Voice for Animals (VFA) is grass roots, non-profit and no kill organization established in 1987 and originally headquartered in York, Maine.

This is the time of year when our donation boxes fill up the quickest, and we can use every penny we get! Money always goes to our on-going projects of rescuing and placing cats in forever homes, but a portion is now going towards our long term project of raising funds for a shelter/sanctuary in Southern Maine.This is also the time for town festivals. In August we will be present on the second day of York Days, Sunday, August 2. This is the first time in a number of years that we have done this and weplan to continue. We were unable to set up a table in Kittery for its Block Party, June 20, because no member was available to do so. However, it is our hope to be present for this event

next year, along with Market Square Days in Portsmouth. We are planning at least one special event for the fall and will need help getting ready for it and securing donations for a silent auction to be held at its intermission. REFLECTING ON JUNE

Voice for Animals fostered many new faces this June, such as Meeko (photo to the right). We also prepared for the upcoming event, “York Days” which is in August. We worked on our social media pages and are looking for more volunteers and members to help us grow.

Vegan Banana MuffinsOriginal recipe makes 1 dozen muffins

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup white sugar

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 teaspoon salt

2 cups mashed ripe bananas

1 cup canola oil

1 cup coconut milk

Instructions1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175

degrees C). Grease 12 muffin cups or line with paper liners.

2 Mix flour, white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, and salt together in a large bowl. Stir bananas, canola oil, and coconut milk together in a separate bowl; mix banana mixture into flour mixture until just combined. Fill muffin cups with batter.

3 Bake in the preheated oven until a tooth pick inserted in the center of a muffin comes out clean, 30 to 35 minutes. Author: All Recipes.com

Zucchini with Chickpea and Mushroom Stuffing

Serves: 8 servingsIngredients4 zucchini, halved

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, crushed

1/2 (8 ounce) package button mushrooms, sliced

1 teaspoon ground coriander

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin, or to taste

1 (15.5 ounce) can chickpeas, rinsed and drained

1/2 lemon, juiced

2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

sea salt to taste

ground black pepper to taste

Instructions4 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175

degrees C). Grease a shallow baking dish.

5 Scoop out the flesh of the zucchini; chop the flesh and set aside. Place the shells in the prepared dish.

6 Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Saute onions for 5 minutes, then add garlic and saute 2 minutes more. Stir in chopped zucchini and mushrooms; saute 5 minutes. Stir in coriander, cumin, chickpeas, lemon juice, parsley, salt and pepper. Spoon mixture into zucchini shells.

7 Bake in preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes, or until zucchini are tender.

YORK DAYS EVENT- AUGUST 2ND, 2015

Voice for Animals will be present at the York Days Craft Fair sponsored by York Parks and Recreation Department on its second day, Sunday, August 2nd, 2015 taking place at the york Beach Ball Field. (From I-95: Take the York Exit (Exit 7), bear left at the lights onto Rte 1. Travel approximately 3 miles north and take a right on Rte 1A. Follow 1A approximately 1.3 miles. You will see York's Wild Kingdom straight ahead and bear left. The York Beach Ball Field is next to the York Beach Fire Station (on the left). The event lasts from 10:00am-5:00pm. We will have Voice For Animals information, two books about animals written by VFA members and catnip toys for sale. We hope to see you there! Come introduce yourself!

Saphira was seen on Facebook, very pregnant and being given away free so anybody who wanted her could have "pick of the litter". We took her and let her have her kittens in a safe and loving foster home. Her kittens have now gone to their forever homes and Saphira is available to find her special home. Papi is a 4 year old beautiful tabby. He is 14 llbs of sheer love.

He is a special cat, a bit shy but so sweet and loving. Papi would never hurt anyone, including a child. He is a Big Baby who loves attention and will meow to let you know this. Meeko is a playful older kitten who we are hoping to place into his forever home. He is a sweet boy- a Siamese cross with beautiful blue eyes and a cream colored

short coat. Meeko has some digestive issues that require him to be on special food. He uses the litterbox just fine but his

special food will add probiotics for intestinal health. He loves other cats and dogs and will eagerly make friends in his new home. If you are interested in learning more about Meeko and giving this special

Rhubarb is sweet and affectionate. She has been bounced around over the past few months because of circumstances beyond her control. She is looking for a forever home where she can be lavished with love and attention. Rhubarb would do best as an only cat. HSUS UPDATES- MAINE

The Maine legislature has decided to not override Gov. LePage’s veto of LD 335, which would have prohibited any new pet shops from selling animals sourced from inhumane puppy mills. It also would have codified the puppy-sourcing policies of the state’s five existing pet stores, all of which have publicly condemned puppy mill cruelty. Katie Hansberry, Maine state director for The Humane Society of the United States, issued the following statement:“We applaud our legislators for taking the first steps in enacting LD 335, which would have granted greater protections for Maine’s animals, the small businesses that help our state thrive and the families seeking pets to welcome into their home. However, we are disappointed that legislature was unable to override Gov. LePage’s veto. Passing this bill would have made Maine the fourth state in the nation to restrict where pet stores acquire their animals.”

Ke$ha Encourages Guiltless GlamAnimal isn’t just the name of recording artist Kesha’s debut album. It also describes one of her great passions. She’s previously proven her concern for our fellow creatures by serving as Humane Society International’s first global ambassador, and she’s more recently confirmed that commitment by starring in a PSA and print ad promoting HSUS and HSI’s Be Cruelty Free campaign. In 2013, The HSUS honored her with the Wyler Award, which recognizes a celebrity or public figure for increasing awareness of animal issues via the media.“Advocating for animals is second nature to me," Kesha said in response to the honor. "My affinity with animals and the natural world inspires me and my music. I don't understand how anyone can justify abusing or exploiting animals, and as long as it continues, I intend to keep talking about it."Kesha’s goal is to encourage respect and compassion for animals nationally and around the world. As part of the Cruelty-Free 2013 campaign, Kesha called on the EU to carry out a ban on the sale of cosmetics tested on animals.
