GENERAL MANAGER'S NOTE

Dear Friends,As we grapple yet again with our age-old civil rights challenges, we can shed light on the current moment by looking at what has worked for America in the past.

Emmy Award-winning director and writer Michelle Ferrari's The Vote is an eye-opening look at the rise of the Suffragette Movement and passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920 (confirming the right of women to vote). This was no small feat. Three generations of women fought for this right, and, yet, by 1909, there was virtually zero support for such an amendment in Washington DC.

But women like Elizabeth Cady Stanton argued fiercely for "the vote" and had shaped a national protest strate-gy that not only ended in the amendment's passage but remains a template for political change today.

The Vote doesn't just cheerlead, though. Ferrari shows us uncomfortable truths about the 19th Amendment, for example, the fact that African American women were still prevented from voting in the South, long after 1920.

Dramatic and thought-provoking, The Vote is, at its core, a story about power –– “who has it and who doesn't want to give it up,” says constitutional lawyer and writer Michael Waldman. “We’re still fighting over who has that power.”
