Field Observations
There arent any clear activities youcan do for free when you enter the town The Village Park doesnt have much to offer other than a bench to sit Additionally, Main Street doesnt offer anywhere to sit which detracts from business and people
wanting to spend time there
The Village brochure talks up Rochester and Letchworth Park more than what there is to do in theVillage itself
Unclear if there is parking off of Main Streeto If one does notice the municipal parking, they think its for residents only
Welcoming sign says that its a Historic Village but there arent many more public signs thatexplain why
Nothing is labeled well except the retail businesses on Main Streeto Its easy to miss important buildings such as the mayors office, tourist office, etc.
Main Street businesses dont seem tobe cohesiveo Businesses and people of the Village of Geneseo need to have a similar vision and mission
for the Village
Communication Audit
Website is very text heavy on main page, lacks excitement/encouragement of interactiono Minimal designs or pictures
Unclear what graphic is the Villages logo, placement ofo Logo is outdated and lacks creativity and color
Very few pictures on website, no clear and consistent template Pictures that they have are small and not representative of the town Different fonts should be used for headings and subject matter
Color schemes and aesthetics should be used to draw the readers attention to a memorable logo Tagline Become part of our tradition is featured at the bottom of the page
o People might not think to look/read all the way down to the bottomo Having the same tagline as the Tourism Committee could be confusing for readers
Facebook Page should be updated more often with more things than just pictureso Be sure there is an event made for everything going on in the Villageo Perhaps post historical facts about the Village on a certain day of each weeko Get local businesses involved in the Facebook Page, advertise buying local and different
promotions and sales that businesses may be having There is minimal interaction between the Village and the SUNY Geneseo campus about Village
events and activities
o Be sure to keep Whats Up e-mails in the back of your mind when the Village is about tohost festivals, events, and other projectso Making sure that SUNY Geneseo students are aware of these activities and events will
ensure their participation and interest in the Village as a whole

Small Town Branding Research
The 7 Goals of Placemaking
1. Create a Special Place in your Communitya. Municipal Parking should be clearly stated so that visitors and residents feel comfortable
parking and dont need to stress about metered parkingb. Signs that tell where local buildings are (i.e. Village Office, Wadsworth Library) should be
available so that visitors and residents arent confused2. Strive to Create Unique and Creative Spaces that Inspire Visitorsa. Making a self-guided tour available and easily accessible to the public will make for a
unique experience when visiting Geneseob. Being sure to advertise the Wadsworth Library, Historical Museum, and National Warplane
Museum will enrich peoples educational experiences about the Village of Geneseo3. Create a Place that People will want to Explore
a. Pick an alleyway that can be repainted each year by students from all schools in the Villageof Geneseo to make for dynamic spaces
b. Recreate parks and make them more interactive for visitors and residents throughout theentire year
4. Create Places that will Inspire Experiences that Residents will want to Sharea. Again, making sure that the parks are community meeting places where people can cometogether and create unique experiences together
b. Using Main Street festivals such as the Farmers Market and Hunt Day to inspire residentsand get them involved with Main Street and local businesses
5. Create a Place that is Different and will Set the Community Aparta. The unique and historical architecture of Geneseo serves as an asset to the community that
sets it apart from other communitiesb. The local of the Village of Geneseo makes for gorgeous sunsets, something that should be
utilized by the Village to show off to others6. Make the Village Memorable to Others
a. Being sure to create a cohesive plan that will tie together Main Street businesses and thegovernmental mission of the Village to ensure the happiness of those that live and visit theVillage of Geneseo
7. Create a Positive Experiencea. Through the implantation of a self-guided tour, making Main Street more aesthetically
pleasing, and suggesting the addition of other events and items that will enhance theexperience of living and visiting Geneseo will insure a positive image when thinking aboutGeneseo
Events and Improvements for Small Towns1. Roller-Skating Rink
a. We suggest that the town take this idea and transform it into an Ice Skating Rink becausethe winter season is the slowest of the year
2. Giant Chessboard in Parka. Could be made out of plywood at a low cost by local chess club and put into the parkb. Creates a more interactive atmosphere in the park, gives people a reason to meet as a
community, gives the opportunity to hold tournaments3. Night Lighting
a. Making sure that The Palace sign is lit up every night, creating more interesting lighting asdecorations for Main Street at night

