Via Services, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that has served individuals with disabilities and their families for 72 years, is once again offering a Community Health Summer Nurse Internship at Via West Campus, our nationally-accredited special needs camp in Cupertino. Each year, Via West hosts 3,000+ children, teens, and adults with developmental and physical disabilities during school year respite weekends and longer summer sessions.

Our internship began in 2009 with a grant from The Valley Foundation, and more than 70 student nurses have completed the program. This year, we are opening 10 spots in this highly-competitive internship. Would you be able to share this flyer with your nursing students? CNSA Events

CNSA will be assisting at Washington Hospital Stroke Screening on Saturday, March 11. They will assist in providing stroke education such as diet, sign and symptoms, and pass out magnets. *Prerequisite for this event is experience on a Med Surg stroke unit.

CNSA will be manning the “Disability Awareness Booth” On March 16 from 10AM-2PM @ Spartapalooza Wellness Festival. CNSA members will provide information about disabilities to help students become more aware of their attitudes to other students with disabilities and increase disability awareness. The CNSA booth will include a Q&A plus some small interactive activities. (Semester 1 students who sign up will get 1 extra credit point for Arlene’s class!!!) Location: Diaz Compean Student Union Ballroom

CNSA Sponsoring a Northern CA Event “Breakthrough to Nursing” Saturday, 3/18: Pre-Nursing Conference at SJSU Time: 10AM-2PM Location: Student Union Theatre This organization introduces non-nursing college and high school students to Nursing. The focus is on reaching underserved minorities. We are proud to have the event on our campus this year.

Sunday, 4/30: Volunteer for March for Babies

• CNSA will help with set up, registration, face painting, kids station, snacks, water, and cheering at points along the course.

• Time: 8:00 am - about 12:00 pm • Location: History Park, 1650 Senter Rd., San

Jose. Parking ranges $6 to $10. Distance of walk/run is 3 miles.

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING CLUB

PHNC has their second general meeting this Friday, March 3rd, from 5-6:30 pm in Meeting Room #5 of Student Union. Our guest speaker Vanessa Brewer is a SJSU Nursing Alumna who is working at Stanford and teaches Pediatrics clinical at VMC.

PHNC and Horace Mann Elementary School are joining together to present the Student Health Fair on March 10th from 1-2 pm. We will talk about helmet safety and hand hygiene to a group of student. Follow facebook page for more updates and details.

PHNC volunteers at Second Harvest Food Bank! Join us as we sort food on Wednesday March 15, 6-8

pm, at one of the largest food banks in Santa Clara county! Use our online sign up sheet to secure your spot. Check our facebook page for registration, directions, and more information.

Please Join PHNC as we do our semiannual bake sale on March 20 outside Student Union. This bake sale will raise funds for a charity dedicated to public health and wellness. Come on by and support your Public Health Nursing Club!

grant to open a community group home for

clients transitioning from

Sonoma Developmental

Center. She will be the

Certified Nurse

Administrator for the

home.

KT Helgesen (Class of

2017) will be taking a

position as assistant

professor on the clinical

practice track for the

University of Texas at

Tyler, Fall 2017. KT has received scholarships

from C ACN – nurse educator, a Sant

scholarship, and from Fresno the Presidents

Collaborative Honors Scholarship.

Helen Pagilagan (Class of 2017) is now the

System Manager of Care Management

Education for the

Alameda Health

System and will be

teaching MSN Case

Management

Program at Samuel

Merritt University in

the summer of 2017.

Rebecca Norwick (Class of

2017), Program Director of

the FNP Residency program

at Santa Rosa Community

Health Center, is delighted to

report that SHCRC received received the 1st

ANCC Acccreditation for this residency program.

Robert Allen Vos (Class of

2017) has been named

Director of Nursing for

Centinela Medical Center in

Inglewood, California. He is

also the recipient of a Sant

Education on sexual assault response.

Lisa Hood (Class of 2018) is now a full-time

assistant professor at Fresno Pacific University.

Carolyn Cook (Class of

2018) is now an

adjunct professor at

CSU Stanislaus.

Martha Mays (Class of 2018) has taken a

position as Cardiology Nurse Practitioner at a

community hospital.

Amanda Horrocks (Class of 2017) has been

doing guest lectures at Sierra College and is the

recipient of a Sant Nursing Scholarship.

Lori Arguello (Class of 2017) received both the

Sant Scholarship and the CHHS Presidential

Collaborative Honors Scholarship.

Dr. Evangeline Rico (Class of 2016) has been

promoted to Chief Nurse/Clinical Director for

Ambulatory and Specialty Clinic Services at the

San Francisco VA Hospital. Congratulations

Evangeline!

Dr. Susan Herman (Class

of 2014) has completed

the second part of her

article on

transformational

leadership entitled,

Effects of Nursing Position

on Transformational Leadership Practices. It is

pending publication in the Journal of Nursing

Administration, June 2017

Dr. Herman is now on the AONE education

commission, the nursing leadership

development commission for a CNL, the Hill

ROM Chief Nursing Advisory Council, and the

March of Dimes Executive Leadership team.

Dr. Diane Crayton and Dr.

Janice Sanders (Class of

2014) presented at the

American Psychiatric Nurses

Association National

Conference in Hartford,

Connecticut in late 2016 on

the Addictive Counsel Interactive Panel. They

also presented on Creating Mental Wellness:

Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing at the UC

Davis Pre-– Health Conference.

Dr. Angela Lee Riggins (Class of 2014)

presented a poster at the ACN L leadership

conference in Anaheim in February. The poster

was on Incorporating the Electronic Medical

Record Tools during Simulation May Improve

Nurses Brain Muscle Memory. Dr. Lee Riggins

also gave a podium presentation, "what is

evidence-based practice? What is research?"

At the Interdisciplinary Research Conference,

October 2016 in Fresno, CA. She will be

presenting at two upcoming conferences as

well.

Dr. Christopher Patty (Class

of 2014) is doing a podium

presentation on "Project

Management – Application

for Medication Safety", at the

American Society of

Healthcare Pharmacists,

Minneapolis, Minnesota in June 2017.

Dr. Gail McGlothlin (Class of 2016) has been

asked to participate in the development of

curriculum for training for intraspinal drug

delivery for allied health personnel as

recommended by The Polyanalgesic Consensus

Conference (PACC) neuromodulation group.
