Taylor Anderson (Melvin P. Thorpe) This is Taylor's first show in Iowa.

He has participated in numerous shows with the Merely Players of

Mankato, Minnesota. To prepare for this role, he spent two weeks

shadowing the Phelps family, and learning their ways. He now feels that

no evil shall escape his righteous rage. He would like to thank you for

coming, if it wasn't for you all, he wouldn't have a reason for doing this.

Please enjoy the show.

Emily Basili (Costume Supervisor) is 24 years old and has been involved

with theatre productions since she was four. She has worked with Mills

Masquers Theatre in Glenwood, IA; William Penn University Theatre;

music video production with All4Beatz in Chicago; and Man of La Mancha

at ICCT. This is her first time as costume supervisor. "Learning a new

aspect to the magic of theatre really excites me. I love working with the

actors’ individual ideas of who their characters are and making it flow with

the director's vision for the show. Enjoy!"

Cary Beatty (Governor Briscoe) retired after a 30-year career, teaching

English and German, most recently at Kennedy High School in Cedar

Rapids. Cary is enjoying the time to renew his interest in community

theatre. Beginning with 1776 at ICCT in 1984, Cary continues to

appreciate the benefit local theatre brings to our area. Thanks to the

audience for supporting local, LIVE theatre.

Valerie Davine Bills (Doatsy Mae Grimes) has most recently performed

with City Circle (Oliver!), Dreamwell (1984, Death of a Salesman, Why

Torture is Wrong) and Iowa City Community Theatre's AACTFest-winning

one-act (Laundry and Bourbon). She is excited to be back in Texas with

ICCT--thank you to Susan, Charissa, Jeffrey, and this very fun cast and

crew!

Charissa L. Hamel (Vocal Director) has a degree in Music Performance

from Graceland University, and has spent the last four years working as a

musician/artist in Santa Barbara, CA. She has recently moved back to

Iowa and is very happy to be back at ICCT. She grew up in this theater

and it helped mold the artist she is today.

Robert Hamel (Set Designer) returns to ICCT after 12 years of Educational

Theatre at Graceland University and Westmont College. "Susan and I raised

our children in this theatre, and this feels like coming back home. It’s

wonderful to work with old friends, exciting to meet the new generation and

comforting to remember those who went before us." Bob's designs for ICCT

have included Streetcar Named Desire, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest,

Big River, and Man of La Mancha, to name a few. Bob's professional

designs have been seen nationally, from New Hampshire to California, and

internationally, in Peking, Macedonia, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in

London, and Mexico City.

Susan Hamel (Director) Over the past 10 years, Susan has been working

with theatres across the country, from Anchorage, AK, to Morgantown, WV.

She had the honor of directing the Chicago area's first non-equity production

of The Producers. Most recently, she has been working with the Writers'

Bloc of Chicago, an incubator for new plays, staging festival readings and

first productions. Previous ICCT credits include: Amadeus, Inherit the Wind,

Taming of the Shrew, Big River, A Streetcar named Desire, Of Thee I Sing,

One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, and Man of la Mancha.

Mary House (Ensemble) has been member of Combined Efforts Theater

and their dance group since 2013. Her first play with CET was Summer

Magic At The County Fair. She was also in Camo!, a CET and ICCT

collaboration. This play is her first with just ICCT.

Diviin Huff (Ruby Rae/Reporter 2) has enjoyed being a part of her third

production here at the Iowa City Community Theater! Her favorite rolls

include Della in The Royal Family and Nurse in Romeo and Juliet. Her other

roles have included Wilder in My Five Husbands and Pam & Lisa in Love,

Lost & What I Wore. She has also played Nessa in The Luck of the Irish.

This is Diviin's seventh show in Iowa City and is so humbled and exuberant

about performing for you tonight! Enjoy the show!

Marcia Hughes (Miss Mona Stangley) is proud to join this wonderful

company for her first ICCT show. She has appeared with Riverside Theatre,

Old Creamery Theatre, City Circle Acting Company, Cedar Rapids Opera

Theatre, Englert Theatre, and Hancher Auditorium. Favorite roles include

Patsy Cline, Mama Rose, and Mother Superior. She has also been featured

with Dan Knight, Vanguard Jazz Collective, I-380 Express, and the Rod

Pierson Big Band. Offstage, she manages communications and volunteer

services for the Cedar Rapids Schools. Love to Scot, Spencer, Katie, and

Luke. Welcome to our Little Bitty Pissant Country Place!

