This issue introduces the sport of Agility. Our fellow PWD owners are quickly discovering how
much fun they and their dogs have in this sport. Relatively easy to learn, you can usually begin
competing within the first year of training. While this was a sport dominated by Border Collies,
our PWDs have arrived on the scene and are beating those BCs at their favourite game.
While many people are intimidated by what looks to be perfect control over your dog, the reality
is that these are still our fun loving, sometimes unpredictable dogs who somehow get totally
focused when on a course. Much like water work, your dog only needs some basic obedience.
The other great thing about the sport is that people of all ages and shapes can become involved.
I've seen kids as young as 8 years old and adults well over 70 years old out there competing and
enjoying the time with their dogs. Best of all is that it is just plain fun to get out there and run
around with your dog. You owe it to yourself to give it try. So, when the sun takes a vacation this
winter, look for an Agility group to join and have a blast.
Congratulations to our Alberta members for holding their first Booster and for organizing their
local members into a newly recognized CKC Regional PWD club. We look forward to next year's
National Specialty in Alberta. Thanks also for hosting our first official CKC Agility match and
qualifying our club to host our own trials in the future.
Don't forget that this year the BC Club is hosting a Regional Specialty with Judges Jan Kay
(Regular classes) and Janis Watts (Sweepstakes). As in previous years, this BC event will be held
in conjunction with the October show in Abbotsford, BC and gives competitors a change to par-
ticipate in 5 shows over 4 days.

Everything you wanted to know about
The answers given below are based on AAC (Agility Association
of Canada) and CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) rules only, as they
hold the majority of the trials in Canada.
Q: DOES MY DOG HAVE TO BE PUREBRED?A: No for AAC – Yes for CKC – either registered or with a
PEN number, or have a CKC Miscellaneous Class Certificate
number if designated as a Miscellaneous Class Breed.
Q: DOES MY DOG HAVE TO BE REGISTERED
WITH AAC TO COMPETE IN THEIR TRIALS
A: Yes, you must apply for a registration # and cannot com-
pete before you have it. The registration card, which is also the
height card, will be checked by the trial giving club at every
trial – so don’t lose it.
Q: DOES MY DOG HAVE TO BE OFFICIALLY
MEASURED?A: Yes for AAC. You require at least two measurements by
two different judges – these will be done at your first two trials
and the measurement marked on your dog's height card. If the
height is very close to a cut off point for a different jump
height, you may require a third one. A dog must be 2 years old
before the height is official.
CKC does not require a measurement, but a judge can call for
one if they feel you are jumping in the wrong height division.
Q: HOW DO I KNOW WHAT HEIGHT MY DOG
SHOULD JUMP?A: Here is the breakdown:
AAC CKC
Dog Height Jump Dog Height Jump
12” or less 10” 10” or less 8”
Over 12 to 16” 16” Over 10 to 14” 12”
Over 16 to 21” 22” Over 14 to 18” 16”
Over 21” 26” Over 18 to 22” 20”
Over 22” 24”
Therefore if your dog measured 14” it would jump 16” in AAC
and 12” in CKC, but if it was 14.5” it would jump 16” in both
AAC and CKC. There are lower jump heights for veterans (7 yrs
and over) in AAC as well as a “Specials” class where you can
choose to jump a lower height if you feel your dog will have
trouble at the full height.
Q: WHAT AGE DOES MY DOG HAVE TO BE TO
ENTER AN OFFICIAL TRIAL?A: 18 months of age
Q: WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF
TITLE CALLED?A: AAC: Starter, Advanced, Master, Agility Trial Champion of
Canada
CKC: Novice, Intermediate, Excellent, Agility Master
Typical Agility obstacles, from left to right: A wingless jump, the tunnel anda lattice jump, the dog walk.

