JANUARY 2020 TEVET/SHEVAT 5780 Monthly Bulletin of Kehillat Ma’arav LET’S HAVE SOME FUN! Kate Flanagan, KM Executive Director If there is one certainty in Jewish communal life, it’s that we love to eat, we love to chat, and we love to celebrate. That’s why we’re kicking off what we hope to be a new tradition here at KM—Party Book! It’s just as fun as it sounds: members of the congregation offer to host group events at their homes (or offsite) for other members and friends. With the host generously donating the cost of the event, all proceeds (the “admission fee” paid to attend the event) benefit Kehillat Ma’arav. Wildly successful in school settings and at other synagogues, creating a Party Book builds social connections within our special communities all while raising the essential funds for continued operations. It’s a win-win! Here’s how it works: Imagine you have a great back yard. You decide to rent a projection screen and host a screening of a family- friendly movie for up to 50 people. You, the host, generously underwrite the cost of the screen and any munchies you’d like to provide for your guests. Members of KM (and hopefully their friends!) purchase “tickets” to the Backyard Movie Night at your house, and that admission directly benefits the synagogue. Or, let’s say you have a living room built for entertaining. You also have a chavurah that cooks up a storm. Put them together and you have the perfect combination for hosting a really fantastic cocktail party! Folks come to eat tiny foods, listen to some great music, have a few trendy spirits, all while raising money for your beloved KM. Party Book is FUN—we promise you—and so we’re excited to invite you to participate by hosting an event or simply attending one! Got an idea for a great event (the sky is the limit!)? We’d love to hear from you. Or, if you know a fellow mensch that might be willing to host/sponsor an experience, we want to know that too. In all, we’re excited to bring this new idea to Kehillat Ma’arav and we look forward to partying with you! THE VOICE

LET’S HAVE SOME FUN! Kate Flanagan, KM Executive Director

If there is one certainty in Jewish communal life, it’s that we love to eat, we love to chat, and we love to celebrate.

Here’s how it works:

Imagine you have a great back yard. You decide to rent a projection screen and host a screening of a family-friendly movie for up to 50 people.

CONTRIBUTIONS (as of December 30)

My name is Max Fine and I’m excited to celebrate becoming a bar mitzvah at KM on January 18.

I am in the 7th grade at Palms Middle School. My favorite subjects are history and robotics.

When I’m not preparing for my bar mitzvah, I like to play video games with my friends, build robots and watch history videos.

KM feels like home to me as I have spent every Shabbat here since I was 8. It means a lot to me to share this special Shabbat with the community that has been so welcoming to me and my mom.

MEET OUR BAR MITZVAH MAX FINE - JANUARY 18
