, teacher housing and equipment.

As housing becomes available in northwest North Dakota, more oil workers are going to bring their families and kids.

Members of the Education Funding and Taxation Committee met jointly this week in Williston with the Energy Development and Transmission Committee to tour the area and hear about the needs in oil country.

Superintendent Viola LaFontaine said modular classrooms are creating a temporary solution, but those will

soon be maxed out. About one-third of the district’s classrooms are modular, including some that are from 1981 and one that has sunk into the ground.

North Dakota will consider creating a commission similar to one that Wyoming established to help schools respond quickly to growth related to coal.

Committee chairwoman RaeAnn Kelsch, R-Mandan, said she has suggested that cities assess a fee for new homes that are being built that could be designated to new school buildings.

Legislators questioned why the increased property tax in the communities wouldn’t be able to support the growing school district.

Superintendents said that eventually the property tax will provide more support, but currently many of the students they serve live in temporary housing.

Holen said some may fear that the districts could overbuild, but school officials said they are being conservative. Williston Wire.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) - The NCAA sent a Division I football championship banner to a university in North Dakota. The only problem is it went to the wrong school.

The Grand Forks Herald reports that the 2011 NCAA Division 1 football championship banner intended for North Dakota State University in Fargo was sent to the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. NDSU won the title in January after beating Sam Houston State in Frisco, Texas.

The package listed Brian Faison as the athletics director of North Dakota State University in Grand Forks.

Faison is the athletics director for UND in

Grand Forks. Gene Taylor is the athletics director for NDSU in Fargo.

Faison says he will call Taylor and tell him the banner is at UND.

With traffic on U.S. Highway 85 between Williston and Watford City increasing, the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT)will be moving forward with plans to extend additional passing lanes.

North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple, along with the NDDOT, announced plans to spend $8.5 million to extend existing passing lanes on U.S. Highway 85, between Watford City and Williston during the 2012 construction season.

According to Dalrymple, the continued work on U.S. 85, along with the development of an additional environmental document, is part of the state’s plan to convert the highway into an undivided, four-lane highway.

“The Department of Transportation will keep to an aggressive timeline again this year for road improvement projects in western North Dakota and throughout the state,” Gov. Dalrymple said. “The state is providing unprecedented funding for infrastructure improvements and we are committed to meeting the demands that come with rapid growth.”

The NDDOT is also working to complete an environmental document which is required by the Federal Highway Administration to build a new U.S. Highway 85 bridge over the Little Missouri River, about 14 miles south of Watford City.

In addition, the NDOT will be developing Williston’s temporary and permanent truck-reliever routes, as well as rebuilding U.S. Highway 85 through Alexander

and continuing environmental work for truck bypass.

According to the NDDOT, future projects under consideration include building additional truck-reliever routes for the cities of Dickinson, New Town and Watford City. AP

Black Hills Over ViewLast week we started a 10 week showcase of events and tourism information focusing on the Black Hills of South Dakota. We chose this area because it is a short drive from the Bakken and seems to provide an endless amount of entertainment options. So whether you are trying to meet up with your loved ones for a weekend or getting out of town with some buddies for your time off. For the next 9 weeks we will highlight four activities and business each with a different feel, to make it easy for you we have broken the activities into four categories, Accommodations, Family, Nightlife, and Outdoors. We are making a special trip to the area in a few weeks to get interviews and pictures. Please let us know if there is anything you would like us to take a special look at.

Night LifeSo you have been held up in Williston all winter long, lets not lie you have been in your share of local bars. Spending the night crowded shoulder to shoulder in a room with bearded faces, bad haircuts, and the smell of old spice and cigarette smoke covering up the smell of oil and hardwork (sweat). We have a break for you, get ready to breath and enjoy the evening.

The Zbar and Nightclub on Main Street in Spearfish, South Dakota. Owned by Chad and Zac Zandstra. This is one of the nicest bars you will find in North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. The service is great featuring a friendly and fast serving staff.

The Zbar offeres a full bar, but no food. I found many drinks that I had only heard of until I went there, so I am confident they will have your liquor of choice. The day started out a little slower and quieter, but picked up later filling the massive bar/club. The crowd was younger, aged 25-35, mostly college students there to dance and socialize.

AccommodationsIs Sturgis in your near future? If so you need to be thinking about booking your accommodations. Weather you plan on sleeping in a hotel room, a tent, a camper you need to being giving this some thought as you only have about 9 weeks left and it is some what frowned upon to sleep in the corner booth at the last bar of the night.

We recommend that some of you check out the Buffalo Chip, located right in Sturgis. The Chip has it all, just visit their web site at www.buffalochip.com and you will see for yourself.

Welcome ToThe Black Hillsof South Dakota

With RV, Cabins, and Camping they are sure to help you find a place to lay your head for the week of fun and party. Buffalo Chip is dedicated to providing the best party of the Sturgis Rally.

Buffalo Chip is the promoter and home of the best concerts of the Rally. We will be publishing a complete article on the upcoming events of the Buffalo Chip later in this series, but please don’t forget to book your accommodations now. You can have the best ride in town, but you will still need a place to lay your head.

OutdoorsThe Black Hills of South Dakota, is known for many things, but one image comes to most peoples mind and that is a motorcycle humming through a small town along side a scenic highway with the tree covered hills in the back ground. It is not a coincidence that the Black Hills is home to the Sturgis Rally. There are 100’s of miles of good riding to be found here.

I agree with Black Hills Harley Davidson, there is no better way to experience the Black Hills of South Dakota than on the seat of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. For most here in the Williston area, you have not bought a motorcycle or your motorcycle is far from here. Well have no fear; Black Hill Harley Davidson is there to help you out.

Pati Schmidt of Black Hill Harley Davidson, explained to us that they have all sizes and types of bikes ranging from Sportsters to Trikes. Bikes are available from April 1 to October 1, and other than during the rally North Dakota Residents receive the local special of $65 for a 24 hour period. Normal prices are $150 per 24 hour period. Pati explained that all oil workers and oil field service workers working in the Bakken can take advantage of this special. Each rider will need a Driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement and a credit card. You can reserve your bike by calling 1-800-727-2482.

Unscramble the first four words in each set of s c r a m b l e s . Then use the circled letters to unscramble the final word. Some of the words may unscramble into more that one word, but only one word is related to the puzzle.

But how do I do it?

The object is to insert the numbers in the boxes to satisfy only one condition: each row, column and 3x3 box must contain the digits 1 through 9 exactly once. What could be simpler?
