Dear Neighbours,

Welcome to the October

edition of ‘The Viewer’.

I thought it was time I

added my photo to the edi-

tor’s letter. I hope it doesn’t frighten any-

one!!! Now you all know that it isn’t the

little elves publishing this magazine and

making sure they are delivered through

your door. It is in fact little me, sat at the

desk as busy as a bee, making sure it all

gets finished in time ready for the printer,

and organising all the distribution.

Now, onto something more important.

Half term and halloween is looming at the

end of the month, therefore, we have listed

lots of events and fun activities to help you

keep the little ones entertained. Hope you

all have lots of fun!

Don’t forget it’s only 12 weeks to Christ-

mas. So if you are thinking of starting your

Christmas Shopping, why don’t you start by

looking through the magazine for some gift

ideas for your loved ones.

This month we have another competi-

tion to win a family ticket to the East of Eng-

land Autumn Show held on 10th October.

Go to page 64 to enter. I will make sure the

winners will get their tickets by the 8th Oc-

tober. Good Luck!!!

We have some exciting news, (well, I’m

excited anyway!). We have finally

launched our web site. You can now view

our magazines on line. We will be adding

and improving on this, but at least it’s a

start. Please have a look and if you have

any comments, I will be pleased to hear

from you. Contact details are below.

Finally, I hope you all enjoy this months

articles/business features in the magazine, I

would like to think there is something for

everyone! Also, please support your local

businesses advertising and don’t forget to

mention The Viewer when doing so.

Happy reading!

New Premises for Running Store

Advance Performance Doubles in Size!

Advance Performance, the innovative

sports retailer in Peterborough and Cam-

bridge, will be moving to larger premises in

Peterborough, close to where they are cur-

rently situated in Fengate. The new location

is due to open on 4th November and will be

double the size of the existing Peterborough

store, requiring an additional three mem-

bers of staff.

The larger premises at 4 Fengate East are

required to meet customer demand. Over

the last year store sales have increased by

almost 18%, with a profitability growth of

over 80%, which has allowed the owners to

expand the businesses in Peterborough and

Cambridge. The product range is also

growing with more triathlon clothing and

accessories, additional gait analysis and

sports science testing, as well as in store

physiotherapy, in association with the Fitzwil-

liam Hospital. Adjacent to the new 4400sq ft

store there will be a new bicycle shop to

complement the product range.

Advance Performance is a runaway success

story which regularly wins awards. It has

grown from a back bedroom business over

a twelve year period, moving into high

street premises in Peterborough in 1999 and

then to the purpose designed store in Fen-

gate in 2005. A second store opened in

Cambridge in 2007. The team currently

comprises 14 members of staff, which is due

to grow to 17 in October.

Managing Director and founder, Samantha

Hale, is excited about this move, comment-

ing, “Customers have been very happy with

us in Fengate for the last six years and were

thrilled when the opportunity of much larger

premises, just around the corner, came up.

We are investing in both the Peterborough

and Cambridge stores and the additional

space will also enable the mail order inter-

net sales side of the business to grow even

further. Taking on more staff is good for

Peterborough too.”

Best-Man Speech

B eing asked to be a best man is a

great honour and it comes with many

privileges like being the one to decide

on the fun and frolics of the stag do and the

pleasurable experience of being sur-

rounded for the day by one or more lovely

bridesmaids!

It does however carry a certain amount of

pressure and stress and of course there is

the much anticipated, and often dreaded

“best-man’s speech”.

If you have recently been granted the hon-

our of a best-man role but dread giving the

speech, take heart that you are not alone

in your fears and be assured there is a way

to conquer those nerves, plan for a success-

ful experience and even enjoy yourself in

the process!

Below are some tips to help get you through

the day with confidence, calm and style …

Face your fears and accept them!

It is ok to face your fear. Be honest with

yourself, admit what your fear is. It is a natu-

ral emotion and one best dealt with when

confronted, accepted and alternative solu-

tions found to overcome it.

Create positive self-talk!

Your mind, emotions and your body stress

levels react to the thoughts you have day

by day. Keep telling yourself you are an

amazing presenter and that people really

enjoy listening to your engaging speeches.

Keep telling yourself you can do this and

you will even enjoy it.

Breathe easily and smile!

Deep breathing is a brilliant way to calm

nerves and stay centred. Take in three

deep breaths - in through the mouth, out

through the nose - then smile the biggest

smile you can. Do this as many times as

you need to and at least twice just before

your big moment..

Increase your ‘Confident Energy’!

Silently imagine your body filling with a

nourishing and radiant energy. Name the

energy as confidence - imagine the energy

entering your body at the top of your head

and filling your entire body from the head

right down to your toes. Keep imagining

this and you will move through the day with

confidence, grace and style.

Create a personal mantra and believe in

yourself!

Create a positive personal mantra for on-

the-day nerves. Something like “I am calm,

confident and at ease. I am a brilliant pub-

lic performer. I am calm, confident and full

of style”. Keep repeating it to yourself and

you will soon begin to believe it. So too will

other people!

Working from Home Hooray for the holidays!

by Ted Bruning

O ne good thing about working

from home: it’s certainly

peaceful. Too peaceful,

sometimes. On the odd occasion,

I’ve been woken by the rattle of the

real worker’s key in the front door and

had to jump to attention and

desperately try to look busy to

escape being caught, quite literally,

napping.

These alarms notwithstanding, the

fact that there aren’t phones ceaselessly

ringing and co-workers constantly

demanding attention does make it easier

to get down to some proper grafting,

especially if your work is research-based.

Sometimes I’m so studious my office is like

the reading room at the British Library. Only

without all the books, obviously.

