The Wall Street Cheat Sheets

Here is a wealth of information on how to eat on the road, whether

you’re grabbing lunch or breakfast at your corner deli, eating with the

kids at a fast-food place, choosing an appetizer at a high-end hotel bar,

grabbing a drink at a sports bar, or settling in for a double feature at the

movies. We’ve also included some suggestions on how to work the salad

bar, as well as some original salad bar “recipes” that will lift your greens

out of the doldrums. Finally, there’s the Wall Street Shopping List. It’s

a complete list, with websites where appropriate, of all the foods sug-

gested on the Wall Street Diet.

Coffee Bar Picks and Skips

For all coffee/tea choices the best option is hot or cold tea or coffee for

0–5 calories (no additions). If the calories in the drink exceed 60, you

must lower the calories in your breakfast to compensate (or add fruit and

count it as a breakfast if they’re over 150). For an occasional afternoon

Fun Snack you can pick a drink under 200 calories. Note: all recom-

mended picks are tall sizes (or ounces are specified). If you choose a

larger size, pay attention to the additional calories.

Bar Snacks

this is the horror show for dieters. take a deep breath and just one

glance down at the list of Skips I’ve listed here. Yes, it’s a long list. It’s

meant to frighten you. You can see that a couple of hours of munching

bar snacks could set you way back on your weight loss goal. this is why

I often suggest that clients simply make a bar visit their dinner: skip the

snacks and have a burger (no fries!) and a salad and be done with it. Now

you won’t be able to say you didn’t know.

Salad Bar Tips and Recipes

A salad bar can be an oasis of healthy eating or a fat trap. Many offices

(as well as local delis and restaurants, of course) have extensive salad

bars, and sometimes it’s confusing to know how to fill your bowl.

High-dividend Chain Choices*

C hain restaurants are a fact of life. Many of us shun them because

we think that they’ve got nothing on the menu that would be both

tasty and healthy. (Of course some of us do the drive-through

on the sly, but that’s another matter!) the good news is that more of

the chains are offering healthy choices. If you know what to pick, you

can find a good low-calorie meal at a chain. this is important if you’re

traveling, in a rush, or ferrying the kids. Here is a good selection of

national chains with their best and worst picks. You should know that

all calorie data we’ve provided is from the chains themselves. We have

to hope that they are correct. (Is it really possible that Panda Garden’s

Kung Pao Shrimp has only 240 calories? they say so.) You can always

check their websites so you can find updates and further information if

you’re interested.

a few notes on choosing chain meals: We did list soup options,

but individuals who are salt-sensitive must be aware of the sodium and

should probably not choose a soup. If you are not salt-sensitive, you can

always pick the soup and a veggie side and call it a meal. If the soup

* Please note: not all choices are available in every outlet.

has a Juicy Carb (like beans) in it and there is no other protein in the

meal, then you do not need to count it as a Juicy Carb for the day. If you

choose the soup and a main dish with protein, then the soup becomes

your Juicy Carb. Where sandwiches or burgers are offered, you can al-

ways skip the bread (saving you a Juicy Carb) and request a house salad

with dressing on the side (pick the lightest dressing available).

Movie Theater Picks and Skips

M ovie theaters are hotbeds of mindless eating. But sometimes it’s

Child-sized bag of popcorn (no added butter) 280–300

Even a small popcorn without butter will set you back 400 calories. Un-

less there is a child-sized bag available, avoid the popcorn altogether.

butter packs in an entire day’s worth of calories!

National and International Airport Terminal Food Options

H ere is a selection of the best food options at the busiest domestic airport

terminals as well as London and Hong Kong. the calorie information

is directly from the restaurants themselves and we have to rely on their

accuracy. In many instances, we’ve provided websites that you can ac-

cess for more detailed or up-to-date information on these restaurants.

For more detailed recommendations on the best options at the chain

restaurants, see “High-dividend Chain Choices,” page 237.

Hudson News, located at almost every airport in the nation, is listed

first and separately. Otherwise the airports are listed in alphabetical

order by city, national terminals first.

