Club News:

Year End Meetings There will be no meetings in December, giving all our members the chance to focus on family and festive

activities. The Committee wishes all members a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.

The next Committee Meeting will be on 11 January and General Meeting on 18 January 2013.

Annual General Meeting Our AGM was held in conjunction with the October General Meeting. See the back page of the newsletter for

from Steve Muscat as the Club Plate Registrar. Members should contact Austin by phone on 0407 395 637, or

email [email protected] prior to undertaking any trip other than a short test run.

Steve Muscat becomes Major Events Co-ordinator.

Also, Bruce Munro has taken over the newsletter mail-out job.

“Clarendon Classic” Rally Our recent rally was a huge success, thanks in no small measure to the boost from the Kenworth truck display.

It resulted in well over double the numbers through the gate, and the chance to get our hobby before a much

bigger audience. Thanks too for all who contributed their time and effort in organising it beforehand and

during the event. It has set the Club up to be able to invest in a number of improvements, which are detailed in

the meeting minutes.

Coming Events

On November 9-10 is the Farming Small Areas Expo sponsored by “The Land” newspaper at

Hawkesbury Showground. This is one of the Club’s fixtures and we are guaranteed a good level of interest in

our display.

Another event that draws many members is the Taralga Heritage Rally on 17 & 18 November at

Taralga Showground. There is excellent camping and a guarantee of diverse exhibits from the southern areas

including the south coast.

Our second Ploughing Day, this time for all comers, is being organized by Col Fotheringham and

Steve Brown in the UWS grounds at Richmond on 24 October . This is when those who had a go at Col’s

place previously can show their new skills. Register with Steve on 0408 475 465. We will be using our

portable loading ramp at this site. It is a bit steep, but works quite well as long as one major requirement is

observed. It must be chained on both sides to the truck being unloaded or loaded. Failure to do this could

result in the ramp and truck becoming separated, with possibly disastrous results.

We plan a Christmas get-together on Saturday 1 December. See above info on Page 1.

Then on January 2-6 is the 5th

Annual Great Snowy River Tractor Stampede, being organised by the

Bega & District Historical Machinery Club. It is advertised on the TOMM Website, and is starting and

finishing at Candelo, not Bombala as previously noted here. This means travelling from Cooma down Brown

Mountain. For those not familiar with this road, the descent is 10Km at an average gradient of 1 in 10, which

may deter some (such as the writer!).

Next up is the inaugural rally, “Machinery in Motion” being conducted on January 19-20 by the

Central Coast Machinery Club at Gosford Showground. Plenty of camping is available and set-up is on the

previous day. A good number of SAMCI members can be expected to participate.

January 26 is Australia Day and we are again invited by Bankstown Council to display at Garrison

Point, Georges Hall. As this attracts a good donation from Council, we need to put on a worthy display.

Ploughing Day Report – by Ian Browning (photos by Eddie Peterson)

It turned out quite a pleasant day on Sunday 14 October after the dramatic chill that had swept through on the

previous Friday. It was an early start to get to Col Fotheringham’s at Freemans Reach, but in the end there

was plenty of time to start up and unload the McDonald tractor, my single cylinder entry, and fit in a cuppa

before getting down to business.

Eight tractors, two with trailed ploughs, the rest with 3-point linkage ploughs, got stuck into a couple of areas

Col designated. Jim Bew and Stewart Richmond were able to advise on set-up, but my plough, borrowed from

Col, did a pretty good job without adjustment other than offsetting the drawbar. If you want to see (and hear!)

a REAL TRACTOR in action go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zt6VojckCdg.

We completed ploughing up the area available, and did quite a creditable job, though Hart-Parr steering leaves

a bit to be desired! The McDonald cleaned it up though!

Being so involved, I did not take photos, but some taken by Eddie Peterson are shown below. There were

other videos taken, and we hope the opportunity to show these will come up at the Club’s Xmas Social.

This is the second Cranky Handle held at this site since they had to move from Morpeth but it is the first I have attended there. It is a very different venue but no doubt the regular crowds will find it again before too long. It is the most unusual rally I have ever attended and I have been to a few. At this venue it is the spectators and vendors who are within the compound and all the exhibitors and their facilities are outside. - Very convenient for us and it seemed to work well. SAMC attendance was down this year as many regulars were off to Lake Goldsmith but those who attended had a good time. The weather was perfect on Saturday and cloudy but still pleasant with an occasional cool breeze on Sunday. Photo Above: Part of the SAMC display on Sunday with Ian and Sue Dillon's Champion driving a Burt drill, Georgie & my Glasgow, Jacobson and Pulsometer pump and Meik & Nicole Groger's Cushman and Godwin pump. Peter Eggers was nearby with a United. Coral and Adam Draper were involved with a half size steam traction engine most of the time.

Some excerpts from the General Meeting held on 19th Oct 2012. Business arising from Minutes of Committee Meeting:

- It has been decided to purchase a new BBQ from Bunnings.

- The proposed purchase of a 20 or 40 ft container for storage was discussed further, prices being

$2800 or $3200 delivered. There was also a container prize on Facebook. It was agreed we stood

little chance of winning this, so it was agreed to proceed with a 40 ft one.

- A star picket driver will be purchased closer to the next rally.

- NHMA has received a submission from Tasmania to host the 2015 National Rally. Also of note is

that they have received three claims on insurance since July 31.

- A working bee is to be organized to lop trees again threatening the power lines, fit a whirly-bird

to the Club shed roof, and fit a couple of ceiling fans inside the shed. L Franks offered the use of

a scissor lift, and Dave Chapman also has one.