That’s when the kids are at school. But

what with Christmas, Easter, and Summer

holidays, half term breaks, staff training

days, and “inset days” (which is when the

teachers all migrate to the pub for the day,

but who can blame them?), the little

perishers hardly seem to be at school at all.

They’re not especially noisy, bless ‘em, but

the mere fact of their presence changes

the whole house from a place of work to a

place of music, cooking, daytime TV,

conversation, footsteps on the stairs, doors

opening and closing, things being

dropped, loos flushing – they can’t help it;

they’re only being; I just wish that they’d be

somewhere else.

Now that they’re older and doing

exams, to the horror of holidays we have to

add the perplexing business of study leave.

I mean, what do they want leave to study

for? Aren’t they supposed to be studying at

school? And if they don’t study at school,

they certainly don’t study at home. Or not

obviously, anyway. There are, true,

intermittent periods when they sequester

themselves in their rooms and a blessed

Trappist hush descends. Of course, for

most of that time they’re not revising at all:

they’re on Facebook, ipods stuck deep

into their semicircular canals. But at least

they’re quiet.

But even when they are actually

revising, their friends aren’t. They’re

constantly looming at the door, blocking

out the sunlight and trying to tempt my

poor innocents with the prospect of a

shared two-litre bottle of cider at the

recreation ground. It always takes ages to

persuade them that no, the kids haven’t

gone all posh and no, they don’t think

they’re too good for their friends these

days and – anyway, by the time they’ve

been diplomatically dismissed, the rhythm

of work is broken for good.

This is also the time when Dad’s Taxi

(and Mum’s Taxi too, it has to be said) is at

its busiest. Town, where all life worth living is

to be found, is seven miles away, and the

last bus departed for good at about the

same time, as I recall, that Council Tax that

used to pay for the buses rose sharply.

Several trips a day are therefore required.

But that’s good. At least it means that

there are interludes of peace between

“Dad, can you give us a lift into town?”

and “Dad, can you pick us up from town?”

They say that absence makes the heart

grow fonder. And the more my darling little

snugglebunnies are absent, the fonder of

them I am.

P eterborough Mayor Keith Sharp cut

the ribbon to open the new local

pharmacy - Halls the Chemist based

at Peterborough Road, Farcet, (nr. Stan-

ground Surgery and Stanground College) in

September.

Pharmacist Shabbir Damani who works at

the new branch said: “The vision to open

the pharmacy here started in 2003, but we

were told by officials that there was no

need for a chemist here. The position

changed last year because of the addi-

tional housing growth in the area”.

Halls the Chemist are an independent fam-

ily run company established since 1966.

They dispense all NHS and private prescrip-

tions including veterinary. A pharmacist is

available for advice without an appoint-

ment.

We have a prescription collection service

from all the doctor’s surgeries in Peterbor-

ough (including Stanground Surgery, Old

Fletton Surgery, Yaxley Group Practice,

Botolph Bridge Surgery just to name a

few). You could either drop off your re-

peats at the pharmacy or alternatively,

contact us and we will collect the prescrip-

tion on your behalf when it is ready from the

surgery and have it dispensed ready for you

to collect from the pharmacy or delivered

to your home or work free of charge. If you

have previously left your repeat part of your

prescription with us, we can re-order for you

at your request.

All the Halls Chemist branches have consul-

tation rooms, which allows patients the op-

portunity to discuss matters privately with

the pharmacist or members of the phar-

macy team. Halls have been providing free

blood pressure testing for its patients for

many years and later this year we are due

to be extending the free diagnostic services

available. This early detection of medical

conditions allows for appropriate lifestyle

changes or medical intervention by your

GP, to improve your health for today and

tomorrow.

Through our continuous work, we have ac-

tively looked to provide additional services

under the NHS, these have included Medi-

cines Use Reviews better known as medi-

cines MOT.

You can call us free on 0800 071 51 31 to

choose how the service could best work for

you, with a range of new options including

delivery to your home or work.

E astern Angles Theatre Company are

visiting Peterborough this Autumn with

a half-hour performance entitled Our Nobby which will be touring to over 20 com-

munity venues across the city from 22nd Sep-

tember onwards.

Mention the name Nobby to anyone from

Peterborough and the chances are they will

immediately remember ‘Nobby the Tramp’

the familiar character who, for many years,

made his home in a bus shelter and re-

ceived postcards, presents and food from

well-wishers. Nobby’s Facebook fanbase of

over 4,000 people is testament to his contin-

ued fame within the city.

Eastern Angles have commissioned Kenneth

Emson to write a play inspired by this legen-

dary figure…

Our Nobby is a funny and affectionate new

play by award-winning playwright Kenneth

Emson. Using the myths surrounding one of

Peterborough’s best-loved local figures, Our Nobby reflects on the city’s history and a

young girl’s aspirations. This show will strike a

chord with all those who remember Nobby

or who have wondered where their own lives

might be leading.

Our Nobby is directed by Kate Hall, a

Peterborough-based theatre practitio-

ner and Royal Shakespeare Company

Associate who delivered Eastern An-

gles’ 2009 schools’ project, Moving Tales.

The part of Nobby will be played by

local Peterborough actor, Mark Curtis,

known to local audiences for his ap-

pearances at the Key Theatre.

Our Nobby is being performed as part

of Eastern Angles’ Platform Peterbor-

ough 2010 season between September 22nd and October 16th.

O n Wednesday July 28th 2010 I de-

cided like a mad fool to jump

out of a plane strapped to an-

other human being, in order to raise

funds for Jake’s Appeal.

