THE UNTOLD MELTDOWN

During the last days of the communist Soviet Union, a gentleman bythe name of Lech Walensa, organized the Polish steel workers into apowerful labor union, which had the blessings of the red party inPoland. He named the movement “Solidarity” and I consider thishistoric event to be the beginning of the end for the Soviet empire,also known as the “Iron Curtain” that had violently started in 1917

during the Russian Bolshevik revolution. Soon after, another man bythe name of Mikhail Gorbachev was elected Secretary General of theCommunist Party at the Kremlin, and he was to make profoundchanges in the lives of millions of soviet Russians and their satelliterepublics. In my opinion, this event was the counterbalanced positiveforce in response to the previous two World Wars that devastatedEurope in the first half of the 20th century. What a change it was!Because I still keep fresh images in my mind of a small, low stature,bald headed man whose name was Nikita Khrushchev, pounding hisshoes over the General Assembly’s table in Moscow, in attacks of 

rage against President John F. Kennedy of the United States, when

the Cuba Missile Crisis put face to face the deadly atomic arsenals of the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R.
