Dear Friends,

We live in an age when our media love to build up and idolise

celebrities, only to turn on them and cast them down just a little while

later. But I cannot remember any previous example where the

transformation from popular saint to outcast sinner has been quite so

abrupt and complete as with the late Jimmy Savile.

The flood of allegations against him seems to leave little room for doubt

about the truth behind them. And we need to be clear that the sort of

sexual abuse and exploitation that he is accused of is totally wrong and

causes huge damage to many of its victims.

But I am left wondering about all the good that he was previously

known and celebrated for. I suppose it is possible that he was an out

and out hypocrite, who only used his charitable work as a cover and

opportunity to indulge the darker side which has now emerged. But

somehow I doubt it.

It seems far more likely that he was more like the rest of us than we

care to admit — a mixture of good and bad. Genuine good, that is, but

mixed with real badness, so that neither the good nor the bad on its own

is an adequate description of what he was like.

One of the many problems with our ‘celebrity culture’ is that it cannot

cope with such mixtures. It insists on making people one or the other.

But the reality is that all of us are like that. We like to think of

ourselves as basically good, and that may be the impression that we

manage to leave with others around us, at least most of the time. But

we all have a darker side as well.

It will show itself in different ways, but all of us have things in our lives

— things we have done (or not done), things we have said, things we

have thought — that we are (or ought to be) ashamed of, whether or not

anyone else knows of them at the moment. But as Jesus warned (and

we have now seen demonstrated in the case of Jimmy Savile), “There is

nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be

made known. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the

daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms

will be proclaimed from the roofs.” (Luke 12:2-3)

In the light of that sobering reality the good news which we celebrate at

Christmas shines all the more brightly. As the angel expressed it to

Joseph in Matthew 1:21, “you are to give him [the baby] the name

Jesus, because he will save his people from all their sins.” All of us are

sinners, however saintly we may appear on the outside for now, and

whatever genuine good there may also be in our lives. But Jesus came

to deal with that sin, so that (if we let him) we can be changed into the

people that we like to think (and would like others to think) that we

really are.

May that be the source of your joy this Christmas.

David Andrew

Has Time run out for the Church Clock? As you visit or pass by the church in White Waltham you may have

noticed over the past few months the clock is not always working.

During July a principle part of the internal workings had to be removed to

be repaired at the workshop of Smith’s of Derby Clockmakers. During the

installation of the repaired component the engineer checked the internal

and viewed the external clock parts. It was discovered that the hands of the

south clock face have lost a locking screw which holds the Minute hand in

place preventing it from getting caught by the Hour hand in its progress of

marking the time. He was able to get the clock going at that stage but alas

the same problem has occurred again so the clock is no longer working

properly. The south face is now completely out of operation, we are hoping

to keep the other two faces going.

We have obtained a quote to fully restore, overhaul and repair all the clock

components and faces. It will be necessary to erect scaffolding to complete

this work so the overall cost could be up to Seven Thousand Pounds.

Because of other more pressing financial constraints this is not likely to

happen in the near future.

THANK YOU

Such a short word but the very word Thank you means so much and takes so little time to say, so why don’t we say it more often?

With Christmas coming and presents being given and received that wonderful word means so much. What a shame that grandchildren zap off an email or pick up the telephone (If you are lucky) and the thank you letter is a thing of the past.

As a child we had to write our thank you letters on Boxing Day or else! Chewing the end of the pen and writing very carefully, the words “Thank you for my present, it is something l have always wanted! “

Should you not be the recipient of a Thank you letter from a young person, next birthday send them an unsigned cheque or one glove or sock saying “ The other one is in the post when l receive a thank you letter”! Try it!

Cate Goffe

P.S. Remember your own Thank yous!!

LETTER FROM NEW ZEALAND

Family Time

Oh yes, Christmas is edging closer and for many, that is a very special time

when families try to get together. But for Liz and me, family time came much

earlier.

At the end of September Liz celebrated her 50th birthday and she has had

some extra special friends and family to help in the celebrations. First a friend

she hadn’t seen for very many years, someone who had been her special

friend in both primary and high schools, flew out from England. She stayed

with us for four weeks and we all had a wonderful time. We did heaps of

things together and for Liz and me it was like a holiday as we shared

experiences together, often doing things and visiting places we had not done

before.

This friend had scarcely made it back to UK when Liz’s sister and her two

youngest boys (teenagers) arrived for a fortnight’s stay. The sisters had not

seen each other for over twelve years and the boys really didn’t know us at

all as they had been tinies when we left England. Mind you, they pretty soon

set about putting that right as we again visited some of our special places.