Jake Storer-Hamm lives in Peterborough

and started life like any other child hap-

pily running around and playing and en-

joying his family and friends, however he

was diagnosed with Late Infantile Neu-

ronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis also known

Batten’s Disease in September 2009 just

as he was turning 4 years.

Late Infantile Batten Disease is a fatal,

inherited disorder of the nervous system

that begins in early childhood. Symp-

toms of the disease begin appearing in

children as young as 2, but may have a

delayed onset, and may strike a previ-

ously normal child as old as 10. The dis-

ease is progressive causing developmen-

tal delay, cognitive and motor impair-

ment, seizures, and a progressive loss of

sight. Most, if not all affected children,

become blind by the age of 8, become

bedridden, and become totally depend-

ent on a loved one for continuous care.

The disease is relatively rare, occurring in

"2 to 4 of every 100,000" children.

There is currently no cure for this fatal ill-

ness however clinical trials do take place

in the hope to remedy this. They last for 6

weeks at a time and presently are only

held abroad. They are severely under

funded and so very expensive. The cost

for Jake to take part in just one of these

will be approximately £20K.

I know it is after the event, but any spon-

sorship made or donation big or small will

be very much appreciated. You can

sponsor me in the following way:

a) through Facebook by searching for

the group Jake’s Appeal. Please go to

Events where you can sponsor me using

your Paypal account or credit/debit card

by clicking on the link.

b) direct into the Paypal sponsorship

account by typing in the link : https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-

Gardening Michaelmas Daisies by Ursula Buchan

P erennials go in and out of fashion, but

nothing seems to diminish the appeal

of Michaelmas daisies – partly

because they flower in September and

October when many other perennials have

gone over, but also for their wide colour

range. They make excellent cut flowers at

harvest festival, and they provide late nectar

for butterflies. So it’s not surprising these

reliable hardy perennials have a special

place in gardeners’ affections.

The true Michaelmas daisy is derived

from the ‘New York Aster’ (Aster novi-belgii). They have daisy flowers with bright yellow

centres, and range in colour from blue to

mauve, red, pink and white. Popular

varieties include ‘Lady in Blue’ and ‘Jenny’.

Their main drawback is that they usually

require spraying with a fungicide in summer

to prevent mildew, which shows up as a

dusting of grey-white powder on the leaves

and undermines the vigour of the plant.

That is why other sorts of aster are becoming

increasingly popular with gardeners, in

particular the ‘New England Aster’ (Aster novae-angliae), which is less prone to

mildew and doesn’t need to be divided as

often. For a good light pink, Aster novae-angliae ‘Harrington’s Pink’ is excellent -

healthy, sturdy and up to 1.2 metres tall.

Another is A. novae-angliae ‘Violetta’, which

is a deep violet-purple. Both New York and

New England varieties like a moist, fertile soil,

but will grow in either sun or partial shade.

The Michaelmas daisy of the moment is a

hybrid between A.cordifolius and A. novi-belgii called ‘Little Carlow’. It has single

flowers of lilac-blue petals and yellow

centres, on sturdy stems, and flowers in late

September. It reaches 90 cm or more and

makes a good, dense clump with dark

green leaves.

Aster amellus ‘Violet Queen’ is one of the

Italian starworts, with short stems and violet

flowers. It likes an alkaline soil and good

drainage in winter. It comes from Central

and Eastern Europe.

Aster divaricatus, the so-called Wood

Aster, has the advantage of thriving in

shade, but needs some moisture to do well.

It has loose heads of white flowers with

yellow-brown disc florets, flowering from late

summer into autumn. While not striking it is

worth considering for its tolerance of partial

shade.

Aster ericoides ‘Golden Spray’ provides a

welcome change in hue, having heads of

small white, pink-tinged flowers with

conspicuous central golden discs. It likes a

well-drained but fertile soil in full sun and

grows to about 90 cm.

All asters benefit from a feed of blood,

fish and bone fertiliser followed by a mulch,

in spring. Michaelmas daises are best

planted or divided in spring or early summer,

when the leaves are above ground, but

before they develop flower stems. That is

also the time to stake established clumps

with pea sticks or unobtrusive plant supports,

which will be hidden as the plant grows.

Joe Pasquale on his Autumn ESP Tour

A s comedian Joe Pasquale prepares

for his Autumn ESP tour I took the time

to catch up with the man referred to

as a ‘national treasure’ to discuss life, the

universe and everything!!!

You’re a big reader, aren’t you?

What turned me on to reading was English O’

Level at school and the book that changed my

life about wanting to read was Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, then Lord Of The Flies. As a teenager, they had an impact on me of

how enjoyable a book can be, and I carried on

reading.

Since leaving the Jungle you have taken up

quite a few hobbies – are there any new ones

that you have taken up? Well, I still go boxing four times a week, and of

course I’ve got my pilot’s license, but I’ve now

taken up running and am planning on taking

part in next year’s Marathon. I’m currently run-

ning ten miles 3 or 4 times a week, building up to

18 miles a week. I also go to the gym to work

out with the pro boxers.

Boxing is a great thing, it teaches you how to

deal with your aggression; let it go, and then

stop. But I’m not an aggressive person at all; If

I’m sparring with someone at the gym I find my-

self apologising to people, even though you

shouldn’t say ‘sorry’ in a boxing ring!

In October, I’m starting an Open University

course in Geology; I wanted to be a geologist,

but I got run over when I was 13. I had plans to

go to university and be a geologist, but then I

had the accident and lost a year’s school and

was in hospital for about six months. I missed

the year when you chose your options, and

never caught up again.

You worked your way up in showbiz through

working as a comic at Pontins, but you also

appeared on New Faces.