Heather Johnson (Shy) is pleased to portray Shy in her musical debut.

Other appearances include Psycho Beach Party as Berdine, Death of a

Salesman, The Proposal, Grandpa Hangs the Holly, and Salem's Daughter.

She has also worked backstage for Riverside Theatre and Dreamwell

Theatre.

Trista Carlson Kimmel (Dawn, Imogene Charlene, Governor's Aide) I'm

the illegitimate love-child of strategy and creativity, but neither one will admit

to having me. I enjoy three-day weekends, high heels, tap dancing (thanks

for cutting that part from the show, Jeffrey!), sushi, wine, long walks on the

beach…wait, what? One time I held down a day job for the schools, owned

& operated a massage therapy clinic, participated in this production AND

kept my husband and dog sorta happy. Did it take a highly creative

strategist? No, just a woman who cares enough about entertaining you to

run around singing show tunes-that's me! Enjoy the show!

Michael Levy (Aggie boy) is a native Iowan and delighted to be singing and

dancing in his first musical. He has acted in some Combined Efforts

productions over the past few years. He enjoys swimming and is studying

nursing at Kirkwood.

Carole Martin (Linda Lou) was last seen on stage as Becky in Becky's New

Car, for Dreamwell. For ICCT, she has played Truvy in Steel Magnolias,

Babe in Crimes of the Heart, the Queen in Cinderella, and Jeanette in Last

of the Red Hot Lovers, among others. She has done shows for MVLCT, City

Circle, Usher's Ferry, and TCR, and has "shot" some commercials for

Midwest Shooting. Carole's favorite roles are wife to Dean Martin, and mom

to Noelle, Marcus, Lance and Garett, whom she thanks for supporting her

passion for the theater.

Angela McConville-Laffey (Beatrice/MPT Assistant) Watch Angela as she

emerges from hiding to perform onstage for the first time in 20 years. If we

are going to be perfectly honest, she has played the role of whore offstage

many times during her hiatus and would probably complain about being

typecast, if she wasn't so damn excited to sing and dance **insert excessive

smiley-faces and exclamation points here**! Recent behind-the-scenes

credits include: Death of a Salesman (Assistant Director and phone ringer -

uncredited); and Beyond Therapy (Stage Manager and phone ringer -

uncredited). Both were Dreamwell productions.

Katie McKibben (Production Assistant) has done quite a bit of backstage

work at the Marshalltown Community Theatre (her hometown) over the

years and is thrilled to be volunteering for her first Iowa City Community

Theatre production. She is a University of Iowa graduate and has worked as

a Communications Specialist with UI Health Care for the last nine years.

“I’m pleased to be involved in the performing arts again and excited to meet

a new group of creative, like-minded people.”

Emily McKnight (Ginger, Townswoman) was born in Iowa City and active

in theater and vocal performance at City High and Truman State University.

By day, she operates the Better Plants and Gardens landscaping business,

and when not outside with her "Team Cheekbones" crew (including rescued

and foster kitten interns), spends her time as a photographer and graphic

designer. She recently discovered ICCT volunteering and attending shows

with her father (Steve Hall), and has served as its photographer last season

and parts of this. She is excited to be making her ICCT stage debut as

Ginger in this energetic show.

Beverly E. Mead (Reporter 1) has been involved in community theatre for

44 years (yes, she's that old!!), from Northwest Iowa to Southeast Iowa.

Favorite roles have included Yenté in Fiddler On the Roof (Washington Y's

Men), Aunt Abby in Arsenic and Old Lace (Cherokee [IA] Community

Theater), Ouiser in Steel Magnolias (ICCT) and Big Mama in Cat On a Hot

Tin Roof (ICCT). She is very grateful to the director, cast and crew for

allowing her to be involved in this production of Whorehouse, though she's

sorry not to be one of the "girls". Guess it's that "age" thing! Enjoy the

show, folks!

Jeffrey Allen Mead (Musical Director) is a student at Kirkwood Community

College, and no stranger to ICCT and Corridor audiences, having played

the roles of Jud in Oklahoma! and Gooper in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at ICCT,

the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz at Theatre Cedar Rapids, and

Tommy in The Who’s ‘Tommy’ at Washington Community Theater, to name

just a few, and having directed music for Urinetown, The Rocky Horror

Show, and Schoolhouse Rock: LIVE!, all with City Circle.