Q: CAN MY DOG WEAR A COLLAR IN THE
RING?A: No for AAC, Yes for CKC as long as it is a plain buckle or
clip type with no attachments
Q: CAN I HAVE FAULTS AND STILL QUALIFY?A: No for AAC, however they do not count refusals at the
Starter level.
Yes for CKC – you must received at least 85 points out of a
possible 100. However, a knocked bar or a missed contact
means you do not qualify.
Q: I HAVE NOTICED PEOPLE SITTING IN THE
RING WHILE DOGS ARE RUNNING, WHAT
ARE THEY DOING?A: For all trials you need a scribe, a timekeeper, at least two
ring crew, a leash runner and a gate steward.
Q: WHAT DO THESE PEOPLE DO?A: A scribe takes note of the faults each dog has on their
run by watching the judge and his signals; a timekeeper has
the stopwatch and starts it as the dog crosses the start line,
and stops it when they cross the finish line; the ring crew are
responsible for putting up knocked bars, straightening the
chute, and changing the jump heights; the leash runner takes
your leash from the start to the finish line so it is ready for you
when you have completed your run; the gate steward makes
sure that the next dog is ready to go in.
Q: ARE THESE PEOPLE EMPLOYED BY THE
TRIAL GIVING ORGANIZATION?A: No, in most cases it is the competitors themselves that
do the stewarding. In the entry form they ask if you would be
willing to help. Once at the trial there is a job sheet – some-
times your name is already filled in under a task, and in others
you fill in the job you want.
As there are 8 or 9 runs a day at different levels, and one per-
son is maybe only in 3 of them, you would be assigned to a
class in which you were not running.
Q: HOW DO I KNOW HOW LONG I HAVE TO
RUN THE COURSE?A: There will be a judge’s briefing either before or just after
you have walked the course where you will be told the time
allowed – it is different for large and small dogs, and for veterans.
Q: HOW DO THEY DETERMINE THE TIME?A: It is based on yards per second for the length of the
course. For example, in Starters (AAC) there is a minimum of 2
yards per second to a maximum or 2.5 yards per second. So
the actual time allowed varies with the length of the course.
Q: I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE PEOPLE
DON’T WEAR ARMBANDS – HOW DO THEY
KNOW WHO YOU ARE?A: You are assigned a number and this is pre-printed on the
listing the gate steward has together with your dog’s name –
Agility but were afraid to ask
Typical Agility obstacles, from left to right: The teeter, the table with the framein the background, the weave poles.

AUGUST 2003 www.pwdcc.org PWDCC Waterlog4
Agilitythe scribe also has a pre-printed form with your number and
the dog’s name. The gate steward will call your dog’s name to
the scribe as you enter the ring – or you may be asked to tell
the scribe yourself. You will also be given a running order so
you will know when you will be going into the ring.
Q: I AM NOT VERY FIT AND NOT ABLE TO
RUN AS FAST AS MY DOG – CAN I STILL
DO AGILITY?A: Yes, you can train your dog to work away from you so you
don’t have to run the whole course right beside the dog
Q: CAN I CARRY FOOD OR A TOY WITH ME?A: No, as in obedience no food or toy is allowed in the ring.
Q: CAN I TALK TO MY DOG?A: Yes, you can talk to them as much as you like.
Q: DO I GET FAULTED IF MY DOG BARKS?A: No, it doesn’t matter how much they bark.
Q: CAN I TOUCH MY DOG IN THE RING?A: No, once they have crossed the start line you cannot
touch them. However, if they accidentally knock into you that
is not usually faulted in AAC but could be a 5 fault penalty in
CKC – or an NQ (not qualifying) – judge’s discretion.
Q: CAN I TOUCH ANY OF THE OBSTACLES?A: No, you will also be faulted if you step over or under an
obstacle, or step on the fabric portion of the chute.
Q: WHAT IF IT IS RAINING?A: You get wet! It is a good idea to have a change of cloth-
ing in the car, or at the very least dry shoes and socks.
I hope this has answered some of the questions you may have
had about agility.
My e-mail is at the bottom of the article, so if you do have any
other questions, drop me a note.

