Brows & Lashes

Internet searches assure me that no matter how over-plucked, over-waxed or over-groomed your eyebrows may be, there is hope still for beautiful, arched, perfectly coiffed speci-mens. The most extreme method might be an eyebrow transplant (yes really!), but there are other less drastic options!

Most of us ladies – and the odd gent too – need to lose a few hairs from the brow line. The easiest solution is tweezing away the stray hairs yourself, but the results are short-lived and the risk of creating the wrong shape is high. Better results can be achieved by a professional, with waxing and thread-ing methods achieving hair removal lasting around 4-6 weeks. Fair or very thin eyebrows may benefit from being tinted. Like hair dye, this changes the colour and lasts 4-6 weeks.

A popular look at the moment is HD (High Definition) Brows which focus on shape and design and promise to give you sleek, stylish brows like those enjoyed by the stars. A seven step process that includes a consul-tation followed by tinting, waxing, threading, tweez-ing, trimming and finishing with a pencil or brush to fill in any gaps, is described as more than just shaping or tidying but actual eyebrow artistry!

With your brows looking beautiful brows it’s time to move on to the eyelashes.

There are numerous mascaras around promising volume, length and thickness, and I can vouch for some of them actually work-ing! My daughter’s naturally

long lashes were taken to another level following the application of a

new mascara. But what else is on offer?

Tinting is an option if your lashes are particu-larly fair, and it’s not just for girls. I remember the difference it made to my friend’s son after his lashes were darkened. Curling makes straight lashes appear longer, and creates the illusion of wider, brighter, more feminine eyes. Lash-perming, which is best carried out by a professional, can make the results can last for six weeks, which is great for holidays or if you have any big events lined up.

Finally, how about having eyelash exten-sions? This is one of the UK’s fastest growing beauty treatments and involves gluing separate synthetic eyelashes to individual natural lashes to give a luscious, natural look. The amount of curl, length or thickness can vary according to your personal preference and the results last for 8-12 weeks depending on your natural lash growth cycle.

I was born with my dad’s eyebrows. Naturally thick, shapeless and unsightly, they looked like two caterpillars stuck to my forehead. At age twelve I followed the fashion of the day and plucked away until they were within a whisper of totally disappearing - and I was on the point of fainting! Today, my eyebrows are thin, shapeless and unsightly and I’m resigned to them looking that way forever. Or rather I was…

Brighter, longer, warmer days are always welcome as it puts a different perspective on daily life, but I’m sure you’ve been noticing more than just a change in the weather in Dunstable. Some of our key projects and developments are coming to fruition, such as the Priory View Independent Living Scheme, which opened recently, and has begun fulfilling one of our top priorities of helping older residents live longer more independent lives.Another major aim of great importance is to improve the health and wellbeing of people of all ages. That’s why I’m really excited about our proposals for a £20.1million com-prehensive redevelopment of Dunstable Leisure Centre, though I hesitate to call it that. Our ambition is to provide the town with much, much more than a leisure centre. It’s an innovative model that is completely different to anything we have done before in Central Bedfordshire. Rather than a refurbishment this will be a transformational project which, to all intents and purposes, will be a com-pletely new and bigger building. Only the pool tanks and sports hall structures will remain of the current building, as they were constructed so soundly, but everything else will be new, including the way it will appeal to the interests of a broader spectrum of the com-munity than it currently serves. We want to relocate Dunstable Library into the facility, as

well as Citizens’ Advice Bureau and various other services. With longer opening hours and greater flexibility, the bot-tom line is that it will be better value for you.So we are confident that the long-term benefits to Dun-stable will be more than outweighed by the short-term inconvenience. This redevelopment, however, will mean the leisure centre is closed for around 18-months. We understand this is not an ideal situation, but we looked into building a new centre elsewhere, though would not guarantee that the current one remains open as it is in such a poor condi-tion. The current location of the centre is another hugely important factor as it sits at the heart of the town’s cultural quarter and will contribute to the overall regeneration of the town centre. I can assure you that every step we’ve taken has been informed by our Leisure Strategy, which was published two years ago after extensive public consultation and is underpinned by studies, research and collaborative work-ing with partners and governing bodies, such as Sport England, to determine the needs of the community both now and in the future.I am therefore confident that what we are proposing is the best solution for all of our residents and will meet the needs of our current and growing population. I would stress that nothing has been decided yet. We are in consultation until July 8th and we are listening.