What do you think of TV talent shows? I think they’re a gift but it depends which way

you look at it. Richard Holloway, the producer of

Britain’s Got Talent, was the producer of New

Faces when I did it, and executive producer

when I was doing The Price Is Right. People like

Richard and Simon Cowell have discovered

that there are as many nutters around now as

there were 20 years ago, and I was one of

them, and there was just as much entertain-

ment value in watching the auditions as the

actual show. BGT isn’t that different from New

Faces or Opportunity Knocks, in that they turn it

round and show you the audition process.

Who are your big comedy influences?

I was lucky enough to know Bob Monkhouse,

and was close to him at the end. He was a

great influence in my life and my attitude to the

business. He was a gentleman, with not a bad

word to say about anyone. I did New Faces,

and he asked me around and helped me get

onto other shows. Like him, I’d rather be liked.

Tell me about the new tour? Well it’s called the ESP Tour (Extra Sensory

Pasquale - Psychic Skills), it features all sorts of

craziness and a bit more of the ESP stuff. I’ve

always been quite intrigued by that sort of thing

and the way mind readers use it – but I just take

the mick out of it and people love it. My favour-

ite bits of the show are always the bits with the

audience. To be honest, it’s not something I

really believe in, though. When I was in the

Scouts, we used to go round collecting jumble,

and we’d sort through it for the good stuff be-

fore we handed it over. From one lot, I got a

lava lamp and a Ouija board, and me and my

mate Kevin and some others went into the

church and contacted a ghost called Colin, but

we don’t know if it was real or just somebody

pushing the board around. We got rid of the

board and put it back into the jumble!

I t looks like an Audi TT,

drives like an Audi TT – but

what’s that on the front?

A Lion. Surely not?

Well it is – this isn’t a

Bavarian offering, it’s

actually French: Meet the

new Peugeot RCZ. And it’s

a car you’re likely to be

seeing a fair few of, very

soon.

It’s been gathering quite

a following since it made its debut at the

Geneva Motor Show in 2008 and it represents

a huge leap forward for Peugeot.

Why? Well, this Peugeot has Audi’s

dominant TT well and truly in its sights and

with the marketing might of the French firm

behind it, and sensible pricing, few would

bet against its sales success.

It helps that the RCZ looks stunning too.

From the front, the car has the family

Peugeot nose – like a 3008, or other generic

Peugeot. But, walk around to the side and it

just gets better and better. Squat, aggressive

shoulders, a beautiful profile and a roof with

two gentle bumps – they really have got this

car spot on.

Inside it’s a comfortable, pleasant place

to be with chunky controls, supportive seats

and lots of visibility. The only real standout

bad point in the cabin is the somewhat flimsy

plastic which covers the transmission tunnel

and flexes nastily when you release the

handbrake. The rest of the car though has

some classy materials. The two silver strips on

the roof are aluminium and there are high-

grade leather coverings inside (in the GT

model) both combining to give the RCZ an

expensive, upmarket feel.

And that’s the clever bit – because the

RCZ really isn’t that expensive at all. The

entry-level model with a 156bhp, 1.6-litre

petrol, is just £20,450, rising to £25,050 for the

200bhp range topper. Compare this to the

Audi TT, which starts at £26,370 and Peugeot

already has the upper hand. Buyers just

need to get past any badge snobbery they

may be harbouring.

We tried the petrol GT model with 156bhp

petrol. This level gives buyers 19-inch alloys

and leather. Also included as standard are

heated front seats, front and rear parking

aid, auto-dipping mirrors for reversing, auto

lights, come home lighting and auto wipers.

The performance figures are not the most

exciting with a 0-60mph time of 8.3 seconds

and a top speed of 133mph. Having said

that, it still pushes on pretty well. There’s

good feel from the front wheels and in the

right hands you can still have a bit of fun.

However, it is at lower speeds and around

town where it really excels. What’s more, it’s

here buyers can show off those stunning

looks to pedestrians who’ll stand there open-

mouthed. Peugeot dealers must be feeling

rather smug right now. They’ve got a car with

the looks of a premium German

manufacturer for a relative bargain price –

and in these cost-conscious economic times,

that’s a real winner. By James Baggott, editor of Car DealerMagazine

W ith the tightening of economic

belts, holidays abroad are out of

the question for many. However

our country has many fine places on offer

– such as beautiful Bath, one of the

loveliest cities in England. A World

Heritage Site, the city is filled with cobbled

to add to its already impressive beauty,

the River Avon meanders through the

centre of town.

Bath Delights

The Roman temple and bathing complex,

Museums

There are several museums worth visiting in

Bath, not least of which is The American

Museum, which has period rooms showing

life in the colony from the first New England

settlers through to the Civil War. This

museum, the only one of its kind outside of

America, has a remarkable collection of

folk and decorative arts.

The Museum of Costume covers fashion

over the last 400 years and is reputed to be

the finest museum of fashionable garments

in the world.

Housed in the Countess of Huntingdon’s

beautiful gothic chapel, the Building of

Bath Museum shows how Georgian Bath

developed. It is a unique collection,

demonstrating the rich architectural history

of Bath.

The Bath Model is a fully detailed

architectural mock-up of the city centre as

it was in Georgian times.

The Holburne Museum of Art, founded

to display the collection of Sir William

Holburne, a sailor who grew up in Bath and

retired there, houses landscapes by Guardi

and Turner as well as portraits by Stubbs,

Ramsay, Raeburn, Zoffany and Bath’s own

famous artists, Thomas Gainsborough,

William Hoare and the Barkers of Bath.

