A Memorial DestinationSo, where to go and what to do on our first

3-day weekend of the year? Memorial Day ismeant to be a day of remembering the menand women who died while serving in theUnited States Armed Forces. Formerly knownas Decoration Day, it originated after theAmerican Civil War to commemorate the Unionand Confederate soldiers who died in the CivilWar. Now it has been extended to honor allAmericans who have died while in the militaryservice.

It also typically marks the start of the summervacation season while Labor Day marks its end.

Many visit cemeteries and memorials, particularlyto honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on eachgrave in national cemeteries. Today it is an occasionfor more general expressions of memory, as peoplevisit the graves of any deceased relatives or lovedones. It is also a long weekend increasingly devotedto shopping, family gatherings, fireworks, trips to thebeach, and national media events.

Whether it’s a camping trip, a family gathering inthe back yard or an extended overnight travelexcursion, The Weekender Magazine again offers awide offering of ideas for places to go, things to doand people to see. This is a perfect time toannounce our next Face- book weekend giveaway. You are invited to share your Memorial Day activi-ties with us by “liking” our page, then posting a pic-ture accompanied by a brief destination or eventdescription.