I was asked if he would continue to participate now that we have this Title – myanswer “Of course – Purple doesn’t care about the ribbons, the Titles – he lovesthe sport (as this picture demonstrates) and wants his cookie for having fun withme!” So as long as he is having fun we will continue to play.
So the moral of the story – If we can do it – So can you!
Many thanks to our great trainer and friend Noel Duruisseau of Paw-Z-Tracks, myfamily and friends for their encouragement and support over the years and ofcourse to My Best Friend and Partner – Purple!

In 1997 we decided to add a dog to our
family and because of allergy issues were
intrigued by the Portuguese Water Dog.
We connected with breeder Judy Nixon of
Rock Island, Illinois. She had an Irish
marked curly boy for us if we were interest-
ed. My heart skipped a beat. Heck, yes!!!!!
Shadow, Can./Am. Ch. Cutwater Turquoise
Rhapsody, stole our hearts and within six
months, we had another PWD, Skipper,
Valkyrie’s Wind and Waves. She is a St.
John Ambulance Therapy dog and loved by
all who meet her.
Not knowing anything about grooming I
hooked up with Nancy Johnson of Thee
Kennel in Moffat. After my first visit I knew
we were in the right place. My dogs never
looked better and they actually enjoyed going.
PWD’s mature slowly and Shadow was no
exception. Nancy liked Shadow and saw
his potential. She who introduced him to
handler Doug Belter and the rest is history.
Shadow started his show career in 2001.
Shown only ten weekends that year, he
obtained his American and Canadian
championships while also taking multiple
group placements. This dog went in the
ring to win and won over Specials from the
classes in both countries. (Shadow was
shown in the United States by Julie Parker
of Valkyrie Farms.) We were elated to learn
he was the #3 Portuguese Water dog for
2001 in Canada.
We were only going to finish Shadow, but
with all the interest he attracted, it encour-
aged us to take it one step further and
Special him in 2002. Shadow is first and
foremost our pet, but he was born to show
and we couldn’t take that away from him.
From day one, Shadow has been in the
retriever trim and that is how he was
shown. I am also proud to say that FCI
judges acknowledged him at breed and
group level. I remember watching one FCI
judge, who after confirming that Shadow’s
trim was acceptable, gave him breed and
later a group placement. His comment on
Shadow, “Magnificent”.
When his Canadian campaign ended last
year, Shadow was the #1 Portuguese Water
Dog for 2002. We cut off his show coat and
put him in the lion trim. In 2003, Shadow
was selected by Purina for their 2003
Chosen by Champions Campaign and he
can be seen in their Top Dogs ad this year.
(He eats their Turkey and Barley formula.)
We all get our 15 minutes of fame and
Shadow’s accomplishments and the memo-
ries he created will remain with us forever.
Caroline Gmaz lives with her family,
Shadow and Skipper in Oakville Ontario.

From AlbertaAlberta Portuguese Water Dog ClubAgility Seminar and Fun DayJune 7, 2003
What a great day and another great facility – Rainbow Kennels
just minutes from downtown Calgary. Approximately 25 PWDs
got together throughout the day to learn a few new agility
moves or just to try agility to see if they liked it. Noel
Duruisseau of Paw-Z-Tracks gave the advanced dogs 3 hours of
handling classes and all were ready for the approaching season
with a few tips, the starters were amazed that in a short two
hours their dogs were performing a variety of obstacles and
sequences. When these groups were finished the light weights
came out to enjoy tunnels and the A-Frame (about 1 foot high).
The weather was perfect warm and sunny not quite the snow
that arrived for the Fall seminar.
The evening ended with a potluck supper, with the discussion
for the evening focusing on the upcoming August booster, the
2004 National Specialty and of course who was heading to
Snohomish to the water Trials this year. Looks like we will have
a strong Canadian and Albertan contingent once again.
Sunday morning arrived and with it two Sanction matches, one
for the Portuguese Water Dog Club of Canada and one for the
Alberta Portuguese Water Dog Club. We had a great turnout
and many that attended the seminar came out to try out the
Fun Match. It was great to see everyone trying out some of the
things they had learned the day before.

