A Healthy Eldership: Waypoint can help point the way

EASTER SUNDAY BAPTISM AND ATTENDANCE NumberS INSIDE

Waypoint exists to help churches and leaders navigate uncharted ministry waters. Much of our time and energy is spent with ministers. We also advise and equip elders to chart the course and navigate through ministry challenges.

Here is a quick list of some of the services we provide to elders:

Elder Meeting CoachingWaypoint staff can visit your elders’ meetings to give feedback and advice for creating a more effective leadership environment.

Elder Retreats Waypoint staff can help you plan and deliver a great Elders’ Retreat designed to help your church elders

focus and stay on track for the important mission entrusted to them.

Hiring Service Waypoint staff can coach elders faced with the task of creating a comprehensive process for hiring a new senior minister or associate staff.

Strategic ConsultationsWaypoint staff often advise elders about specific topics to provide broader perspective and wisdom. Recent consultations have included same-sex/transgender issues, bylaws revisions, long-range planning, incorporation & 501(c)(3) filing, merger discussions, and more.

At ICOM 2015 in Richmond, Virginia, Waypoint Church Partners announced its goal to plant seven churches on six continents by partnering with various missions organizations and raising the funds through local churches. One of the missions organizations selected was Central Brazil Mission, a ministry that reaches out to villages and individuals who are accessible only by the Amazon River via a fully equipped medical boat.

This boat, the C.B.M. Amazonia, is completely furnished with physician and dentist offices as well as emergency room treatment areas. It has a well-supplied drug store for distribution of medicines which are provided by U.S. churches and individuals. The boat is staffed by eight crew members, two missionary families, and two single women who reach out to the indigenous people.

Central Brazil Mission travels to new villages often and then continues to serve those communities by returning at least twice a year. They provide the village residents basic health care, teach them about Christ, and then plant churches in their village.

It was through the medical boat that Waypoint’s supporting churches reached, helped and built a church in the Monte Oliveira village. A few years ago, the Monte Oliveira village wanted nothing to do with C.B.M. or the boat. But after learning that several people from surrounding villages had been treated at the floating medical offices, they asked C.B.M. not only to come to their village to treat their people, but also to build a church there.

Their greatest current need is that God would raise up native missionaries from the villages to reach more people groups, as there are currently more villages wanting churches than the number of missionaries who can help them.

There is more to this story! To learn more about the church C.B.M. is starting in Monte Oliveira and the other churches starting alongside the International Conference on Missions in Richmond, e-mail [email protected] to be added to the ICOM church plant update e-mail list.

This Easter, your partnership enabled a record 14,226 people to walk through the doors of the Waypoint church plants. Forty-six of them made a decision that would change their lives forever: they were baptized into the name of Jesus Christ. They were given eternal life, a second chance, hope, and a future. Praise God! Join us in encouraging our new brothers and sisters in Christ by taking 30 seconds to pray for them right now! Your support of church planting is changing lives.

On Sunday, May 1, Belmont Christian Church held their first services in their new facility, which includes a 500-seat auditorium. More than 950 were there to worship at their inaugural services.

The new property sits on 90 acres just across the road from the church’s previous site. Their former facility had served the congregation since 1972 but it had become too small to accommodate their three Sunday services.

Hometown boy James “Beaver” Terry has been the senior minister at Belmont since 2010 following the retirement of Jim Bayne, who served as Belmont’s senior minister for more than 28 years.

Belmont was a longtime supporter of the VEF and now serves as one of the leading partners with Waypoint.

Fairmount Christian Church in Mechanicsville, VA recently hired Kevin Tucker to lead a new service which will update their current contemporary Sunday services. A 2015 Johnson University grad, Kevin served at Kingsway Christian Church in Indianapolis prior to coming to the Richmond area.

Kevin is the son of Paul Tucker, the former worship minister at Northside Christian Church in Yorktown, VA and the Kempsville Christian Church in Virginia Beach, VA.

Fairmount began their contemporary services in 2003 in their Family Life Center. They average 700 in those services each Sunday. The new service features music and video designed to help a younger audience experience authentic worship. Fairmount also features two traditional services each Sunday in their sanctuary. A longtime supporter of the VEF, the Fairmount Church is now a leading partner with Waypoint.

When is the last time your church overhauled a worship service to reach the next generation for Christ?

Fairmount hires new associate worship minister, Kevin Tucker When New Life Christian Church in Chantilly, VA added an “online” campus to

their two physical locations two years ago, they could not have predicted the reach it has today: the campus draws more than 150 participants who log-in and interact remotely with one of their three Sunday services.

A staff member, Tom Pounder, has been challenged to virtually pastor this digital ‘flock.’ He provides pastoral care for needs discovered through online interactions and connects people to small groups and church-wide events.

Along with those who connect to New Life exclusively through this medium, other church members are now able to log into to a church service while out of town or when their work schedule requires them to be gone on a Sunday morning.

For more information, contact Tom Pounder at [email protected] or check out the page on their website dedicated to this campus:

Waypoint partnered with The Point Church in Raleigh, NC to plant its sixth campus on March 20th. 380 were in attendance on opening day in their 6,000-square-foot leased facility which they renovated prior to launch. The campus is now averaging well over 225 each week.

We’re proud to announce the North Campus has already celebrated five baptisms, including three on Easter Sunday.

The leaders at The Point have an ambitious vision to see 30 new congregations and campuses launched around the Raleigh metro area over the next 15 years. Waypoint hopes to partner with them for many of these projects.

