DECLARACIÓN DE MISIÓN DE OLQP La parroquia de la iglesia católica Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz se dedica a dar testimonio de las enseñanzas de Jesucristo, especialmente el Evan-gelio de San Mateo, Capítulo 25:21-46. Nuestra misión es nutrir el espíritu y alentar el potencial de aquellos a quienes servimos a través de la cele-bración litúrgica, labores educativas y ministerios sociales. La parroquia continuará identificándose con su origen como una comunidad afro-americana, pero reflejando una congregación multi-étnica y continuará promoviendo la armonía racial y la justi-cia social. Si bien es cierto que nuestro enfoque principal es la vecindad comunitaria, contin-uaremos trabajando para proveer por el bienestar de los más necesitados en general. OLQP MISSION STATEMENT

Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church is dedi-cated to witnessing the teachings of Jesus Christ, especially the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 25:31-46. Our mission is to nurture the spirit and to encourage the potential of those we serve through liturgical celebration, educational endeavors and social ministries. The parish will continue to identi-fy with its origin as a Black parish. As a multi-ethnic congregation we will seek to promote racial harmo-ny and social justice. While our primary focus is within the immediate community, we will also work to provide for the well-being of the down-trodden everywhere. In this we strive for our parish community to be a caring, sharing, and loving fami-

Rev. Thomas P. Tunney, C.S.Sp.,

Enters Eternal Life

Fr. Thomas P. Tunney, C.S.Sp. of Bethel Park, a member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, died peacefully October 14, 2020 at

Manor Care in Whitehall, PA. He was 85 years old.

Fr. Tunney was born December 12, 1934 in Ambridge, PA. He professed his vows as a member of the Congregation of the Holy

Spirit on August 22, 1955 at Holy Ghost Novitiate in Ridgefield, CT and was ordained to the Priesthood September 21, 1960 at St.

Mary’s Seminary, Ferndale in Norwalk, CT.

Fr. Tunney was first appointed to East Africa in the District of Kilimanjaro in 1961 and ministered there and in succeeding years in

the Catholic Missions of Liliondo, Simanjiro and Monduli Juu and the Diocesan Junior Seminary in Arusha. During his time in Africa

he also served as Superior of the East African Foundation (which later became the East African Province) and Rector of the Usa Riv-

er Seminary. In the early 1980s while back in the United States, he worked as the Director of Mission Affairs at the Provincialate. In

1990, he was asked to be rector of the Theology House in Nairobi, Kenya.

Upon returning to the States in 1996, after a brief sabbatical, he became director of the Spiritan Foundation in Wheaton, Mary-

land. In 1999, he was appointed pastor of St. Mark the Evangelist in Harlem, NY where he served for 10 years. He was then as-

signed as parochial vicar to Our Lady Queen of Peace in Arlington, VA. He was much loved by his parishioners at both parishes. He

obtained retirement status in 2015 and was in residence at OLQP until 2018 when he joined the retirement community at Liber-

mann Hall in Bethel Park.

Fr. Tunney was preceded in death by his parents William and Marcella O’Donnell Tunney and his brothers John and William Tun-

ney, Jr. and sister Mary Betz. He is survived many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Due to COVID restrictions, funeral arrangements will be limited to immediate family. For those not able to attend, the Funeral

Mass will be live-streamed on the U.S. Spiritans Facebook page on Thursday, October 22 at 10:30am. Burial will take place in the

family plot at Sewickley Cemetery in Sewickley, PA.

In memory of Fr. Tunney donations may be made to the Congregation of the Holy Spirit designated for retirement or for the educa-

tions of future Holy Spirit Fathers and Brothers, 6230 Brush Run Road, Bethel Park, PA 15102.

The family of Fr. Tunney asks that condolences be sent to his nephew at the following address:

NEWS FROM MEDOR: St. Joseph of Medor parishioners join the people of OLQP

in congratulating the United Nations World Food Program

(WFP) on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In the last

year the WFP provided assistance to nearly 100 million

people in 88 countries, combatting hunger and improving

conditions for peace. We are grateful to the WFP for

providing food for the school lunches in the four primary

schools in St. Joseph parish and to OLQP parish for spon-

soring the lunch program in the parish’s secondary school.

Haitian proverb: “Sak vid pa kanpe" (An empty sack can't

stand up.). Thank you to the WFP and to OLQP for helping

the children in St. Joseph parish stand tall.

