Where there is no Vision, the people

perish.

Have you ever been caught in between? That is the way May and June feels like. We have almost finished the Capital Campaign, but not quite, as we will receive the First Fruits offering on June 12. As the funds are received, Church Council will direct the order in which the projects are to be completed. We will have finished the campaign, but have not yet begun the projects that will touch more people with the love of Jesus. So we are in between. Every kid lives for summer break, and they have time to play, enjoy friends and go on vacation with family. This is their in-between time between school work. Speaking of vacation—for most of us, vacation is not vacation, it is just a break in between work. We leave work for a vacation, and when we return, the stack of stuff on our desks is still there and is piled even higher with the new stuff that needs to get done. I realize that most of our lives are lived “in between.” We are working for something in the future (retirement, promotion, new child, home or job) and we also remember how things used to be. We

A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was an influential fig-

ure in the establishment of Father's Day. Her father raised

six children by himself after the death of their mother. This

was uncommon at that time, as many widowers placed their

children in the care of others or quickly married again.

On July 19, 1910, the governor of the U.S. state of Wash-

ington proclaimed the nation’s first “Father’s Day.” Howev-

er, it was not until 1972, 58 years after President Woodrow

Wilson made Mother’s Day official, that the day became a

nationwide holiday in the United States.

The school year has ended, and we have had lots of fun activities. We reviewed what we

learned in class, and Dr. Joe gave us the last lesson about Jesus. We learned that “this is

the day that the Lord has made, and we rejoice and are glad in it,” no matter what the fu-

ture brings us. The SBUM-Preschool class of 2016 sang patriotic songs in their graduation

program the last day of school. Summer is the time for summer camp, then cleaning, reor-

ganizing and getting ready for a new school year.

DINING OUT in JUNE 2016

Our friends, Laura and Loren Greenspan proprietors of BANANA RIVER CAFÉ are looking for-

ward to us patronizing their restaurant during the month of JUNE. This “Restaurant of

Choice” is located on S. Patrick Drive, just south of SBUMC in the Lori Lane strip mall. Their

hours are 7 am to 2:30 pm, Tuesday through Sunday. Their selections vary every day. They

have delicious homemade soups, quiches, sandwiches and wraps. Their breakfast menu is extensive and crea-

tive . . . specialty omelets and their yummy chocolate chip pancakes, to name a few.

Make sure to tell your server that you are from the church and write SBUMC on your bill. Our church receives

10% from the restaurant and that goes towards the Capital Campaign.

BEACHSIDE GRILLE also supports our church all the time. So, please thank them and write SBUMC on your bill.

Thank you for supporting the Dining Out Program that helped with the kitchen renovation and is now helping

finance the Fellowship Hall improvements.

Music Ministry News

Our Chancel Choir is "on break" during the month of June. They will have the opportunity to sit with their families during worship services and participate "pew-side". These faithful folk rehearse weekly to present beautiful music for meaningful worship. If you get a chance, say "thank you" to our singing saints, as I'm sure they will appreciate it. The choir will resume in leading worship on Sunday, July 3, 2016. Sharon Maslin, Choral Director

United Methodist Children’s Home The Florida United Methodist Children's Home recently announced that Becky Dotson, President is leaving the home. They also announced that they are opening a Broward County Foster Care office in July. The Chil-dren's Home is a safe haven for many children who have been removed from their homes. The staff at the Children's Home provide support, care and guidance for these children. The Children's Home shared an article in Life written by Amma Mante, titled, 8 Things All Kids In Foster Care

Want People To Know. Mante notes in this article that there are 400,000 children in the United States in foster care. She believes that the young people in foster care are heroes who had to pack up their whole world in a trash bag and often have to live with people who are strangers to them. Over half of foster children are minorities and a disproportionate amount are from impoverished families. However, many foster children have middle class backgrounds. Foster children often feel anger toward their broken, abusive parents, but they do not stop loving their parents. Foster children are in foster care due to the actions of the adults in their lives. Foster children have dreams and ambitions and need someone to provide support, guidance, and care. The foster care system is not working for many of the children. Foster children experience the same issues and problems as other children. One-fifth of the children in foster care are adopted. Many of the other chil-dren in foster care want to be reunified with their parents or stay with their foster family long term. Fos-ter children are young people who have experienced foster care and have their own feelings, weaknesses, strengths, gifts, talents, fears, aspirations, and responses to issues. Thank you for your support of the Florida United Methodist Children's Home. Patsy Countryman

Prayer Room

When we made phone calls to ask you to pray for our church during the Capital Campaign, we also asked if you or some-one you knew was in need of prayer. Those prayers were folded over and placed on a cross. The cross was moved to our Prayer Room in May.

Every month a SBUMC member volunteers to take some time once a week to lift up the people who have asked for prayer. We also give praise for prayers that were answered. Please consider signing up to help in the Prayer Room for a month on the “Let’s Connect” in the bulletin, call the office, or talk to Ada Fields, Lil Moore or Pat Hunter.

Clean Water Around the World

On June 26, the Missions Committee will be asking for donations for UMCOR's Water, Sanita-

tion and Hygiene (WASH) program. Around the world, 668 million people lack access to

clean drinking water with even more lacking access to water for agriculture and other house-

hold tasks to meet everyday needs. UMCOR helps communities rehabilitate existing water

infrastructure or develop new sources of clean water, such as wells or spring protection. When safe

sources are not available, UMCOR partners may help families access water filters and adopt new behav-

iors for treating their water such as solar disinfection or boiling. They estimate that for every $1 given,

$4.30 is saved in increased productivity and decreased health care costs. Water projects are ongoing in

North and South America, Africa, and Asia. Every dollar you give will go directly to these projects. Wa-

ter is a most basic need, so please give generously. Ann Montgomery

FOCUS ON CUBA Pastora Beatriz is quite a seamstress! She has been wanting to make some new dresses for the liturgical dance team and was able to use some of the funds we raised to buy the material. She and the ladies of the dance team are very grateful! As funds become available, she will continue making dresses for the rest of the ladies on the team. Would you be willing to head up an eyeglass ministry? So many of our people in Cuba need glasses & they just aren't available. We could ask for donations of used glasses if someone is willing to find a cooperative optician to give us the prescriptions & coordinate this ministry. I travel to Fort Lauderdale every 2 to 3 months to send packages through the CubaPak agency

and would be able to send glasses as well. Please consider if this is an area in which you would like to serve. We continue to send over-the-counter medications through CubaPak and are always happy to receive your donations. On our trip last December, we carried the maximum allowable 40 lbs of meds. It was all greatly appreciated, but in reality, it was only a drop in the bucket. It is such a great need. Some of you have asked if the recent visits by such "celebrities" as President Obama and Mick Jagger show that Cuba is opening up and providing economic and social benefits to the daily lives of the Cuban people. In truth, historic visits, such as that of the Pope, have had little impact on the people of Cuba, other than an intangible one of renewed hope. Our people in Mir have not seen any changes in their daily lives. They still spend most of their day figuring out how they will feed their family their next meal. But there are some hopeful signs. We can now send mail directly to Cuba. In addition, commercial flights have been approved. The hope is that this will bring the price of air travel down to more manageable levels. If that happens, I encourage you to consider traveling to Mir to meet our brothers and sisters. Would you like to go in October or November when it's a tad less hot? If so, our Team needs to be formed in June as it takes three months to get a religious visa. To travel in October, visas must be requested in July. Let's do it!
