It!has!been!over!a!year!since!I!officially!took!the!reins!as!your!Director!

of!Volunteer!Services!so!this!gives!me!a!great!opportunity!to!look!back!

and!reflect!on!all!that!has!occurred.!!!!

First,!let!me!say!that!all!of!you!have!made!my!transition!into!this!role!

so!easy.!!Your!positive!attitude!and!willingness!to!go!the!extra!mile!

truly!inspires!me.!All!of!you!truly!embody!the!servant’s!heart!in!all!you!

do.!!

The!first!goal!I!had!when!I!took!this!role!was!to!look!at!our!processes!!

and!I!ask!“why?”!we!were!doing!it.!!My!predecessor!started!this!same!

process!and!I!was!happy!to!work!with!our!team!to!continue!this!same!

goal.!!!With!an!eye!toward!helping!you,!our!customers,!we!have!

worked!to!make!it!easier!to!recruit!new!volunteers!through!electronic!

applications.!!Additionally,!we!heard!that!coming!up!here!multiple!

times!to!handle!both!the!GAMES!and!TB!Tests!were!burdensome,!

especially!as!gas!prices!rose.!!For!that!reason,!we!tried!to!have!

someone!available!to!give!TB!Tests!at!the!GAMES!session.!!There!have!

been!other!changes!in!the!background,!but!our!goal!is!always!the!

same:!provide!the!best!experience!and!professional!environment!for!

all!our!volunteers.!!

Finally,!my!last!initiative!was!to!simply!say!thanks.!!I!try!to!say!it!to!

every!volunteer!that!I!pass!every!day.!!Without!you,!we!would!not!be!

the!outstanding!organization!we!are.!!It!is!something!small,!but!I!know!

it!means!a!lot!when!I!am!told!the!same!thing.!!Hopefully!you!hear!it!

ANGELS(IN(THE(MAKING(

The!ceramic!department!has!been!making!angels!for!volunteers!who!are!in!the!hospital!for!a!number!of!years.!When!

you!are!in!the!hospital!please!have!somebody!contact!the!volunteer!office.!!

The!ceramic!studio!is!located!in!Atherton!Place!and!is!open!on!Mondays!from!9:00!am!to!1:00!pm.!At!Atherton!Place!we!

are!a!service!group!that!holds!classes!for!the!residents!so!that!they!can!have!an!outlet!for!their!talents;!they!make!gifts!

for!their!family!members.!!We!try!to!keep!the!prices!fair!because!many!are!on!a!fixed!income.!!

This!past!year!we!have!had!two!sales!at!the!hospital!to!make!money!for!the!foundation.!!!!!

The!Ceramic!Department!has!been!in!existence!for!over!30!years.!Before!being!at!Atherton!Place,!it!was!located!in!the!

Volunteer!Office!in!the!hospital!as!a!fund!raising!group.!!

FLU(SHOT(REQUIREMENT(/(POLICY(!

Happy!Holidays!everyone!!As!we!move!into!this!season!of!friends,!family!and!celebration,!let!

me!also!emphasize!one!other!season!that!is!approaching…Flu!Season!!!

WellStar!has!believed!that!the!best!way!to!protect!against!the!flu!is!through!offering!the!flu!

vaccination!to!team!members!and!volunteers.!!

WellStar!has!had!a!policy!that!protects!our!patients!by!requiring!any!team!member!who!will!

come!in!contact!with!a!patient!to!have!had!the!flu!vaccination!or!wear!a!mask.!This!policy!

goes!into!effect!once!Employee!Health!is!notified!that!the!flu!is!at!a!level!to!warrant!this!

precaution!and!protect!our!patients.!!

New!this!year,!and!going!forward,!we!will!be!applying!this!same!policy!to!our!volunteers.!

Many!of!you!come!into!close!proximity!to!our!patients!and!we!want!to!be!sure!we!do!our!

part!to!protect!our!patients!who!may!already!have!compromised!immune!systems.!Once!

Employee!Health!notifies!us!of!this!flu!prevalence!requiring!the!policy!to!be!enacted,!we!will!

require!any!volunteer!who!has!not!received!their!flu!shot!to!wear!masks.!!

If!you!wish!to!get!the!flu!vaccination,!they!are!still!available!at!Employee!Health.!You!can!

schedule!an!appointment!at!Employee!Health!by!calling!770.793.7222!or!you!can!go!during!

walkZin!day!on!any!Tuesday.!The!flu!vaccinations!are!available!to!all!active!volunteers!at!no!

cost!to!you.!!