In 1981 Antonia Vassallo Todaro worked alongside her husband, Papa Carmelo, at the family Delicatessen, Carmelo’s Continental, on Midland Road Luton. Being a working mother, with a husband and four sons to feed, Mama Antonia relied on the traditional Italian recipes that had been passed down to her through the generations. With a little imagination and taking inspiration from her mother, Cira, and grandmother, also Antonia, she added her own twist to each recipe, developing her own menu and with it an idea to bring authentic Italian cuisine to the people of Dunstable. At 2pm on July 5th Mamma Antonia finished working at the Deli as usual. At 5pm, accompanied by eldest son Carmelo Jr., her idea became reality as she opened the doors to Dunstables first Italian Pizzeria, Sorrento Pizzeria, located at 204 High Street North where it has remained for the last 35 years. Despite having to wait several months for an alcohol licence - diners had to bring their own wine! - the restaurant and Antonia’s menu proved a resounding suc-cess, so much so that within a year of opening the family decided to extend into the cellar. Sorrento Ristorante was born, offering a full A la carte Menu, Italian English & French food served by silver service. It was another hit! It seemed the town had discovered a taste for this new cuisine and the restaurant rapidly gained a reputation for it’s quality food, affordable prices and large, tasty portions. The family are now proud to boast that they introduced the town to many of the dishes we’re used to being served in Italian restaurants today. In 1989 the pizzeria was renamed Donatello’s, the cellar became Grazianos and eventually son no. 2, Michele, took over as manager. Today Donatello’s is much the same and Michele, along with the rest of the family, strive to uphold many of the Italian traditions and values introduced by Antonia. The joy of serving top quality, homemade food in intimate and welcoming surroundings remains at the fore, If you

like traditional Italian this is still the place for you. Whilst Donatello’s today still has an unbeatable selection of traditional, homemade pizzas and pastas, Michele has moved with the times and ever changing tastes by creating many new signature dishes which have become customer favourites. The menu can accommodate most dietary needs, with a little prior notice, vegetarian and vegan dishes are a speciality and gluten free options are available if requested when you book. If it’s not on the menu, with a little notice Donatello’s can create almost any Italian dish so just ask! There truly is something to suit all tastes. In 1998 the family decided to expand the business and acquired a century old cottage, at 91 Dunstable Street in Ampthill, which on 28th October, after five gruelling months of refurbishment, opened it’s doors as a 30 seat restaurant. Through continued success the capacity at Donatello’s, Ampthill was extended to 80 diners, set over two floors in five private dining rooms. The building has retained all of its charm with period features including beams, fireplaces and low ceilings, all creating a cosy quaintness and typical Donatello’s atmosphere. The restaurant has the added bonus of a garden and Alfresco dining area for diners to enjoy during the summer. Michele has also made Donatello’s available for private functions and both restaurants can cater for most events, whether it be a birthday celebration, pre-booked lunch buffet, wedding reception and, in Ampthill, even garden parties. The experienced and friendly staff will be on hand to make any occasion one to remember.Keen to expand the business further, Michele introduced a take away and delivery service so you can now enjoy made to order, authentic Italian food - “a Donatello’s” - without having to leave the house (Ampthill offers pick-up service only). If you enjoy good food Donatello’s offers variety and versatility that only comes with 35 years of experience.Visit www.donatellospizzeria.co.uk for more information.

Vauxhall Male Voice Choir choir was born in 1943 during the grim and dark days of World War II when morale was at low ebb. The factory had been turned primarily to the manufacture of tanks and military vehicles and it was by way of an outlet from this travail that a singing group was formed. They were soon entertaining the troops by radio broadcasts and enter-taining locally in charitable concerts. Our history is long and littered with interesting stories and events; we have done most of the things, and more, ex-pected of a male voice choir! Participation in competitions including winning a prize at a Welsh eisteddfod, singing with famous massed military bands in the regular pageants held at the Luton Football Ground during the 1980s, TV

appearances, including Harry Secombe’s ‘Highway’ pro-gramme and travelling (usually each year) on away-trips to British and European towns and cities have all featured in the rich life of VMVC choris-ters past and present. The choir is currently 45-strong and sings now mainly for enjoyment and charitable causes. We are always keen to accept new members and regularly take steps by way of recruitment exercises to ensure the future of our organisation. We meet every Wednesday evening at 7.30pm for practice at St Mar-garet’s Church, Biscot Mill, Luton and newcomers will be made extremely welcome by our friendly members. Just turn up on a Wednesday or, alternatively contact Brian Matthews on 01525-841077.

Money Matters By Martin Lewis

Marriage Tax Are you married or in a civil partnership?

If so, is one of you a non-taxpayer, and the other paying

basic 20% tax? If you’ve just answered yes, then you’re

one of 4.1million couples due a free £212 a year.

This is all about marriage tax allowance, a tax-break introduced in April 2015. I was stunned to find out how few people know about it and the likelihood is you’re in the 80% who haven’t claimed it, so I’m going to tell you how.

Who can get it? You must be married or civil partners. If you’ve lived together for 20 years and have four kids and a dog, you are not eligible. This is a bit of social engineering by the government to have a reward for marriage in the tax system. One of you must be a non-taxpayer, i.e., usually earning less than £10,600, and the other needs to pay tax at the basic 20% rate, which is currently for those who earn under £42,385. You both must be under 80 (then there’s another tax break).Don’t overcomplicate this. Many people ask if they count as a non-taxpayer as “I’m a volunteer”, “I only work part time”, “I don’t work”. Stop it. Are you a UK resident who doesn’t pay income tax? If you are, you count – simple as that.

