Happy New Year and Welcome to 2013!

In the midst of work and holiday shopping, I hope you took the time to enjoy creating lasting memories with family, friends and sorors. The holiday season is always a time of food, fun and fellowship. I hope sorors who attended the Progressive Dinner that the hospitality committee planned on Saturday, December 15, 2012 left with a “warm fuzzy” feeling inside by the festive songs, décor and sisterly love

that was shared at each house.

As we embark upon the beginning of 2013, I challenge you to reflect on your experiences last year. Think about how you have grown and identify areas that need to be nurtured or further developed. As I sit and reflect about our Centennial year I think about how grateful I am for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; and the impact that over 250,000 women have made in communities around the globe. Our 22 founders have blessed US with an opportunity to be a beacon of hope for those in need and for that I am thankful.

This year will be an unforgettable year celebrating 100 years of sisterhood, scholarship and services. Of course, the Farwest Region kicked off the celebration starting with a float in the 124th Tournament of Roses Parade. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. made history as the 1st African American Greek letter organization to have a float in the parade. Thank you to all the Chapter sorors and Academy and GEMS participants that volunteered their time and energy decorating the float. A big Delta hug to Sorors Adriene Gray, Denise Dowdy and Geneva Dowdy for walking in the parade (You looked great!).

January 2013 - 2 -

On January 1, 2013 LBA represented with class and elegance as we celebrated the New Year at the Hollywood Gala at the Nokia Club. There were lights, stars, ice sculptures and great entertainment. We were graced with the presence of Dr. Betty Shabazz’s daughter and reminded that “If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough”. Everyone looked fabulous and it was a red carpet affair celebrating the accomplishments of those in the arts.

Sorors, we have been busy working hard for DST and there is much work still to be done even as we celebrate our Centennial year. So, I challenge you to remember our JEWELS. Take a jewel and exercise at least one daily as we enter into this centennial year.

Sorors, we made it….100 years in the BEST sorority there is! Get ready to celebrate with Founder’s Day in D.C., the Re-enactment of the Women’s Suffrage March and of course the National Convention in D.C. in July 2013. I am elated to share this experience with you and know that our 22 Founders are smiling down with pride.

Yours In Delta,

Give the gift of gratitude. It’s a priceless gift that can last a lifetime. Let’s show our gratitude and get ready for a year like no other in 2013.

As we enter into the holiday season, take a moment to ask yourself “What am I Grateful for?”

Sorors many of you took a moment to answer this question and responded with wonderful heart moving answers such as:

I am GRATEFUL for all of the great people I have met and things I've been able to experience in this last year. God truly showed up and showed out!!

I am so grateful for waking up EVERYDAY in my right mind and in good health; I'm grateful for my best friend and my soul mate-my husband Douglas, who loves me unconditionally; I am grateful for my beautiful, strong, determined and talented daughters and nieces who continue to seek God in all their endeavors. Most importantly, I am grateful for the relationship I have with my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! To God be ALL the glory! I am grateful that I know the grace, love, forgiveness, healing power and mercy of God. For without knowing, feeling and experiencing his presence & works, I would be lost and alone. I am grateful that he allowed my mama in my life as long as he did. She was a wonderful person I was blessed to have her as my mother. I am Grateful for so many blessings.

I am grateful for family, friends, my sorority, life, and love.

For my health and the health of those I love.

I am grateful that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. I am grateful to know that I am grateful! I am grateful that Pres. Obama was re-elected.

I'm Grateful for my family, friends, sorority sisters and God in my Life! There are so many blessings to be thankful for- too many to count, even those "TESTS” that God has made into TESTIMONIES. Learning not to take anything for granted because GOD is in control. I'm going to sit back, be thankful and ENJOY all the blessings that life brings.

I am GRATEFUL for how God has blessed me with the desires of my heart, how he has brought me through many storms in life and how he continues to bless me with love, laughter & joy everyday of my life –

Family, friends and good health

Sorors, be grateful....always!!! I know it can be hard sometimes, but the Word of God says: "In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." We have got to trust in God and rely totally on him!!! As you reflect on all that you are Grateful for this season; may there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith in yourself and in others. May you use the gifts that you have received and pass on the love that has been bestowed on you! May you be content with yourself just the way you are. Let this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us."

Chaplain Dowdy

These children, despite being abandoned by their families, sexually and physically abused, were filled with love and gratitude. We played games, colored, danced, painted nails, braided hair, etc.

