WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION

Jesus tried without success to draw the crowds beyond their immediate physical

needs to something which would satisfy their deepest desires. They did not

understand that in the way Jesus lived, loved and died for them they would see the

face of God. Sunday by Sunday, in the liturgy, the same promise is made to us.

Anyone who looks to the Word proclaimed or to the bread broken and shared will

neither hunger nor thirst.

OPENING HYMN

INTROIT - Teach Me O Lord - Attwood

GREETING - (Please remain standing)

President: In the name of God: Creator, Redeemer and Giver of life.

Amen.

Grace to you and peace from God our Creator, the love at our

beginning and without end, in our midst and with us.

God is with us, here we find new life.

Let us give thanks for the coming of God’s reign of justice and love.

Jesus Christ is good news for the poor,

release for the captives,

recovery of sight for the blind

and liberty for those who are oppressed.

2

1. Light's abode, celestial Salem,

Vision whence true peace doth spring,

Brighter than the heart can fancy,

Mansion of the highest King;

O how glorious are the praises

Which of thee the prophets sing!

3. There no cloud or passing vapour

Dims the brightness of the air;

Endless noon-day, glorious noon-day,

From the Sun of suns is there;

There no night brings rest from labour,

For unknown are toil and care.

2. There for ever and for ever

Alleluia is outpoured;

For unending, for unbroken

Is the feast-day of the Lord;

All is pure and all is holy

That within thy walls is stored.

4. Laud and honour to the Father,

Laud and honour to the Son,

Laud and honour to the Spirit,

Ever Three, and ever One,

Consubstantial, Co-eternal,

While unending ages run.

Thomas à Kempis ; Translator: J. M. Neale

Invitation to Confession (please kneel or sit)

Happy are those whose sins are forgiven,

whose wrongs are pardoned.

I will confess my sins to the Lord,

I will not conceal my wrongdoings.

Silence

God forgives and heals us.

We need your healing, merciful God:

give us true repentance.

Some sins are plain to us;

some escape us,

some we cannot face.

Forgive us;

set us free to hear your word to us;

set us free to serve you.

The presiding priest says

God forgives you.

Forgive others;

Forgive yourself.

Silence

Through Christ, God has put away your sin:

approach your God in peace.

THE GLORIA (please stand)

Glory to God in the highest,

and peace to God’s people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly King,

almighty God and Father,

we worship you, we give you thanks,

we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,

Lord God, Lamb of God,

you take away the sin of the world:

have mercy on us;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father:

receive our prayer.

3

For you alone are the Holy One,

you alone are the Lord,

you alone are the Most High,

Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

THE COLLECT

Living God, whose Son Jesus fed the hungry with the bread of his life and the

word of his kingdom: renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all

our weakness sustain us with your true and living bread, Jesus Christ our

Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for

ever. Amen.

THE READINGS (please sit) One of Israel’s treasured memories of the escape from Egypt in the 13th century BC

was of being fed miraculously with strange food, which they could understand only as

a gift from God.

A reading from the book Exodus (16:2-4, 9-15)

The whole congregation of the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron in

the wilderness. The Israelites said to them, ‘If only we had died by the hand of

the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate our fill of

bread; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly

with hunger.’ Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘I am going to rain bread from heaven

for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that

way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not. Then Moses

said to Aaron, ‘Say to the whole congregation of the Israelites, “Draw near to

the LORD, for he has heard your complaining.” ’ And as Aaron spoke to the whole

congregation of the Israelites, they looked towards the wilderness, and the glory of

the LORD appeared in the cloud. The LORD spoke to Moses and said, ‘I have heard

the complaining of the Israelites; say to them, “At twilight you shall eat meat, and

in the morning you shall have your fill of bread; then you shall know that I am

the LORD your God.” ’ In the evening quails came up and covered the camp; and in

the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. When the layer of dew

lifted, there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance, as fine as

frost on the ground. When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, ‘What is

it?’ For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, ‘It is the bread that

the LORD has given you to eat. (NRSV)

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.

Thanks be to God.

A reading from St. Paul's letter to the Ephesians (4:1-16)

In a circular letter to Asia Minor, Paul stresses the richness of our new life in

Christ, and that we should live up to our calling. The church exists solely to help

that happen.

I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling

to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience,

bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the

Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were

called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God

and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. But each of us was

given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it is said, ‘When

he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive; he gave gifts to his

people.’ (When it says, ‘He ascended’, what does it mean but that he had also

descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the same one

who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) The gifts

he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists,

some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for

building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of

the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of

Christ. We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by

every wind of doctrine, by people’s trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful

scheming. But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him

who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knitted

together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working

properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love.(NRSV)

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.

Thanks be to God.

and strengthen me ′ with a ′ willing ′ spirit.

THE GRADUAL HYMN

THE GOSPEL The first part of the Gospel of John proceeds by a series of miracles of Jesus that

lead to long debates with the Jews. In chapter 6, it is about true and living bread,

arising out of the feeding of the 5,000.

Alleluia, Alleluia

No one lives on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of

God.

Alleluia

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

A reading from the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John

(6:24-35)

Praise and glory to God.

So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they

themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus. When

they found him on the other side of the lake, they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when did

you come here?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for

me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not

work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which

the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his

seal.’ Then they said to him, ‘What must we do to perform the works of

God?’ Jesus answered them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in him

whom he has sent.’ So they said to him, ‘What sign are you going to give us then,

so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our

ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, “He gave them bread

from heaven to eat.” ’ Then Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, it was not

Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you

the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from

heaven and gives life to the world.’ They said to him, ‘Sir, give us this bread

always.’ Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will

never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.' (NRSV)

This is the Gospel of Christ.

Praise to Christ, the Word.

