Executive Summary

The Whyalla Hockey Association (WHA) was established in the 1990's as a result of a merger between the Whyalla Men's Hockey [1968] and the Whyalla Women’s Hockey Associations [1945]. The WHA has a mandate to promote and foster the sport of Hockey in the local community of Whyalla. The WHA actively works towards creating a sustainable sport and facility in Whyalla through organising a variety of hockey competitions and development squads as well as engaging in a proactive process of asset management projects. The WHA operates through a board of management that oversees the activities of a junior and senior hockey competition. The board consists of an executive, representatives from member clubs. The operations of the WHA fall to the member clubs who take on responsibility for the Whyalla Hockey & Sporting Community Club facility’s. The Whyalla Hockey and Sporting Community Club, is home of not only the Whyalla Hockey Association and its 4 member clubs but it is now home to the Whyalla Bird Society, West Whyalla Cricket Club, Whyalla Photography Group, Whyalla Homing Society, Neighbourhood Watch SA Eyre & Western Division, Filipino Cultural Association, Astronomy Group Dutch Age Care group, Family Day Care and Road Runners Baseball. A total of approximately 1000 people are now connected / visit each week as part of our amalgamation. We also each year have another 2000 people come through our doors as part of community workshops & events, regional hockey trainings and competitions and private / business functions which are held at the complex. Our guests are mostly locals with approximately 25% from our local region, including Port Lincoln, Port Augusta, Roxby Downs and Port Pirie.

7. CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

I would like to present the 2014 WHA annual report to the members for your consideration. It’s been a big and highly satisfying year for us as the WHA continues to move forward in a positive direction. Whyalla Hockey is in an excellent position at the moment with the ability to take advantage of the planning that has been put in place over the last year by the WHA board. As the Whyalla Hockey and Sporting Community Club, we have continued to grow in membership. In 2014 we have be able to attract two new clubs to our facility, we are now have over 1000 members association with our facility. Our Finance team as you will see later in this report have worked hard and our financial position continues to be healthy. I would like to thank the team for all they have volunteered in time to make this happen. One major highlight was in November we paid our final loan instalment, for the 2012 /13 grant turf replacement, we are now loan free, the first time since 1997. To the Board of WHA I would like to thank you for the support you have given me over the last 12 months. Thank you for the many hours you have committed to the association while carrying out yours roles on the board with great professionalism. It has been a great privilege and a honour to have served as Chairperson during this period. In 2015 we plan to submit a grant in the next round of the state government Recreation and Sport Facilities Program to build a new club room and installation of 2nd pitch at the Whyalla Hockey & Sporting Community Club facility. This year the Board committed funds in its budget to some much needed projects, they being, electronic scoreboard, line marker, turf lighting upgrade, Jamie Dwyer visit & POS system, these will be of a great benefit to the facilities. In closing I would like to extend a very big thank you to our sub committees and volunteers your commitment to WHA is fantastic. Without you WHA would not have been able to achieve the results it has over the past 12 months. Tony Appleyard Chairperson

9. WHYALLA HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

The Board has been active in many areas this year, with the main goal of bringing the practices of the association up to current standards and to increase the usage of the facility. The board ‘s strategic plan is always reviewed to align the association resources to deliver a sustainable organisation under the destination of ‘By 2016 we will be the Premier Hockey, Sporting & Community Organisation in the region’. The Strategic plan is focussed on delivering a strategic initiatives covering all aspects of our organisation, encompassing Finance, Hockey, Grounds and Sporting Facilities, Community Facilities, Growth and Capability. The Board is now working with council looking at ways to develop our facility. In recent years the WHA has also experienced an increase in the number of people playing hockey. For example the total WHA membership rose by 118 (22%) registrations from 527 (137 Juniors & 390 Seniors) in 2011 to 645 (178 Juniors & 467 Seniors) in 2014. Diagram 3 shows the annual statistics for the increase in the WHA junior and senior hockey registrations from 2011 to our predicted level in 2018. The two main reasons for the growth of hockey in Whyalla has been our turf replacement project which was done with the support of the Office Recreation and Sport Grant in 12/13 and the partnership we now have with four major businesses, helping to bring activity and sport to children in our region. The implication of increased membership for the WHA has been felt in several ways. First with programing the increased playing fixtures with access to only one full sized hockey pitch at the complex. The second in that the increase in players has also resulted in an increase in the number of family and friends attending the facility to watch games and use the clubrooms. The clubroom does not have enough space to comfortably accommodate the increased players and spectators. Diagram 3: WHA Winter player registrations 2011 – 2014 with predicted increases to 2018

WHA Annual report 2014: version 2015-2-20

The WHA is planning to build the following new facilities at its hockey complex at the corner of Nicolson Avenue and Searle Street:

1. A new clubroom on the site of the existing clubroom 2. A second new building to be used for Calisthenics and a multidisciplinary Health Clinic 3. A second artificial hockey pitch

