Dear Weinberg Families and Residents,

Welcome to our Summer Edition! We hope that your summer

is going well so far, and that we can all enjoy good weather for

its remainder!

We hosted a wonderful Memorial Day Celebration with a few

hundred guests in attendance, including lots of grandkids who

delighted in the balloon artist. Families and residents alike en-

joyed the delicious food selections and great music.

Our remodeling project is well underway, and we anticipate

that it will be complete by the end of August. Our café is al-

ready in the process of being renovated. The Friend Center wallpaper has been removed,

and new paint and carpeting is on its way! Thank you for your patience during this transi-

tion. We look forward to the opportunity for all of you and your family members to enjoy

the beautifully remodeled spaces later this summer!

We have distributed our annual customer satisfaction surveys this week for both residents

at Friend Center and Gidwitz Place. Residents at Gidwitz have until July 7th to return their

surveys, and families are more than welcome to help complete them. The Friend Center

surveys are mailed out to family members, and we request their return also by July 7th.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated so that we can continue to better serve our residents!

Our annual unannounced Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) survey was held on

June 17th and I am happy to report that there were no resident related findings!

Keep an eye out for any of our emails and flyers about our upcoming events. Also, a re-

minder about our resident referral program: If any resident or family member refers a resi-

dent to either Gidwitz or Friend Center, and the person signs a 1 year lease, the person

who made the referral will receive a check for $750.00. Our best referrals come from you,

so please think of us!

Feel free to call me with any suggestions at any time.

Jennifer Weininger, Executive Director Of Weinberg Community for Senior Living 847.236.7856

mation, and it will be sent to pertinent staff.

If you have a private caregiver working for you, please make sure we are aware of this.

If your family member is in the hospital and will be going to a rehab facility, please advise

us, to guarantee continuity of care.

If you bring your pet to our building, please make sure that he/she is on a leash at all times.

Ruth Berman

Ruth and Leo Berman came to Gidwitz seven

years ago, moving from the Bronx, NY. Ruth lost

her beloved Leo a year and a half after moving

here. They were married 69 years.

Ruth and Leo met at age 15 in junior high school,

and married at age 22. Leo served in the U.S.

Navy during WWII on a troop and supply ship. Af-

ter the war, they opened LEO’S TOYS in the

Bronx, selling toys to the neighborhood children,

as well as others, especially with lots of business

around the holidays. The store also sold greeting cards. Ruth remembers how

some of the male customers purchased two Valentine cards and two boxes of

candy, “One for the wife and one for the girlfriend!” she confides. Ruth’s mother

would sometimes help out at the store.

Ruth has two sons—Marc a Chicago resident and CJE Board member, and

Sam (named after Ruth’s father) who lives in Carmel, NY. She has four grand-

children and one great grandchild—June who was born last September. Ruth’s

parents came from Poland, moved to Paris, and then to the U.S.A. Her father

was a tailor. In fact, a photo hangs in the hallway with his three daughters

dressed in party dresses that he made. He also made their wedding gowns.

There is a wonderful picture of Ruth and Leo in front of the toy store as well.

Ruth has a close group of friends. They all take meals together and spend the

early evening visiting in the Lobby or outdoors on the Patio. Ruth attends the

Women’s Group, the Monday AM Art Class, plays Mah Jong and is an avid

reader. She recently completed reading the 750-page novel The Golden Finch.

Ruth is always listening to what’s going on here and a wonderful member of our

Weinberg family.

Elaine Brody

Every resident of Weinberg Community and their

families have met with Elaine Brody upon coming to

Weinberg, but she does so much more than getting

leases signed. She is often the first person to speak

with prospective residents, getting information from

them and providing the information to ensure that

Weinberg is the right community to meet the needs

of each individual. Elaine provides tours to those in-

terested in our assisted living, explaining in detail

the services and activities offered and introducing

them to residents and staff and all those who are

part of the Weinberg family.

Elaine has literally been here since day one of our

existence, and even before—initially meeting with prospects at the Bernard Horwich

J.C.C. before Weinberg was even built, and then at Weinberg during its construction—

hard hats and all! Prior to serving as our Leasing Agent, she was a realtor in the North

and Northwest suburbs. In her “first career,” she was as an early education professional

at Brentano School in Logan Square. She retired from teaching to raise her family, a

son and two daughters. Married for 45 years, she and her husband have nine grand-

children—five boys and four girls, ranging in age from four to 13 years. Their families all

live in the metropolitan Chicago area and are frequently together, celebrating birthdays

and attending sport’s activities, plays and dance recitals.

In Elaine’s non-working hours she enjoys reading, Monday night Mah Jong, going out

to eat at restaurants, enjoying family and friends and travel. A real globe-trotter, Elaine

has traveled to England, France, Italy, Eastern Europe, Greece, Israel, Ireland, Scot-

land and the Caribbean. But even on vacation Elaine is not far from Weinberg, often

checking in electronically. That’s because she is devoted to Weinberg Community resi-

dents. She is so and interested in continuing relationships throughout each resident’s

time with us, and we are very fortunate to have Elaine as part of our Weinberg family.