But because all of Liz’s family are in UK, for the actual celebration, we had

booked a local railway station restaurant with its private function room, and

invited our local “family”. These consisted of all our friends at church, other

neighbours and friends from nearby. But we were especially blessed when

my two daughters each with a daughter, travelled to Dunedin from

Wellington. We had a great time. It was a lovely meal and it was sad that it

had to end.

Mind you, not everything went perfectly smoothly. On her second day here,

Liz’s sister had a fall in our lounge and cracked a bone in her elbow. That did

make her stay here a little more difficult but everybody coped very well and

the local hospital sent her home complete with X-rays and notes so that her

healing could be made as easy as possible back home.

I do hope that your Christmas goes very well and that if you entertain family

that there are no accidents.

But there is a way to ensure that you and your family stay together always

and forever. Families were invented by God, it was He who first drew people

together in families which formed the backbone of communities down the

Page 13: The Vicar’s Letter The Vicarage, Waltham Road, (corner of ...btckstorage.blob.core.windows.net/site1468/Parish...Your local organic/biodynamic farm. Christmas Shop Thursday 20 th

ages. But families get split up is several ways. The big one is when a family

member passes away. That is when God’s wonderful plan takes over. You

see, God may be said to have a family and he invites you and me to become

members of His family not just for time but for eternity.

There’s an old gospel song that asks. “Will the circle be unbroken by and by?”

Well, will it? The answer is in your hands, all you need to do is accept God’s

invitation to join His family and when you do, you’ll have the very best

Christmas ever. I pray you do.

Tales from the Bells

Since the last magazine we have said goodbye to Roger and Aldene Martin. Roger and Aldene were lovely people and a pleasure to ring with. They both gave up a lot of their time to help with the tower. So to thank them both we had a little send off in the Bell Tower on their last Sunday morning with us by presenting them with a Table Bell. The above mentioned table bell was purchased from Whitechapel Bell Foundry, which is where we went on our ringers outing. On 6th October a group of us enjoyed a long-awaited (we had to book nearly a year ago) tour of Whitechapel Bell Foundry. This is where the bells at White Waltham were cast in 1989, and is one of only two church bell foundries in the UK. The street entrance wouldn’t look out of place in a Dickens film, and within there is an intricate network of rooms and work areas which have gradually filled the site as it has developed over the years. No work was taking place on a Saturday, but we were shown how the different processes of making moulds (horse manure a key ingredient!), casting bells, and tuning are carried out. When they are tuned the precise shapes of the bells are adjusted until several harmonics sound at the required frequencies (which for an English church bell produces a minor chord) – this is a very delicate process as it is easy to shave metal off but impossible to put it back. We were also shown the processes involved in making hand bells, and the sets of gleaming bells with their thick leather handles were highly desirable! The carpentry workshop was located at the top of a rickety staircase, and we saw a set of rope wheels being prepared for a newly cast ring of bells - the foundry is involved in all stages of bell hanging, not just the production of the bells. All together it was an intriguing afternoon and we are now highly appreciative of the skills which have gone into creating the musical bells we ring week by week. (Many thanks to Caroline Andrew for her write-up of the day.)

The band of ringers would like to wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a peaceful New Year. Lesley Graves, Tower Captain, White Waltham.

Collections at White Waltham Church over Christmas

Family Carol Service with Christingles

Part of the collection taken at this year’s Family Carol Service will go to the Children’s Society. This children’s charity helps vulnerable children and young people, including children in care, young runaways, disabled children, young refugees and young carers. At the heart of their work are the charity’s Christian values of love, justice and forgiveness.

The charity runs campaigns to highlight particular issues and is currently working to draw attention to the plight of young people who run away from home or from care. The charity is a leading authority on matters affecting children and carries out specialist research, the evidence from which is used to influence policy and change perceptions. The charity’s ultimate aim is to give young people a better chance in life. Light of the World Carol Service

The whole collection at the Christmas Eve Carol Service will go to Yeldall Manor. Yeldall is a residential rehabilitation centre, based in Hare Hatch, for men with drug and/or alcohol addictions.

Yeldall runs detoxification programmes as well as rehabilitation, helping men to deal with the underlying reasons for their dependency. Their resettlement programme helps men with life and work skills in preparation for the move back into the community, offering training and help in finding both work and housing. Yeldall’s programme of community aftercare support can be accessed for up to a year after leaving the centre.