How does it work? The non-taxpayer can transfer £1,060 of their personal allowance – that’s the amount you can earn tax-free – to their partner.Imagine Tyrone earns £10,000 at a garage, and is a non-taxpayer. He can arrange for £1,060 of his tax-free allowance to be transferred to his wife Fizz. So that’s £1,060 of earnings she would’ve paid tax on at 20% that’s now tax free. As 20% of £1,060 is £212, that’s your gain.

How do you claim it? It’s a really simple process. The non-taxpayer should just go to www.gov.uk/marriage-al-lowance or call 0300 200 3300. You’ll need your national insurance numbers and some basic ID. Let me stress again though, it’s the NON TAXPAYER who must sign up – people

do it the other way round and then wonder why they’re rejected.

Do I get it every year? Yes, it’s done via a change in your tax code that remains, so it’s £212 a year gain every year and once you’ve applied it’s done automatically. If your circumstances change, you need to call up and tell them.

Can I backdate the claim? Yes, you can backdate for four years, but it only started on 6 April 2015 so of course you can’t go back further than that.

What if either or both of us are self-employed? It doesn't matter. As long as you fulfil the eligibility criteria above, you can apply. The only difference is if the recipient partner is in self-assessment, it will reduce their self-assess-ment bill.

What if I’m a non-taxpayer who doesn’t have £1,060 to pass across? It still works, it’s just a bit more complex if the non-taxpayer is earning just under the £10,600 thresh-old. This is because you have to transfer £1,060 of your allowance to take advantage – nothing more, nothing less.

So let’s do another example. Suppose Fred is a basic rate taxpayer married to Wilma who earns £10,000 a year, so she’s only got £600 left of her tax free allowance. She can still move £1,060 to Fred, so he gains £212 on that amount. That lowers her allowance to £9,540, but she earns £10,000 so she’ll pay basic 20% tax on the £440 – meaning she is £88 worse off. Overall, though they’re still up over £100. If you don’t get the maths, don’t worry, you’re always col-lectively up by doing this, so if you’re a non-taxpayer, even close to the limit it’s still worth applying.

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. A Pensioners View

Have your say{

Intergenerational Fairness?

This article deals with the above title and the original appeared in the 'The Message', a newspaper issued by the National Pensioners Convention, after

a statement from the conventions president, Ron Douglas. It needs to be read by all present pensioners and it may apply to future pensioners also.

'Intergenerational Fairness' is being presently dealt with by a government select committee from the Department Of Works and Pensions. Its members are looking at abandoning the 'triple lock' on the basic pension and means testing of the winter fuel allowance. The matter is being discussed when it is known where one in every three households have difficulty in meeting the payment of ever rising fuel bills, which reflects the statistic of 43,900 older people died from cold related illness last year - the highest figure for 15 years. The crux of the committee's work is to assess whether existing pensioners have enjoyed and accumulated much more housing and financial wealth, public service usage and welfare and pension entitlements than more recent generations can hope to achieve. The committee seems to have accepted the view that older people have been protected from austerity whilst the rest of society has had to pay.Older people are also being blamed for the fact

their homes have risen in value over the last 30 years, but the truth is, these rising home prices are due to lack of available homes and an economy driven by house price inflation. This appears to be a race to the bottom which helps no one and more or less condemns future generations to a lifetime of working longer, paying more and getting less when they eventually retire. An indictment of our society if we can not give younger people a secure and better future.

When I read the preceding article in 'The Message' I felt obliged to get it to a wider audience. It seems disgraceful to me that a government has to look at pensioners to face such draconian measures. I paid 50 years to a National Insurance and would expect that governments over this time could have set the National Insurance Fund at a price that could meet its obligations - they have failed to do so. The fund was always operating at a high surplus to requirements. The surplus could be used by the government in times of need and was repayable. What we as tax payers and National Insurance payers should demand of all governments is that the N.I. fund should be ring fenced and its in-clusive total fund should be used only for pension related purposes. The old mantra applies. We paid the insurance, we want that pension ring fenced now, so that insurance can be paid in full.

admitting 2 adults and 2 children to Chilfest on Friday 8th July.

C hilfest is a two day boutique music festival featuring original bands from the 80s . Held in the leafy and rural setting of Tring in Hertford-shire, with a capacity of 7,000 people for each

day, Chilfest provides festival goers with an intimate yet lively atmosphere. The custom-built Chilfest arena com-prises a top quality stage and sound rig, a wide variety of food and drink outlets and plenty of toilet facilities, providing all the ingredients for a great weekend of live music ... right on here our doorstep.Chilfest is the brain child of Tring resident Steve Butcher. As Managing Director of Universal Event Productions (UEP), Steve has provided event staging and rigs for a wide variety of top live events and music festivals. An 80’s music lover, he had the idea of bringing live music from original bands to the local area whilst at a friend’s barbecue, the seed for Chilfest was sown. The 15th anniversary of UEP gave Steve the chance to re-alise his dream when he decided to stage a concert for the local community to celebrate his business achieve-ments. Originally to be a one-off event, Steve set out to create a top quality music event with all proceeds going to local charity, Rennie Grove Hospice Care.In July 2013, the Inaugural Chilfest was staged at Pendley Meadow in Tring. Featuring a lively pop night on the Fri-