From OntarioA report on the Cerf ClinicApril 4, 2003
The Cerf Clinic was held in June as planned. It was a nice
sunny day and we spent our time sitting in the darkened
garage drinking coffee and eating Tim Bits waiting for the
drops to take effect. Dr. Williams, a new PWD owner, chatted
with us about eye problems. She also shared some of the fun
times she was having with her new puppy. Twelve dogs were
tested, seven PWD's, three mini Schnauzers, an Afghan hound
and a Bloodhound. Thank goodness for the non PWD's or the
clinic would never have taken place. The clinic was over by
noon with everyone going home happy.
There are plans to have the clinic again next June, hopefully
with a larger turnout and we can offer other activities as well.
Thank you to all participants. Dr. Williams may come not only
as the doctor in charge but as a PWD member as well!

A report on the Water Training CampJune 27-29, 2003
The idea of participating in water training all started when I
took my two waterdogs to a cottage and was amazed at their
natural skill in swimming, diving from the dock and retrieving
in the lake. I know what you are thinking, "of course, they are
waterdogs!!".
I listened to a water training session at the National Specialty
in May 02 given by Cathy Gadd. Cathy has 14 water titles on
her 3 waterdogs and is our Canadian expert. So this year Cathy
arranged a water camp for small group of enthusiasts. We went
to a private lake in Huntsville and learned about water work
step-by-step. All that was required was a dog with basic obedi-
ence and a willingness on the part of the owner and dog to
learn and have fun.
Day 1 The group met at the lake and the first hour was spent
learning about rules, equipment and etiquette.
I have to admit that after I listened to the steps required to
train the Apprentice level I was overwhelmed and wondered if
my dog Nina could never complete a level. I don't think I was
the only owner with doubts. Cathy assured us that humans are
harder to train than dogs. I laughed. When the day was done I
realized Cathy was not joking. The dogs performed as though
they had been doing this their entire life. We humans had to
repeat certain tasks over and over again.
During the training session each task was broken down into
small steps. As Nina repeated each exercise my confidence
grew as well as my pride in her accomplishment. We were
working as a team, me throwing bumpers and her retrieving,
sitting on the boat while it was paddled out onto the lake and
staying, swimming with me in the lake for 2 minutes. All this
accomplished in one day with Cathy's guidance and the friend-
ship and help of the other owners. Day 1 is complete.
Day 2 Today we get to test our new-found skills. Cathy is going
to run a mock Water Trial for all the participants.
When each dog completes the trial there is a huge round of
applause for handler and dog. We all feel great about our
achievements this weekend. I will leave this weekend with
homework for Nina and I to work on.
This waterwork weekend left me with the most overwhelming
sense of satisfaction that I can work with my dog in a fun envi-
ronment doing the things that both of us love. This is what
owning a dog should be about. I would recommend at least try-
ing waterwork once. You do not have to be a swimmer and ath-
lete. You need to love your dog and want to have fun together.
Happy water work from Nina and Louise Rossen
A report on the Traverse City Water TrialAugust 16/17, 2003
The intrepid WADE Team set out on Thursday August 14th for
Traverse City only to cross the border and discover that there
was no power! Not only at home but in Michigan also. A fateful
start. The next day we arrived at the site and met up with
Cathy Gadd and her family who had been visiting with Chuck
and Vicky Robinson. (Chuck is a Water Trial judge and Vicky
was competing with her dog Moxie.) A thorough practice under
Cathy’s watchful eye ensued and we then settled into our near-
by motel. The next day, at the site, nerves in full force, Cathy
went first and showed us how it is done. Both Seabe (Tiago's
Seabiscuit AWD, owned by Heather Guans/Cathy Gadd) and
Tashi (Tiago's Fuje Bela D'Aqua, AWD, owned by Connie
McCandless/Cathy Gadd) got their Apprentice titles. Then Kate
and Jac, Donna with Millie and Roslyn with Motes tried their
luck. Each dog/handler team missed, but there was Sunday to
try again. Roslyn and Motes (Bedford's Tasha Yar, AWD) went
first, Motes finally obliged and carried the bumper to the boat
(the only task she failed on Saturday), did an interesting
approach to retrieve the line, swam reluctantly with Roslyn, but
they squeaked it in. Donna had a heartbreaking run, Millie
never worked better, tail up bounding into the lake, a breath-
taking swim with both in tandem. But Millie had a toe on the
dreaded 3 ft. line during the bumper retrieve and missed quali-
fying. Kate and Jac were working well until the steward some-
how showed Jac the bumper and he was distracted through the
next 2 tasks. Kate stayed positive and used the rest of the trial
to train Jac. Then Cathy, resplendent in a Canadian flag
umbrella hat, trialed with Tashi failed to qualify, but did again
with Biscuit, although she already had their titles. The team
bonded, had a blast and are still training for the PWDCA
Nationals in Memphis. More to come.

