    Discussion of book exercises

Topic – Creative Writing : Paragraph

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES

To enable the students to: (Based on Bloom’s taxonomy)

brainstorm a topic of choice to generate ideas for a paragraph. (remembering)

compose a topic sentence or claim for a paragraph. (creating)

use a graphic organizer for “claim, support, elaboration” for organizing ideas. (applying)

post examples of different aspects of paragraph in discussion forum for feedback from

    peers. (understanding)

provide peer feedback on posted examples in discussion forum. (evaluating)

    What is a Paragraph?

A Paragraph is a group of sentences that share a common idea. It is written about a certain

topic, just like friends usually share a common interest.

Paragraphs often include examples or evidence to support a topic, idea, or opinion. It's kind

of like when you want your parents to buy you a certain toy, so you list several reasons why

    they should buy it.

    Paragraph organizer

    Topic sentence

A topic sentence gives a general overview of what the paragraph will cover, and it's usually

placed at the start of the paragraph. It introduces an idea, topic, or opinion that will be

explained throughout the rest of the paragraph.

What is a Body of a Paragraph?

The body of the paragraph is the main part of the paragraph. It tells readers what the

paragraph is about, supporting sentences discuss the idea or ideas in the topic sentence,

using examples and/or evidence to support that discussion.

    • Conclusion

A conclusion is the very end of a piece of writing, and it usually summarizes the main points

of an argument or demonstrates an opinion about a topic.

    Sample

Write a paragraph on the topic ‘Ways of Protecting our Environment’ in about 100 - 120

    words.

An environment is the natural surrounding which helps life to grow and nourish on our planet

naturally. But due to some bad and selfish activities of human beings, our environment is getting

affected. It is very important for all of us to know how to protect our environment to keep it safe

forever and to ensure the nature‟s balance to continue the existence of life. We can save it by

following three Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We should reduce the amount of waste, reuse

things in new ways and recycle much of our waste. Some other things to do so are rain water

conservation, no use of polybags, reduce water wastage and energy conservation. We should

value our natural resources and use them by staying under natural discipline.

    4. Long Answer Questions:

    (a) What are grasslands? Where are the Prairies located?

Ans. Vast areas covered with grasses are called grasslands. They have few bushes and

scattered trees. Grasslands generally get a moderate rainfall which supports the growth of

grasses. Most of the grasslands of the world are found in both parts of the Temperate Zone.

    (b) Discuss agriculture in the Prairies.

Ans. Agriculture is an important activity in the fertile Prairies. Most of the farms are quite

large, spreading over many acres. Farmers use scientific methods for cultivation and grow

large quantities of crops. The main crops grown are corn in the eastern part and wheat in the

central part. Wheat is grown in large quantities in the Prairies which is enough to feed the

entire country. Due to this the Prairies are known as the 'wheat basket of the world'.

    5. Beyond the text (HOTS Question):

    (a) Why do you think farmers on the Prairies used machine to do most of the work?