It’s(The(Holiday(Season…(! And!for!some!people!it’s!all!about!decorating!and!celebration!and!enhancing!any!room!with!a!beautiful!poinsettia!!Here!are!

some!interesting!facts!about!this!beauty!!!

The!poinsettia!(Euphorbia(pulcherrima)!is!a!culturally!and!commercially!important!plant!species!of!the!diverse!spurge!family!that!is!

indigenous!to!Mexico!and!Central!America.!It!is!particularly!well!known!for!its!red!and!green!foliage!and!is!widely!used!in!Christmas!

floral!displays.!It!derives!its!common!English!name!from!Joel!Roberts!Poinsett,!the!first!United!States!Minister!to!Mexico,!who!

introduced!the!plant!into!the!United!States!in!1825.!

!The!poinsettia's!main!attraction!is!not!its!flowers,!but!its!leaves?!The!flowers!of!the!plant!are!the!

yellow!clustered!buds!in!the!center.!The!colored!leafy!parts!are!actually!bracts!or!modified!leaves.!

Red!is!the!most!popular!color,!accounting!for!roughly!threeZquarters!of!all!sales!nationwide,!followed!

It’s(The(Holiday(Season((continued)…(Although!every!state!in!the!United!States!grows!poinsettias!commercially,!California!is!the!top!producer!with!about!27!million!pots!

grown,!followed!by!Texas,!North!Carolina,!Ohio,!and!Michigan,!each!with!about!14!million!pots.!!

Did!you!know!that!in!the!wild,!the!poinsettia!could!reach!heights!of!12!feet!with!leaves!measuring!six!to!eight!inches!across?!It!is!

actually!a!small!tropical!tree!belonging!to!the!Euphorbia!plant!family.!Its!botanical!name!is!Euphorbia!pulcherrima!although!in!

EnglishZspeaking!countries!it!is!more!commonly!known!as!the!poinsettia.!A!native!of!southern!Mexico,!the!poinsettia!blooms!in!

December!and!has!been!used!in!that!country!to!decorate!churches!for!centuries.!!

In!the!fourteenth!to!sixteenth!centuries,!the!Aztecs!used!the!poinsettia!leaves!to!dye!fabric!for!clothing!and!the!sap!for!medicinal!

purposes,!including!helping!control!fevers.!They!also!considered!the!red!color!a!symbol!of!purity,!and!so!poinsettias!were!

traditionally!part!of!religious!ceremonies.!!

You!probably!know!that!Dr.!Joel!Roberts!Poinsett,!an!amateur!botanist!and!first!United!States!ambassador!to!Mexico,!introduced!

cleared!of!this!charge!by!the!National!Poison!Center!in!Atlanta,!Georgia,!and!the!American!Medical!Association.!The!POINSINDEX!

Information!Service,!the!main!information!resource!for!poison!control!centers!across!the!country,!reports!that!even!if!a!50Zpound!

child!consumed!more!than!500!poinsettia!bractsZZthe!amount!tested!in!scientific!experimentsZZthe!consequences!would!not!be!

Do!you!know!the!best!way!to!prolong!the!life!of!this!Christmas!plant?!Avoid!hot!or!cold!drafts,!keep!the!soil!moist!not!soggy,!and!

place!in!a!room!with!sufficient!natural!light!and!temperatures!of!around!60!to!70!degrees!F.!Water!when!the!soil!begins!to!dry.!

Once!the!leaves!begin!to!wilt,!it's!too!late.!!

Above!all,!protect!it!from!exposure!to!wind!or!cold!on!the!way!home!from!the!store. Poinsettias!are!highly!sensitive!to!cold!temperatures!and!even!a!few!minutes!of!exposure!to!50Zdegree!F!or!lower!temperatures!will!cause!them!to!wilt.!But!when!cared!

Fall!Membership!Meeting!&!Luncheon!!

On!Thursday,!November!8,!2012!our!Fall!Membership!Meeting!was!held!at!Marietta!Country!Club.!

Our!President,!Brenda!Castile,!welcomed!the!140!volunteers!in!attendance.!Scott!Burfitt,!Director!of!Volunteer!

Services!expressed!appreciation!for!all!the!work!our!volunteers!do.!!He!also!gave!an!example!of!a!hospital!

patient!returning!to!volunteer!with!us!as!a!direct!result!of!the!excellent!care!she!received!here.!!

Renee!Owen,!Director!of!Pastoral!Care,!offered!a!blessing!before!lunch!was!served.!!

