Welcome in Autumn with Play, Dance, Foods, Music & Socialization at FestOval on October 6, from 6-8pm - Wendi Gale

In the Watts Hospital-Hillandale neighborhood, autumn is welcomed and celebrated in Oval Park with FestOval. FestOval will take place this year as the First Thursday October gathering on the North Side of Oval Park on October 6 with home-made picnics and a mul-titude of food-trucks. In addition, there will be a fabulous band – Birds and Arrows – a beautiful trio, guitar, drums, cello and vocals that offers instrumental textures and intimate lyrics that should really catch your attention. We do plan to “pass the hat” to help the band cover its costs – $200. (Note: this will be the final "First Thursday" until next Spring).

Children's games are welcome, but must be personally initiated. We invite any parents or others who wish to bring game materials and organize them that evening to do so. Bring your lawn chairs or picnic cloths, relax or play, enjoy the neighbors you know and also meet new friends. We look forward to another great neigh-borhood gathering!

Kristina has an energetic 3 year old lab mix, Sophie, and two indoor cats named after two jazz greats, Miles and Quincy. She is also fostering a won-derful sweetheart of a puppy and if anyone is inter-ested, they can read about her on her blog at http://www.operationkhloe.blogspot.com. We're all looking forward to the day when she finds her forever home! Kristina is loving the food, good people and strong communities this area has to offer. She says, “ I love what I’m doing and couldn't be happier to have found both a great place to work and live. I'm not sure that happens enough anymore these days. I look forward to meeting many of you as well!”

Maria Moraca Blankenship is the new renter at 2506B Englewood. She is thrilled to be living in this part of Durham. "I've been in the area for 4 years, and am an acupuncturist doing home visits, and also at Duke Integrative Medicine (part-time). I'm super excited to be able to walk to Whole Foods, and want to try some yoga classes at Nataraja! I'm looking for-ward to meeting my neighbors, the neighborhood art walk, and the food truck party in October".

Amber and Kenny Carter and their four cats (Malibu, Jack, Baby Willow and Cracker) moved to Oval Drive in August. Amber is a veterinarian at North Paw Animal Hospital and Kenny works in sales at Mark Jacobson Toyota. They are excited to be living back in Durham where it all began. Fifteen years ago they had their first date at Satisfaction and got engaged at Magnolia grill 3 months later! They met at Duke in 1996 and have lived all over the country since then. They love good BBQ, a tasty beverage and cheering on the Blue Devils and Wolfpack.

Stephanie Gilmore is a newcomer to the neighbor-hood, a postdoc in Women's Studies at Duke, and is “so happy to be here!”

Liz Milewicz, new to the neighborhood, moved into a house on the corner of Englewood & Alabama on July 4 weekend. Her almost-4-year-old daughter, Anna, has joined her, and her husband will be here once their house in Georgia has sold and he's gotten a job in the area. "We love the WH neighborhood and are enjoy-ing our regular forays to Oval Park and LocoPops". Liz works as the Project Manager of The African Origins Portal at Duke University Libraries, and Anna will be starting at KIN this fall. Liz thanks us for the fantastic listserv – “this is truly a great neighborhood, we've felt quite welcomed already with all the people we've met on our walks and exploring the area.”

Travis, Cassy & Leo Stubbs moved into 1309 Virginia Avenue (corner of Virginia and Wilson) in early June. Leo is already 2 years old and is waiting and waiting and waiting for his new sibling, due this month, to come into the world to greet him.