All the owners, their "mamas and papas", treated them like they are their own children. They never call the children orphans and they do not live in an orphanage because that's their home and they are family. Each owner states all the glory is given to God for supplying what they need to house 110, 60 and 35 children. The organization that coordinated the event is ChangeFire meaning, to ignite change. They are raising funds for a solar water heating project to help lower the cost for the orphanage’s water needs which in turn will provide more money to get more children off the streets and an organic farm which will also provide more resources for them. A very big THANK YOU to the sorors of the Long Beach Alumnae Chapter who donated $500 of the $775 in total I raised for this cause. So not only did we work but we played too. We stayed at a rustic beach front hotel (Hotel La Fonda) with a lot of old Mexican charm. Now if you are used to luxurious accommodations this place is not for you. I however loved it. The food is GREAT!!!!!!!!!!! We danced to a live band and going to sleep to the sounds of crashing waves is not too bad either. This trip is definitely worth repeating and there are 95 pictures on the Yahoo Groups site for you to enjoy. Thank you for allowing me to represent LBAC on this wonderful trip!!!!!!!!!!!!

Baja Mexico Mission Trip July 14-16, 2012

A total of 40 volunteers visited three orphanages, two on Saturday, Casa Sion and Casa de Paz, and one on Sunday, Casa Eben-Ezer. The children were so excited to see us that they greeted us at the gate as we pulled up. Immediately after getting off the bus we were filled with hugs and kisses.

Long Beach Alumnae Goes to Kenya

As part of our International Awareness and Involvement programs, the Long Beach Alumnae Chapter visited and donated books to an orphanage in Mombasa, Kenya. Fifty books were hand delivered to the children of the Likoni AIDS Orphanage Center in Mombasa, Kenya. The orphanage was founded in the year 2000 by Reverend Ernest Ombeva, a Baptist minister, to house, clothe and educate children who have been orphaned due to the death of their parents from the AIDS virus. Children range in age from pre-school to high school. Since inception, three children have graduated and are currently in university. The books were presented on December 1, 2012, World AIDS day. A library will be started with the donated books. To see more or make a donation to the orphanage, go to http://www.likoniaidsorphanage.org/.

Before visiting the orphanage, we attended a Worlds AIDS Health day program in Mombasa. The theme was: “Getting to Zero”. Zero new infections, zero HIV-related deaths and zero discrimination for those infected with the disease. We brought greetings from the Sister Cities and voiced our support for the fight against AIDS and HIV.

We also met with the Mayor of Mombasa, Ahmed Mohdhar. We then toured the Gangoni Clinic. The clinic is an important resource for the diagnosis and treatment of people with AIDS and related illnesses like tuberculosis. The Long Beach Sister Cities Association recently donated a water purifier, making clean water available at the clinic.

The Physical and Mental Health Committee was busy in the month of November. The committee coordinated two walks and our annual Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway.

November 10, 2012 – St. Mary’s Walk for Diabetes

Sorors from Long Beach Alumnae co-sponsored the 2nd Annual Diabetes walk with St. Mary’s Hospital. Sixteen sorors ran and walked the track at Long Beach Poly High School. The chapter worked a booth and provided information on diabetes prevention as well as healthy lifestyle choices. A donation of $100 was made to St. Mary’s on behalf of the chapter. Thanks to all of the sorors who participated in the walk and a special shout out to the event coordinator, Patricia Owens.

Rainy weather did not stop Long Beach Alumnae sorors from walking to support the St. Jude Give Thanks Walk. The event was once again held at the Westfield Mall in Culver City. The chapter donated $100 to St. Jude from the Physical & Mental Health committee’s budget. Seven sorors from the chapter joined other sorors from across the southern California area to participate in the 5K walk. Our Regional Director, Soror Sandra Johnson, led the way!

Page 10: The Violet - January 2013 v. 3.2

After the walk, our day wasn’t over. For the third year in a row, Long Beach chose Andy Street apartment residents as the recipients of 25 Thanksgiving dinner baskets. Eighteen Sorors and Academy girls gathered to assemble the baskets and pass them out to Andy St. residents. Sorors also donated items for the baskets. The balance needed to complete the dinners was purchased from the committee budget (approx. $125). Our baskets contained all of the “sides” needed for Thanksgiving dinner. A local charity donated Ralph’s gift cards to allow residents to purchase turkeys. Baskets included: stuffing, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, green beans, yams, marshmallows, cornbread and cranberry sauce. Yum! Thanks to Soror Sheena Martin for coordinating our efforts with Andy St. Director, Laverne Duncan.

Four More Years

Well the elections are done. We have a 2nd term African-American in the White House, our First Black woman District Attorney, and our much-loved Soror, Representative Marcia L. Fudge, has been elected to chair the Legislative Black Caucus for the next two years. Voters said Yes to stronger human trafficking laws (a win for women of all ages), No to ending the California death penalty, No to genetically engineered food labels, and Yes to modifying the Three Strikes law. So what does this all mean to you? Do you know how your districts have

changed, what new politicians were elected to your residential address, or how the voting make-up of the House of Representatives will affect you for the next four years?