Number One Royal Crescent was the

first house to be built in the fabulous Royal

Crescent, designed by John Wood in the

Palladian style. The house recreates

F ireworks can be incredibly frightening

to many pets, but with a bit of forward

planning there are lots of things you

can do to help keep your furry friends safe,

calm and happy.

It’s not just those characters with a generally

nervous disposition who can be scared,

even the normally-laid-back family Labrador

can become a trembling wreck once those

bangs start. Signs of distress can vary quite

widely between individual animals. Some

show really obvious signs of fear and agita-

tion including increased panting, hiding,

trembling and attention seeking behaviour.

Signs can range from pacing, destructive

behaviour and barking to depression and

an unwillingness to move.

Pre-Fireworks Night In the short-term, there are products avail-

cat or dog to cope with stressful situations.

For example for dogs DAP sprays, diffusers

and collars work by releasing a synthetic

version of a natural pheromone that is re-

leased by a bitch shortly after she has given

birth. This pheromone reassures newborn

puppies and it has been shown to help calm

adult dogs as well. For cats a similar prod-

uct called Feliway is available.

Zylkene tablets contain a milk protein that

creates a calming effect in a similar way to

the tranquiliser Valium (but without the side

effects). Special diets such as the Royal

Canin’s Calm range are also available,

Calm contains a milk protein with stress-

regulating properties and a serotonin pre-

cursor, a neurotransmitter with an essential

role in the regulation of anxiety. Both need

administering well before any stressful event

and you should speak to your Vet to discuss

these options.

Desensitising CDs for firework-phobic dogs

are available as a long-term potential solu-

tion to ease the stress of sudden loud noise.

The CDs should be played regularly as a

background noise. The idea is to start off

very quietly, at a level your dog is comfort-

able with, and aim to increase the volume

over a period of weeks and months.

Advice for on Fireworks Night It’s important to keep your dog inside once

the fireworks start, so plan ahead and make

sure any exercise and toileting is out of the

way in good time.

Keep your garden gate and doors shut, and

make sure your dog’s wearing his collar and

tag just in case he bolts in fear and escapes.

It’s important not to punish any signs of stress

or fear and remember to stay calm yourself.

Don’t over fuss your dog as this could indi-

cate that there is indeed something to be

frightened of.

Oral health Care Advice for Adults

By Nicola Harris

I t is important to con-

tinue a good oral

hygiene regime

through adulthood.

Even adults can get

cavities, as well as gum

disease which can lead to serious problems.

• Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste,

this removes the plaque from the teeth.

Plaque is the main cause of tooth decay.

• Limit the sugary sticky snacks. The more

often you snack in between meals, the

higher the chance of tooth decay.

• Visit your dentist regularly for checkups and

professional cleanings.

Flossing – this removes the plaque from be-

tween the teeth and under the gum line.

Take about 45cm (18inches) of floss and pull it

tight, slide it up and down against the tooth

surface and the gum line. When you move

onto the next tooth, wind the floss on to ex-

pose a fresh piece. If you find holding floss

difficult, you can buy ‘flossers’, which hold the

floss for you, enabling you to guide the floss

easier.

When you first start flossing your gums may

bleed. Don’t worry too much about this, as

you get better at the technique the gums will

become healthier, and this will reduce.

Interdental brushes can be used as an alter-

native to flossing. For further advice consult

with your dentist or hygienist.

What issues should I be aware of as an Adult?

Gum Disease – if plaque is not removed by

the brushing and flossing techniques previ-

ously described it can harden into tarter.

Tarter can only be removed by professional

cleaning. Thus it becomes a vicious circle

more plaque adheres to the tarter, it can get

under the gum line, the acids in the plaque

will attack the gums and make them red, and

puffy, you may also notice some bleeding. If

left, the gum disease can cause serious prob-

lems. The gums may start to come away from

the tooth, creating ‘pockets’, this allows even

more plaque to gather. Over time the plaque

will begin to eat away at the bone which

supports the tooth, eventually leading to re-

moval of the tooth.

Mouth Cancer - early signs of mouth cancer

can be something as simple as an ulcer that

does not go away. If you are over 40 a heavy

smoker or drinker you are more likely to be at

risk. If you have a mouth ulcer, a red or white

patch, a swelling or growth in your mouth that

lasts for more than two weeks, go and see

your dentist. It may be nothing, but a simple

check-up could just save your life. Remem-

ber, half those diagnosed with mouth cancer

die from the disease because it wasn’t

caught early enough.

Your dentist will have a good look at your

face and neck, as well as around your mouth

and tongue.

You can reduce your risk of mouth cancer

quite simply:-

• Stop smoking

• Cut down on alcohol

• Eat a healthy diet (at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetable’s every day)

Dental Abscesses – these can occur when

decay is left untreated, it eventually reaches

the nerve of the tooth causing infection and

death of the tooth. The bacteria then

spreads into the root and forms an abscess.

Dental abscesses are easy to diagnose, pain

on chewing on a particular tooth, if the pain is

less easily defined the dentist may tap the

tooth, and take an x-ray. To treat an abscess

the dentist will need to deal with the infection

first, either by draining the abscess, or through

a process called root canal treatment

(removing the dead tissue and nerves from

inside the root of the tooth). The dentist may

also prescribe antibiotics. By avoiding treat-

ment, it may be one of the reasons for ab-

scesses starting.

Aching Jaw – this is often related to stress,

tiredness, or anxiety. It is caused by the in-

creased tension of the muscles surrounding

the jaw. Painkillers and sedatives may relive

the symptoms short term. You may also need

to consider relaxation techniques. If you grind

your teeth at night you could also wear a

‘biteguard’ to limit the damage.

