New Year, New People,

Same Wonderful Church So we have started the new calendar year. (It has been the new Church year

for months now.) New things are beginning and continuing things are, for lack of a

better word, continuing. Our renewed Outreach initiative has begun well with a

very successful Christmas party for Washington County foster families. By the time

this comes out, the Bazaar Steering Committee will have met and proposed

disbursements from the Bazaar for the vestry to approve. The first weekend in

February is our diocesan annual council; council is meeting in Jackson this year.

And plans are underway for our Lenten series. Harvest, scouts, and other groups

that meet regularly here at St. James' are in full swing, so it is an active place.

Perhaps the newest thing going on is “breaking in” our new organist,

Andrew Smith. Andrew lives here in Greenville, and he has played for a couple of

local churches. I am very pleased to welcome him to the St. James' family. If you

have been to the last few 10:30 services, you already know about what Andrew

brings to our worship services. Choir practice is up and running (Wednesdays at

6:00), and if Andrew hasn't asked you to be in the choir yet, he will. Of course, you

could save him the time by volunteering. If anyone has any interest in being part of

the choir, come to a rehearsal. Current choir members will tell you, it doesn't take

extraordinary talent to be in the choir, just a willingness to be a part.

I am very pleased that the St. James' family has seemed to have weathered

the divisiveness that has been part of our national life recently. The Church of

England – and by extension, the Episcopal Church – was founded upon the principle

that good, Christian, sincere folks could have serious disagreements about things

and still come together to worship God as one body. Our liturgy is ambiguous. This

is a feature, not a flaw. We purposely choose words in our corporate worship than

can be understood in a variety of ways to allow folks with different ideas to worship

together with complete integrity. We strive to have a service where sincere

Christian folks can worship together and never have to “cross their fingers behind

their backs.” We can say the words and mean them, even if we understand them in

different ways.

Unfortunately, we can't script public discourse outside of our services.

People are free to say whatever they like, more or less. But as we spout off about

various topics, it is important that we keep some things in mind. When we make

broad, general statements about one group or another, we inevitably include

members of our family here at St. James'. Our members cover a wide variety of

beliefs. I do not think that any of those beliefs is arrived at haphazardly or

arbitrarily. At least, that should be our default approach. It is very easy to think

along the lines of “Well, I believe thus and so, so any (continued on page 2)

Page 2: The Wayfarerstjamesgreenville.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/2017... · 2017. 1. 26. · (continued from page 1) right-thinking person would agree; therefore, anyone who disagrees

(continued from page 1) right-thinking person would agree;

therefore, anyone who disagrees with me must not be a

right-thinking person.” Such is not the case.

Humility is an important Christian trait, the idea

that we have been, and will be again, wrong. We are

not perfect. We all have fallen short, not only of the

glory of God, as St. Paul would teach us, but also in our

own thought processes and opinions. I do not agree

with the idea that all opinions are equally valid. An

informed, reasoned, thought-out opinion is of more

value than ideas parroted from a bumper sticker. That is

why we ask advice from others. That is why we reason

with one another. That is why we need humility.

Because we have a diversity of beliefs here at

St. James', another important aspect of our living

peacefully together is not to assume that everyone

agrees with you. When one makes a comment or posts a

meme on Facebook, shares a joke in a group, or any of

the other ways we communicate with each other, realize

that things we say can be harmful to some. “First do no

harm” is as equally valid for the Christian community

as for the medical one. If it does not build up, do not

say it. “I was only joking” does not soothe the hurt

feelings that you caused, so let us strive to avoid the

possibility at all.

As I said, I have not seen too much in the way

of rancor among our people here at St. James'. I just

want to make sure it stays that way. St. James' will be a

place where it is safe to express your thoughts, feelings,

and opinions as long as we each strive “to respect the

dignity of every human being.” (BCP 305) One’s

thoughts do not have to be unspoken, but they must

only be spoken in love, to build up and not to tear

down.

Peace,

Fr. Brandt+

Foster Care Outreach News In January, the DHS foster care Christmas party

committee members met to discuss the pros and cons of

the planning and implementation of the party. The

financial statement was also reviewed. Detailed notes

were taken regarding the planning of the 2017 DHS

foster care Christmas party.

Also, we are excited to announce that a

permanent monthly meeting date has been

scheduled! The foster care outreach group will meet

every third Monday of the month at 5:30 pm at the

church. Please mark your calendars and plan to

attend! We have some exciting things to work on in

2017! Join us as we work to support the foster

community in Washington County. Questions? Please

call or email Emily Pieralisi at 822-2907 or

[email protected].

P.S. We are currently brainstorming on a name

for this outreach program. This will be one point of

discussion at the February meeting. Please bring any

name suggestions with you!

Diocesan Scholarship Applications

Now Being Accepted

Applications will be accepted through March 1 for the

various scholarships which benefit college or university

students, provided through the Diocese and St.

Andrew’s Cathedral. For many years, the diocese has

offered scholarships to deserving and needy students

and sees as an important ministry and mission

opportunity the ability to assist in the furthering of

students’ educational pursuits and formation.

Descriptions of the various scholarships—Adams,

Capers, Okolona, Misticos and Warren—as well as

applications for each can be accessed at:

http://www.dioms.org/scholarship/index.html#College.

Pertinent transcripts and a high-resolution headshot

photo should accompany each application. March 1 is

a hard deadline; applications will not be accepted

after 5:00 p.m. that day. If there are further questions

after having read scholarship descriptions and/or

application requirements, please contact the diocesan

office: 601-948-5954.

maybe you could come at 8 AM and help set up the

beginning at 9:15 a.m. That means the whole family is

free for Sunday school. Please say hello to Linda when

you see her and make her feel welcome.

Just a reminder that the nursery is for children through

age 5. Older children are welcome to attend children’s

church or stay with their parents for “big” church.

Edie takes off the first Sunday each month and Linda

will be taking off the second Sunday. There should

always be two people in the nursery so if you are

willing to volunteer one of these Sundays, please let the

church office know.