THE SERMON

THE APOSTLES' CREED (please stand)

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

INTERCESSIONS AND THANKSGIVING (please kneel or sit)

Let us pray for the Church and for the world, giving thanks for God’s

goodness.

Lord in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

Merciful Father,

accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Amen.

8

THE PEACE (please stand)

The peace of God be with you all.

In God's justice is our peace.

E te whānau / Brothers and sisters,

Christ calls us to live in unity.

We seek to live in the Spirit of Christ.

OFFERTORY HYMN

THE PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS The offerings of the people are presented. Bread and wine for communion are

placed on the table.

The president says

To you, Lord, belongs the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the

majesty.

All that is in the heavens and the earth is yours, and of your own we give

you.

9

1. Alleluia! sing to Jesus!

His the sceptre, his the throne;

Alleluia! his the triumph,

His the victory alone:

Hark! the songs of peaceful Sion

Thunder like a mighty flood;

Jesus out of every nation

Hath redeemed us by his Blood.

3. Alleluia! Bread of angels,

Thou on earth our food, our stay;

Alleluia! here the sinful

Flee to thee from day to day:

Intercessor, Friend of sinners,

Earth's Redeemer, plead for me,

Where the songs of all the sinless

Sweep across the crystal sea.

2. Alleluia! not as orphans

Are we left in sorrow now;

Alleluia! he is near us,

Faith believes, nor questions how:

Though the cloud from sight

received him,

When the forty days were o’er,

Shall our hearts forget his promise,

‘I am with you evermore’?

4. Alleluia! King eternal,

Thee the Lord of Lords we own;

Alleluia! born of Mary,

Earth thy footstool, heaven thy throne:

Thou within the veil hast entered,

Robed in flesh, our great High Priest;

Thou on earth both Priest and Victim

In the Eucharistic feast.

W. Chatterton Dix

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, through your goodness we have this

bread to offer, which earth has given and human hands have made. It will

become for us the bread of life.

Blessed be God for ever.

Blessed are you Lord God of all creation, through your goodness we have this

wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become for us

the cup of salvation.

Blessed be God for ever.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The president says:

The Lord is here.

God’s Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to offer thanks and praise.

It is right indeed to give you thanks most loving God,

through Jesus Christ, our Redeemer,

the first born from the dead,

the pioneer of our salvation,

who is with us always,

one of us, yet from the heart of God.

For with your whole created universe,

we praise you for your unfailing gift of life.

We thank you that you make us human

and stay with us

even when we turn from you to sin.

God’s love is shown to us:

while we were yet sinners,

Christ died for us.

In that love, dear God,

righteous and strong to save,

you came among us in Jesus Christ,

our crucified and living Lord.

10

You make all things new.

In Christ’s suffering and cross

you reveal your glory

and reconcile all peoples to yourself,

their true and living God.

In your mercy you are now our God.

Through Christ you gather us,

new-born in your Spirit,

a people after your own heart.

We entrust ourselves to you,

for you alone do justice

to all people, living and departed.

Now is the acceptable time,

now is the day of salvation.

Therefore with saints and martyrs,

apostles and prophets,

with all the redeemed,

joyfully we praise you and say:

Holy, holy, holy:

God of mercy, giver of life;

earth and sea and sky

and all that lives,

declare your presence and your glory.

All glory to you, Giver of life

sufficient and full for all creation.

Accept our praises,

living God, for Jesus Christ,

the one perfect offering for the world,

who in the night that he was betrayed,

took bread,

and when he had given thanks,

broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said:

Take, eat, this is my body

which is given for you;

do this to remember me.

After supper he took the cup;

and when he had given thanks,

he gave it to them and said:

Drink this, all of you.

11

This is my blood of the new covenant

which is shed for you, and for many,

to forgive sin.

Do this as often as you drink it

to remember me.

Therefore, God of all creation,

in the suffering and death

of Jesus our redeemer,

we meet you in your glory.

We lift up the cup of salvation

and call upon your name.

Here and now, with this bread and wine,

we celebrate your great acts of liberation,

ever present and living in Jesus Christ,

crucified and risen,

who was and is and is to come.

Amen! Come Lord Jesus.

May Christ ascended in majesty

be our new and living way,

our access to you, Father,

and source of all new life.

in Christ we offer ourselves

to do your will.

Empower our celebration with your Holy Spirit,

feed us with your life,

fire us with your love,

confront us with your justice,

and make us one in the body of Christ

with all who share your gifts of love.

Through Christ,

in the power of the Holy Spirit,

with all who stand before you

in earth and heaven,

we worship you, Creator God. Amen.

12

THE LORD’S PRAYER As Christ teaches us we pray

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours

now and for ever. Amen.

ARCHDEACON REG NICHOLSON RELIGION & BRIBERY

When George Washington campaigned for election in Virginia in 1758, he bought

three pints of alcohol for every eligible voter.

Of course such bribery would not be allowed today.

But do today’s churches offer bribery of a less blatant sort?

Over the centuries denominations have been accused of attracting members by

providing elaborate end-of-year activities, like Sunday School treats.

If a business firm, say a café, today offered you a discount each time you came to

the Cathedral, would you object?

It would be certainly be an interesting -- and quite different way of attracting

members -- but some people could describe it as illegal.

I know this, because it is currently happening in the United States.

Some business firms are offering discounts to people who attend church if they

can produce copies of church bulletins to prove they attend worship.

Immediately, some non-churchgoers are objecting, saying the move must be

illegal, since it is quite unfair to non-Christians.

But why does such a move have to be confined to Christians?

What if Jews and Muslims too were eligible for discounts. Would people object?

Investigations show that religion certainly does not increase corruption so there

should be no problem with free discounts.
