Rags to riches?

Road trip romp

BAKED to a similar recipeas American Pie, SexDrive is a filthy-minded,teen comedy about a pairof best friends and theirunexpected romanticdetours during a road tripin search of physical satis-faction.

One half of the centraldouble-act is a reluctantvirgin determined to pophis cherry before startingcollege, the other half acarefree purveyor of chat-up lines, who is so laid

back, he is positively hori-zontal.Sex Drive is a lively jauntthrough the back roads ofthe Midwest, creatingnumerous scrapes for thethree youngsters as theychart a haphazard course toadulthood.Gags hit as frequently asthey miss and despite Ian’spursuit of thrills, the filmultimately hammers homea message about meaning-ful relationships to the tar-get teen audience.

ROLE MODELS (15)

Rating: 7/10

Weddingdaybattleground

BRIDE Wars is strictly a chick flick, unlessthe thought of Kate Hudson and AnneHathaway fighting in the aisle appeals.

Even then, women could well be affrontedby the rather stereotyped versions of brides-to-be presented to them.

Bride Wars is based on the premise thatevery young girl holds dear an image of herdream wedding, which in the case of ‘bestfriends forever’ Liv (Hudson, who also pro-duces) and Emma (Hathaway) is in NewYork’s Plaza Hotel in June.

But when an administrative error by theirwedding planner means they have to getmarried on the same day, the pair fall out inspectacular style and try to sabotage theother’s special day.

A tale of wartime courage

THE latest foul-mouthed bro-man-tic comedy cast in the JuddApatow mould (Superbad, StepBrothers, Pineapple Express) is agenuinely funny escapade thatmilks every guffaw from its pre-dictable fish-out-of-water scenario.

Role Models doesn’t deviate oncefrom a well-trodden path of breastgags, wanton stupidity and hardfought redemption but DavidWain’s film has an undeniablecharm and some terrific one-linersas it extols the virtues of fraternallove. The lively patter between

lead stars Paul Rudd, who co-wrote the script, and SeannWilliam Scott, as a pair of puerile30-something degenerates forcedto think like adults for once, winsus over.

Inevitably, by becoming mentorsto two troubled youths, these menbehaving badly grow up and final-ly lead by example, proving thatresponsible adults aren’t afraid todon copious face make-up andtights in public.

A guilty pleasure with plenty tosnigger at.

REFUGEE HERO: Daniel Craigas Tuvia Bielski

DURING the Holocaust, the fabric ofsociety was torn almost beyond repair asentire nations bore witness, sometimessilently, to Hitler’s extermination of theJews.Yet in the midst of shocking violence, there were beacons of hope to teach us les-sons about mankind’s courage, strengthand resilience.Based on the book Defiance: The BielskiPartisans by Nechama Tec, EdwardZwick’s historical drama relates a tale ofheroism and sacrifice during the years ofconflict in Europe.Unfortunately, awe and wonder about theincredible facts underpinning Zwick’s film

gradually wane as the script, co-writtenwith Clayton Frohman, distills facts at apedestrian pace through competent actionsequences and lacklustre verbal exchanges.

As Hitler’s army marches throughBelarussia, three Jewish brothers escapethe onslaught to lead hundreds of survivorsinto the dense forests.

While Tuvia Bielski (Daniel Craig) and hisgentle, youngest sibling Asael (Jamie Bell)establish an ever-expanding communitybeneath the tree canopy, fiery-tempered

middle son Zus (Liev Schreiber) refuses tostand by as his people are wiped out.

He abandons the refuge with men in towand aligns himself with Viktor Panchenko(Ravil Isyanov), charismatic commanderof a group determined to strike at the heartof the Nazi machine.

In Zus’s absence, Tuvia struggles to main-tain control of the rapidly swelling numberof refugees, constantly meeting resistancefrom rival, Peretz Shorshaty (MartinHancock) and his acolytes.

Thankfully, the beautiful Lilka (AlexaDavalos) and young Asael help to keepTuvia grounded.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE(15)

Rating: 10/10

MODERN FAIRYTALE: Dev Patel as Jamal and Anil Kapoor as Prem Kumar in Slumdog Millionaire

More than 25 years after Gandhiswept all before it at the AcademyAwards, another British film

embedded in Indian culture is poised to con-quer the world.Scripted by Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty),Slumdog Millionaire is an utterly irresistiblerites of passage drama that builds to an extraor-dinary emotional crescendo.Employing a simple flashback structure,Danny Boyle’s modern day fairytale charts theextraordinary journey of an orphan from theslums of Mumbai to the contestant’s chair onhis country’s version of Who Wants To Be AMillionaire? The suspense within the television studio, where host Prem (Anil Kapoor) poses eachmultiple-choice question, is nothing comparedto the tensions within Beaufoy’s multi-layeredscreenplay.In the space of a single vignette, the film glidesfrom sidesplitting comedy to gut-wrenchingdespair, with an honesty and subtlety that con-tinually catches us off guard. Indeed, there is asmuch darkness as light here, including scenesof torture, child abuse, exploitation and degra-dation that reflect the meagre lot of children

born into a rat run of makeshift housing, detri-tus, dirty water and shattered dreams.

Slumdog Millionaire may just be the best filmyou see all year.

Eighteen-year-old Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) hasbeen raised by older brother Salim (MadhurMittal) since the boys lost their mother to theviolence of a religious uprising.

The youngsters use guile to survive on thestreets, encountering a pretty orphan girl calledLatika (Freida Pinto) who will change theirlives forever. As months and years pass, Salim

becomes a lackey to a brutal gang lord whoforcibly takes Latika as his wife, beating herwhen she dares to challenge him.

Unable to rescue the woman he loves from herpredicament, Jamal seizes the opportunity toappear on a television quiz show.

Miraculously, Jamal knows the answer to eachquestion and as he edges closer and closer tothe 20 million rupee final question, the youngman stands on the precipice of a momentousleap of faith that could rescue Latika and final-ly drag him and Salim out of the gutter.