Yeldall is a Christian centre that welcomes people of any faith, or none at all, to participate in their programmes. The Family Carol Service is on Sunday 23 December at 11am. The Light of the World Carol Service is on Christmas Eve, Monday 24 December, at 6.00 pm.

It has been a busy and exciting term at Woodlands Park. Our Kings and Queens project was very successful and all the children and staff enjoyed a

super visit to Windsor Castle in October. It was lovely to receive so many

positive comments from members of the public and the Castle staff about how well all the children behaved.

We also had a very successful Harvest Lunch where we welcomed parents and

other family members to join us at lunchtime. As usual Mrs Brind and Mrs

Townsend provided everyone with an extremely tasty lunch. We are in the process of writing our own ‘Woodlands Park Favourite’ Recipes book as we

have so many requests from the children for recipes of our most favourite

dishes.

The Year Five and Six children worked very hard on writing and performing

their own version of Macbeth at Norden Farm at the annual ‘As You Like It’ Festival. It gave them a real taste of how the theatre works and what it is like

to perform on a large stage in front of an audience. The children also had a

tour of the theatre including the lighting gallery.

The younger children in the school have begun rehearsing for the Dance Festival which will take place in February and of course everyone has been

busy getting ready for Christmas. The younger children have been rehearsing

their traditional Nativity Plays and the older children are rehearsing carols in

preparation for our Carol Concert.

The environment club has been very productive, clearing out the pond areas, planting red and white onions and garlic. The children have also ensured that

all the birds are well fed at this time of year. To protect the plants growing on

the allotment two wonderful scarecrows have been created. Our wild area now has a ‘Minibeast Hotel’ which, in time, will be home to all manner of

creepy crawlies.

Once again, we are always happy to show around visitors to the school.

Please contact us on 01628 822350 to arrange a visit and meet our wonderful

pupils and staff. Alternatively take a look at our school website www.woodlandsparkschool.co.uk

BE VIGILANT, BE SAFE

A local resident has recently contacted us expressing concern about the

increase in general litter and crime in the predominantly rural parts of

our parish. He was particularly concerned about the increase in fly-

tipping locally and the reluctance of some residents to report anything

suspicious they may see.

If you feel apprehensive about reporting something unusual then be

reassured by the advice available to you from the Thames Valley

Police. You can receive useful advice on crime prevention by signing

up to the community safe email alert. You can do this by going online

at 'thamesvalleyalert.co.uk' or by emailing Jeffrey Pick at

Neighbourhood Plan As you know this is to be our Local Plan for our Ward for the next 10 to 15 years. It is being created by local volunteers in the Ward only with

your input so I am delighted to let you know the eight Consultation Drop In

Events around the Ward were a great success. Many, many thanks to all

those who attended.

All your comments have been sent directly to an independent data officer for

input and you will be able to see the results of your comments in Feb/March.

Then it’s on to a Referendum.

Broadband Berkshire is still running a sign-up campaign to get households and businesses

to register their support for an improved service. In order to ensure that all of

Berkshire has a chance of getting some of the fastest broadband speeds in the country,

We know the problems of not having Broadband in most parts of our rural

ward BUT IF YOU DO NOT REGISTER our area may not be upgraded at

all. The register at present shows West Berks has signed up in their hundreds

whereas our area is showing in single figures. The website address is http://www.superfastberkshire.org.uk/register

Woodlands Park – Royal British Legion Cllr David Evans is continuing to push the Royal British Legion to progress the future plans for the redevelopment of the former legion club in Woodlands

Park. The site is an eyesore and he has asked a representative of RBL to meet

with the Parish Council to discuss their plans.

Double Yellow Lines Parking on the sides of the roads in certain parts of Woodlands Park is

becoming a real highways safety issue.

Following complaints both the Parish Council and your Borough Councillors have asked for double yellow lines around Foliejohn Way roundabout and its

junctions and the junction of Willant Close with the Waltham Rd. A

consultation will go out shortly to you all.

Council News

Preparations for the bad weather The council’s maintenance contractors, Ameys, have more than 800 tons of

Safecoat salt in readiness for a cold winter and will be on 24-hour standby

until the end of March 2013.

The council has also built up stocks of grit bins across the borough, with more than 60 highways yellow bins together with some 80 green community bins

which are managed by residents themselves, parish councils or other local

groups.

Bid for funds for local projects – council call to community groups

and charities The council is re-launching its neighbourhood budget scheme which allows people to vote online for their favourite from a list of local projects that would

benefit from some extra money to help them succeed. This is money for local

projects that will help people and communities in the borough. It is simple, red tape free and open to everyone who is planning or working on something of

value to their street, community or their members.

