1 – THE VIEWPOINT From Pastor David September! Back to school, Pacific University students return to town, the church “program year” begins. This year a couple extra movements juice up this month even more. The last weekend in September our UCC Central Pacific Conference will hold its Annual Gathering here in Forest Grove. I hope lots of you will choose to attend; it’s a great opportunity to share with folks from churches across Oregon and Idaho (and yes, a couple in Washington, too.) Check it out and register by going to cpcucc.org and scrolling down the page for information and links. Pacific U, through Chuck Currie’s office, will provide the primary spaces. Our church is stepping up to provide B&B homestays, overnight accommodations for youth at the church, and also childcare here at church. That Sunday morning we’ll also share worship with the wider conference in our sanctuary. The preacher for that Sunday will be the expected new Conference Minister Rev. John Tyler Connoley whose call we’ll vote on the day before. And that points to the second extra reality this September. Our dedicated and faithful search committee will be continuing the process that will bring a new settled pastor to FGUCC. As I write, they’ve begun doing video interviews. Following those initial interviews they expect to discern a candidate to engage more fully and in hopes to bring her or him to meet the congregation and extend a call. The timeline for all of this can’t be firmly nailed down, but September is likely a crucial month for discernment. Hold them all in your prayers. Pray also for the, as yet unknown, future settled pastor and his or her discernment. Related to this, let me lift up one more September and into October engagement. Part of the discernment and discussions of the search will be around salary package and the church’s budget. To start things off strong with a new pastor we hope to have a very strong stewardship program this year. The formal kick-off won’t be until October 6 th when our guest preacher will be former FGUCC member, former national UCC leader, always inspiring Linda Jaramillo. Before that, on September 22 nd (after a potluck and before a concert!) we’ll have a training for stewardship callers. We want to call on everyone. Even more than sharing information and asking for a pledge, this is an across the board check in time. What do you love about FGUCC; what are your concerns; where are you, or would you like to be, involved? The Viewpoint News From the Forest Grove United Church of Christ September 2019

September! Back to school, Pacific University students return to town, the church “program

Gathering here in Forest Grove. I hope lots of you will choose to attend; it’s a great opportunity

to share with folks from churches across Oregon and Idaho (and yes, a couple in Washington,

too.) Check it out and register by going to cpcucc.org and scrolling down the page for

Maybe you’d like to be involved as one of the stewardship callers—talk to me!

and prepare a wide variety of anthems which are selected according to the scriptures and

sermons of the week. Our music library continues to grow and contains compositions by the

great masters such as Bach and Vivaldi and also contemporary composers such as Marty

Haughen and Heather Sorensen.

If weekly rehearsals are not possible for you but you wish to sing in choir, consider being part of

the Kumallya (Come-All–You) Choir which rehearses pre-worship when there is a 5th

Sunday in

a month. Or consider singing for a season such as Christmas, Lent or Pentecost. For more

information contact Laura at [email protected].

BEST Team News The B.E.S.T. (Be Earth Stewards Today) Team

We have made modest steps towards being kind to our home planet Earth by reducing waste,

recycling what we can, using energy wisely and keeping our carbon footprint small. Climate

change has increased the urgency to do more. We have started programs to make church

members more aware of how changes in behavior help accomplish our goals. The “Green Game”

was one of the efforts to take a different path towards conservation of limited resources. We

financed our efforts by selling fair trade items such as chocolate, coffee and tea. Some of the

proceeds have been used to purchase lower energy LED lights to replace both incandescent and

fluorescent in the church.

Part of being kind to Earth is working with the ecosystem in a sustainable way. Sometimes the

steps are easy but often not. Changing the mind to adopt practices which lessen our impact on

resources and actively conserve is a challenge that may at times be inconvenient. It is easier to

simply discard the unwanted and not give it another thought.

We have started to think about other steps to reduce energy use by mitigating energy loss through

windows. Outright replacement may be the best option. What do you think? If you would like to

part the discussion then I invite you to join the B.E.S.T. Team.