Peterborough based tax and accountancy specialist

TaxAssist Accountants gives advice on financial matters to

small businesses. Q During the year I traded in my old car

and purchased a new car for my busi-

ness under the scrappage scheme. How

do I deal with this in my accounts and

tax return?

A When a vehicle is purchased for busi-

ness use, the cost of the vehicle is

treated as capital expenditure and al-

though the cost is not deducted from

your trade income, capital allowances

can be claimed which reduce the

amount of profits charged to tax.

When a business has taken advantage

of the scrappage scheme, when pur-

chasing a new vehicle, capital allow-

ances are available on the amount ac-

tually paid for the car, i.e. the net

amount paid after the £2,000 deduc-

tion.

The car that has been traded in under

the scheme is treated as having

been scrapped, so the £2,000 discount is

not treated as consideration for the old

vehicle. The £2,000 does not need to be

declared as taxable disposal proceeds

for capital allowances purposes.

Where a sole trader or partnership busi-

ness has taken advantage of the scrap-

page scheme, adjustments must be

made to the capital allowances claims

for private use

Q I have just been made redundant and

my employer has offered me a redun-

dancy package of almost £80,000. The

managing director has told me that I will

get £30,000 of this tax free - is that

true? He has also asked if I would like

the settlement amount to be paid after

my official leaving date. He has told me

I will pay less tax if he delays my pay-

ment - is this true, or is he just trying to

improve his cashflow situation?

A Where an individual is made redun-

dant a tax-free amount of up to £30,000

can be paid, but care must be taken as

not all termination payments qualify. In

order to qualify as a tax-free payment,

the sum must relate specifically to the

cessation of the employment, rather

than to duties already performed or to

be performed in the future.

There are special rules for payments

which are made to an employee after

the cessation date of their contract. The

leaver's form P45 will show the gross pay

and tax deducted up to the date of

leaving and the final PAYE code that

was operated. Any payments made

after the P45 has been prepared must

be subjected to a BR PAYE code, which

means basic rate tax is deducted from

the gross amount.

The above treatment of payments is-

sued after the P45 means that higher

rate tax payers receive an ini-

tial cashflow advantage. It is important

to note, however, that this is simply de-

fering the higher rate tax due. The in-

come will need to be declared on a self

assessment return and the tax will need

to be paid by 31 January following the

tax year in which the sum is received. If

you receive a lump sum payment this

summer that will be assessable on the

tax return for the year ending 5

April 2011 and therefore any additional

tax due must be paid to reach the Col-

lector by 31 January 2012.

Where termination payments consist of

a number of different sums relating to

loss of office, payment in lieu of notice,

holiday pay and possibly disability ele-

ments and free shares, the tax situation

can be very complex.

Book Review - Books to Commemorate Black History Month

O ctober is Black History Month, and as part of the events and celebrations

taking place, we’ve put together a

collection of the best books to

commemorate black history: important

events, great people - and their stories.

Dreams from My Father

by Barrack Obama

Written by the US

president Barack Obama

when he was 33, Dreams is his best-selling story of

trying to find meaning in

life as a black American.

His journey follows his

search for answers about

his estranged father,

taking him to Kansas, Hawaii and Kenya to

explore his family’s roots. Well-written and

insightful, this memoir is an unforgettable

read.

Long Walk to Freedom

by Nelson Mandela

The fascinating and

famous story of Nelson

Mandela is told here in

his autobiography.

Profiling his childhood,

education and the 27

years he spent in prison,

as well as his political

career and belief that

the issues surrounding

apartheid in South Africa continue to be a

problem. An incredible story of an

inspirational man, this book proves that

anything really is possible.

Rough Crossings: Britain, The Slaves and

the American Revolution

by Simon Schama

This book tells the story of thousands of

African-American slaves who fled the

plantations to fight behind British lines in the

American War of Independence, only to

find the promises of land to repay their

service betrayed. Schama’s story-telling is

powerful and gripping, with detail and

passion behind every element, from the

war and the involvement of British

abolitionists, to the slaves final crossing to

Africa, where they hoped that freedom

would finally greet them.

NEW RELEASE

Martin Luther King

by Godfrey Hodgson A new biography of the

iconic leader which

journeys from his birth in

Atlanta in 1929, through

his part in the Civil Rights

movement, to King’s

assassination in Memphis

at the age of 39.

Shedding light on every aspect of an

extraordinary life: the Black Baptist milieu in

which King was raised, his morals and

beliefs, his courage and campaigning

energy, his repeated sexual infidelities. A

complete and well-researched portrait of a

man who fought inequality and changed

history.

Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry

by Mildred D. Taylor This Newberry Medal-winning novel tells the

story of Cassie Logan, a black child growing

up in the shadow of the American Civil War,

when racism and segregation remained

huge problems for the black community in

‘the South’. Told through the eyes of

innocence, this novel is extremely effective

at communicating what life was like at this

time, the importance of having land and

the fear created by hatred and prejudice.

Desert Flower by Waris Dirie An incredible story of a life of extremes, told

with humility and grace. Having grown up

in a large Somalian nomad family, Waris

survived both a lion attack and the tradition

of female genital mutilation, before the

prospect of being married to a 60 year-old

stranger forced her to run away. Eventually

finding herself working as a maid in

England, Waris is now a successful model

and campaigner against female

circumcision: her story is inspirational,

incredible and not-to-be-missed.

For October 2010

By Astrologer Christine Chalklin

Celestial movements during October - October becomes more passionate and intense

as the love planets Venus and Mars continue on through powerful Scorpio. Relation-

ships come up for review with Uranus and Jupiter now moving backwards in romantic Pisces. Delving

into our needs and wants becomes increasingly important. Communicative Mercury rushes through

harmonious Libra from the 4th to the 20th; this urges balanced thinking and charming and diplomatic

means of expression.