Since the college students play a large role inthe Village, and make up half of its population during the school year, we will make suggestionsto the Village on how to use this population to their advantage (i.e. through volunteer work)and how to further raise the quality of SUNY Geneseo experience. By focusing on a self-guidedtour and other engaging opportunities for visitors and residents to participate in, we hope tomake the Village of Geneseos rich historical story come to life for all ages.

Phase III: Creative Communications Options
Logo and Tagline
We created a logo that encompasses both the historical and ongoing aspects of Geneseo: thebeautiful sunsets and the bear fountain
o Keeping the logo relatively simple, we believe it will be easy to transcribe onto differentmaterials at low costs
o The logo is colorful to make it playful, inviting, and representative of the bright historyand culture of the Village of Geneseo
A tagline is meant to represent the branding image of an organization and is something thateveryone apart of that organization (or village in this case) can get behind and support
o We came up with the tagline: A Small Village with a Big Heart to show that the Villageof Geneseo is cohesive, united, and caring to both residents and visitors
This big heart is what leads the community to be cohesive, active, and united We tried to emphasis these traits about the Village of Geneseo in this
project by suggesting even more engaging, interactive ideas and how tocater to peoples needs in a productive and sensible way
Raising the quality of life in the Village is what shows that the Villagespeople and government care about one another
o This tagline is one that residents can get behind right away because of the historicemphasis on volunteerism and community service within the Village

Highland Park is the perfect opportunity.

Phase IV: Raising the Quality of Life
Installment Suggestions
Advanced Kiosk Installmento Advancedkiosks.com offers an Outdoor Enviro kiosk
This is perfect for Geneseo weather, even in the winter Price of one kiosk is $10,295 not including shipping
More expensive than indoor kiosks, however, indoor kiosks have to beput inside a shelter, which would even out the cost; price of 3 is $9,895each.
o Kiosk features WiFi, Windows 7 and a credit card reader Can feature a shortcut to Munchful so if people want to order food from Main
Street to be delivered to the park, they can do it from the kiosk Munchful is an online application where people can look up places to eat
in Geneseo and order their food online Kiosk features a printer and can also feature a shortcut to Google Maps where
visitors can quickly and easily print out directions to anywhere in the towno Aesthetics: very slim with a 19 inch touch-screen monitor
Wont look out of place or gaudy Kiosks can be placed at:
Intersection on Main Street at the Bear Fountain Entrance of Highland Park College Green on the SUNY Geneseo campus
o Kiosk should have a main menu featuring: Where to eat Where to shop Where the parking lot is & how to park there Directions and addresses of other landmarks around the Village
o Once a person can see how much there is to do in the Village of Geneseo, they can create abucket list on the kiosk of all the things they want to do before they leave the Village
o Could make the information kiosk at Highland Park a check-in location on Foursquare andif businesses are willing to cooperate, if someone checks in and uses the kiosk, they can geta coupon for a business on Main Street
Seasonal Ice Skating Rink Installmento What: Rent a temporary ice skating rink for the winter months
Can be open to residents and visitors Can be included in wintertime festivities and events
o Why: Utilizes all potential space in the Village Park or Highland Park Brings community together during the Holiday Season Will attract more tourists to the village and increase the quality of life for residents
o Who: Elementary and High School children, college students, families and parents, Villageand Town residents
o When: December-Early March Weather needs to be cold enough to sustain the ice in the rink Make this a yearly tradition and have a ceremony for the opening of the rink
o Where: Highland Park or Village Park