Groups submit details of their projects that would benefit from a financial

boost of up to £2,000. The projects list is published on the council’s website and then residents vote for their favourites.

The secret of success is for the participating organisations to rally their

members and supporters and encourage them to logon and cast their votes.

Then, every couple of months, the council tots up the numbers and awards the cash to the most popular. There is also the chance to gain up to £2,000 MORE

in match funding if groups can show they have worked to raise money from

other sources.

Called Neighbourhood Budget, it is run by the council as part of the Big Society and this year a total of £32,250 will be given away.

Visit the home page of the Royal Borough website at www.rbwm.gov.uk

and click on Your Local Budget. The closing date for the next round is

5pm on Wednesday 5 December 2012.

We wish you all a Peaceful Christmas and Healthy New Year Cllr Maureen Hunt,

Cllr Carwyn Cox,

Cllr David Evans

White Waltham C E Academy

On the 1st September 2012, White Waltham C of E Academy opened its doors! An exciting next step in our school journey!

Governors, staff, pupils and parents spent term 5 and 6 designing a new logo and school uniform. Some children have started to wear the new uniform and look very smart in navy and grey with our new contemporary logo. We were also extremely fortunate to complete a number of school building improvements this summer; a refurbished kitchen, a new water system in the older part of the school, the year 2 class room got a new sink and storage area, the old girl and boys toilets were converted to a study and store room, our hall was painted and our new Home Economics kitchen was installed. A very busy 6 weeks, but what a lovely result!

As the days shorten and Christmas approaches, the school is a hive of activity with children’s voices ringing out to nativity songs in preparation for our lower school nativities, and our annual Church Service at St. Mary’s at the end of term.

On Friday November 23rd, Year 6 at White Waltham had their 5th Takeover Day, a day when thousands of children across the country step into the shoes of chief executives, MPs and professionals in all walks of life, as part of the Children’s Commissioner for England’s Takeover Day. Takeover Day is a national event offering children and young people across the country the chance to work alongside adults, to gain first hand experience and get involved in decision-making in a wide range of organisations. At White Waltham Year 6 pupils had the opportunity to teach in groups throughout the school, supervise playtime and lead a Collective Worship. We hope this experience gives them an understanding of the various roles.

Many classes have also been benefiting from trips to a variety of places to enrich their learning e.g. a theatre trip to watch a play on ‘The Vile Victorians’, BCA for a Roman Dig, The Globe to learn about William Shakespeare, the Verulamium Museum to experience Roman life, an outing in London learning about Tudor life to name a few.

The year 3, 4 and 6 pupils took part in a writing competition organised by author Michael Libra, following his visit to our school to talk about his books ‘Dragons of Draegonia’. An extract from his letter:

‘May I first thank you for allowing me to present to your children. The school is a credit to both you and your staff and I was extremely impressed with the standard of both behaviour and attention demonstrated by all years. I hope that my small contribution will help to motivate and continue to enthuse your children in developing their reading, writing and creative skills. The fact that out of 207 children your Academy gained 32 awards of Merit, Commendations and Special Commendations attributes to an excellence in teaching.'

Our mathematicians have also been hard at work, and 4 of our year 6 pupils have competed in the first round of a mathematics challenge. What amazing children we have in this school! Whilst we as staff work hard with the children, we know that this is actually a partnership with our parents and we as a school are proud of how we all work together.

Our PTA has also been hard at work, firstly, organizing an amazing quiz where they raised in excess of £ 1000, followed by our Christmas fayre and children’s Christmas shopping events. We are grateful for the many hours contributed by parents to support fundraising, children’s progress and working with us, to move the school forward. Our choir has also been very busy rehearsing for a number of ‘Christmas Events’. They will be performing in a combined Christmas Concert with the Rainbow Project Team of White Waltham St. Marys, hosting a carol service at Christian Smith House as well as performing for the Needlework Guild. Furthermore, our Choir pupils took part in the Maidenhead Festival of Music, Dance & Speech, were they did extremely well.

Our pupils continue to keep fit and have been competing in netball tournaments and football matches. Other children have been enjoying Tag rugby, football and basketball with school and outside coaches.

Our pupils love sharing their school experiences; we welcome visitors and are proud to show them around. Please feel free to arrange a visit to our school. Contact the school office on 01628 822533 or by email [email protected] to arrange a visit or for any further information.