NAME: Kewbeach Spirit of Napoleon (I was born a confidentlittle dog with attitude and dubbed Napoleon by Debbie, a
nice neighbor down the street.)
NICKNAMES: Polo
AGE: 4 months
LEADER OF MY PACK: Born half the size of my 3brothers, I worked my way up to top dog in my litter – based
largely on my loud bark and fierce growl. Now I love and
respect my human family members, but I keep testing Tashi
(my mom) to see if I can get out of last place.
EDUCATION: Started training at 8 weeks, dropped out ofmy first school after a couple of sessions (I was easily distract-
ed) and moved to a smaller class for performance pups.
LEISURE TIME FAVOURITES: Playing with Tashi – keepaway, running , wrestling…
PET PEEVE: the “Gentle Leader” collar – it still feels funnyon my nose!
FAVOURITE NON-CONSUMABLE: Plants, especiallyday lilies. I have loved them since I was a wee pup. Who says
they’re non-consumable?
SPECIAL SKILLS: Barking – I sat up and barked in mylitter box when I was just 3-4 weeks old. Swimming – started
in the backyard pond, when I fell in while trying to drink from
the waterfall. And, of course, agility tunnels and dog walk – I
love this stuff, can’t wait to do more!
BIGGEST CATASTROPHE: It’s a tie between peeing onthe cold air return grate and pooping on the hot air register.
Hey, I was young – how was I to know these were really bad
places?
BATHING AND GROOMING TOLERANCE: I like thecookies, but I really don’t see the point.
FAVOURITE DESTINATION: Jasper’s house down thestreet - he’s a PWD just a week older than I. Cathy Gadd’s
house in the Beach where I was born – I love seeing the
people and Uncle Kelsey
TOYS OF CHOICE: My red shaggy dog. I’m not sure what
happened to it since Tashi and I ripped the stuffing out of it.
My human mom’s red gardening gloves are almost as good.
Who says I’m colour blind!

day the Beattie family “adopted’ him from his loving
breeders Gillian and Frank Goldschmidt (Beloula

Remember – while you are waiting to go
in the ring, don't ignore your dog! this is
the time to warm him up and get his
focus AND calm your nerves – tricks can
do it!
High Five:
Have your dog sit and hold something
he really wants in your hand at his chin
level (if it is a Portie, it probably will be
food). Hold it as high as you think he
can reach. After the gnawing and slob-
bering, he probably will paw at your
hand – reward with the treat and do it
again. If you have a VERY well behaved
pup that would not think of pawing your
hand, move your hand to the side and
this will put him off balance and raise
his paw – reward and try again.

Because the Pups were in BIG TROUBLE,(see below) Dad (Vasco) thinks that teaching themto dance will help keep them out of trouble.
Lotus is trying it, but Blossom who IS TROUBLEwith a capital T, is looking quite bored! I hope itworks!! Donna
