CSFS Volunteers wrapped up 2013 with holiday tree merriment. Thank you for another great year-- in 2013, CSFS Volunteers committed more than 1,850 hours of service, at a value of nearly 40 thousand dollars. We look forward to a very productive year in 2014 as we look to tackle some long-term projects, including Russian olive removal and other improvements at the CSFS Nursery. Invasive Tree Removal at Lions Open Space Volunteers joined forces with Larimer County Parks staff on Oct. 26 to remove invasive Buckthorn trees along the Lions Open Space. The trees were cut and chipped on a sunny autumn day along the Poudre River corridor. A hot lunch was enjoyed courtesy of the Colorado society of the Daughters of the Revolution and the Lions Club, who also assisted in the mitigation work. Holiday Tree Cuttings and Deliveries Holiday events started in Nov. 23 with a tree harvesting at the Pingree Park Campus. Boy Scouts and their families worked alongside CSFS volunteers and CSU Society of American Forester Alpha Chapter members to harvest 300 lodgepole pine trees. The trees were distributed to families in need through the Gift of Green Christmas program out of the Northern Colorado Shares Charity. The event also contributed to forest management efforts by thinning dense regrowth and improving the health of the forest that was burned in the 1994 Hourglass Fire. Colorado State Forest Service Volunteer Newsletter Winter 2014 The Twig The Twig On Dec. 7 and 8 the annual Holiday Tree Cutting and Sales was hosted by the CSFS Golden District which was the last event CSFS volunteers contributed to in 2013. The event was held at the Genesee Park recreational area, part of the Denver Mountain Parks. On two separate days volunteers traveled to the area east of Denver to help monitor and assist families with permits locate and harvest that perfect Christmas tree. The single digit temperatures didn’t dampen the spirits of the volunteers and staff who warmed themselves by a fire, ate a hot lunch, and cut their own tree to bring home. On the same weekend volunteers in Fort Collins helped deliver trees for the Gift of a Green Christmas program. The trees went to families in need, some of whom had been impacted by the 2013 flooding. Recipients got a tree with all the trimmings. It was also a great opportunity to educate them about the role that CSFS plays in forest management and how the harvest of their Christmas tree helped to improve the overall forest health. National Western Stock Show CSFS volunteers worked alongside outreach and tree seedling nursery staff to educate visitors at the National Western Stock Show on Jan. 25 and 26. Outreach activities included providing information on the current Emerald ash borer infestation which was discovered in Boulder last September, fire mitigation, nursery and other timely topics were brought to the annual event, which brings close to a million people to the Denver complex each year. Workday at the CSFS Nursery Removal of Russian Olive trees on the nursery grounds was started on Feb. 11 by volunteers working alongside CSFS district foresters and tree seedling nursery staff. The trees were cut and chipped on a beautiful winter weekday. Volunteers enjoyed a hot lunch with the staff. Their efforts to help remove the many invasive trees were greatly appreciated. The work was continued on a sunny spring-like day March 9.

A little Russian olive education:

Did you know that natural resource managers once planted Russian olive (Elaeagnus angus foilia) purposely in wind‐breaks and riparian areas? We have since discovered that this tree actually grows too well, as it outcompetes na ve vegeta on, such as various willows. Russian olive is now

labeled as a noxious weed in Colorado.   You can learn more at: h p://www.colorado.gov/cs/Satellite?blobcol=urldata&blobheader=applica on/pdf&blobkey=id&blobtable=MungoBlobs&blobwhere=1191397772565&ssbinary=true.