Rationale for the development:

There are a number of sound reasons for proceeding with the development of the WHSCC complex at this time. Prior to the formation of the WHSCC the sole user of the complex was the WHA and its four member clubs. Since the WHSCC began the organisation has grown to include 10 different organisations besides the WHA that are now using the complex. After 4 year’s operating as the WHSCC it has become evident that the size and design of the existing clubrooms is prohibiting the efficient and effective use of the complex in light of the increase number of users. One other event in recent years that has contributed to an increase in the users of the complex is the successful grant application and subsequent funding for the construction of the new water based hockey pitch in 2012-2013 and some work on upgrading the clubroom. With the advent of the new water based pitch in 2013 (now 2 years old) there has been a significant growth in the number of people playing hockey as a direct result of that project. In addition the minor upgrade to the clubroom has also helped attract several new affiliate clubs and seen an increase in private hall hires. It is ironic that the successful grant funding application in 2012 has in fact resulted in growth that now is the reason for the WHA seeking more funding and assistance in kind to accommodate both existing and future growth. The WHA believes that this project, building a new clubroom and a second artificial hockey pitch, is one approach that can be used to address the issue of participation rates and player retention.

2014 Jamie Dwyer Visit

This year the WHA was able to bring Jamie Dwyer to Whyalla from a sportsperson night and two days of training. Over 90 people trained with Jamie over the two days, and 100 people were at the sportsmen night.

His words were very clear, Jamie said: “I don’t know why you’re all listening

to me, you should be listening to this guy!”

Whyalla Hockey & Sporting Community Club Cash Raffle 2014

The 2014 Raffle of 550 tickets and the prize money worth $5,000, again was successful due to the great take up offer from the clubs. Clubs shared $10 per ticket sold. This has now become a great revenue stream for each club involved and is now considered an annual event by the board. Our long term goal for this raffle is to get to Major Raffle status and 1000 tickets.

Facility Hire

The clubrooms were booked for 302 events during 2014 including WHA association and club meetings, affiliated club meetings, private meetings, affiliated club events and private hire. There were 18 affiliated club events that had to be held elsewhere (off-site) due to a clash in booking date and times and a further 21 private bookings that could not be accepted. That is a total of 39 bookings that could not be accepted because the venue was not big enough (& associated issues of lack of toilets etc.) and the revenue associated with those events was lost. Diagram 4 shows the 2014 booking summary including bookings that could not be accepted. Diagram 4: 2014 WHSCC clubroom bookings

11. HOCKEY COMPETITION REPORT

Our membership again grew this year; we had three new teams in the 2014 season. We again we saw strong growth in our junior competition, this is mainly due to the great work of our junior subcommittee and the partnership program with have implemented with OneSteel and Arrium. The WHA Board would like to thank all coaches and team mangers from all clubs and the WHA combine teams, success comes in part from your efforts. Congratulations also to the WHA award winners and premiers this year. We would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate our members who represented the State. At a glance:

In 2013 the WHA introduced as part of the match committee initiative a Umpiring coordinator, the position this year was filled by Steve O’Brien, who done a great job setting up parts of our new rules and continued the education process of our umpires. We had a great response from each club and their members to the education nights and we now also have three people who can assess of Hockey Ed umpires as members complete their online training. 2014 WHA Hockey Ed Coach Accreditation list

14. ONESTEEL & ARRIUM MINNING JUNIOR HOCKEY

PROGRAM REPORT

Once again the Whyalla Hockey Association would like to thank OneSteel and Arrium Mining for their partnership with us in the development and the implementing of our Junior Hockey in Whyalla Program This year we changed the program slightly, these changes were made from our experiences and learning’s from running our program’s in 2012 and 13. In the 2014 season we had 50 new first time players join the Winter Hockey competition. We now have a four part plan. Part One – Come Try Hockey Week program during term one (2 weeks), school children from nine schools took part. We had a total of 240 attendees, with an average of 30 per session. With approximately 95% being non hockey playing children.

Part Two – The Hockey SA Academy Program, which provided athletes identified to have the potential to become an elite athlete within the next three to five years with technical coaching provided to support current and aspiring state level players. Hockey SA’s Athlete and Coach Development Manager managed the program. The program started in October 2014 and will run well into the middle of 2015. Through OneSteel and Arrium’s support we were able to purchase equipment and cover the cost of the turf water usage. This program not only benefited the athletes but also the four coaches who were selected by Hockey SA to provide the training.

Part Three – We conducted school sessions to eight schools over a six week program. These sessions introduced hockey as a sport and activity to over 700 school children in Whyalla. Part Four [completed in 2015] – Through OneSteel and Arrium’s support we are able to purchase equipment, which again will be distributed among the first year players and make the sport free to all registered players of the junior school competition. We will also be providing all players with a free playing T Shirt for the start of the 2015 season. This plan will target over 200 school children in Whyalla
