Quitting smoking is notoriously difficult; it takes the average smoker at least fourteen attempts to quit successfully. AppSPIRE, a mobile app for iPhone devices, facilitates effective cessation with rich media, inspired interactive learning activities and a sophisticated tailoring system. As users quit, fail and try again, the program develops a data-rich profile and suggests optimal strategies to promote success with each cessation attempt.

In a space rife with a-theoretical reminder systems and glorified calculators, AppSPIRE stands out. The program utilizes a theory-grounded cessation promotion model (stages of change) that yields a highly tailored and engaging user experience.

In partnership with MD Anderson Cancer Center, SCI created the AppSPIRE program and completed design and development. SCI is currently conducting an evaluation for preliminary program impact among a sample of college students in Houston, Texas.

AppSPIRE is funded by National Institutes of Health (NIDA) via the Federal small business innovation program (R41DA035012).

While social factors have been correlated with health outcomes across a number of domains, few interventions effectively operationalize social support.

Smartphones are uniquely suited to fill this gap. The smartphone is our most intimate computing device; highly personal, always-on, and uniquely social.

QuitBuddy, a new program in development at MD Anderson Cancer Center, seeks to activate the possibilities offered by smartphone technology to support effective tobacco cessation and maintenance.

In this highly collaborative project, SCI co-developed the QuitBuddy concept and delivered application prototypes, and assisted with preliminary feasibility and usability testing of the Android application.

It’s Your Game…Keep It Real (“IYG”) is an HIV/STI and pregnancy prevention intervention for middle school youth that is listed by US DHHS’s Office of Adolescent Health as an effective program.

SCI has provided a variety of services to the University of Texas team throughout the life of the It’s Your Game research program.

We have supported the research team with creative consulting, design, media production, and software development services for over a decade.

We are currently engaged in a small business technology transfer collaboration to further the goal of broadly disseminating It’s Your Game.

“The Secret of the Seven Stones” utilizes narrative and game mechanics to promote communication between parents and children ages 11-14 about sexual health and life decisions. The program is framed with a rich fiction, and features extensive, deep game mechanics to promote user engagement with the material.

STEMPOWERMENT A Social Site for Young Adults

Recovering from Stem Cell Transplant Therapy

Adolescent and young adult (AYA) stem cell transplantation patients face a variety of well-documented physical and emotional challenges. In addition to undergoing a life-threatening procedure that involves an intense treatment regimen and lengthy hospital stay, these patients face a protracted 12-month recovery period marked by numerous physical, emotional and psychosocial challenges (e.g., coping with immunosupression and its socially isolating effects, fatigue, adherence to complex medication regimens, and meeting hydration and nutrition requirements). Failure to meet these challenges not only engenders distress, anxiety and depression, but can also result in serious consequences to health such as organ damage or graft versus host disease.

The Stempowerment project is an internet-based, interactive and personalized social intervention to promote self-management behaviors among AYA stem cell transplant recipients during their extended outpatient recovery period.

The program utilizes extensive social features and game mechanics to enable interpersonal connection and directly address three key behaviors: hydration, medication and exercise.

Stempowerment is funded by National Institutes of Health (NCI) via the Federal small business innovation program (R41CA168107). PIs McLaughlin, Peterson, Askins, Zhang.

Game for Health

Escape with your Life (EWYL) is an interactive, “game for health” that SCI developed under contract to MD Anderson Cancer Center. EWYL frames smoking cessation and prevention as a quest—to escape from a menacing, dark hospital populated by mad scientists, psycho zombies, talking skeletons, and a cast of other crazy characters.

The user advances through the game by collecting and managing items, interacting with other characters, and solving puzzles. The pedagogical context is embedded throughout the experience; the player learns by engaging with people and items throughout the hospital as they complete the quest.

Escape with your Life utilizes track-based tailoring based on the stages of change model.
