Reflections from Rev. David Bryce, Senior Minister
And so another year has slipped past. We enter now into our quieter time—but still have worship services.
Please remember that though they will be on a different schedule, we do have a wonderful array of lay-led services
throughout the summer.
Summer Schedule
I will be on vacation for the month of July and have arranged for other UU ministers to provide emergency pastoral care coverage for that time.
This list (summer pastoral care coverage) is being provided to the Parish Board, to members of the
Worship Committee (one of whom will be at each of the summer Sunday services) and to Janice Zazinski. You may contact any of them for the names.
During the month of August I will not have office hours (officially I am on Study Leave) but I will be on call for pastoral care concerns and for meetings if committees or other groups need my presence.
August is my preparatory time when I plan out my work for the year — e.g., sermon topics, including hymn and reading selections. I also do more reading than usual, reading which may or may not find its way into sermons. And I take time for contemplation, for reflection and for being present to the natural world in ways that fill my spirit. The best way to contact me in August (as, indeed, at any time) is by email. And the best email to use to reach me is [email protected]
My regular office hours will resume right after Labor Day. I hope you all — each and every one of you — have the summer you dream of. ~ David
Memorial Service for Rev. Dr. Victor Carpenter, Saturday, June 9, 2 p.m.
The memorial service for Rev. Dr. Victor Carpenter, Senior Minister Emeritus, will take place this coming Saturday, June 9, at 2 p.m. in the First Church Sanctuary.
We are asking for volunteers to bring baked goods for the reception in our Parish Hall after the Memorial Service. Suggestions: cookies, brownies, pound cake, bars, mini-muffins, etc. Anything that can be eaten by hand would be great. Please leave in the kitchen, labeled “for Carpenter Reception” and note if either Gluten or Nut free. If you have any questions, please contact Laurie Graham of the Caring Connection at [email protected] or 617-413-9622.
People may leave remembrances at brownandhickey.com/notices/Victor-CarpenterJr
On Saturday, we ask that the parking lot be used by those with mobility issues and that others park on Concord Avenue, in the municipal lot on Claflin Street, or at the First Armenian Church, 380 Concord Avenue, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 130 Common St. (enter parking lot on School Street). Thank you.
Among Us
Our deepest sympathies to Mike Flamang, Gladys Unger, and family on the death of Mike’s mother on June 1, at age 102.
SAVE THE DATE: Thank You, Jim Staton
On September 23, 2018 First Church will host a luncheon after the 11:00 service to thank Jim Staton for his immeasurable contributions to First Church as Membership Coordinator. Jim has been a member for over 40 years and he and Caroline will be deeply missed. We want to say thank you and well done! Please mark your calendar and join us for this wonderful celebration.
All-Church Potluck Picnic, Sunday, June 10th
Mark your calendar and plan to attend the annual All-Church Picnic immediately following the 11:00 service this Sunday. There will be delicious food, including burgers, chicken, hot dogs and vegetarian options, lots of yummy salads and, of course, dessert. The cost is $5.00 per person or $20 for families of four or more.
Salad Contest
Don’t miss the annual First Church Potluck Salad Contest! Bring your favorite salad to share at the picnic - green salads, pasta salads, fruit salads, all types are welcome. Please bring your salad to the kitchen the day of the picnic and enter your name on the list to be part of the contest. Then at the picnic everyone will vote for their favorite. We serve almost 200 people at the picnic, so the more salads, the better!

You can sign up online to volunteer for the picnic at tinyurl.com/fcbpicnic. If you have any questions, please e-mail or call Melissa Irion at [email protected] or 617-571-9391.