- The ploughing event at UWS is awaiting approval of the SWMS document prepared by S Brown

and S Muscat. There are a lot of matters to organize such as fencing for spectators, portable

loading ramp (needs a tyre repaired), toilet, and restoration afterwards.

- New rally signs and banners are being purchased.

- The suggestion of Barlowe and Star engines as features for the next rally was rejected. David

Brown tractors was accepted and other suggestions were Working Engines, and Perkins (80

years)

Registrar: S Muscat reported that there were 105 vehicles on the Club Register, however a number still

have not sent him paperwork. There was some discussion on plate surrender, noting it remains RMS

policy that they own the plates, even though they no longer pursue recovery. It was agreed that a letter

should be sent to those who have not returned plates after lapse of registration.

UWS Ploughing Day: S Brown reported that although we are awaiting for a response on the OH&S

matters, overall it looks promising. A show of hands indicated 6 or so present would be participating.

No enquiries from other parties have been received.

Col Fotheringham reported the ploughing day at his place was excellent with 8 tractors participating.

He declined the Club’s offer of reimbursement of expenses.

General Business:

- The Club has 331 members, and the Rally had 1600 through the gate, 700 last year.

- Printing of the newsletter in colour was discussed and it was agreed we should proceed. B Apps

suggested we may be able to obtain some advertising sponsorship to help defray the cost.

- A Ransomes crawler with several implements is for sale. To be placed in the newsletter.

- The Christmas Social on December 1 was discussed. Members are invited to bring a display

item, and we will show photos of ploughing events, Lake Goldsmith etc. Shane Djuric offered to

provide a spit roast with salad at a cost of $5.00 per head. His offer was accepted. Members to be

asked to bring a dessert plate. Numbers are needed for catering, so it will be advertised in the

November newsletter, with registrations to Alison White or via the Club website.

- T Brodie stated that the lights in the shed need to be rearranged to improve lighting over the

stove etc. Some additional ones are needed. A volunteer electrician is needed.

- Discussion on the container. Trees have to be removed to accommodate it along the boundary

with the Showground. The Showground Manager has been approached and has no problem as

long as it is maintained. S Warby to look at prospects he knows & for one with side doors.

- Peter Jones has picked up Noel Wenzel’s engine. It is his first engine.

- S Muscat suggested we set up a coordinating committee for the UWS ploughing day. S Brown, C

Fotheringham and S Richmond were nominated.

- L Franks agreed to prepare a flier for the 2013 “Clarendon Classic” and P Eggers will print 500.

T Brodie will send the file to L Franks.

- M Williamson has brought paint for the loading ramp and tractor pull sled. A working be is

needed to do some repairs and preparation, and the painting. It is a project for next year.

- T Brodie emphasized that registrations for Mudgee should mention the Sydney Club. I

Browning stated he had secured an invitation for the heritage group he is associated with to

display, enabling them to be covered for insurance. They will be displaying with SAMCI.

- Prize draw for the evening went to I Dillon with # 47. There will be no General Meeting in

December.

Bidwill Blokes Day – report and photos by Stephen Gummerson

On Wednesday, August 29, we were once again invited to the “Blokes Breakfast” at Chifley College at

Bidwill. It was an early start, but was all over by about 10.00am. It was an opportunity to show to a youth

audience and their dads. There were wood turners, music, rock climbing, the Police & Fire Brigade brought

vehicles, as did locals who had hot rods and Harleys. SAMC was represented by Ian Dillon, Ian Browning,

and Lawrie Winney who brought their engines. It was a good chance to try to inspire teenagers and local men

in mechanical history. The fact is that the antique machinery run is one of the best ways to initially engage

with the public.

Below: Ian Browning’s Mordiesel. Ian Dillon’s display engine.

Paul Schembri’s hot air engine – report and photos by Ian Browning I have recently visited Paul’s place a couple of

times, and saw the progress he had made on

restoring a 6” Rider-Ericsson hot air engine. This

engine will complement the 8” model he previously

restored. However, he had reached an impasse as

the replacement piston castings came out undersize,

so he could not use them. He had hit on the idea of

putting an engine sleeve on the outside, so the other

day I came along in time to see the final stages of

turning down the old piston and the fitting of the

sleeve, which is of the right outside diameter. It

appeared to be successful, so Paul can now invest in

the other sleeve (not cheap) and repeat the process for the other piston. Above: Turning the old piston

Using the sleeve will save a lot of additional machining which would have been necessary if the new castings

had been used. Here are some photos.

Below:Heating up the sleeve. Below:Helper Tony Cassar finishing off. Below:The 6” machine minus pistons

Tests on Penetrating Oil- For all of you Mechanic's and Self doer’s out there.

This was in one of the Military Vehicle Club newsletters.

Here is an interesting article submitted by Bob Muller for our members’ consideration:

Recently “Machinist Workshop Magazine” did a test on penetrating oils. Using nuts and

bolts that they ‘scientifically rusted’ to a uniform degree by soaking in salt water, they then

tested the break-out torque required to loosen the nuts. They treated the nuts with a variety

of penetrants and measured the torque required to loosen them.

This is what they came up with: Nothing: 516 lbs WD-40: 238 lbs;

PB Blaster: 214 lbs; Liquid Wrench: 127 lbs,

Kano Kroil: 106 lbs and (ATF)/Acetone mix (50/50): 50 lbs.

This last “shop brew” of 50% automatic transmission fluid and 50% acetone appears to beat

out the commercially prepared products costing far more.