LIBRA SEPT. 23 - OCT. 23 Your birthday month brings your financial

situation into the spotlight. Mars and

Venus encourage deep introspection,

but a lovely aspect with expansive and

bountiful Jupiter could bring lots of good luck your

way. The new moon in your sign on the 7th heralds

the start of creative new projects.

SCORPIO OCT.24 - NOV.22 October starts with some fresh and in-

vigorating energy. Mars, one of your

planetary rulers, is now in your sign and

along with Venus they will be firing you up

for some exciting new ventures. You can expect

your love life to be active and energetic as bold

impulses fire up the flames of romance!

SAGITTARIUS NOV. 23 - DEC. 21 October turns your attention towards the

demands in your personal life. Striking a

balance between energy spent on work

and energy spent on domestic matters is

essential now. It is time to prioritise, expan-

sive and optimistic Jupiter fires you up, but you do

run the risk of overextending yourself.

CAPRICORN DEC. 22 - JAN. 20 In October your communication style is in

the spotlight. A blast of personal energy

comes your way as expansive Jupiter and

unconventional Uranus return to imagina-

tive Pisces. Showing your leadership skills is important

now, but inspired with new confidence you’re at

your most convincing.

AQUARIUS JAN. 21 - FEB. 18 October continues the theme of finances

and generally reviewing things. Your

sense of achievement is heightened and

it is a good time to develop new business

plans and goals. With Mars and Venus at the top of

your chart, it’s also time to focus on your standing in

society and as a professional.

PISCES FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20 There is a flurry of excitement for Pisceans

during October. Innovative Uranus is also

back in your sign and the spotlight is on

you. You want to shine, and with intuition

and wisdom on your side it’s a good time to make

new plans. Mars and Venus in powerful Scorpio

open your mind to exciting and challenging ideas.

ARIES MARCH 21 - APRIL 20 Finances loom large during October, Mars

and Venus, both in Scorpio in the monetary

area of your chart demand a review.

Benevolent Jupiter comes into play with

Mars on the 24th and this may turn out to be a very

favoured day. Innovative ideas abound, so do keep

your eyes open for new opportunities.

TAURUS APRIL 21 - MAY 21 In October, the love planet Venus is in your

opposite sign of Scorpio. She’s moving

backwards from the 8th and you’ll need to

scrutinise your resources and your relation-

ships very carefully. What is not working and what

has to go? The warrior planet Mars is also in Scorpio,

there could be some radical change!

GEMINI MAY 22 - JUNE 21 October brings a flurry of excitement in the

health and work area of your chart. New

career opportunities could now become

apparent as Mars energises this sector.

With Venus, the planet of beauty, now in Scorpio,

you’ll also be looking at radical ways to change your

appearance and improve your health.

CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22 Fun, games, romance and more fun is on

the agenda for you during October! This

should turn out to be a transformational

month as you review your relationships and

decide if they are going where you want them to or

not. Creativity is also highlighted and your mind will

be full of new and inspirational ideas.

LEO JULY 23 - AUGUST 23 There is plenty of activity on the home

front for Lions during October. Venus is

calling - what needs improving and how

can you make it beautiful and Regal

enough for yourself and your family? With Inspirational

Mercury in creative Libra it shouldn’t be too hard to

start up new projects.

VIRGO AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 22 October’s planetary aspects bring passion

and depth to normally reserved Virgoans.

Maverick planet Uranus and Expansive

Jupiter are back in the relationship area of

your chart, causing you to review your partnerships

on all levels. Communication is on the agenda, but

with a completely new angle.

Trick or Treat! It’s that haunting time of year again, October, Halloween,

I know some people love it, to be honest, I’m not keen,

The kids’ costumes look quite dreadful; and I cannot tell a lie,

I don’t like ghouls or ghosties and I don’t like Pumpkin Pie,

I don’t like wizened wizards and I don’t like Trick or Treat,

With my path crammed full of ghostly folks I just don’t want to meet,

But I do put coins aside for them, or chocolate perhaps, instead,

‘Cos another thing I hate, are bad eggs whizzing past my head,

And I thought it was for youngsters, they get older every year,

Last year they had moustaches; smelt of cannabis and beer,

But I don’t think they’ll be back, as they were certainly not amused,

When all they got were lollipops and tiny penny chews,

Let’s hope that Halloween this year will pass without a hitch,

I sure don’t need a costume to behave just like a witch!

G uarding our family against the on-

slaught of many viruses, bacteria

and fungi that can lead to many

health problems, it is more important to

choose the right remedial route to heal

health problems and to prevent. Silver Shield

is your natural guard and is extremely effec-

tive and versatile against many ailments.

In the light of recent news bacterial resis-

tance to commonly used antibiotics has

increased in recent years, particularly with

hospital-acquired infections. As a natural

antibiotic and anti-septic Silver Shield is a

must have in any family’s first aid cupboard

as the healthy alternative. Silver Shield is a

true, colloidal silver product and contains

the only colloidal silver product backed by a

patent. Research into the use of silver for

medical and other purposes has led to the

development of silver nanoparticles, micro-

scopic-sized silver particles that are less than

a billionth of a meter in diameter. These

particles at 14 parts per million (ppm) are

electrically charged and therefore are in

suspension within the deionised, purified

water. This ensures consistency within the

solution preventing the particles from settling

and collecting at the bottom of the bottle.