Regardless to the political temperament brewing locally and nationally, how you fair in this and any economy depends largely on if you pay attention. Be a good steward of your funds. Take time out to keep up with the issues that will affect you, your family, and your community. Don’t just talk about it, do something about it, whatever it may be. Let your voice be heard over the next four years. Make a plan for giving your time, sharing your resources, and saving for your future. Take charge and control over your life and your future. Be a part of your grater community. Help make living a little better for those less fortunate than you. Take an active role in protecting the poor, low, and middle class families. Be ready to sup at the table with a dish you helped prepare. As I shared in a quote from a commentary by Jerome Horton, Chairman of the California Board of Equalization, at a meeting earlier in the year, “If you are not AT the table you are probably ON the menu”. Don’t close your eyes to the political landscape around you and wake up surprised one day when you’ve been eaten up. We have a responsibility and an obligation to exercise care and concern over the communities we have entrusted ourselves to. Remember the words of our dear Delta Oath. We are Delta Women – Yes We Are!

LBAC Shows Up and Shows Out

A very huge thank you to all our sorors who have taken an active role in increasing Long Beach Alumnae Chapter’s social action agenda and community awareness during the first quarter of this chapter year. We are strengthening our position in the community, visibly showing our RED, and making a positive impact all around the City of Long Beach. In September, we participated in the Coastal Clean-up and collaborated with Zeta Rho Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity for voter registration in the Northpoint Homes residential complex. In October, we successfully conducted voter registration at all six LBUSD local High School Back to School Nights and collaborated with Mu Chi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity - CSULB at the Camelitos Public Housing residential complex. As we transitioned into November, LBAC sorors made their mark all over social networking media sites sharing positive messages and relevant information with at least 273,512 contacts. We have laid a good foundation for the years ahead. Amazing sorors! What a way to begin the Centennial Sorority Year. I am sure our illustrious and beloved 22 Founders are smiling down on Long Beach Alumnae Chapter and saying “well done sorors”.

Page 14: The Violet - January 2013 v. 3.2

Planning for Long Term Care Sorors came out and we successfully raised $1000!!!

It's all about the plan! Do you have a plan? Long-term care is defined as anything over 90 days. Most baby boomers are covered by Medicare. Did you know it takes 72 hours in the hospital to get Medicare? And although Medicare will cover up to 100 days, the average claim is 21 days. And you must be getting better! If you are not getting better it is called custodial care, And you will not be covered. Questions to consider:

1. Do you believe you could live a long life? 2. Do you understand that needing care over an extended period of time is a family issue, therefore requiring a plan to protect the family? Facts: -83% of caregivers are helping relatives.-Two thirds of caregivers are women. The first step is to check your plan. Check your disability and coverage provided by your employer. Some employers provide group disability if not there is state disability which covers 55% of your income. State disability will last up to one year. If you have group disability the percentage varies but once you retire it's gone! When getting a policy there are five crucial periods. 1. Benefit period.2. Elimination Period.3. Daily Benefit4. Benefit Triggers 5. Inflation Protection. Statistics show that we as women will either provide care for a family member or loved one who is in need of long-term assistance Or we will be in need of long-term care ourselves. If you don't have a plan make a plan!

November’s Winner: Soror LaShana Tyler!!!

October’s Winner: Soror Cheryl Melton!!!

I have many memorable experiences. Some you might have heard about already, but I say this as humbly as I know how, in fact, it brings tears to my eyes to think of what the Lord has allowed me to experience!!! Here are just a few:

•As an undergrad, I attended my 1st Regional Conference in Chicago (1970), and who should we meet standing in front of our hotel, but Soror National Vice President Lillian Benbow (wearing her signature black-rimmed glasses of course. She was so cordial & gracious & down to earth! We were too excited!!!•I had the privilege and honor of attending a National Convention when Founders Winona Cargile Alexander, Bertha Pitts Campbell & Naomi Sewell Richardson where in attendance.•I marched in DC in 1981 at the same event as Soror Founder Bertha Pitts Campbell. •I had the privilege of riding on the same elevator and having a brief conversation with Founder Bertha Pitts Campbell (she was wearing pantyhose with the Delta symbols near the ankle area ).

• I had the honor of serving Soror Dorothy I. Height dinner at the repast of Past National President Geraldine P. Woods. I was asked to do so my National President (at the time) Marcia Fudge. I was her Dean of Pledges when she was a Pyramid and I worked on all of her national campaigns. I even recruited Sorors Geneva Ray & Julie Johnson to do so, too!

• When I was in DC for President Obama's first Inauguration, I attended the Special Open House at our National Headquarters! Upon leaving, I ended up on the same elevator as Past National President Frankie Muse Freeman. (She was our National President when I became a Delta.)

• I wrote a letter of recommendation for Suzzanne Douglass on(actress on The Parent Hood, two time Image Award Winner and most recently appeared on The Good Wife) becoming a Honorary Delta.

My most Memorable Delta Experience as I enter our Centennial Year is when I met Past National President Dorothy Height at the convention in Las Vegas. She was getting in the car leaving and I pushed my way past security and asked her for a picture. She was so nice and took the picture with me. She chuckled as I ducked past security too. LOL
