Since its inception, the main objective of the university was to bringtogether the different synergies for the same mission: to find waysto defeat cancer.Along its short history the University has established a foundation ,"T. Campanella", with the region of Calabria for the treatment ofcancer.The Foundation has examined the possibility of implementing acenter for proton therapy in the campus with results that havediscouraged such investment.Recently, interest has focused on the use of the BNCT. It is currentlyassessing the possibility of a facility for BNCT in the campus.

The feasibility study takes into account some requirements,shown in the table, relevant to the use of a neutrongenerator in a health facility as the campus "S. Venuta" in Cz.

Recently, the company AccSys / Hitachy proposed a station ofBNCT using a Linac PL-11 for the production of protons of energy10.5 MeV and average current 3 mA. A target of beryllium is usedfor the production of neutrons. The system can also be used forthe production of radio-isotopes.

The system PL-7 built for the ENEA (Frascati) is shown in the photos. The Linac will be used as injector for the project TOP. The system has been shipped already assembled. The sections RFQ and DTL are shown on the right.

Sakurai has shown during the conference on BNCT in 2003the flux of neutrons needed for the BNCT, both thermal andepi-thermal. The table also shows the acceptable levels ofcontamination in the beams.

The figure shows the PL-11 system. It consists of a RFQ sectionfollowed by two DTL sections. The proton beam is sent to thetarget-moderator system. Part of the beam can be optionally usedto produce radioisotopes.