day, headlined by Little Mix, and a show-stopping line up of stars from the 80’s, including Tony Hadley, Rick Astley, Howard Jones, Midge Ure, Hazel O’Connor and Carol Decker on the Saturday. The event sold out to its 7,000 capacity. The quality of the production, which included some of the latest moving light and LED screen technologies, re-ceived many accolades and earned nominations in two categories at the 2013 UK Festival Awards. The success of the event encouraged Steve to hold Chil-fest again in 2014 This time plans evolved to include a Sunday afternoon with a more contemporary line-up for a younger audience. Over 15,000 people attended. In 2015, Pendley Meadow was once again filled to ca-pacity when, for the third year running, Chilfest rocked Tring with two spectacular nights of top quality music. This year saw, for the first time at Chilfest, a team of tal-ented performance interpreters who took to the stage with the bands and enthusiastically signed every single song for the benefit of the deaf community. Chilfest 2016 will take place on Friday 8th and Satur-day 9th July. once again, bringing two days of the very best sounds from the 1980s. This years line up includes UB40, Heather Small, The Human League, Chas and Dave, Tony Hadley and many more..

Want to try making your own face cream? Here is a basic recipe for a nourishing night cream that anyone can make at home to enjoy. What you’ll need...

This formula can be swapped with other oils. 90ml Coconut oil90ml Avocado oil150ml Rose water1oz Emulsifying wax30 drops Rose otto essential oil & 15 drops of Rose geranium essential oil (or frankincense)2 drops Vitamin E oil (a good antioxidant)

How to make...

Create two bain marie’s on your hob or stove. In one bain marie add your oils (and emulsifying wax) and in the other add your water. Heat both the oils and water to 70-75 C to kill any bacteria using a thermometer. Take both bowls off the stove and slowly add the oils to the water bowl. Using a hand held whisk beat until the oils have been blended with the rose water. Let it cool down and then add you essential oils and vitamin E oil and whisk again. If your mixture looks like it is splitting just whisk again until it cools. When cold, spoon into a sterilised jar and you’re done…Ta Dah. Label and date it and keep in the fridge. I tend to put it in a large pot in the fridge and then take out what I need in smaller pots for everyday use. It should last quite a while. Make sure you do a patch test before you put it on your face and always wear a sun screen.

I know it’s all a bit trendy at the moment but I love foraging. What do we mean by foraging? Some people get themselves all upset and see it as thieving from the environment and stripping it bare. I guess it all depends on whether you choose to see the glass half full or half empty. To be honest I can’t find anything negative about foraging if you’re a responsible individual. The benefits to both the mind and body are priceless. You’re outdoors inhaling the essence of the seasonal air while you exercise your body rambling around the urban and rural Bedfordshire landscape. There is nothing like the ‘feel good’ factor of being outdoors and having a purpose. The thing is when you’re engaged in looking for your fodder the familiar becomes unfamiliar. We create a new window to the world that explodes into a magical world of wonder. The everyday walk or stroll creates meaning. It is all about the knowledge. Once you have some knowledge of basic edibles roaming around your own garden, path, or dog walk things begin to happen. The insignificant becomes magnified and we look at the world differently…how cool is that? When you find an edible it’s such a rush without the chocolate and it is free. Whoa… Life just gets betterI become so immersed in the landscape I feel like I am in a living painting. I am the subject of my own painting unaware of my audience. I forget the world and my woes and the

focus of concentration is like meditating. I feel embodied to the landscape where I forget what my arms and my legs are doing…yep it’s pure bliss. See the outdoors (both urban and rural) as a free supermarket. I only pick what I need and we are talking a few handfuls. I bag a variety of free edibles on my way back from the shops (avoiding road traffic paths) and make a salad or salsa verde or a pesto with it. Yum what a treat and they are so damn good for you. How good is that? If you care what you put into your body then I guess you care what you put on it. I also make my own astonishing premium face creams and serums specific for my own individual needs. I create my own seasonal hydrosols and add my own vitamins, enzymes, compounds and amino acids to my formulas costing a fraction of the cost of high street brands. I will be offering some half day courses on making premium face creams and serums and also foraging walks with hands on demonstrations on making some amazing wild edible recipes. Take a look at my blog and see some of my stunning edibles and creams. You can email me on my blog (at the top right contact me box) if you would like to book a place and I will reply with dates, times, questions and cost etc. These will take place late spring, summer and autumn. Look out for me perusing around Dunstable. I am often on my knees eyeing up the weeds so stop and chat to me.