Candice!Saunders,!WellStar!Executive!Vice!President!and!WellStar!Kennestone!Hospital!President,!spoke!after!

lunch!to!update!our!members!on!several!issues.!The!upcoming!move!into!the!new!Blue!Tower!West!in!midZ

January!will!involve!extensive!planning!and!coordination.!We!will!need!to!add!more!volunteers!to!handle!the!

additional!areas.!This!project!completes!the!current!fiveZyear!Master!Plan,!and!discussions!will!begin!in!

December!on!the!next!fiveZyear!Master!Plan.!!!!

Pete!Zamaria,!WellStar!Kennestone!Hospital!Security!Manager,!was!our!keynote!speaker.!Pete!has!23!years!

experience!at!Kennestone!and!now!oversees!130!security!officers,!with!a!minimum!of!five!officers!on!duty!at!all!

times.!He!gave!us!some!interesting!statistics!that!help!illustrate!the!scope!of!their!work:!There!are!over!6,000!

alarms!on!the!campus.!The!Communication!Center!received!approximately!95,000!calls!in!2011.!Security!

received!11,000!calls.!Also!in!2011,!there!were!over!3,500!visitor!or!patient!control!incidents.!

!

The!Security!staff!handles!all!types!of!situations!and!is!involved!with!all!departments!in!the!hospital.!We!enjoyed!

learning!more!about!this!very!important!function.!!

The!meeting!closed!with!the!traditional!giveaway!of!the!muchZcoveted!centerpieces!designed!by!the!Volunteer!

Your!board!members!met!in!Augusta!on!October!21st!in!the!afternoon.!After!checking!in!and!registering!we!met!

for!a!social!hour!before!heading!out!for!Dinner!that!turned!out!to!be!a!night!that!we!will!never!forget.!

Reservations?!Yes,!we!made!them!(3!times!confirmed)!and!nope!we!don’t!have!them!!From!the!Best!of!Augusta!

2012,!the!restaurant!was!quoted!as!follows!“Skip!the!fattening!meals!and!just!have!the!dessert.”!Should!have!

just!said,!“Skip!the!meals!”!I!think!we!may!skip!this!little!place!next!time!around!!!

After!a!lite!lunch!and!remarks!(may!or!may!not!have!been!politically!correct)!by!the!Honorable!Ralph!Hudgen,!

Georgia!Insurance!Commissioner,!we!had!the!choice!of!three!workshops;!Customer!Service,!Youth!Volunteers,!

and!Dealing!with!Bereavement.!I!chose!Bereavement!where!the!speaker!spoke!from!her!heart!about!what!to!say!

and!when!not!to!speak.!She!had!lost!four!members!of!her!family!in!a!span!of!four!years.!It!was!a!great!and!

riveting!thirty!minutes.!!

The!remainder!of!the!day!was!spent!browsing!at!the!vendor!exhibits.!The!dinner!that!night!was!a!good!meal.!The!

guest!speaker!for!the!evening!was!the!author!of!“How!to!be!a!Sexy!Senior.”!Her!philosophy!on!life!and!her!

survivor!outlook!was!inspiring!in!many!ways,!though!the!speaker!was!not!everyone’s!cup!of!tea.!One!of!her!

remarks!was!about!dealing!with!the!day….!you!get!up,!you!get!bathed!or!showered,!you!put!on!your!makeup!

and!lip!gloss,!you!put!on!you!best!(or!favorite)!dress!and!your!spike!high!heeled!shoes.!When!your!husband!asks!

you!“Where!are!your!going?”!She!says,!“To!make!breakfast!”!!

Tuesday!started!off!with!breakfast,!then!a!General!Session!that!ended!with!a!short!talk!by!Earl!Rogers,!Senior!VP,!

GHA!(Georgia!Hospital!Association).!After!lunch!it!was!time!for!more!workshops,!Making!Newsletters!Great,!

Cancer!Resources,!and!Leadership!and!Management.!I!chose!Making!Newsletters!Great!and!Cancer!Resources.!

The!American!Cancer!Society!put!on!Cancer!Resources.!The!presenter!spoke!on!all!that!ACS!had!to!offer!for!

those!that!have!cancer.!This,!to!me,!was!the!best!of!the!three!workshops!that!I!went!to.!!

Making!Newsletter!Great!was!fair!but!we!got!more!out!of!the!remarks!and!comments!from!those!in!the!

audience.!I!will!say!this!our!newsletter!shines!!!

After!dinner!we!were!off!to!our!rooms.!Wednesday!morning!was!breakfast,!door!prizes,!and!then!driving!back!to!

Marietta.!But!wait!!!We!just!had!to!stop!at!the!Blue!Willow!for!lunch.!I!left!with!a!heavy!belly!full!of!good!