Best bet at Hudson News is to choose a bar (see below), bottled water,

a pack of sugar-free gum, and some reading material. all other food

choices should be skipped. See note below.

Airline Meals

G etting nutritional information from the airlines about their meals is an ex-

ercise in frustration. Most are far from forthcoming about what they’re

serving you in the air. Some don’t seem to have any nutritional informa-

tion at all; others don’t want to share it. We did the best we could and

have been able to come up with some good general recommendations

on what to choose on your flight. Keep in mind that the airlines offer

varying meals regionally and that they change them regularly so that an

entrée offered in May might be off the menu in august. and a meal on a

flight from Denver may not be offered on a flight from Boston.

Some general guidelines for flying Wall Streeters: for most

airlines, you can call ahead and pick a low-calorie, low-fat, or low-

cholesterol meal, if a meal is served. You can also call or check the

airline website to find out if a meal will be served, or just snacks.

In first class and business class, meals are typically served, but you

need to steer clear of Dry Carbs, salty nuts, salty drinks. If you eat just

the protein, veggies, and fruit, the meal itself can be nutritious. You

may want to bring along snacks on your trip. You should make your

choices based on what kind of eater you are: a Controlled Eater or a

Clean Plate Clubber. See the travel chapter, page 144, for more details

on this.

airlines are all domestic and are in alphabetical order.

American Airlines

american sells snacks and meals. On flights over three hours your

breakfast option is a breakfast bagel sandwich. You can take out the

turkey and cheese and have it with Dijonnaise mustard and eat half

the bagel (about 330 calories), but you have to be a good deconstructor

and a Controlled Eater. If you ate the bagel breakfast sandwich as it

is served with the mustard, it would be about 470 calories. On flights

over three hours in the afternoon or evening there is also an asian

chicken salad served without the dressing for around 360 calories.

there are individual snacks offered, but all are between 300 and 860

calories, so best to skip.

Note:these calorie counts are just estimates, as portion sizes are not available for the meals.

rything in the box. If you end up with a box in front of you, I would

pick two choices and make it a protein and look for a fruit (cheese and

applesauce, or tuna and raisins, or double up on the protein with cheese

and beef jerky). they also have a wrap/sandwich/turkey salad option,

but you need to deconstruct the sandwich—eating just the protein—or

in the salad, pick out the lettuce, turkey, approved veggies, and have

some fruit on the side. You basically have to be a Controlled Eater in

this situation and good at navigating your way though each possibility to

make the healthiest choice. If you are not a good deconstructor, the best

Many of my clients love to grill in the summer and ask for recommen-

dations on grills and marinades, and that’s why I include the Williams-

Sonoma Grilling rub. the taco mix is good for making low-fat turkey

tacos. If you use the extra-lean ground turkey, prepare with mix, and

serve with shredded lettuce, tomato, onion on a La tortilla wrap, you’ve

got a delicious, low-fat taco.

Soups

Check the serving size on the soup container. If you’re a CPCer, trader

Joe’s or tabatchnick’s are good choices because they come in individual

servings. If you’re salt-sensitive, either because of high blood pressure

or because you tend to bloat, then choose low-sodium soups. If the soup

has beans, lentils, corn, potato, squash, peas, or barley, you must count

it as a Juicy Carb. the exception is that beans/lentils count as protein if

they’re the only protein in meal.

Meals/Meal Components

In general, for lunch you should choose a frozen meal that’s less than

280 calories for women and 300 calories for men. For dinner, choose an

entrée that’s less than 380 for women and less than 400 for men. If you’re

eating late, say after 9 p.m., it’s best to choose a dinner that’s very low in

calories. For example, amy’s Mexican tamale Pie is just 150 calories.

this is a good late-dinner choice. I like amy’s brand because they’re or-

ganic and they taste great. all frozen meals count as a Juicy Carb.

VEGGiE BurGErS/MEat-FrEE PrODuCtS

In general, you should keep to the portion size listed on the package for

these items. the exception is with veggie burgers as most people are not

satisfied with one and really need two. this is fine if each burger is less

than 120 calories. amy’s Veggie Burgers are higher in calories, so if you

choose them, keep it to one burger.