Thousands of Creda, Hotpoint and Indesit tumble dryers have been recalled as fire hazards and people are being told they have to pay for a replacement or worse, wait months for an engineer to come out. So our most recent campaign has been to push for justice and this month at Soapbox we’ve been inundated with complaints from people affected. Now is the time of year where many of us are getting ready to take a well deserved break leaving the UK to fly off to exotic places around the globe. However, for some the thought of lounging on some sun drenched beach or sip-ping cocktails by the pool is tainted with negative thoughts and feelings about how they are going to get there. The thought of flying fills some people with absolute dread and merely thinking about getting on a plane can cause anxiety and distress. Those who have a flying phobia otherwise known as aviophobia may have an idea as to what caused the problem whilst others are at a loss to understand why they feel the way they do. Actually what is at work here is a part of the brain called the amygdala whose job is to sound the alarm when it detects potential danger. Although it serves a crucial purpose in times of genuine danger there are times when it overreacts and gets in the way. So what can be done to alter this naturally occurring stress response when is it unwanted? One simple, yet often effective posi-tive action anyone can take is to regulate their breathing. As we become stressed our sympathetic nervous system kicks in increasing heart rate, sweating and muscular ten-sion. Add in feeling sick and rapid, shallow breathing from the top of the chest and what we have is a recipe for really not feeling good! This can come on very

suddenly and becoming aware of it is likely to make us feel even more anxious leading to a vicious circle aggravating the very feelings we do not want. Breaking this cycle may seem surprisingly simple however using a different type of breathing can counteract the stress response by engag-ing the parasympathetic nervous system using our natural biological braking system to slow things down to a steady, more comfortable pace. Breathing is controlled by taking a shorter in breath and longer out breath regulated by mak-ing a silent mental count of in for 7 and out for 11. Being flight phobic does not have to be a permanent part of life. Seeking help from a professional hypnotherapist may offer a way of improving the travelling experience where the aim is to remove or diminish unpleasant thoughts and feelings associated with flying. Hypnosis is a natural state of pleasant relaxation where the therapist works with the client to facilitate the desired change, resolving faulty thinking and freeing the person from unhelpful limiting beliefs. It is possible to move from being flight phobic to someone who is better able to handle negative feelings leading up to the flight, feeling more at ease on a plane and looking forward to a fabulous holiday just like everybody else. If you think you could benefit from hypnotherapy contact Peter Garner full details can be found on www.Petergarner.org

VOLVO XC90 T8

How many cars have you driven that come with an Orrefors crystal gearshift lever as

standard? South of zero, I’d guess, but it’s one of the classy little touches you’ll find in Volvo’s latest range topper, its twin engined XC90 T8. With its twin engine set up, it show-cases the future for Volvo, one of the features of which will be the distinctive Thor hammer headlights you’ll find here lighting the way. It’s built on Volvo’s SPA platform (Scaleable Product Architecture) which means it will be used for future cars in the pipeline that we’ll be seeing before too long. 2015 was Volvo’s best year in the UK for 21 years, thanks to the V40 and the XC60. Nearly 3,000 XC90s have been sold here so far since its relaunch last year as a truly classy top banana true seven seater SUV. The latest addition to the range is the T8 and the engines (plural) in question here are Volvo’s T6 petrol unit linked up with an 87hp electric motor, which on a 10amp feed found in most UK homes will charge up in three and a half hours. The T8 can be driven for up to 27 miles on electric power alone – enough for most people’s daily commute – so

on many journeys it will not emit any exhaust pollutants at all. It has a different mechanical setup to other XC90s. Its petrol engine drives the front wheels only, while its electric motor drives the rear wheels. This means that, depending on the road conditions and the drive mode selected, the T8 can operate in front, rear or all-wheel drive. It is said to be the safest Volvo ever

built, and offers the most comprehen-sive standard safety package in the car industry. It also features two world-first safety technologies – Run-off Road Protection and Auto Brake at Junctions – which are part of Volvo’s advanced suite of intelligent safety systems. Dominating the dash area is the 9 inch info module that comes as standard and it’s a brilliant piece of kit. It houses pretty well all the functions apart from starting the thing up and it removes with one swish of your finger across the black screen the need to clutter up the dash area with randomly sited buttons and switches. I love it, and my initial foray with the XC90 a while back which left me baf-fled in some areas of its use was quickly forgotten. If you can operate a tablet, this is just as easy.

Opt for the T8 Twin Engine and not only do you enjoy better performance, economy and substantially lower tax costs, also the standard kit is better too. Irrespective of the trim level chosen, all T8 Twin Engine XC90s get a powered tilt and slide panoramic sunroof, four-zone climate control with a cooled glove box, 12.3” active TFT driver information display, that Orrefors crystal glass gearlever knob, seven Drive

Mode Settings and Adjust-able Steering Force, third-row

air-conditioning, and auxiliary fuel-fired pre-conditioning heater (allows you to pre-set the cabin temperature before getting into the car). XC90 is a very spacious, as well as space-efficient, vehicle. The long wheelbase and the comparatively small engine bay – a re-sult of Volvo’s decision to only use four-cylinder engines – means cabin space is impressive. It’s like a gentlemen’s club in there, so quiet and relaxing. It’s as a business user that you really score with this, they say. Because of its low CO2 figure, it qualifies for a 100 per cent first year allowance, so the entire cost of purchase can be written off in the first year of ownership. Some cynics might say for hybrid, read tax dodge, but not me of course. Its clean, minimalist Scandinavian de-sign sets it apart from its competitors.

