Welsh Salon Of Photography 2012
FOREWORD President of the Welsh Photographic Federation andWelsh Salon Chairman’s Introduction
Welcome to the Welsh Salon of Photography 2012. After an extremely stressful year, it is good to see a constant. The Salon and Spring coincide and give hope for what is to come, I feel. This year, the feeling is even more pro-nounced and I hope it can be a harbinger of more positive things to come. This year the Salon is being hosted by Abertawe Photographic Society at Swansea Museum. The official opening will be Saturday, May 5th. It would be good to see as many people there as possible. Thanks to Mike Evans and Abertawe members for their support.Entries are slightly down this year but, had you been at the selection week-end, the lower numbers would not have been obvious looking at the large
number of prints. The selectors: Margery Maskell ARPS MPAGB EFIAP/b, Kevin Maskell FRPS MPAGB EFIAP/b and Phil Ray CPAGB had a difficult task which they undertook with great diligence and perception. It was good that Margery was able to overcome health problems to be with us. Many thanks to all.Congratulations to all those who have had work selected. Those who won awards and commendations deserve special mention: extremely well done. The number of awards going to members of Inn Focus Group is worthy of special mention. It’s a fantastic achievement. I hope other clubs will take note.Tenby and Bridgend were winners and runners up respectively, in both Trophy competitions. Well done to both. This means that Tenby and Bridgend will represent the WPF at the PAGB print com-petition in Connah’s Quay later in the year.I’d like to make a brief point, in passing, about concerns over not getting points for honours with this Salon. The Welsh Salon of Photography is intended to be an annual exhibition, not a salon like international salons - that is the role of WIPIS which will take place in August. My thanks go to the willing band of people who help to label prints; move boxes and prints on selec-tion days; feed the workers. All you do is greatly appreciated and my thanks can never be fulsome enough.Jan Cawley and Ed Cloutman are, again, responsible for photographing the prints and creating a slide show. Thank you both.Special thanks this year to Steve Littlewood who has volunteered, or been volunteered, for the task of compiling the catalogue. I appreciate your work. Thank you, Steve. Finally, my special thanks to the human dynamo who is Linda Baldwin, without whom life would be much more difficult.

It was a great pleasure to be asked to judge the Welsh Federation Exhibition. Some people say this is a hard job, but to us it was nice to see a lot of images, with a variety of subject matter. There were images of various types that we do not take ourselves, but we can still appreciate a well executed image, whether straight or manipulated.
As you start to judge you normally find that the highest standard of images will come to the top. The hardest part of the day was to select the winning images, as three judges do not always agree with each other’s selection. But we were lucky in that we all came up with the same ones. This was certainly the case in the projected image section, when one selector chose their award image and then another selected theirs, then for the first selector to say they had been torn between the two accepted at that point. In addition, we tried to give awards to as many different fields in photography as possible.
Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee for their hospitality and for their hard work in making the selection days run smoothly. As far as we are concerned the hardest work was done by the members who submitted their work, to enable the Exhibition to take place.

Kevin and Margery have been on the photographic lecture circuit since 1994, visiting clubs from all over the British Isles. In October 2011 they extended their Canada photographic holiday in Alberta to do a couple of presentations in the Toronto area of Ontario.
Their website - www.kmimages.co.uk - was set up in May 2008.
In July 2011, Kevin published his first book ‘A Fellowship of Flowers’. His second book ‘Canadian Rockies’, was published in February 2012.
Although severely deaf, and had been from birth, Margery achieved GCE ‘A’ levels in Art Painting and Computer Science. She was then awarded a HND in Mathematics, Statistics and Computing, and embarked on a very enjoyable career as a PL/1 and COBOL commercial applications programmer, before taking early retirement as a business/systems analyst in 2009.
Margery’s first SLR was bought in 1975, as a tool for recording images that would then be used to make up the components for her paintings and drawings, generally of animals and birds in their natural settings. Over time, as her enjoyment of the differ-ent aspects of photography grew, photography became Margery’s main hobby, with natural history becoming her preferred subject.
Margery was awarded her ARPS in 1985, MPAGB in 2004 and EFIAP/bronze in 2009. She is cur-rently a member of three RPS specialist groups - Nature, Visual Art, and Archaeology & Heritage.
During the 1990’s Margery and Kevin were the Editors of the RPS Colour Group. Margery became the Treasurer of the RPS Nature Group in 2007. She has also been the Treasurer of their local photographic club ICON, since January 2000.
In July 2011, Margery published her first book ‘Photographic Art - East African Wildlife’. Her second book ‘In the Canadian Rockies’, was published in March 2012.

Most of Kevin’s working life had been as a mechanical engineer. For a long time, photographing landscapes and patterns were his preferred interest, but Kevin
now enjoys photograph-ing aircraft as well, and has been learning the craft of natural history over the last 10 years.
Kevin was awarded his FRPS in 2001, MPAGB in 2004, and EFIAP/bronze in 2007. He is currently a member of three RPS specialist groups - Nature, Audio Visual, and Creative.
Since 2002 it has been my privilege to be a member of one of the most friendly, supportive and inspirational clubs in the WPF. Shortly after joining, much to my surprise, I had a couple of rather speculative images accepted into the 2003 Welsh Salon. Since that time I have always considered the Welsh Salon as the major showcase of the WPF, and would never have imagined then that I would ever have been given the honour of an invitation to be a Salon selector.
In more recent years I have been delighted to visit various clubs in the WPF and offer my appraisal of their members’ images. I am constantly inspired by the skill, dedication and crea-tivity of the membership, and have nothing but admiration to those who give up their time voluntarily to raise the profile of their club, their photographic credentials and the status of the WPF in general. Perhaps one day when I am unburdened by the encumbrance of full-time employment I will be able to more fully aspire to their example!
I am sure that my friends at The Vale would describe my own style of photography as very varied in its content - I recall the words of Jacques-Henri Lartigue who, after taking his first photograph as a child, exclaimed: “It’s marvellous, marvellous! Nothing will ever be as much fun. I’m going to photo-graph everything, everything!” Thus I am intrigued by most aspects of photography and, although I have decided that extensive, creative, digital image manipulation is not a direction I wish to take with my own photographs, I have learned to appreciate the craft and I am frequently awed by the skills of those proficient in it. However, my main source of inspiration is from those photographers who are capable of producing stunning images by meticulous observation and documentation of the wonders to be found in the fleeting events of the world around them (an area perhaps sometimes under-appreciated within the genres of club photography?).
So congratulations to everyone who has had an acceptance this year. If not, be inspired: Don’t give up! Remember what Helmut Newton said: “The first 10,000 shots are the worst.”
