Literacy

In Literacy this Term the children will be learning 7 new sounds:Week 1- RevisionWeek 2- “k” sound. Character: Kicking KingWeek 3- “b” sound. Character: Bouncing BenWeek 4- “v” sound. Character: Vicky VioletWeek 5- “e” sound. Character: Eddy elephantWeek 6- “p” sound. Character: Peter PuppyWeek 7- “J” sound. Character: Jumping JimWeek 8- “w” sound. Character: Walter WalrusWeek 9- RevisionWeek 10-Revision

NewsThe literacy sounds detailed above are also the sounds that your child will use to direct their News choices. If your child has News on even weeks then their sounds will be k, v, p and w. If your child has News on odd weeks the sounds will be b, e, j. The items they bring in for News should be based around these sounds. In week 1, 9 and 10 the children have free choice of what to bring in as there is no specific sound for those weeks. You may also like to bring something in that relates to an interest that your child has or the current interest in the class.

Science and TechnologyDuring this term the children will explore where their food comes from. We will look at dairy foods and how they are packaged. The children will explore living things and what their basic needs are for survival. This will be supported by an excursion to Leppington Dairy Farm.

GeographyDuring Term 3 the children are encouraged to focus on their place in the world around them. This will incorporate people and community as well as the environment. The children will discover who can help us in our environment, including how to care for the environment.

Christian LivingIn Christian Living the children will discover some of the great stories from the Bible in the Old Testament. We will learn about Noah, Samuel, David and Jonah. Children will be encouraged to reflect on how these stories can impact their lives in times of strength and of need.

PDHPESafety will be the focus in this term’s PDHPE. The unit of work will include a variety of safety lessons on Bus Safety, Road/ Pedestrian Safety, Pet Safety, Road/Car Safety and Sun/Water Safety.

AbsenteesIf your child is absent from school, please use the Parent Portal (Edumate) on the Penrith Anglican College website to provide details as to why. This is now the preferred method to record absentee information and should be done within seven days of the day(s) missed. If you need any assistance with regards to this please speak with one of the Pre-K staff.

UniformsChildren will continue to wear the winter uniform this term. Please remember to pack your child’s hat each day as well as a spare bag of clothes including undies and socks. Please also check that all clothing items including hats are labelled with your child’s name.

Food in Pre-KPlease ensure that your child has recess, lunch and something healthy for crunch and sip. Last term lots of children were munching through most of their food by recess, so it’s best to pack more than less! Please avoid packing anything with nuts, seeds, Nutella or eggs as we may have children who are highly allergic to these.

Home Reading Diary The Home Reading Diary, similar to the Term One and Two Reading Diary, will be distributed by in Week One. At the back of the Term Three diary you will find an extra resource for your child to practice their tricky words. Again, as in Term Two, ‘take home decodable readers’ will be given out weekly.

Continue to read a storybook each day to your child and discuss the story, pointing out any new words to enrich their vocabulary. Spend time teaching your child nursery rhymes, songs and poems. Play language games. Talk about letters and sounds in the environment. When the weekly decodable readers are sent home, make sure that you spend time listening to your child read, providing support to help them apply their knowledge about sounds and letters to the text.

Our school uses PM Benchmarking and other equivalent assessment programs to track children’s reading progress. Students are not started on these levelled readers until they have been thoroughly checked as to whether they have competently and successfully grasped the alphabetic principle. Many Kindergarten children will not be able to use their decoding strategies to work out the words on the page yet as the words used in these levelled readers are either irregular (i.e. tricky words) or beyond the scope of their phonic knowledge at this point. They will need to look at the picture and have a guess from context to get to the word. These are strategies that InitiaLit does not teach or encourage. For this reason, many kindergarten children will not do well on that type of reader. Their progress is on more robust measures such as letter-sound knowledge and their ability to read and spell regular words and sentences. If they are tracking well on these measures, they are on track for learning to read. Over time, children will be able to pick up any book they choose and read it if they have the solid foundational skills in place first.

Seesaw AppThe app called Seesaw. has been so successful that we are now introducing it into the family setting in Term 3.

Seesaw gives your child a place to document their learning, be creative and learn how to use technology. It is a student driven digital portfolio of each child’s learning journey.

Seesaw provides students with the opportunity to photograph or film samples of their work and upload to a class account to be viewed by the class and teacher for feedback. More details will be given out regarding this exciting venture.

100 Days of Kindy CelebrationOur 100 Days of Kindergarten Celebration is in the first week back. As part of our celebration we are asking students to count and collect 100 small objects. These can be placed in a zip lock back or clear plastic container e.g. drink bottle. All objects in the bag should be the same and will be returned home following our fun learning activities. It is important that the bag or container is sealed, so please help your child choose and count 100 objects. Here are some collection ideas: 100 pieces of popcorn, 100 paper clips, 100 grains of rice. Please consider these items as suggestions only. We ask that you avoid objects that are sharp or that might cause allergies (such as peanuts) Students can also dress up for the day as a 100 year old person.

We look forward to another happy and productive term with you and your child/children.

Yours in Christ,Mrs Christine Belotti, Mrs Jessica Johnson and Mrs Joni ColemanKindergarten Teachers

The Vine - Start of Term 3 2019

Welcome back to Term Three in the Secondary School at the College. We trust all our families have enjoyed the opportunity to rest, relax and recharge over the holiday break. Last term was full of many learning opportunities and events for students to be involved in. Highlights included the fabulous Music Tour and more recently the College Dusty Boots Service Trip. Term Three will offer many wonderful opportunities for our students to stretch themselves in a range of skills academically, creatively and physically.