Inscription; £64,2051969cc four cylinder petrol engine, 320hp/400Nm, plus 87hp/240Nm electric motor Top speed 140mph, 0-62mph 5.6secs; Fuel – combined figure 134.5mpg; CO2 49g/km; Will it fit the garage? 4950/2140/1776 (l/w/h).

ATravellers Tale

By Paul Heley

Like the other two cathedrals, Worcester goes all the way back to Saxon times and AD 680 when a priory was first started by Bishop Bosel. In AD 983 it was rebuilt by St Oswald and finally in 1084 Bidshop Wulfstan initiated further building which continued until 1504. Over the centuries the full gamut of English architectural styles were employed (and may now be enjoyed) ranging from Norman through to Gothic Perpendicular. It has an unusual crypt, a unique Chapter House, and exquisite wooden carving in the Choir. Like both Gloucester and Hereford, Worcester has a fine set of 39 misericords dating from 1379 showing biblical stories, mythological images and folklore. As with Gloucester cathedral, Worcester was caught up in the civil war between Stephen and Maud and twice ravaged, first by Maud’s army in 1139 and later by Stephen’s in 1150 and in 1216, it was also attacked by Faulkes de Breaute (a mercenary captain in King John’s

army). Faulkes is known in the South Beds area as the “Robber Baron of Bedfordshire” and was the reason for much public misery and outrage in Bedford, Luton and Dunstable in the early 1200s.Following his death in October 1216, King John chose to be buried in Worcester cathedral and his tomb may be seen. And later in 1502, Worcester was the chosen place for the burial of Prince Arthur, elder brother of Henry 8th and first husband of Catherine of Aragon (whose mar-riage to Henry was annulled at Dunstable in 1533).Worcester Priory was dissolved by Henry 8th during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1540 but not demolished and immediately reinstated as a cathedral. However, it was badly damaged during the English Civil War but later restored by Charles 2nd following the Restoration of the Monarchy. Its setting on the banks of the River Severn is particularly pleasing (floods permitting!)

The Three Cathedrals

The three cities of England’s West Midlands, namely Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester are well known for their magnificent Cathedrals. I’ve always thought visits to these three superb cathedrals would make a nice overall “package” - but not all in one go; so it transpired that individual visits proved to be necessary.

We’ve explored the Cathedrals of Gloucester and Hereford in previous issues, we’ll conclude our journey with a look at Worcester.

Helping The Medicine Go DownPets

How to give your pet a tablet

PDSA Vet, Vicki Larkham-Jones, said: “If your pet is prescribed tablets by your vet then it’s important to make sure the entire course is taken. Not completing a course of medication can mean it won’t work as effec-tively, so your pet could take longer to get better. It’s always best to give your vet a call if you think your pet is fully better part way through a course of medication and are unsure if they need to finish it.” Some medicines can be given as liquids, but others have to be taken as tablets. Your vetwill explain how often you have to give them, whether they can be crushed at all (some pills are less effective if crushed) and if they can be given with food.

The easiest option, if the tablet can be given with food, is to hide it in your pet’s favourite treat, or wrap it in a piece of meat. If the tablet can be crushed then you can mix it in with a portion of their food. All the food must be eaten though, to ensure the full dosage is taken. If this doesn’t work, or the tablet can’t be given with food then it may be best to get someone to help you to give them the tablet. One person should help to hold your pet still; for small pets they can be placed on a surface (with no danger of falling) and stand behind the pet holding them gently but firmly. For larger dogs, they will need to sit on the floor, ideally against a wall, with someone steadying their body and head to limit movement. Have a syringe of water ready in case your pet won’t swallow their tablet. The second person should gently take hold of the up-per jaw of your pet with one hand and tilt it upwards; this naturally opens the mouth slightly. Using their other hand, gently pull your pet’s lower jaw down by placing their fingers on the incisors and drop the tablet onto the tongue, as far back as possible.

Close the mouth and stroke your pet’s throat in a gentle downward motion until they swallow. Once your pet licks their lips, this is a good indication that they have swallowed the tablet. If they are struggling to swallow you can syringe a small amount of water into their mouth to encourage swallowing. It’s a good idea to give your hands a wash afterwards. Giving liquid medication is a little easier, but quite similar. One person should hold your pet still while the other person administers the medication. This is usually done with a syringe (provided by your vet) and squirted into the side of your pet’s mouth while their head is held level. When you’re finished, reward your pet with plenty of praise so that they will associate the process with get-ting something nice at the end! If you are still having problems, then ask your vet practice for more advice – the medication may even be available in a different form that is easier for you to give. PDSA is on a mission to educate the nation on pet wellbeing and is delighted that funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery is helping the charity to continue this vital work.

From time to time your pet may need to take medicines, but any pet owner will know that this can be easier said than done!