What God-sized vision is your church actively engaged in right now?

Jerry Simpkins was hired by the Jefferson Church in Christ in 1980, when Jimmy Carter was president. When Jerry arrived, the church was averaging 140. This year, the church averages over 700 each Sunday on three campuses including a Hispanic location.

The elders at Jefferson Church have announced that Steve Cook will assume the lead minister position effective October 10th. A 1980 graduate of Johnson University, Steve has been on staff at Jefferson for 29 years, serving most recently as their Minister of Worship and Administration.

Jerry Simpkins has served on the Board of Directors for both Envision and the VEF, the two organizations which now make up Waypoint Church Partners. Prior to coming to Jefferson, Jerry held ministries in Louisa, VA and Jasper, GA.

Jefferson is a leading example of an established church catching the vision for church planting. The church has been directly involved in five church plants in the past ten years. Congrats to Jerry for a job well done!

The Point Church in Raleigh merged with an older congregation in December and relaunched the church as a campus on March 20th. The new location is now averaging 350 each Sunday.

Brandon Westmoreland was hired to lead the project. He and his wife Kamella, a nurse, will move to North Carolina along with their three boys on May 29. Brandon served as the Children’s Pastor at Crossroads Christian Church in Joliet, Illinois. Crossroads is an eight-year-old church plant that has rapidly grown to over 800.

Brandon was one of five church planting residents with the training cohort of Passion for Plant-ing, a national ministry of New Life Christian Church, a Waypoint church plant. This ten-month distance residency of Passion for Planting prepares emerging leaders with a comprehensive training environment for launching a new church.

— Hebrews 13:2, NIV

In 2015, Waypoint challenged local churches to raise funds to plant seven churches on six continents. These efforts encouraged the ICOM 2016 President, Mike Schrage, to start an initiative of his own: The RISE Project.

The Refugee and International Student Engagement (RISE) Project calls on the Church to mobilize and seize the unique opportunities we have in our own country. We can make a difference without acquiring a passport or learning a new language! Our ability to go to the ends of the earth has never been easier.

The RISE Project includes a small group video series to encourage viewers to better understand and get involved with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. We have an unprecedented opportunity to display the heart of Jesus by welcoming and serving those who are far away from loved ones and looking for ways to belong in their new home, whether temporary or permanent.

The goal of The RISE Project is to raise $250,000 to distribute through grants to churches and ministries who are willing to reach out and welcome those who have arrived as refugees or international students. As expert practitioners inform and train us, we hope to start a new conversation about these open doors and to rise up and embrace this sacred opportunity to represent the loving heart of Jesus to those who have come so far.

When is the last time you stopped to pray earnestly for the elders of your church? According to the Hebrew writer, they will one day have to “give an account” of how they led the Lord’s church under their care. It’s a sobering thought to have to stand before Christ and justify your actions.

Elders are just men, often from different walks of life, different generations, and at different stages of maturity in their faith. They’re human, prone to sin and imperfection. They don’t always make the right decisions.  They make mistakes. But most have the best interest of the flock in their hearts and minds.

When is the last time you intentionally, earnestly prayed for the elders of your church? They need it! Here are four specific areas you can pray

for concerning the elders of your church:

Wisdom: Discerning the needs of the people, settling disputes among the church family, and overseeing the proper stewardship of giving all

require much wisdom.  Elders often feel, as even Solomon did, under-qualified to

lead the people of God.

Pray that God would grant the elders of your church the spiritual insight they need to fulfill their duties.

Vision: A good shepherd knows where to lead his flock and is always on the lookout for danger.  The elders of your church have been commissioned not to maintain the church but to grow it. They are looking for new ways to invest in the spiritual well-being of its people and to impact the community at large.

Pray that your elders will be given a vision for the future of the church that is in line with God’s vision and that they will hear the voice of the Great Shepherd leading them as they lead others.

Stamina: The elders of your church were selected because they manage their own households well. Elders are usually men with time and experience in leadership or management roles.

Leadership takes a toll. An elder gets tired in his body and in his spirit. He desperately needs the strength that God provides to adequately fulfill his ministry. Pray for health, endurance, vigor and grit for your elders. They need it!

Unity: One committee meeting can demonstrate how easily Christians disagree and get sideways with each other.  Satan loves disunity and disharmony in the church. Just look how many different churches there are!

Elders must strive to maintain unity within their own group and in the church to be effective shepherds. It is important for you to pray that the elders have unity among them and an ability to foster unity in the church.

So please... pray for your elders. It will bless you as much as them.

Check out this conference for Elders & Staff being hosted by Waypoint this Fall:

“Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you. Pray for us . . .”

— Hebrews 13:2, NIV

THE WAYPOINT

ENDEA ORA NOTE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORMy dad was an elder. He was also a career military man in the Air Force, so we got to experience a different church family every two or three years. Some churches were fairly large, some not so much. Some churches were fairly healthy, many were not.

As the son of an elder, I witnessed firsthand elders driving the mission and evangelistic culture of a church. I also saw groups of elders that were at best hurdles to accomplishing the mission, or, even worse, a roadblock for evangelism and a healthy culture within the Body.

I saw great elders who were the preacher’s biggest advocate and best friend, like my dad. I also saw elders who seemed to almost enjoy being the “thorn” in the preacher’s side through criticism, conflict, or passive-aggressive actions.