When consumed the colloidal silver deacti-

vates the enzymes responsible for the me-

tabolism and multiplication of bacteria,

fungi and viruses. Taken internally, the rec-

ommended dose is one teaspoon for pre-

vention and 2-3 teaspoons daily for fighting

infections. It can be used on cuts, scrapes

and as drops for the

eyes.

Scientific research

demonstrates that this

form of silver has re-

markable effects on a

wide range of micro-

organisms, viruses, pro-

tozoa, amoeba, fungi

and yeasts. It is a po-

tent germ fighter, can

be used internally as well as topically, helps

you to maintain a healthy immune system, is

completely non-toxic without the risk of

heavy metal contamination and also acts

as an approved surface disinfectant. It is

very effective for sore throat, eyes, ear/sinus

and skin infections, diarrhoea, cold/flues

and many, many more.

Silver Shield Gel is another product for topi-

cal application and is manufactured with a

patented process called Aqua Sol Technol-

ogy and uses only the finest particle size

colloids to ensure maximum bio-availability

and efficiency, providing 24 ppm of silver in

a clear moisturising gel. Wiping silver shield

Cosmetic Gel onto your face will kill any

bacteria present giving you a more re-

freshed, youthful appearance and also ap-

plying it to any scars or wounds seems to

help make it heal quicker. Made with food-

grade ingredients Silver Shield Gel contains

no alcohol and is safe for children.

The colloidal silver in silver shield will not

cause agyria or discolouration of the skin. It

is approved as non-toxic by the EPA and is

safe for regular use.

Cycling for LeisureCycling for LeisureCycling for LeisureCycling for Leisure

H ere we have another cycling route you can enjoy with your fam-

ily, a great way to get to know Peterborough. ‘The Crown Lake

Link’ is a 11.5 mile route that starts at the Serpentine Green Shopping

Centre in Hampton before joining up with the Green Wheel and

heading out towards the Crown Lakes Country Park. The route contin-

ues into the Fens, passing through Farcet along the River Nene to Park

Farm and Stanground. Heading towards the city centre, before cy-

cling along the Embankment and the Nene Valley Railway, through

the Ortons over Fletton Parkway which, returns you to Hampton.

This route is suitable for families as the majority is on quiet lanes, although some on-road cy-

cling and negotiation of junctions is required. Therefore suitable for experienced cyclists.

This should take approx. one hour 30 minutes to complete at an average speed of 8mph.

See map and directions below.

Directions:

1. Start at the rear of serpentine Green and take

the path leading to Silver Hill and continues onto

Eagle Way.

2. Continue on Eagle Way until reaching the junction

with London Road. Join the cycle path signed The

Green Wheel for Farcet. At approx. 2 miles cross over

the railway lines using the bridge.

3. Turn right onto Haddon Way and at the top of the

road turn left onto Braodway.

4. Turn right onto Main Street, then left onto Cross

street and at the end turn right onto the cycle path.

5. Cross the bridge alongside Milk and Water Drove,

use the underpass to cross Whittlesey Road and con-

tinue alongside the stream until reaching Stanground Lock. Turn left and follow The Green

Wheel signs for City Centre.

6. Turn right onto Daffodil grove, then left onto North Street and left again onto Mount Pleasant.

7. As Mount Pleasant merges with Church Street turn right and head on the path in front of the

church and continue through the underpass, before turning right.

8. Take the next left on the downhill track that lead to the Embankment. Continue along the

River Nene, passing the Key theatre before crossing the traffic lights on London Road. Cross the

River Nene on the Town Bridge before turning right down the ramp signed for Ferry Meadows.

Continue on the cycle path that runs alongside the river.

9. Cross the bridge, signed Wellingtonia Cycleway for Woodston and Orton and continue

alongside the Nene Valley Railway before crossing the railway tracks at the end of the path.

Turn right over the wooden bridge, signed Orton Mere and Ferry Meadows. Immediately after

crossing the bridge turn left.

10. After passing Orton Mere Railway Station make a left and continue onto Orton Mere. Cross

Oundle Road and head straight across to The Village, before joining up with Mogswell Lane.

11. Leave Mogsewell Lane and turn Left onto Herlington, before immediately turning right onto

Malborne Way. Continue along Malborne Way before coming off-road and using the foot and

cycle bridge to cross back into Hampton.

12. From the bridge turn left onto Lady Charlotte Road. Turn right onto Holly Walk and then

cross the roundabout with Hargate Way and continue onto Silver Hill. Return to Serpentine

Green.

“My world has opened out, filled up with challenges and complications

and possibilities.”

Cathy Cassidy is a successful and very

talented author of Dizzy, Indigo Blue, Drift-

wood, Sundae Girl, Scarlett, Gingersnaps,

Lucky Star, Angel Cake and now Cherry

Crush; the first book in the series of ‘The

Chocolate Box Girls’.

Cherry Costello and her dad move to

Somerset with the quirky and unique

Charlotte – Cherry’s dad’s new girlfriend;

and her four daughters. Cherry feels finally

accepted and part of a real family with

Coco, Summer and Skye, but it’s obvious

that the gorgeous and outgoing eldest

sister - Honey; doesn’t want anything to do

with her. What makes matters worse, how-

ever hard Cherry fights

it, she’s slowly falling in

love with Honey’s boy-

friend - Shay, can she

really compete with her

stepsister and is the

feeling mutual between

Cherry and Shay?

This enchanting book really captures the

motives behind Cherry’s stories and wild

imagination to come up with a few white

lies to make herself fit in to this new family.

Their lives seem pretty much perfect, but

with spiteful Honey, love sickening Shay

and so many heavenly chocolate truffles

thrown into the mixture, life isn’t all sweet.

Released on the 2nd September this de-

lightful book will capture your imagination

and have you on a whirl wind tour!