Installment Suggestions
o Cost: need to contact various rink rental companies to get quotes, such as: http://www.magiciceusa.com/ http://www.artificialiceevents.com/ice-rentals/spectacular-events/ http://www.nicerink.com/ If the space in Highland Park is used, it would be very cost effective
Town water can be used to flood the low-lying area Structure from previous year can be used Village employees and volunteers can be used for maintenance, dont have to
worry about returning the structure in pristine form
Municipal Parking Loto Not many people know that the parking lot exists, so there should be better signage along
Main Street telling people where it is If there is a kiosk in the Village, less signs would be needed to show where the
municipal parking iso The rules of the lot are unclear
The sign at the main entrance says Public Parking, but the signs in each spot sayPermit Parking Only for certain time periods
There are no signs indicating the rules for the rest of the day, so most people areunsure whether or not they are allowed to park in the lot
There should be a sign at each entrance clearly stating the rules for permits, non-permits, during the week, weekends, days, and nights
For Example: Permit Parking Only from 8-4 on Weekdays No Permit Required for Overnight or Weekends
o Weed outside edges and fences of whole lot Hang or plant flowers along the fences Put planters along the outside edges where there is grass and dirt
o Close down parking lot over the summer when there are less people to fix the potholeso Extend Farmers Market to parking lot entrance on Center Street
Parking lot would still be accessible through entrance on Chestnut Artistic Alleyway Installment
o Several Main Street business owners are interested in improving alleyways by usingaesthetically pleasing artwork
Most said that they would support it as long as the art was professionally done orwell done by SUNY Geneseo Art students and all of the proper permits and approvalwere acquired
o Each alleyway can depict a different aspect of Geneseo including sunsets, historic sites, traditional events, Main Street, and the college
Art students may have more ideas about combining aesthetically pleasing artworkwith the image of the Village, so they should be included in the process of planningthe project
o If looking to have artwork professionally done, Charlie Flagg painted the murals forSundance, however, the Sundance owner is unsure if Charlie still paints murals due to hisold age
If he does not still paint, he may be able to recommend another professional willingto work on the project
o Other professional artists/businesses in the area:

Village of Geneseo Self-Guided Tour
We created a 10-Stop Walking Tour for the Village of Geneseo to be utilized by both residents andtourists
o This tour is interactive, engaging, and interestingo It can be put on the Villages website for people to print out at home or placed in the Village
Office for people to pick up and use for free
The tour is compiled in a booklet form in order to conserve space and the amount of pages used
o This booklet is more portable than a packet so that people can easily take it around withthem while they do the walking tour
We made the tour only 10 stops and emphasized SUNY Geneseo in the tour as well as the Villageo SUNY Geneseo is a large component of the Village of Geneseo
By including the college, the tour is more useful for a wider range of people (i.e.current and perspective students, tourists, residents, and families of students)
o Having the tour be 10 stops makes it more doable and less of a time commitment forpeople, ensuring that they complete the entire tour
The landmarks we chose to use on this tour are:1. The Wadsworth Homestead2. The Village Park3. The Bear Fountain4. The Wadsworth Library5. The College Green6. The Greek Tree/Seuss Spruce/Clock Tower7. The Village Court House8. The Hartford House9. St. Michaels Church10.The Big Tree Inn

o Raising the traffic through the Village to participate and view these projects wouldencourage people to spend more money on Main Street
More time spent on Main Street more money Main Street will receive In general, our suggestions are affordable and sustainable
o We offer options for both pricey and affordable installments (i.e. benches and ice skatingrink) so that the Village can purchase the object that is in its price range
According to our survey, these changes will give the Village a more positive imageo With this positive image, word will spread that the Village of Geneseo is a place that shouldbe visited and therefore more people will purchase hotel rooms, food, and souvenirso This will also encourage more people to come and live in the Village
Each project we suggest in the Main Street Installments and Interactive Mural sections, other thanthe kiosk, would cost around $500
o Spending $500 each year to create these traditions and raise the quality of life in the Villageis very affordable