The Chelsea Flower Show is to gardening what the Paris catwalks are to fashion. Paris fashions may seem outlandish, but they push certain trends, which in a watered-down version end up in high-street shops. Likewise, though many of Chelsea’s show gardens are fantasy pieces which demonstrate outrageous ideas, the horticultural trends on display will find their way into our own more modest plots. For example; did you know that bonsai specimens and topiary gardens were intro-duced at Chelsea in 1913? Rock gardens were introduced in the 1940’s and decking in the eighties. All of these can now be bought in garden centres up and down the land.In 2006 James Dyson even produced a water feature in which the water ran uphill. Actually I’m still waiting for my garden centre to stock one of those! Maybe one day...Chelsea isn’t just about high fashion though; it reflects environmental trends too. In recent years there have been hosepipe bans in the great Pavillion and many of the gardens have showcased drought-tolerant planting schemes.Chelsea draws over 150 000 visitors each year. For the past ten years it’s been held over

five days instead of four, such is its popularity. The sheer quantity and varieties of plants on display to the general public is breathtaking.Chelsea really is window-shopping at its fin-est. It’s like walking through a real-life version of the best garden design catalogue in the world. And if you visit on the last day you don’t have to restrict yourself to window shopping. At 4pm precisely a bell rings and the great Chel-sea sell-off begins. The poor designers, after all their hard work, begin the mammoth task of dismantling their creations. The good news is that the public can buy them. It’s perfectly possible to end up owning a little piece of a prize winning garden. So what should you choose? If it were me I’d want something special; a reminder of my visit. I’d go for a species which I know would grow in my garden, but an unusual variety, not available in my local garden centre. In my case it would probably be an unusual lavender or fuchsia.Choose carefully and you could have a little piece of Chelsea gold adorning your plot for many years to come.

Tom Thumb

The Lawn With space at a premium and the size of gardens in new-build developments shrinking, balconies, roof terraces and tiny back yards are becoming the norm. If you’ve only got a small space, how can you give it the wow factor? TV gardening expert Charlie Dimmock, has some ideas of her own on how to jazz up a balcony and attract wildlife in the process.

“Wildlife wants flowers all year round, just as we do,” she says. “Go for plants which give you a continu-ous amount of flowers. Some of the bedding plants are great and the more simple single flowers are better because they tend to have more nectar and pollen in them. Some petunias are quite good, as are marigolds, osteospermums and other daisy-plants like marguerites.“If you go for plants with double flowers they tend to be less pollen-rich. Lavender and thyme are also good because they have a long flowering season.”A good variation of plants which provide year-round interest may also be the way to go.“I’d have two or three evergreen shrubs, not too big, such as a Daph-ne odora ‘Marginata’, which has a variegated leaf and fantastic scent in the spring. I’d also have a small pittosporum, as there are interesting

and different variegations, including ‘Tom Thumb’, a purple one that stays like a round ball with purple leaves.“Go for small-er shrubs like Pittosporum tobira, which is slow-growing and stays small, with really lovely scented flowers, or nandina (sacred bamboo). Don’t buy some-thing like a forsythia which is going to grow too big and only flowers for about two weeks and then becomes boring.

“Go for plants which give you two or three different times of interest. The nandina are evergreen - in the spring the first leaves are bright red, then it flowers in the summer and bears red berries in the autumn - giv-ing you a lot of interest.”Make the most of your space, which means using height for optimum effect.“If you’ve a piece of trellis you can

grow things up that, so you’ve the vertical option as well. Climbing

plants will also give you a bit more height, texture

and colour.”Don’t dismiss ivy because ivy flowers attract beneficial insects, says Charlie.

“Ivy flowers very late in the season and very early

in the spring and it’s a really good source of nectar for insects because there’s nothing much about at that time. When ivy reaches the top of a wall you get round, green flowers followed by black berries, which are good for birds.”If you plant thoughtfully, you can at-tract a good variety of birds. Provide some water, even if it’s just a bird bath, and put up bird feeders.“Birds like to be able to perch somewhere while they are coming in to feed. If you have an unclut-tered space with only a bird feeder, they probably won’t come in, but if you’ve got a few shrubs and a climb-er up the wall and there’s maybe a tree outside, they are likely to queue up on it and check it’s safe.”Encourage your neighbours to add plantings to their small spaces, she urges.“Urban gardens are crucial for wildlife because they create the corridors, or the ‘hopping spaces’ between more open spaces like parks and bigger gardens.”

Bedfordshire’s Night Sky

By Seb Jay

Last Chance to Wave at Tim Peake: On Saturday 18 June British astronaut Tim Peake leaves the International Space Station after his six-month mission. In the lead up to his departure the Space Station delivers a series of spectacular passes over Bedfordshire’s late evening skies. Look for a solid bright white light moving on a roughly west-to-east trajectory every night from Thursday 26 May until Wednesday 15 June. The Station is easy to spot with the naked eye as it shines brighter than the stars. Check local press or online for exact timings.

Catch Mars and Saturn in a Telescope: This summer is a great opportunity to point a telescope at Saturn and Mars. Both planets are easy to find low down towards our southern horizon during late evenings. Mars glows a distinct orange colour. Saturn is that dimmer pale yellow point of light to the left of Mars. Even a small telescope will show Saturn’s rings.

