Synopsis Short Synopsis: From executive producers Martin Scorsese and Dean Devlin, and based on true events, writer-‐director Nick Sandow's THE WANNABE follows Mafia-‐obsessed Thomas (Boardwalk Empire’s Vincent Piazza in a breakthrough performance) as he tries to insert himself into the mob world just as the John Gotti trial is underway in 1992 New York City. The film follows Thomas, who wants nothing more than to be a part of a world where mob ties equate with social currency, as he embarks on a manic, drug-‐fueled romance and downward spiral with a local fading beauty named Rose (played by Academy Award®–winner Patricia Arquette). Produced by Lizzie Nastro, Michael Gasparro and Piazza, THE WANNABE also co-‐stars Doug E. Doug, David Zayas, Domenick Lombardozzi, Vincenzo Amato and Michael Imperioli. Long Synopsis: Based on true events. There was only one story for Thomas Greco in New York City in 1992. As John Gotti stood trial and center stage, no story was more fascinating, more high stakes or more out of reach for Thomas, a mob wannabe from a neighborhood where ties to Gotti were the ultimate social currency. As Thomas searches for any opportunity to insert himself into a world in which no one wants him to have a part, another neighborhood fixture, the fading beauty Rose, sees in Thomas the chance to realize her own desire for acceptance and belonging. Through their manic and misguided pursuit to matter to someone, their lives and fates become more intertwined, more volatile and more newsworthy than either of them could have ever imagined. A new take on the classic genre, THE WANNABE approaches iconic mob lore from a new perspective, that of an outlier whose palpable desire to live the cinematic fantasy of the mob lifestyle propels him to create his own reality, blurring the definition of love, loyalty, devotion and betrayal.

Q&A WITH NICK SANDOW
What inspired you to write the screenplay for the film? Did you always plan on directing the film? I read a few newspaper articles about the real couple. I was fascinated with the character of the "wannabe", this desperation to want to be something you're not. I related to that. I came from the same neighborhood as Thomas. I was always fascinated by how we adopted movie language as our own. I grew up on gangster films and around this world, and the line between fantasy and reality always seamed tenuous. No, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with it, but after my first feature it became clear I couldn't give it to any one else to direct. Did you do any research on the mafia and John Gotti before writing the screenplay? I did some factual research about the trial, but not much. I didn't get caught up in the facts, only how they pertained to the emotional life of my characters. For a long time as an actor, I always wanted to stay away from the gangster genre, but this story felt close to me and I could see my way into it. In your own words, how would you describe what the film is about? The tragedy of desperately wanting to be something you're not. The film is based on true events. What parts of the film are based on reality? The couple, the time, the place, the robberies, the final death. The bigger broader elements. All the rest is made up.
Can you talk about the casting process, and how you ended up working with Vincent Piazza and Patricia Arquette? Vincent did a reading of the script and I didn't know him or his work, and I thought he was fantastic. Then I happened to work with him on Boardwalk Empire and we became friends and stayed in touch. He really got behind the script in a big way and helped to make it happen. Patricia's name came up in casting, and as soon as she got in my head I couldn't let the thought of her as Rose go. Michael Imperioli had just worked with her and introduced us. She read the script and came on board. She wasn't the obvious choice, and the fact that Rose was older than Thomas was very much called into question along the way, but it was how I wrote it and a big part of the dynamic, and in the end very important to me. How long was the shoot and where did you shoot the film? We shot for 20 days in NYC – Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx. What was the process in shooting the Sparks Scene? I was committed to blurring the realities in the scene. To me it was a kind of a "blast-‐off" after the first social club robbery, propelling Thomas and Rose into Thomas' fantasy world and his infatuation with mob lore. The actual Castellano hit played out for everyone in New York at the time over and over on the news, and in the newspapers. The real police photos are beautiful. Thomas was now finally living the life he always dreamed of. The drugs were just fuel for the fire. We knew we couldn't afford to get the real Sparks and close down mid town, control the lighting, etc., so we really tried to get under what the scene was about and stay as minimal as possible. I think the constraints really played in our favor. We had looked at a sound stage to shoot our required tax break day and they had this ground floor that we could drive the car into, control the light, and really have a ball with it. We had our designer make that famous Sparks canopy. Brett Pawlak, the DP, really went for it. What was your favorite scene to shoot? My favorite scene is the espresso scene with Vincent Piazza and Vincenzo Amato. I loved shooting that scene and I love watching it. To me, it's the movie in a nutshell. What was the most difficult scene to shoot?
The block party. We shot in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and our police escort in charge refused to close down the street for us to shoot a BLOCK PARTY. He was making us run cars through every time we called "cut." I stopped calling "cut." It was a rough one. It was also freezing that day and difficult to keep all those extras warm. What do you want audiences to take away from the film and the characters? Well, this is a hard one. I always want them to leave with questions. The same questions I asked myself throughout the process – questions about identity. Who do I think I am? Who do I want to be? What role does my relationship play in that, and what role do movies and popular culture play in the idea I have of myself?
