Or, better said: who is the church? Luther provided the definition of the Church in his Smalcald Ar- ticles of 1536. The Smalcald Articles were adopted as an author- itative document, one of the Evangelical-Lutheran Confessional Documents, which were published in the Book of Concord in 1580. Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church subscribes to these documents in its constitution in accordance with the subscription of the North American Lutheran Church to the Book of Concord. Luther wrote: “Thank God, a seven-year-old child knows what the Church is, namely, the holy believers and lambs who hear the voice of their Shepherd. For the children pray thus: I believe in one holy Christian Church. 3] This holiness does not consist in albs, tonsures, long gowns, and other… ceremonies of theirs [those who agree with the pope’s definition of the Church] beyond Holy Scripture, but in the Word of God and true faith.” (Book of Concord, Tappert, 315) This is a tremendously simple definition of the church, and in its simplicity, it is freeing. Among other things, it provides ecumenical freedom. What the Church essentially is, is all that is essential for church unity. Luther’s definition of the Church echoes, in Luther’s especially earthy and vivid language, what his close colleague Philip Melanchthon had written more diplomatically for presenta- tion to the Emperor in our Augsburg Confession, the foundational document of the Book of Concord, six years earlier (1530). The seventh article of our Augsburg Confession confesses: “It is also taught among us that one holy Christian church will be and re- main forever. This is the assembly of all believers among whom the gospel is preached in its purity and the holy sacraments are administered according to the Gospel. For it is sufficient for the true unity of the Christian church that the Gospel be preached Sunday School teachers were recognized and installed at both services September 12, 2021.

Reformation month is upon us once again. This year Reformation Sunday will be on All Hallows’ Eve, October 31st, the same day that Martin Luther posted the 95 Theses in 1517.

In my sermon for the eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost, on September 26th, I preached on the Lutheran doctrine of the church. Specifically, I set out to answer that question: what is the church? Or, better said: who is the church?

Luther provided the definition of the Church in his Smalcald Ar-ticles of 1536. The Smalcald Articles were adopted as an author-itative document, one of the Evangelical-Lutheran Confessional Documents, which were published in the Book of Concord in 1580. 3] This holiness does not consist in albs, tonsures, long gowns, and other… ceremonies of theirs [those who agree with the pope’s definition of the Church] beyond Holy Scripture, but in the Word of God and true faith.” (Book of Concord, Tappert, 315)

PASTOR’S MESSAGE Continued from page 1

in conformity with a pure understanding of it and that the sac-raments be administered in accordance with the divine word. It is not necessary for the true unity of the Christian church that ceremonies, instituted by men, should be observed uniformly in all places (Ephesians 4:4-5). (Tappert, 32, German)

According to the Augsburg Confession there is true church unity wherever the Gospel is being truly preached and the sac-raments rightly administered. This unity is at times visible, we can actually see people eating and drinking the body and blood of Christ, but more often auditory whenever we hear the good news of Christ actually being spoken. This church unity is heard and seen, or to use a theological term: revealed.

Luther’s statement, on the other hand, in the Smalcald Articles emphasizes the Church’s hidden unity: the unity of faith. While faith at times is heard, when faith is con-fessed and God is praised, only God

can see the heart. So, the unity of faith is the hidden unity of the Church. Church unity is revealed in Word and Sacrament and hidden in faith.

Considering that it has now been over 500 years since Luther posted the 95 Theses and there have long since been many different kinds of churches that believe different things, what does the seventh article of the Augsburg Confession mean for Lutherans living among other kinds of Christians? More on that next month.

Reopening Task Force UpdateIn accordance with CDC guidelines, congregants are encouraged to make use of masks. Masks are available at the Welcome Center, bulletin table and café. Westerville has declared a state of emergency due to Covid cases rising and hospitals filling to

capacity. They are asking everyone to help by wearing masks. This will be reevaluated on Nov 2.

Vanco has upgraded its giving software so when you log into the giving website it will have a new look and feel. At right see a screen-shot of the new landing page. Instead of a list where you filled in amounts, Vanco has adopt-ed a more “shopping cart” feel where you add the types of donations you want to make to your cart and then you check out. Please con-tact Melissa Hodek at [email protected] or Kathy at [email protected] if you have any questions on or problems using the new website.

LUTHER ON THE PLAGUEThe Bubonic Plague struck Wittenberg, Germany, in August

of 1527. This disease was horrific: in a single day, an infected person could show signs of delirium, fever, speech disorders, and loss of consciousness. Soon after, he/she would break out in large boils that infected the bloodstream and rapidly led to death. The plague’s mortality rate was extremely high, often over 50%.

Martin Luther and his wife Katharina, who was pregnant at the time, were urged to flee the city. However, they chose to stay in order to minister to the sick and dying. When asked by Christians in another city for advice, Luther wrote a pamphlet titled “Wheth-er One May Flee From a Deadly Plague”. It combines faith and realism in a way that is powerfully relevant to our present coro-navirus crisis.

Luther wisely counseled his readers to utilize medicine and intelligence “to guard and to take good care of the body so that we can live in good health.” He declared, “I shall fumigate, help purify the air, administer medicine, and take it.” He also practiced what we today call “social distancing”: “I shall avoid places and persons where my presence is not needed in order not to be-come contaminated and thus perchance infect and pollute oth-ers, and so cause their death as a result of my negligence.”

But he added this important caveat: “If my neighbor needs me, however, I shall not avoid place or person but will go freely.” He understood the urgency of sharing the gospel so as to lead the sick to saving faith before they died and to minister to believers in their final days.

Luther also urged everyone to be prepared for either life or death. How? By listening to the sermon and attending the sacra-ments. Martin Luther says, “First, one must admonish the people to attend church and listen to the sermon so that they may learn through God’s word how to live and how to die.” Accordingly, he conducted daily services during the crisis. Yet he made it clear that he respected the decisions of others who might disagree with him when he wrote:

“We die at our posts. Christian doctors cannot abandon their hospitals, Christian governors cannot flee their districts, Chris-tian pastors cannot abandon their congregations. The plague does not dissolve our duties: It turns them to crosses, on which we must be prepared to die.” ~Martin Luther, 1527

As Westerville began to grow, Lu-theran’s living in town found it more and more difficult to travel the dis-tance to St. Paul, some miles east of town.

After meeting on the second floor of the Westerville Town Hall for some time the new Congregation, now separately organized, built a white frame Church on Home Street, later remodeled in 1936. This remodeled Church, while no lon-ger a Church, still stands. In 1965 the Schrock Road Church was constructed.

A Note from David and Sara YourkvitchFrom the day we walked into Grace 17 years ago

we knew we were home. Pastor Zimmerman and Pastor Will made us feel welcome that first Sunday when they greeted us. Then when Pastor Zimmer-man retired - we discovered that our pastor in San-dusky Jamie Kaufman - had interned here under Pastor Zimmerman and that the harpist who played at his retirement was our organist at the same San-dusky church. Then when we were asked to serve on the Care Team by Pastor Walston - it turned out to be such an uplifting experience-especially when Da-vid got to give communion to a shut in by the name of Helen - Helen of Troy. She had walked in the room that David was giving communion and asked if she could also take it- he said sure-I just need your name- she said Helen- Helen of Troy. We’ve made some great friends there and know those friendships will continue. We know that Pastor Hopman and the rest of the ministry are going to do great things.

If you find yourself in the Ft Myers area - do not hesitate to give us a call @ 614-205-6378.