Discover a Giant Swan in the Summer Night Sky: A giant swan sweeps across the night sky this summer. Look high up towards your south-east for a bright cross pattern of stars. This is the constellation of Cygnus. The cross represents a swan in flight, the brightest star in the constellation, a star called Deneb, forms the swan’s tail. At around 7000 light years away Deneb is the most distant star that we can see with the naked eye!

It is carnival time again for the villages of Edlesborough, Eaton Bray, Northall and Dagnall on the 4th July from 11am to 5pm. This year Myths Monsters and Magic come to St. Mary’s carnival on Edlesborough Green as the theme for decorating floats and houses on the procession route. In the past 20 years the carnival has raised over two hun-dred thousand pounds for local charities, organisations and repairs to the historic church in Eaton Bray. This year the funds raised will be directed towards ST. Mary’s Church in Eaton Bray repairs and provision of local village defibrillators. The procession leaves from The Orchards in Eaton Bray at 12:30pm led by the Carnival Queen and Princess with their Attendants and accompanied marching bands, decorated floats, majorettes, vintage vehicles and a whole range of local nutters, all dressed to the theme of Myths, Monsters and Magic. The convoy arrives at Edlesborough Green about 45 minutes later when the afternoon’s entertainment gets underway. Many rides and stalls on Edlesborough greenwill be open from 10 or 11am including BBQ food. So if you fancy a breakfast roll or hamburger, hot dog or spicy wrap with a preview of some of the rides .. get there early!

This June, Totternhoe Players have an-other comedy treat for us in store, with the return of the tale of a struggling amateur dramatic society which so en-tertained audiences in 2014. The saga continues with another misadventure for the hapless four wannabe actors, who, in a desperate attempt to beat television at its own game, decide to offer punters:“ STRICTLY SEX FACTOR (ON ICE)”.Creativity is a keynote of their produc-tion, especially as they have no money to actually pay for the usual Big Show scenery and props. Will we be treated to the unforgettable sight of Joyce singing in a bathtub again or will Mar-garet dazzle us with a spot of break-dancing? Will Bruno Tonioli give 10 points to any of the contestants? And what does Simon Cowell think of them all? Come along to Totternhoe Lower School and prepare to be amazed! This stupendous main attraction will be supported by a tongue-in-cheek introduction and a memorable finale piece, both devised by our director, Annette Probert.

Performances of “Totternhoe Presents STRICTLY SEX FACTOR (ON ICE)” by David Tristram, courtesy of Flying Ducks Publishing, will take place on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th June at Totternhoe Lower School hall at 7.30pm. There will be a Ploughman’s meal with dessert during the interval, washed down by your favourite drinks –although you do need to bring those yourself! Don’t forget the glasses either! Please call 01582 603287 to book your tickets. Tickets for the play and meal cost only £9 each and must be paid for in advance. All proceeds of the interval raffle will be donated to Alzheimer’s Society UK.

Hairspray:You can save on buying a strong hold hair-spray as you just want something that does the job well. However, you should splurge on a fine hold hairspray as the ingredients will allow you to brush it out and restyle without leaving any flakes or white marks.

Shampoo, Conditioner & TreatmentsThese are the foundations of your hair styl-ing so you should definitely splurge here. You most definitely get what you pay for – we’ve recently launched a luxury range, Couture Hair, and the ingredients are far superior and have more scientific listing of ingredients. You’ll find more expensive ranges that you won’t need to use as much as they are concentrated so they last longer, often they are multi-tasking too. With an intensive conditioning masque you will only use this once or twice a week so it’s a treat and should leave your hair feeling renewed and rejuvenated so you should definitely splurge on this.

Pastes/GelsYou’re looking for texture and hold with these types of styling products and quite of-ten you’ll find that a cheaper brand perform just as well. You’re using just small amounts so as long as you’re not overloading your hair, you can look at saving on these.

VolumisersNearly all women love volume – you want that natural feel without it feeling weighed down, sticky or too heavy so definitely look at splurging here too. I prefer a spritz style volumiser as you can target specific areas.

HairdryerThis is another splurge I’m afraid! It really does pay to invest in a professional hairdryer – I’m loving the new Collexia that includes a keratin or protein treatment so it’s actually treating your hair as you dry it. Professional hairdryers are initially more expensive but you do cut your drying time down signifi-cantly and this is only a good thing for the condition of your hair.

CHEDDINGTON BOWLS CLUB Bowlers certainly enjoy their bowling, but as much talk can be about the quality of the meal provided by a Club after a match. We could name a few Clubs who are miserly and who leave all the catering to a few ladies. This is not the case at Cheddington Bowls Club, where the men muck in. Rodney’s roast pork and Richard’s herbed chicken set a standard other Club’s cannot match. Fantastic food at £2 a head – and that invariably includes a tasty pud!Bowls is a great value sport: a new bowler can join Cheddington Bowls Club for less than the equivalent of a £1 a week.