Joe Mozena (Edsel Mackey) Born to perform, his first role came as

Baby Jesus at just two weeks old. Since then, he's kept busy with music,

theater, poetry, mathematics and gaming. Never one to keep still for too

long, he's traveled almost everywhere in the country, and hopes to take on

the rest of the world some day. After taking an extended hiatus from

community theater, this is his second show at ICCT this season, the first

being Damn Yankees in the fall of 2015.

Lacy Papazis (Angel) This is Lacy's second production for ICCT, and also

second role as a 'whore'! Her first one was in the musical, Dr. Jekyll &

Hyde, and she's super excited to give it another go! Other productions

include Psycho Beach Party, A Christmas Carol, Titanic, and Hairspray.

Stephen Polchert (Props) When not scrounging or building props for local

community theatres, Stephen works at the UI College of Law and is

finishing a historical novel.

Payton Proud (Choreographer) This is Payton's second show

choreographing for ICCT and it has been a blast! She would like to thank

the entire cast for making this a fun and positive experience. She hopes you

enjoy the show!

Jordan Running (Aggie Boy) No bio provided.

Jake Vander Schel (Aggie Boy) is an Iowa City native, currently studying

Computer Software Engineering at The University of Iowa. He is a newbie

to ICCT, and it has been many years since his former acting and musical

roles in grade school. Outside of school, he works at the West Music

Fulfillment Center in Coralville and as a member of “Team Cheekbones” for

the Better Plants and Gardens landscaping business with Emily McKnight.

He thanks his family, friends, and fellow cast members for their patience

and support in his debut.

Don Schneider (Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd) is a Lifetime Member, back after a

lengthy hiatus. His last role was ICCT’s 2003 One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s

Nest, as a damaged man who swore a lot... Don received his MFA in

Theatre Technology from UW-Madison before joining the faculty at the

University of Arkansas. He returned to Iowa, and is Technical Director for

Cornell College Theatre. Don thanks his wife Kris, and kids Christopher &

Nicholas for their support. He dedicates this performance to his father, a

man who couldn’t really help him with this theatre obsession thing, but

definitely taught him a thing or two about swearing.

John Shang (C.J. Scruggs) is super excited to be a part of this production

of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. John has appeared in last year's

summer opera of The Gondoliers, as well as Patience, through The

University of Iowa School of Music. John hopes you enjoy the show and

attend more Iowa City Community Theatre productions in the future!

Ryann Sirois (Ensemble) has acted with Combined Efforts Theatre since

2002. She enjoys dancing, painting and watching old movies and television

shows. Her favorite is "Green Acres".

Evie Stanske (Stage Manager/Miss Wulla Jean) is happy to be working

with Susan again. It has been far too long! Evie was last seen as Mama

Spumoni in Combined Efforts Theatre's production of The Lollipop Files.

Kurt Stevenson (Lighting Designer) has been involved with various

technical aspects of theater for many of the community theatre companies

in the Iowa City area for over 20 years. He is currently employed as an IT

support tech for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Eric A. Teeter (Mayor Rufus Poindexter/Reporter 3) is a native of

Southeast Iowa, spending his formative years in Mt. Pleasant. Favorite

roles include Felix in The Odd Couple, Philip in Ten Little Indians and

Ensemble in The Laramie Project. Backstage credits include directing

Arsenic and Old Lace, The Nerd, and Doubt; house crew for A Streetcar

Named Desire; and Stage Manager for A Dog's Life and The Queen of

Bingo. He is excited to return to the stage in Iowa City, after making his

debut in Dreamwell's 1984 last fall, and looks forward to many exciting

opportunities in the Corridor.

Austin Wedemeyer (Senator) “Many thanks to Director Susan and her

team, Charissa and Jeff, for this opportunity. I’d like to thank Mary for her

support and encouragement. I enjoy working with this wonderful cast, too.

They’re full of energy and enthusiasm and I learn something from each one.

My recent efforts in the theater include Juror # 9 in 12 Angry Men; the butler

in Gigi; and the judge in Bridal Terrorism. I have also been active in the

Musical Comedy Troupe of Iowa City, and The Nutcracker."

