THE VILLAGE NEWS BELMONT VILLAGE AT CARDIFF BY THE SEA DECEMBER 2017 SADIE’S CORNER It is my favorite time of the year! The season when friends and families make a concerted effort to spend time with one another and spread goodwill. Lots of events are taking place this month – please refer to the newsletter for updates on Holiday dinners and outings. Last month we talked about being prepared in case of an emergency. Our newest community in Albany (located on the UC Berkeley campus) helped 103 seniors displaced by the northern California wild fires. On the morning of Oct. 9th, 45 seniors from another assisted living caravaned to Belmont Village and began a five week stay in our memory care unit. This was an emergency evacuation from two different communities. One of those communities burned to the ground. A week later, 58 more seniors arrived for the same reason, though these seniors were from Independent Living. This undertaking was enormous and required the continued support of all Belmont Village staff. Our beloved APC Therese spent a week in Albany in October, assisting residents and fulfilling their recreation goals. Don, our Building Engineer, also went to help. It was a testament to our commitment at Belmont Village to be the premier provider of senior care services in our communities. And to our residents here at Cardiff, please know that our commitment is ultimately to you. We have a plan in place for an emergency, and we continue to train our staff on emergency response. Your participation in drills and your response during real emergencies are critical to the success of our community. For the folks in Independent Living, please keep your emergency backpack near your front door. The contents should include your list of medications, a flashlight and batteries, two bottles of water, a blanket and some nonperishable food items like granola bars. In this month of December, I am counting my blessings! I feel blessed to have a loving, happy and SAFE family. I feel blessed to work for such an amazing group of seniors. I feel so fortunate to witness the countless acts of kindness here – I see adult children hugging loved ones, I see Clare at the front desk spreading joy like sunshine on a bright day, I see residents hugging staff. What an honor to be part of this compassionate crew! Happy Holidays! Christmas Bellsby Henry Wadsworth

LongfellowI heard the bells on Christmas

Day Their old, familiar carolsplay, And wild and sweet Thewords repeat Of peace on earth,good-will to men!

And thought how, as the dayhad come, The belfries of allChristendom Had rolled alongThe unbroken song Of peace onearth, good-will to men!

Till ringing, singing on its way,The world revolved from nightto day, A voice, a chime, A chantsublime Of peace on earth,good-will to men!

Then from each black, accursed mouth The cannonthundered in the South, Andwith the sound The carolsdrowned Of peace on earth,good-will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rentThe hearth-stones of acontinent, And made forlorn Thehouseholds born Of peace onearth, good-will to men!

And in despair I bowedmy head;

“There is no peace on earth,” Isaid; For hate is strong, Andmocks the song Of peace onearth, good-will to men!”

Then pealed the bells moreloud and deep: “God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The Wrongshall fail, The Right prevail, Withpeace on earth, good-willto men.”

Light the Festive Candlesby Aileen Fischer

Light the first of eighttonight— the farthest candle tothe right.

Light the first and second, too, when tomorrow’s dayis through.

Then light three, and thenlight four— every dusk onecandle more Till all eight burnbright and high,

honoring a day gone by Whenthe Temple was restored, rescued from the Syrian lord,

And an eight-day feastproclaimed— The Festival ofLights—well named To celebratethe joyous day when weregained the right to pray to ourone God in our own way.

The Feast of Lights by EmmaLazarus

Kindle the taper like thesteadfast star

Ablaze on evening’s foreheado’er the earth,And add each night a lustre tillafarAn eightfold splendor shineabove thy hearth.

NURSE’S NOTEIt’s that time of year again! The holidays are here, and

unfortunately so is flu season.Influenza season beginssometime in the late fall, usuallypeaks over the winter, andbegins to wane in the spring. The influenza virus is acontagious respiratory illnessthat can infect the throat, nose, and possibly the lungs. As ourimmune defenses decline withage, those over 65 and older areat a greater risk forcomplications including sinusand ear infections, bacterialpneumonia, and worsening ofchronic conditions such asasthma, diabetes, or congestiveheart failure.

The flu is spread mainly bydroplets, for instance when aperson sneezes, coughs, or talks. The flu can also be spread whena person touches a surface orobject that has the flu viruses,

then touches their own nose ormouth. In fact, you could passthe flu to someone before youare even aware you are sick. However, people are typicallymost contagious in the first 3 to4 days after becoming ill. Signsand symptoms of the flu includefever, sore throat, cough, stuffyor runny nose, headache, bodyor muscle ache, and fatigue.

The best way to prevent theflu is to get vaccinated. Fluvaccines are updated eachseason to keep up with the virusas it changes to ensure the bestprotection against influenza. TheCDC also recommends takingpreventive actions. Some ofthese include; staying away frompeople who are sick, frequenthand washing, and coveringcoughs and sneezes. Take theserecommended steps to ensurethat you have a happy andhealthy holiday season and awonderful New Year!

NEIGHBORHOODNEWS

What do you know aboutdementia? Usually, when I askthis question, people will pausefor few seconds followed by,“Mmm ... It has something to dowith memory?!” That is a fairanswer. Dementia diagnosisinvolves memory loss in additionto other symptoms. Morefrequently I am reading articlesthat mention implicit memory.Implicit memory in this contextargues that our residents are stillable to form new memories fromevents. Details and nuances arenot recalled, but the overallfeeling caused by an event willsurface when the mind isjogged. Here at Belmontpossible ‘break of trust’situations are addressed duringdementia training with all ourstaff and routinely with theneighborhood care staff. Theidea that the feeling attached tothe event stays is fundamentalfor the care because if we use aform of redirection that doesnot work for a particularresident, behavior and quality oflife will be affected by it.However, the idea of implicitmemory has a positive andbeautiful side. Our residents canenjoy the feeling of a pleasantexperience. This time of the yearmakes it easy and inspiring tocreate those moments. Yourvisits, phone calls, and cards alladd to a great season.

CIRCLE OF FRIENDSAt the Helen Woodward

Animal Center, Fran B. gentlystroked the soft fur of twoalpacas. COF enjoyed aHowl-O-Ween tour with theirown private guide! Not only didthey pet a Madagascar hissingcockroach, but also a ratand lizard.

“Do you see the hole in myhair?” Fran B. said. “The alpacaseemed to take a bit of my hairoff. They loved my blonde hair.”

Charles C. felt drawn to theCenter as it is a place thatreminds him of his sister whotakes special interest in animalrehabilitation especially horses.COF loved this outing a lot!

As for future events thismonth, Group 1 cannot wait fortheir Narcissus plants toblossom. Perfect for theholidays, residents discussedwhether the plant came intobeing from the classicmythology story of the younglad Narcissus. For decoration,Katie L.’s holiday wreaths arenext for painting.