New Temporary Location for the PARISH OFFICE BUILDING:

1915 Edgewood St. S., next to the Rectory As parish renovations continue, the parish office building is next in line. The building is expected to be closed through January. Office hours at our new location remain the same: Mon-Fri, 8:30am-3:30pm. Please continue to use the parish mailing address: 2700 19th St S, Arlington VA 22204 1915 Edgewood St S is a split-level house with short sets of interior stairs between each level. If stairs are not an issue, please park in the church parking lot and use the gated en-trance next to the rectory that leads down to the back patio where you’ll find a double door entrance. The front en-trance off Edgewood St. has less steps and is the most direct route to the new office location. We regret this temporary location is not accessible to all. Please contact the office should you need to make arrangements to meet in accessi-ble space. We are happy to accommodate you. We expect to be at this location through the first of the new year.

Parish Phone system -- We are using VOIP (voice-over-IP) at the new office rather than rewire the entire house for a traditional phone system. THANKSGIVING FOOD BASKET

“ADOPT A FAMILY”

Your generous Thanksgiving donation last year helped to provide 548 families with a holiday meal. Given COVID-19, we expect to

serve at least that many this year.

We are seeking donations as follows:

In anticipation of having to order large quantities of various items and wanting to avoid multiple shopping trips, we are starting

this effort far earlier than usual. If you are able and interested to donate, please email OLQPThanksgiving2020@gmail.com and

donations are welcome and much appreciated.

In the interest of food safety in a COVID-19 world, please donate store bought & packaged pies only. We hope to return to the

annual pie baking event next year. Also, because we must reserve refrigerator and freezer space for turkeys, no frozen or refriger-

ated pies. Turkeys take up every inch of space we have campus-wide!

We are determined to provide Thanksgiving in a safe, socially distanced manner. To that end, we will have teams outside Father

Ray Hall on the Saturday and Sunday before Thanksgiving, November 21st & 22nd running Operation Drive-by Turkey so you just

drive up and a volunteer can get the items out of your car. More details to follow.

Similarly, COVID-19 prevents us from having the long-standing OLQP tradition of parishioners coming together to organize,

sort, pack and distribute Thanksgiving. However, we still need volunteer help; some of which can be done from home. Here

is a sample of volunteer jobs we need help with:

Bulk ordering from various stores once we know what we need to purchase (more than 1 volunteer)

Bulk order pickups (likely many volunteers)

Drivers to deliver meals (drop at doorstep with text upon arrival; about 5 volunteers)

Donut/snack delivery for volunteers working Saturday, Sunday & Monday

This year, because many are in need, we will have a parish only registration for food baskets on Sunday, October 25. 2020 from

10am until 1pm in the lobby of the Ministry Center.

If you are unable to shop and would prefer to make a donation to our Thanksgiving Adopt-a-Family program, you can do so safely

online here. Our estimated cost for the entire meal including turkey is $50.

Estamos determinados a proveer para el Día de acción de gracias de una manera segura y con distanciamiento social. Con eso en

mente, tendremos equipos de personas afuera de Father Ray Hall el sábado 21 y el domingo 22 de noviembre, antes del Día de

acción de gracias. Esas personas estarán a cargo de “Operation Drive-by Turkey” para que conduzca su auto y una voluntaria o

voluntario recoja lo que tiene en el auto. Daremos más detalles en el futuro.

De la misma manera, COVID-19 nos prohíbe que tengamos la antigua tradición de reunir a miembros de la parroquia para organizar, ordenar, empacar y distribuir las donaciones. Sin embargo, esto no significa que no necesitamos sus esfuerzos voluntarios, y algunos se pueden hacer desde la casa. Aquí tienen ejemplos de cosas con las que necesitamos ayuda:

Living the Gospel of Life Through Gun Violence Prevention

Each October, the Catholic Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life Month. This year’s theme is “Live the

Gospel of Life.” As Catholics, we are called upon to cherish, defend, and protect all life. At Our Lady Queen of Peace

parish, we have many ministries that address different aspects of our calling to respect life. One of them is our Gun

Violence Prevention Ministry.

Gun violence prevention is a pro-life issue because it is about the defense and sanctity of human life. As followers of

Jesus, we believe his Gospel message that all life is holy because God is the giver of all life.

Our deep revulsion to crimes of gun violence is one way that God encourages us to act to prevent them. Praying for an

end to crimes of gun violence is a first step, but not sufficient in a community like ours that believes the Gospel mes-

sage that God gave us the intelligence to bring about lasting moral change. We need to avoid what the old catechism

called “sins of omission”--things we should have done but failed to do.

Among the things we can do to prevent crimes of gun violence is to consider each candidate’s record on gun violence

prevention when deciding which candidates to vote for in November’s election. We can also let the candidates know

that this matters to us. Polling showed that curbing gun violence was the single most important issue on Virginia vot-

ers’ minds last fall. We have it in our reach to elect candidates with the most responsible and pro-life positions on gun

violence prevention.