Mary Haaf Wedemeyer (Jewel Mosley) Over the years, Mary has

performed with ICCT, Dreamwell Theatre, City Circle, Combined Efforts; in

addition, The Chicago Writers' Bloc and New Play Festival. Her most recent

acting credits include Death of a Salesman (The Woman), Bridal Terrorism

(Betty), Love Loss and What I Wore (Lynne), Change in Direction (Carol),

Carousel (Nettie), Gigi (Mamita), and Nine Parts of Desire (Nanna). You will

also find Mary in a local group, Musical Comedy Troupe of Iowa City

performing to retirement/nursing homes. She would like to thank Austin, her

friends and family for their continued support.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

For more than ten years, ICCT was my artistic home. Having directed for the 40th anniversary season, I really wanted an opportunity to come back for the 60th. When I was approached to direct The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, I asked to see the script first. I had never read or seen this musical, though I had heard maybe two songs that had made the pop charts. And I had, of course, heard about the movie, though to this day I still have not seen it. On first read, I was delighted, and somewhat surprised, to find a script with depth, a meaningful storyline, and relatable characters.

Based on historical people and events, this play turns the concepts of "good people" and "bad people" inside out. While presenting itself as a somewhat bawdy musical comedy, at heart it's about home, values, and perceptions.

They were working ladies, providing a valued service, and not causing harm to anyone. Yet they were run out of their home, primarily because one man -one bombastic and attention seeking television personality - decided to make it his "mission of the month" to run them out of town....

When I walked into this building a few weeks ago, I was struck by how little has changed. When I entered the lobby, the first things to catch my eye were the beautiful handmade benches, built for courtroom scenes in the 40th anniversary production of Inherit the Wind. I made my way to the costume loft, and was elated to find familiar clothing pieces from way back when. But the icing on the cake for me, the wooden wheelchair used in my first ICCT production of Amadeus is still in working order, and is now a part of this production, more than twenty years later.

Much of the building has not changed, other than cosmetically. But much of the way ICCT is working has changed, and for the better. I have very much appreciated the support of the board, fully functioning committees, and individuals who have welcomed me back, and given me wonderful production, promotion, and front of house support. Much thanks to you all!

It's good to be home,

Susan

Steve is a comparative newcomer to ICCT. Since joining during the 2011-12 season, he has served on the board as a member at large, President, and currently resides as Past President of the Executive Board. He’s also donated endless hours to the successes of each show, utilizing his talents for set construction on the majority of shows since his arrival, helped to run Exodus and Insodus each year and even dabbled in some impressive scenic design for a handful of productions. Steve has also donated substantial sums each year, sponsored multiple productions, and this past year, Steve made a generous donation of more than $45,000 to assist Iowa City Community Theatre in the purchase of our incredible new riser system and chairs.

Steve was recently added to ICCT’s Lifetime Members, and rightfully so. Seldom is there a person who immerses themselves so completely and loyally to a cause for the betterment of our community. He’s committed to this organization and continually strives to increase its successes.

ICCT is forever grateful for your support and passion, Steve.

“From the moment we enter the space, we are trans-

ported... A Powerful rendition of a story that never goes out of fashion.” Man of La

“Where to begin when talking about a production this good? ... Everyone. Every person, everybody. Used in a sentence:

Everyone should go see this show.” Spelling Bee — Iowa

Theatre Blog, David Pierce

“They hit all the jokes with the right comic timing, and the choreography is carried out with snappy precision. It's always a delight to see musical theatre performed with such care and confidence, particularly when the piece itself is so engaging.” The Fantasticks — Iowa Theatre Blog, James E. Trainor III

“My entire family was delighted and engaged by the show, from the hyper five-year-old to the sardonic 12-year-old.” Annie — Iowa Theatre Blog, Sharon Falduto

“...this is a great ensemble, and they navigate this jagged

journey of a script with skill and intensity.” 12 Angry

Men — Iowa Theatre Blog, James Trainor III

“I was lucky enough to have a 9-year-old along with me for the review, and she — a little girl who can barely sit through an episode of over-stimulating Disney Channel tripe before getting bored - sat motionless and riveted throughout the entire final act. Well done, Agatha and ICCT.” And Then There Were None — Iowa Theatre Blog, Andrew Juhl

“If you’re the sort of person who loves musicals you absolutely won’t be disappointed by this one. If you’re the sort who thinks they’re corny, I’d advise you to see this one anyway—you may just be surprised by how enjoyable it is.” Oklahoma! — Iowa Theatre Blog, Sharon Falduto

“This is a good show. Top to bottom.” Last of the

Red Hot Lovers — Iowa Theatre Blog, Brad Quinn

We can help your business get broader exposure in Iowa City and Johnson County. This is usually done by advertising in our playbills, but can also be by sponsorship of shows, elements of shows, or specific actors.

We are always in need of new and interested individuals for help at the community theatre in a number of different capacities: acting, directing, back stage, and at the front of the house. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us at [email protected].
